This was an actual five day course in 1967 called "The Third Wave experiment". However the movie adoption is dramatized, in reality nobody died at the end.

Humans love something higher than themselves for all sort of reasons. They want a higher purpose and source of strength or power amongst others but just like every other movement, it quickly becomes dangerous.
Or belonging to something that is 'greater' than themselves or for the 'greater good' etc. Same with every left wing politics, as they tend towards authoritarianism and collectivism, aka the 'alt right'.

He created the situation that lead to it. You know if you are out with friends and they decide to rob a bank . Even though you had no knowledge of it. You could go to jail for a very long time. Simply for being in the get away car.

also they were his students so he was basically responsible for all their actions during that week, including the vandalism, the assault in the pool and all the other things. because in germany even if you are an adult and you still visit a highschool which isnt that unusual the teacher is legally responsible for everything
