toco toco’s new season starts with Mangaka & Illustrator legend Hisashi Eguchi. Our glimpse into Eguchi’s universe starts at Jimbocho, home of Shuheisha, one of Japan’s top publishing companies. We will follow Eguchi through the streets and places that made the memories of the start of his career, which now extends to almost forty years.
One train ride later, we will head to Kichijoji, Eguchi’s long-time home and current place of work, where we will discover more about his works and find some hints behind his peculiar style. The night will take us to Sasanoha, a small authentic restaurant in the back alleys of Harmonica Yokocho, where Eguchi meets with fellow mangaka, illustrators and editors.
    Special thanks to:

The way Hisashi Eguchi draws girls and women in his illustrative work has a very unique, very human charm to it imo. He draws characters in a very appealing way without exaggerating proportions and features a lot.
As if he's combining the perspective of how a straight woman appreciates other women's beauty, and the perspective of how a straight man appreciates women's beauty. There is a depth and human quality to (at least some of) his illustrations that I don't often see with other artists (men and women alike).
It's as if he recognizes and appreciates the charm and (sometimes erotic) appeal of real women and didn't want to erase or sanitize it for a lack of better word by stylizing too much.
Not that I hate very stylized works, it's just very different.

i thought that was a little tongue in cheek , that he's not uncomfortable with who he is exactly (this is my assumption, a point of view), just finding some logic in context of being a hopeless romantic. But also he means that women are so beautiful in his mind that he has always been jealous of women. I don't think he hates being a man or desires a sex change. He's speaking as an artist. I did see something like a ghost staring back in one of those drawings, so maybe he just drew her as if he was looking in a mirror. Either way, very powerful video piece and very well received. As a crappy non functioning artist i would gobble these up. Instant subscribe.

That`s being trans in a nutshell, most prefer to stay in their assigned gender out of stigma and the conceptions that society has about how a trans person should be like/look like. This experience makes me incredibly sad, that he can only achieve true freedom with his art. Also it doesn`t help the absurd amount of requirements needed for being legally recognized as trans in Japan.

      Not really. It’s pretty normal.
When you want to think of the ideal girl you would consciously want to think about what you like which you see as the ideal. Those ideals are usually also what people doing the thought experiment of “what would I want to be like as the opposite sex?” which they confuse with “what would I be as the opposite sex?” because it’s based on the desire, the want. It’s no different from having the ideal you in your mind, it’s just “I’d be the opposite gender that I am now.”

He is showing us his inner truth on the page, which is so vulnerable and powerful at the same time. I hope he finds the courage and community to show his inner truth in more ways in the future.

And I also wanna add that cis lgb+ people are often treated very differently from trans people, while they're not having the time of their lives being gay either, maybe because it's easier to understand being cis and gay rather than being trans for cishet people but trans people often deal with a lot more discrimination and I believe people became more accepting of cis lgb+ people than trans people altho people are more accepting of trans people now than compared to before too. And even just Japan's laws on legally changing your gender marker or listening to the experiences of even just some japanese trans people should tell you enough.

@@kuroyamaevisekai Japan is one of the most LGBT friendly countries in the world and was so even way before the whole LGBT movement in the west, there has never been laws criminalizing being gay or lesbian (actually the only time such thing existed was because of western influence in the 19th century and was quickly removed).
Also just look at how much mainstream positive representation there was for gay and lesbian characters in japanese mangas and anime since forever, also the amount of the androgenous looks and styles people adopt, the amount of people who dress as women or dress as men contrary to their sex at birth in mainstream TV and music groups/rock bands without any prejudice or discrimination or violence against them, actualkly they are generally adored and most fans look up to them
Japan not having laws allowing gender change doesn't mean anything, why do you want the LGBT experience in other countries to be a copy of the west ? Gender as a concept itself is very rooted in people's culture so why do you want Japan to adopt the western view of it ? People in Japan have been LGBT friendly for centuries with their own culture of how things are done, don't push your western agenda onto other cultures that are already more welcoming than yours.
Western virtue signaling and moral highground is what ruins everything, you guys think your ways are the way thing should be done despite you having the actual history of LGBT violence and discrimination.

I've never seen Hisashi Eguchi's works before but I was absolutely blasted away by this interview. Especially love the amount of nostalgia and a hint of sadness that it carried, really struck home after leaving Taiwan 10 years ago.
When I look at popular manga / anime girls nowaday, most of them are too reliant on sexuality and crazy features but always ends up looking generic. Yet Mr. Eguchi's girls have neither exaggerated bodies proportion nor wild colors and I found myself drawn to them.
Perhaps it is the difference in mindset: Most people draw their dream girls to date while Mr. Eguchi draw the girl he wish he was borned as.

Well, except the part where this was the style back in like the 80’s for manga/anime. Not to mention you see this stuff today still it’s just you have to bother looking because fads change and evolution of the mainstream art is pretty fascinating to just observe.
Not to mention the ideal is still similar. It’s still the ideal girl, it’s just viewed from a different perspective. It’s still and ideal that is seen from an angle of love, of comfort, of being true to ones heart.
“I wish for this” “I like that” your just adding on the parts of either “I’d like to be this if I was a girl” or “I’d like this in a girlfriend” which aren’t that dissimilar simply because in wanting to find a partner you want to have someone that gels well with you. So you usually end up wanting someone that shares similar views to you, your ideals, for a healthy relationship to blossom. Meanwhile the ideal you wish you were as another gender would be following the line of logic of “I want to feel good about myself and love what I am”. Remember, the first person you have to love is yourself or else how can you really love another as a partner or even other people in general?

Really admire his work Rojin Z has amazing character designs! His philosophy surrounding female subjects being sort of inspired by a frustration of having not been born female or at least a fascination with their expressive charm is interesting, I remember reading a Gustav Klimt book in which one of the contributors posited the same idea about Klimt's choice of primarily female subjects.
