  • As the first-ever Italian built Jeep to grace our shores, the little Renegade looks to offer Jeep buyers all the charisma and charm of a Wrangler, but wrapped in a tidy, more adorable package.

I have this Jeep. If you're confident enough to drive it then its a great vehicle. My friends were the first to give me crap for it. There is always looks and laughs usually from guys driving decked out wranglers that look like they've never seen dirt or girls driving 4 door unlimiteds. Some people actually tell me to drive a mans vehicle. Whatever thats supposed to mean. If none of that will bother you then get it. This thing can actually wheel. The trailhawk model definitely earns its trail rated badge. I can have fun on the trail and feel great driving to work.

I could care less if someone laughs at me for driving a renegade. It's obviously not my dream car, but I can't afford a mustang Shelby gt350.
I've had jeeps since I was 17. I own a 04 jeep grand cherokee and I love but it's time for something new though.
For him to say that jeep did a shit job on building their old cars, is an idiot. My car is still holding up for its age. It has 98k miles on it.
Honestly, I want a renegade for design and for the off roading. I like the way it looks it doesn't look like most cars.

I bought a 2017 Jeep renegade trailhawk and some of my buddies gave me crap about it. Until we went off-roading and I was able to keep up with their lifted trucks and jeeps. My jeep was the smallest vehicle in our "pack" everyone kept calling it "baby jeep" but after that day they never gave me crap about it again.

Since this video, jeep has updated their transmission software in late 2016 for all 2.4 liter models. When I got the update I was amazed at the difference. I drive a fwd 2.4 liter renegade latitude, which weighs in at 3,056 lbs compared 3,532 lbs of the trailhawk. Noticeably quicker for sure. I test drove the trailhawk and an awd edition first and didn't like the heavier suspension feel, added driveshaft noise, electronic transfer case without a long known history of reliability, nor the upgraded cost of driving on off road tires daily down the interstate and around town. There is something about owning this jeep that no one would understand. If you've ever drove the Grand Cherokee or more so the Wrangler, you know that in order to keep it somewhat stable and smooth, you need to take extra trips for warranty work at the dealership. Then they become essentially money pits after warranty, which is only 36,000 miles on the suspension components, which will fail first. The patriot, compass, and comander series feel loose and have cheap interior. The closest jeep I could compare it too is the latest model Liberty. But still, the renegade is notably better built and well rounded in appearance and abilities. Its very spacious as well, with enough cargo area to get the basics done. They maintained the jeep experience and the plethora of emblems reminds you of that. The transmission will tug up hilly back roads at low rpm and has enough bottom end torque to get that jeep feel across. I think after the Liberty, Cherokee, Patriot, Compass, Jeep has finally made a vehicle that anyone can appreciate. I not only fell in love with the way it looks, but the driving experience is enjoyable as well. Not a single problem thus far, 57,000 miles, and I have a moderately heavy foot. The only thing that I wish they would of made differently for my 2016 is a start/stop feature, with the electronic A/C as I do live near DC where traffic is 15% of your conscious lifespan. I do not know if the late model does, but many of the compasses and cherokees do. Something I was torn on initially when I was looking at those two. But overall I get about 25mpg average. So if your curious, I highly recommend you test drive one. These videos really can't give you a true feel of the vehicle and once you do test drive, you'll understand why they are becoming more and more popular. The newest models add an LED lit trim to the main headlight housing which is something I am looking to upgrade in mine soon. Whether stock, lowered, or off road style, this jeep provides and looks damn good at doing so.

I have a trailhawk and the 2.4 gets up and goes so I don't know WTF he's driving but 185 HP in that little car moves it along very well. Getting out of the hole it's as fast as anyone else in this town so I don't see where it's underpowered? I have owned 3 corvettes and know what speed is but this car is fine with that engine, I keep up and move along with traffic better than the rest. That trans is fine, I have had no problems like he describes and I feel that Jeep did a great job in matching that engine with that trans. BTW I get 24MPG at best with the trailhawk but WTF I didn't buy it as an econmy car

Not only that, but the sleazy car stealerships in my area will get a nicely equipped, low mileage Trailhawk and advertise it at a low price as a BAIT and SWITCH car. When you get to the stealership, they have it hidden and say "it just sold this morning" hoping you will buy something that costs 3 times as much on their car lot. I hate car dealers. I believe most of them are sociopaths.

Now, I feel like the Jeep Renegade Trail-hawk is destined to be my principal vehicle when I become an empty-nester. I always wanted a Jeep but I did not want the poor Jeep reliability. Now I can have a Jeep with true four-wheel drive and off-road worthiness but, with Italian engineering and manufacturing to provide Fiat reliability. Very good review. Thanks.

The automatic shifting algorithm is designed to increase fuel economy. If you want to leverage the engines actual power band, simply move the shifter to the left and use the manual shifting mode.

Jeep gets a bad rap with many reviews. They are designed for off-road use, and the ride quality will be different (tighter, stiffer). They will not accelerate as quickly as other vehicles. This Jeep is not trying to be an Escape or CRV. Once you turn onto a dirt road and get some mud on the tires, this vehicle (and the Wrangler and Cherokee) will shine. It'll go anywhere!!
If someone wants a car to run around town and haul the family, this may not be the best (few cars will be more fun to drive). It is designed for outdoor family use, getting off road, and going camping off the grid. Jeeps should always be evaluated with this in mind. Since I take my Jeeps off the grid, I can't say enough about how much I love them. I just bought my third Jeep (Cherokee Latitude) and I absolutely love it!!

I had this vehicle for about 6 months then decided to trade it in due to spending way too much on gas. That’s really the one of the only few things I hated about the renegade. If you drive mainly around town like I do be prepared to fill up every 4-6 days a week in gas. It’s HORRIBLE city wise. Highway mpg is really good, but again, I rarely use the highway so it was pretty horrible on gas. Plus Jeep needs to put in a bigger gas tank in the vehicle since it doesn’t average that much mpg. 12.2 gallon tank is way too small. Also hope the 2019 version is much more up to date technology wise as well. The nine speed transmission isn’t all that fun either

In the fall of 2017 I purchased a new 2017 Jeep Renegade from a dealer in Anchorage Alaska. I live in a remote Alaskan town with the closest mechanic over 100 miles away - in Canada. I made it clear to the dealer I needed a reliable, sturdy vehicle. The car was fine until the temperature dropped below 20F then it would start - and immediately stall with a noticeable smell of gas. I called the dealer and he recommended using Heet and blamed the bad gas in the town. Heet did nothing and no other car is having the same problem. The dealer is over 700 miles away and I can't have the car towed back. There's no one to work on it here and the dealer is unwilling to do anything more. The car is a princess car - it'll only run if it's warm and sunny. Which means i'm walking to work at 20 below. Moral is don't buy Jeep and don't buy a Jeep Renegade. As soon as possible I'm taking it to another town to trade it in for a Japanese or Korean car. Something reliable.

Ok here in UK 🇬🇧.. I purchased a 2017 trailhawk November last year , this winter we have had over a foot of snow , and I have had cooper ATT discoverer fitted prior to this snow hitting us.. I have tried to get the jeep stuck .. ! Bit every time it just keeps on going... im saying I parked it in 2foot High snow drifts and pulled off road on snow soft wet verges where your angled from the road .
Upwards of a foot deep and ive had no wheel spin that would suggest im in trouble
.. all I can say is .. the renegade is a seriously good little 4x4 .. here in UK 🇬🇧.. I have the 2 litre 170bhp Trailhawk.. I've had subaru forester , and Mercedes gl ..suv .. the jeep is miles apart from those .. if I could pick one thing that I would prefer and thats more ground clearance .. and bigger wheels and tyres .. it runs 215/60 r 17 .. I feel that 225/ 60 on 18 would be an improvement with 10inch ground clearance being better . Its still exceptionally capable even with what it has in Trailhawk spec.. I love it .

19:05 That's because it doesn't use 1st gear. It only uses 1st gear when you specifically tell it to, otherwise it starts off in 2nd, giving you that 4-speed auto tall gearing feel. With a spread of a whopping 9.80, it was either gear it so tall that it would never use 9th, or gear it so short that it would never use first, and Jeep took the latter route.

"The engine is not the most modern...". It certainly IS one of the most modern, naturally aspirated gasoline engines in this class as it features electro-hydraulic variable valve actuation for the air intake. This is one piece of a sophisticated engine that a few years ago would hardly be found in low end vehicles. MultiAir engines up torque and power while lowering consumption.

    • @petersnizek4700

that comes typically with a MultiAir engine.
For example AUDI (or VW Group) FSI (direct fuel injection) gasoline engines are knocking quite a bit like Diesel engines. It can be very well heard when you open the hood. So as the Trailhawk is an entry level model, the noise damming might not be as excessive as in a luxury automobile. But the engine itself is indeed a piece of high-tech. What you hear is the sound of efficiency ;-D

Yet for some reason, all the doors unlocked, except the driver's side door. Then you must use the fob to lock the jeep, which makes a beep. Everyone looks at you as you try pushing the unlock button to finally enter your vehicle.
Ah yes, now you start it up, and your radio says it's "loading" for like 17 seconds, only to play fm radio...

Based on this review, it seems that the renegade accelerates and handles about as well (if not identically) to the 2.4L, 6 speed Compass/Patriot. I like the way it looks but not everyone will agree.
The Compass (which needs to be retired) is well more comfortable and spacious. I'd say this is more of the same repackaged in a quirkier body. I like it but it's still too close to the other crossovers at the moment. Unless they upgrade the off road capabilities and speed, it's not going to sell even as well as the more palatable Compass which can be had for a song right now. I'm excited to see what becomes of the Renegade over the next few years.

I agree about the Compass. It's ugly as a mud fence as well. However, you are wrong about the Renegades not selling well, at least as far as the 4x4s and Trailhawks go. They FLY off the dealer lots in my area. Ive been trying to buy a Trailhawk or a nicely equipped 4x4 Lattitude or Sport for 2 months now. Before I can get to the lot to look at it, it's SOLD. Nothing left but the 2x4 versions in my area or high mileage 4x4s. It seems everybody and their mamma wants the same thing I want: A Jeep Renegade Trailhawk. They were everywhere online before I decided I wanted one, then suddenly POOF, they all vanished, one by one. So irritating. The closest one to me now is 5 hours away.

@@reesedaniel5835 I was proven dead wrong from four years ago... they did NOT retire the Compass but completely revamped it. It’s actually pretty awesome. The Renegades are holding their own, especially the 4x4s and higher trim levels, like you said. If I was buying a first car and couldn’t afford a Wrangler, I’d buy a Renegade. If I was buying a family car and couldn’t afford a Grand Cherokee (which I can’t), I’d buy a Compass (which I did).
I still bet the Compass’ sell better than the Renegades. It’s probably a regional thing. Depends where you live. Nonetheless, I appreciate both models.
