  • In an idyllic utopia whose peace and stability hinge upon control of monogamy, privacy, money, family and history itself, everyone belongs to everyone else. Conditioned from birth at the Hatchery, residents of New London are assigned a letter of the Greek alphabet and relegated to predetermined life roles in accordance with expectations for their bio-engineered caste.

The novel Brave New World is such a fantastic story, I don't understand why they strayed so far from the book and added in all the other storylines to this adaptation. The novel is a classic and an important contribution to literature, it doesn't need all this filler. I think they’re trying to make it so a sort of happy ending is possible with people breaking free from the system, but the problem with that is it negates the whole point of the book. The only reason Bernard and Helmhold in a sense “break free” is because they are representations of the anomalies that will always be present in an assembly line and in this case their manufactured society. Even then it’s them getting sent off into exile as they refuse to be like Mustapha Mond and resign to the world order - in fact Mond himself in the book was also an anomaly as he was very self aware but rose to power by standing by the system instead. As in only the person who does not belong in the system itself can be the one to run it type thing. Further more the reason John met such a tragic demise was because he was used a lab rat in Mond’s experiment to see how the someone from old ways of the world would interact with new world order. Perhaps to see if “rehabilitation” of the savages could be possible over time (my own head cannon in part) but more than that just seemed to be implied as Mond’s cruel curiosity taking over just wanting to see what would happen. The whole point of Brave New World was showing how a perfect society with everyone being happy all the time was both incompatible with freedom and morals and would be inescapable for the people residing in it. You can not be free without accepting that misery may come with that - just as you cannot not be happy all the time without giving up the other stuff that makes us human such as grief, sorrow, creative works to invoke emotions, critical thinking, choice and so on.

Not sure if it was intented but Soma Ras(juice of Soma) is an ancient Indian drink mentioned in the oldest texts Vedas(we don't even now know no which herb/item that was since we lost the knowledge) now the term is humorously used for any alcoholic beverage although historians say it was very specific drink of our ancestors which they used in very specific times and proportion. Soma was like a semi/minor deity to them since it kept them energized
This drink was something which enabled them to stay happy/motivated and full of energy. The Soma medicine in this movie (although obviously shown in a negative sense) practically serves the same purpose function

One thing that movies always get wrong.. LEAVE THE BULLET IN! Clean and cover the wound, pulling the bullet out will probably kill the person or at least cause more damage. We don’t use lead projectiles any more so poisoning won’t happen. A though and through is preferable because it didn’t hit bone so blood poisoning is rare but in combat if you got a bullet in you it’s WAY safer to leave it in and when you are out of combat it can be assessed and most likely left in. Thankfully I’ve never had to deal with that crap but just pulling on out can lead to bleed out, nerve damage, atrophied muscles by damaging the actual muscle fibers or where they connect to the joints or tendons. Use a wet wipe and slap a goss patch on it. Hell, just pissing on it would be safer than pulling the bullet out. I know long useless rant to go on but it’s annoying it’s in so many movies.. it’s like when someone gets stabbed and they pull the knife out... cool, you just put a time limit on your very dangerous situation.. should have left it in because the knife was blocking the bleed out 👌 great job

It's fine to rework a book to be a movie. Things that work in a novel don't always work on film, and vice versa. But it has to be done artfully, with respect for the central ideas of the novel, for what makes it work. Here, they basically made "Brave New World" over into a 1984-like vision. This loses the central conceit of the novel, namely that in the Brave New World people are not enslaved by a ruthless aristocracy, or oppressed by overlords. They are all part of the system, they love their soma. Nobody has to be coerced or forced, because it's how they want to live. Betas enjoy being betas, and epsilons like their work and their play and are happy with their role.

Ironically, the series becomes a mirror for society at large where renowned series of old are hijacked to become cash cows or political vehicles for the existing regime, tarnishing or subverting the once noble or novel work of literature. The opposite case is also true but in more recent cases what I've described seems to be becoming the norm (ex. Star Wars, Witcher, Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, etc).

    • @DanteLovesPizza
      @DanteLovesPizza Před 11 měsíci

That's because the original concept is not "media appropriate." I've not read the book, but from your comment, it's obvious.
Remember, we are sold "freedom" is the best thing ever, despite it only being a limited form of freedom. To introduce into mainstream media that there is another limited form of freedom that is better will only serve to disrupt those currently in power.
Democracy works because it allows imbeciles that don't understand a thing to cluster up and vote for fellow imbeciles into power. You try taking that so-called "power" of voting away, even if it leads them to a better life, and they'll reject it, because it's ingrained in them that their current perception of "freedom" is the best, any further restrictions is not freedom, despite there being restrictions now.
Also, people are now sold big on "equality" even if it leads to worse outcomes. Look around the world, the left-wing ideology of people being equal is growing by the day. If you told people, being led by imbeciles will lead to everyone eating stale bread, but if you are led by competence, the best of the best will enjoy steak dinner, but even the worst will be eating a nice warm beans on toast, the people would rather everyone eat stale bread. Why? Because people have come to eradicate absolute values and take comparative values as being paramount. Watching someone else have better makes them feel worse than having worse with everyone else.
People are nurtured like this to allow those in power to stay in power.

Whenever they use the caste system in literature they subtly imply that the caste system is solely a Hindu or Indian system, whereas the white Spanish conquistadors that colonized my country (the Philippines) from 1500s to 1800s used a racist caste system to abuse the natives. The ranking is as follows:
Elite Pure-blood - the pureblooded Spanish priests, politicians, aristocrats who immigrated from Spain
The Rich Pure-blood and Half-blood Mestizos - Rich Spanish business people and "land owners" who immigrated from Spain, as well as their half-blooded mestizo children that they had with their brown-skinned Filipino spouses.
The Rich Filipinos - pure-blooded Filipinos who married rich Spanish people. However, they still experienced discriminations. They don't have perks that their Spanish spouses have.
The Spanish Workers - Exiled Spanish criminals who were exiled from Spain so they ended up working as the Guardia Civil (aka the police force). In short, the criminals were the law enforcers.
Working Class - The Chinese merchants and Filipino workers/servants/laborers.
Homeless Poor Filipinos - Filipinos whose lands were stolen by the Spanish "landowners". Usually they were victims of forced labor and were forced to work without pay on the exact same land that was stolen from them. They live in makeshift shanties for as long as no Spaniard kick them out.

They had the technological, scientificbmilitary supremacy and organizational efficacy to follow through most of all they were successful in their endeavors, Which is more than I can say for the vast majority of the post colonial states sans a handful like Malaysia and Singapore or the ones that never gave up their freedom like the Japanese(who were intelligent enough to embrace westernization and modernization without devolving into ideological politico economic delusions) .

@@alexanderphilip1809 I never blamed the Britishers, I blamed the East India Company. Many conquerers came and went, but there were only a handful that can compare to their cruelness..
They compared Indians to dogs, beat them up, put loans and debts, humiliated them, falsely executed them, framed them, false punishments, false crime records and much more.
Earliest record I know of their cruelty- They hired people to fake friendships with Indian weavers, give loans and then trap them in a unsigned contract where they have to sell their produce to them at a cheap rate.
If the weavers protested, they would beat them up and torture them in front of the whole village.
This was before they even took over.
Cruelty is cruelty, we won't say just because Kim Jong-un is the dictator, his doings are right.
My whole argument here was that their treatment was unfair, injustice and inhumane. And this my friend, is a fact.
Your logic and ego defies human morals.
There still exists some extent of humanity you should show to your subjects.
But in no way do I hold this against present British population, nor past. (Except of course the ones running the game)
Many Britishers joined Indians in their struggle for freedom and justice. And in a way they were our first allies.

Tourists treat places like India, Italy, etc like zoos just like the city dwellers treated the savages. And the savages didnt have to play along. The city dwellers were non violent so if the savages stopped the city dwellers from leaving the city what would the city dwellers have done. Nothing.

Its in the best interest for the person at top to be good leaders but to make sure the public doesnt get out of control. If the public gets everything they want then you wind up with chaos because everyone cant have 100% what they want because it will interfere with what other people want. Another way of putting it is how much freedom is too much freedom. But then people think the leader is a tyrant because people arent allowed to do trivial things and everything winds up in chaos again. I had to do some digging to figure this one out, as there have been several movie treatments. But like so many TV shows and streaming series based on really good books (or original movies), once again the producers just had to turn it into a meandering soap opera. The two worst things I noticed is that 1) Bernard is the main person that breaks the illusion with the new London society, and 2) Lenina and Bernard don’t go to the savage society until half way through the book, and it’s a rare occasion for people to come, and there’s no cultist that are trying to take down new London.

For example, John's mom got pregnant in the savage lands and was abandoned there and couldn't leave. I believe she blames John for making her stay there. John wanted to be part of a religious ritual the savages take part in but was not allowed bc he is considered an outsider. When he is taken to New London against his will, he rejects everything because he believes this entire society is sinful. The ending is very tragic.
