I thought this video might be a âdownerâ but it is not. Your information is right and Iâm with you on all of these.
I agree with most of these, but find that in general pasta sauce needs a bit of sugar. I actually was bewildered when I first tried Raos because it was all acid and couldn't figure out why everyone raved about it. Depending on how sweet the tomato products you use are, a bit of sugar balances the acidity of the sauce. Of course I prefer to control this on my own vs buying store bought sauces, but zero sugar in a red sauce tastes bad to me in most cases
I've started using sweet paprika as a balancing ingredient instead of sugar. You can stir it right at the end of the cooking too, adjusting the quantity as you like. And it's red đđđŹđ§
That jam you pointed out that you buy is so much more expensive but OMG SO WORTH IT! And it lasts long 'cos you don't need a lot per sandwich or toast.
Good job I agree with you one hundred percent on all the foods you mentioned and Iâm behind you all the way I stoped buying those too
On the cucumber front, we changed to cocktail cukes. Makes it quick to use only whatâs needed.
Apples: Braeburn and Gala and Pink lady are all full of flavour and juiciness, I know because I'm a Horticulturist b6 trade and the first 2 are very old varieties which I know very well and only buy them unless other old types are being sold, good luck but please try these varieties, they are the best, better than Golden delicious etc đ đđ·, Oh yes, MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL
Homemade pasta sauce is generally how I go. I rarely buy the jarred stuff, and when I do itâs mostly the convenience factor
Save money on the $8 jar of Rao's and pay for better eco friendly tuna. Unbelievable that tuna is so dirt cheap in the US.
Cranberry sauce is so easy in the Instant Pot. I made mine that way this year and I'll never buy canned again.
Thank you for this and spreading the word. I stopped buying these things YEARS ago. So easy to make salad dressing and much cheaper. I love Dave's Killer bread when I need a fill in for my homemade bread- I make 3 loaves at a time and freeze the rest. I NEVER buy pre-cut fruit for yhe exact reason you stated. I cut everything myself for my platters- and in season fruit. Thank you for the terrific video!!
Does Redman have iodine? I just worry about thyroid health without it
I love pickling cucumbers! I peel in strips and they turn out so good!
We make our own tomato sauce for Italian nights, so easy! Tomato puree, diced tomatoes, garlic onion and herbs. Delish!
Some very smart and healthy tips. Thank you for sharing.â€
I have also either substituted the itmes you listed or I never bought it in the first place....the one item I've thought about are the long slender cucumbers.... Next time I'll try those...thanks for the video
I soooo agree with you on many of these. I wish I had never given in to my kids and husband! I still buy some of these because, well, kids and husband LOL. I try to avoid canola oil, sugar, corn syrup, HFCS/G-F. I was so disappointed to see Campbell's tomato soup has glucose-fructose (HFCS). It's terrible for us, it's really damaging our livers. And it's in everything.
Great video, l completely agree with you about this list. Thank you!!
Thanks LiLi. Great video!
I totally get that with the bread. In the US they put super weird stuff in there, if you have ever been to europe and walk through the bread isle just the smell of the the bread there is totally different , american bread isles make me feel nauseous .
Great video! I just found your channel and am excited about trying so many recipes. One note from a geeky scientist⊠be careful to watch your diet for sufficient iodine intake if you arenât using iodized salt, especially if you are pregnant, vegetarian or vegan. They started adding iodine to table salt in the 1920s because so many people were iodine deficient. Most people do not realize how important iodine is to many aspects of their health.
My thyroid started malfunctioning and I was diagnosed with mild hashimoto's disease (low thyroid). I started doing research and realized that a couple/few years before I switched to sea salt as a healthier option to iodized salt - which sounds great until I realized I wasn't getting iodine anywhere else in my diet. I have since switched back to iodized salt and now have healthy numbers in my thyroid panel again. :)
@@beths8998 Why not just add seaweed to your dishes or just eat some seaweed. Most seafoods also have iodine, esp. shrimp. Eggs are another good source.
@@2bczar4u thank you for the idea. I did not consider that. I just knew that the iodized salt contained it and was readily available/cheap.
Thanks so much for sharing! It'll am more careful as I'm hearing 70 about what goes in to my body. I try to only eat non GMO foods.
try shopping at Trader Joes, they don't carry GMO products.
Thank you. This was very helpful
I made a double batch of your Instant Pot cranberry sauce......it was gone in four days! Also, another reason for making your on anything, besides the sugar, is that so many items contain more salt than we should have.
I agree with you 100%!! Thank you for this video.â€
These are all good ideas. Yes, the ice cream/Hersheys is a thing. Haha. I would try the English cucumbers if they caused less burping. Regular cucumbers make me burp. Thanks.
"this salt actually has minerals, it's very healthy for you" is a myth.
If one prefers one type of salt because of texture or taste ok but to say that they are more healthy is untrue, generally the amount of other minerals in salt are so little that they are nutritionally negligeable. Idk about this salt specifically but stuff like Himalayan salt are a marketing scam.
Get a Freeze Dryer and you can make your own fruit snacks. I don't buy spaghetti sauce. I make my own which is tons better than store bought.
The only thing i look for in the ads is bananas. I buy a 40 lb box at a decent price and slice into quart freezer bags, then put those into a gallon freezer bag. A ready dessert or addition to hot Oatmeal. You can mix with fresh frozen apples from your tree and fresh frozen peaches or plums...all from your own trees. We top with a bit of whipped cream or warmed organic nut butter that freezes on impact! You can eat thatnor use as a topping for whole homemade pancakes. Toss in a little tapioca flour to make pancakes a little chewy. That fruit combo alone is especially good in summer. You can blenderized them for a smoothie or just banana for soft ice cream. Thank you for helping so many!
Bananas- lot of carbs & sugarđ
Totally agree with you. I love tuna but the store brands are gross. I spend the money to get local canned tuna which is very clean and environmentally good. Although I do like the tuna from Costco. Dave's bread is my go to bread, thin sliced. Even my doctor said that if I need to eat bread that is a good brand. Lots of good stuff in it.
Apples are often just dipped in salt water for a few minutes. That's what prevents browning. It is supposed to rinse the apples off afterward. If the preparation is lazy, they simply dip them and package them. There isn't any chemical people are using to prevent apples from browning. It's just salt water or a light poaching- a practice used for centuries.
The Costco Strawberry Jam is ridiculous! So good and only 4 ingredients, to me it tastes like a homemade freezer jam.
I would like to see you go into items that you donât buy in the refrigerated sectionđ
Wow we r same sameâŠ.I never buy those and not even processed foodâŠ.
But cab tuna my favâŠI make kabab or makes yammy with riceâŠ.I buy with waterâŠ.now expensiveâŠ..
Iâve stopped buying 3/4 of my groceries bc of inflation and a disability income đđ
I do love your shows though. I wonât cut those out
No Frankenstein ingredients. No High Fructose Corn Sweeteners for instance.
What did one pickle say to the other? Dill with it.
Instead of buying bread, I make waffles. I also have the Presto Stuffler. Many of the reasons I hate white bread. 1. It sticks to the roof of my mouth. 2. No nutritional value. You can actually take a rolling pin and and squash it. Itâs full of air. Here on CZcams I found oatmeal waffle recipes.
Oatmeal Waffles
INGREDIENTS:
3 cups rolled Oatmeal
1 ripe banana or any fruit you want
+ 2 1/2 cups of water
i use real salt also...cuz i make ferments
I use Saltines instead of bread . They have a lot less ingredients and no sugar !
Oh I agree. I only buy & for year's now is Newman's Own dressings and other products are good. & still consistent even though Mr.Newman has been gone for many years now. & it supports charities he believed in .
I love your cabinets color
I heard if you mix tuna with vinegar or lemon juice, it helps with the smell
I can't stand the smell of canned tuna but my husband and I both love to eat it. I buy the tuna packed in water.
I make my own ketchup, soups, butter, spaghetti sauce, Alfredo sauce, burritos, I buy the basic foods and make my own I try to not buy prepared foods, too many chemicals and sugar, GMO. I make my own jelly too.
Good job
Any quick and easy chicken bone broth in the instantpot videos coming up?
Thanks. Make your own whole wheat bread and use a little molasses....you will NEVER buy bread again. I used a bosch bread maker. I could never get it right before that. But then i discovered i have celiac. I sure miss that great bread. Also getting pre cut foods is a big risk of food poisoning and illness that is currently in your community. Using an instapot pressure cooker kills all the germs. It lasts longer for great left overs and saves vitamins. Salt is a killer for me. When you stop using salted and sugared foods, you do get used to it. Food yeast helps with salty flavoring. Then when you eat processed foods, you do not even like it. If you must, dilute with whole foods to perk the flavor and cut the salt and sugar. I add almond and tapioca flour to packaged gluten free brownies. You are definitely on the right track!
I found this video interesting, most of the stuff you don't buy anymore I never bought as I'm vegan and make a lot of things from scratch. It's always best to buy wholesome whole fruits and vegetables and not those precut things. We live in a society of quick n fast n that's what the sellers feed off of that. So good for you for improving your buying habits leading to healthier living.
I only buy Victoria, tomato sauces, rather marinaras. I donât like the other commercial tomato sauces/marinaras because youâre too sweet, Victoria does not add any additional sugar. Of course, I could always make tomato sauce, but I find that Iâm just a little bit too lazy.đ
Good reasons not to buy!! We are doing the same!
Freezer jam?
FCS...is in everything....it s a cheap sweetner...and addictive....took me forever to give up cokes....drinking more water..unsweetened tea...unsweetened gatoraid...
I would research oils. Canola oil is heated which is not good for your body. Cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, coconut and avocado oil is so much better for your body. â€
Coconut oil is not particularly healthy to consume. Itâs mostly saturated fat which isnât heart-healthy. Canola oil is actually a much healthier choice, according to dietitians, and a great oil for cooking due to its high smoke point. Look for cold-pressed canola oil, which is a good source of Vitamin E. Other healthier choices are olive, avocado, and peanut oils.
Coconut oil is not saturated fat - comes from a plant not animal fat - misleads people bcs it solidifies at room temperature & people equate that with solid animal fatđ
I used to buy packaged cake & brownie mixes - prices have risen so much for these convenience foods that if u pre make big batches of these mixes yourself ( check CZcams) you can save a lot of money because you have to add milk & eggs to these mixes from yr pantryđ- you are basically paying outrageous prices for mostly sugar & flour !
Tomato and spaghetti sauces need some sugar for flavor. Garlic and onion elevates the sauce. I guess everyone seasons to their taste.
I make a delicious chicken soup with chicken wings đ€€.
Cheap salt is good to pour down your drains at night because it tends to prevent clogs and kill drain flies; and if you are poor like me, to flavor your pasta water. Just my two bits.
Wait a minute if you were buying tuna that was $.69 a can I think I can guess why you donât like tuna. That is the cheapest most dead dreadful tuna you can buy and yeah itâs going to taste like something that died a week ago. As the old adage says you get what you pay for.
When I grocery shopping I like to look for something different to try and eat just be positive and do something new. Most of the time it's good. Not anchovies yuck .
I honestly do not understand why you are so against corn syrup. Please could you explain this for me. Thank you.
OK either the coffee aisle or the produce section of the grocery store. Because your assumptions everything in produce aisle is healthy? Coffee âïž there's so much stuff.
Unfortunately, scammers are now flooding the comment sections of people like you who work hard to get good information to us. I appreciate your videos so much. They are well-produced, timed well, and packed with great ideas. I hope that others, seeing âinvestmentâ opportunities do not respond to them. If we ignore them, they may not go away, but at least we wonât contribute to their schemes. Lisa, keep on bringing us those great videos. I always get good advice. I have an index card on the inside of my kitchen cabinet. This serves as a cheat sheet for the things I make most from your videos such as hard-boiled eggs, rice, and chicken dishes.
I only make my own tomato sauce.
I don't buy kids cereal anymore
prego traditional tastes werid anyone noticed it plz tell me why
Lol who buys Wonderbread
Instead of using Sugar, why not use Honey ?, I'm Diabetic type 2Diabetes, but I'm learning that Sugar is bad news, so is there a way you can cook without using Sugar and make recipes safer for all of us without fears of putting weight o n or becoming Diabetic which can happen at any age, not just when elderly!?
So summary of your video, dont buy the standard American products which are full of stuff thats either banned or just not used in the uk & Europe because we just wouldn't touch the stuff. It amazes me how much chemicals & corn syrup is in nearly all American foods. Did you know that in Ireland the courts rulled that Subway "bread" isn't bread due to the massive amount of suger that's in it? Obvs white bread is far from healthy but ours doesn't contain the sugar and chemicals that American white bread contains. Also I've NEVER seen your "standard" cucumbers in the uk or mainland Europe "English" cucumbers are our standard and are just called cucumbers. I appreciate that it's REALLY difficult to find corn syrup & chemical free foods in the US & due to your FDAs approach of only banning things proven harmful after its potentially affected thousands, the majority of foods are questionable when seen from a European perspective. So your efforts to protect yourself and your family as well as educate others is admirable.
The salt you are using may taste better, but it is still mostly sodium, and thatâs not good for you. So donât mislead people by telling them itâs healthy. Itâs not! I agree with you on most other items, especially cranberry sauce. Itâs very little trouble to make your own: Cranberries, water, sugar, boil for 10 -15 minutes, done. You can get cranberries frozen now, so you donât even have to wash and pick them over.
You should get whole grain not whole wheat. Whole grain is so much better for you.
It might just be a Walmart thing
Gaaack. No wonder you don't like tuna. Buy troll caught albacore from the U.S. Not light or anything else. Most canned tuna in the store has been cold stored for 2-5 years, cooked whole wroth the guts in, bleached with peroxide to get the gray color out of the meat then canned in vegetable broth to add back flavor.
Don't buy Tuna, even in water. Tuna is a big fish and has more heavy metals & PCB in it. Buy Pink Salmon. It is a smaller fish with lot less metals and PCB's
I have read that Yellowfin is a better option in the tuna category
"cleaner" đ I really hate that term; it's very pejorative and virtue-signal-y to me. I know you don't intend to be judgmental, but... that word isn't the most useful. it's more of a marketing term. I'm sorry; I do like your videos, but this term hits me wrong.
re: prepared foods -- I don't buy many of them because I have time to make my own, but I know many people don't have time to make homemade chocolate syrup (which is fast and easy, but still requires time and clean-up). some people truly need these foods to survive, and I think it's important not to speak about such foods in a judgmental way (which I've for SURE done in the past).
SMUCKERS = Terrible company, they bought a company from the 1800's from the UK Crosse and Blackwell, great old products and then ran it into the ground and cancelled it, so they can make their terrible terrible low rent jam for 4 year olds and their PB&J. Boycott Smuckers! Love your food reviews!
One note about table salt. Per the CDC, 12% of Americans and 20% of people worldwide are iodine deficient and this is the world's leading cause of preventable mental retardation. Americans' and Europeans' iodine consumption is actually falling, maybe because we are eating more processed food which doesn't use it. Table salt is a really easy way to get your needed iodine so most people should be using it. www.cdc.gov/media/pressrel/ad981001.htm
