    A family friend use to keep his jet boat at our dock. Lucky me. He gave us kids rides and took us skiing. It was a 454 corvette engine with a Berkeley jet. Sometimes he ran dry headers on it. When he did the lake patrol would try to catch him. He never got caught unless the patrol just sat at our dock waiting for him to return. Days before the cell phone. He called the house and asked if they were waiting for him. If we said yes he found somewhere to hide out for awhile. A couple times he just beached it. The boat was a chick magnet. Unfortunately for us kids who want to ride in it all the time. When I skied behind it he loved to tease me noand throw a roster tail. Let me tell that hurts. I thought I would be a smart ass and try to ski though to the side. Lesson learned. This was in the late 70s and early 80s. On West Okoboji lake. Ron Van Pelt was the owner of that awesome jet boat. He gave many rides to people. We did get turned in for catching ducks with a fishing net. But always let the ducks go right away. Great times growing up. Ron also raced cars. Every once in a while when I tell this story about Ron ( we called him Itch) someone will remember Ron or had a ride in his boat. If you happened to be someone who got to meet Ron please tell me what times did you get to meet him and if you rode in his boat. Would love to hear about it. Unfortunately we lost our friend a couple years ago. I really loved Ron he was an amazing guy. I remember his gas petal was a big bare foot. Ron was like my second dad. I will never forget those fun years growing up on West Lake Okoboj with uncle Itch! Naturally I have a obsession with jet boots now. Hoping someone to mean another person who knew Ron! Happy boating everyone!

      Totally BS! He is on a lake. There is no getting away from lake patrol. The very idea someone would risk that for a loud header ticket, dumb story and sounds like u are pretending to be that made up character in your mind.

    Growing up int the 70's on the water was so awesome. My parents had dear friends who owned a jet boat with an blown Old's 455. It was so rad. This was a blue metallic flake finish with this huge motor sitting there with the blower and supercharger. It was about a 28 footer I believe. But once it was up and planed out, there was only the back 5 feet touching the water, and that was occasionally. The owner would ski barefoot while his wife drove the boat. I remember riding a thing called a Torpedo that was shaped like a hotdog and you could actually steer to one side or the other. I would get off to one side, cut it hard to the other when a large boat would pass us and jump his wake, sometimes coming six feet out of the water. How can a kid grow up today without those kind of stories?

    The foot throttle doubles as a "dead mans switch" so when you get thrown overboard, the boat doesn't keep on going, like with a conventional hand throttle in a boat.

    • @walkingman9171
      @walkingman9171 Před 4 lety +9

      Yes it will keep on going, even at idle it will usually be faster than you can swim. I put on a lever throttle and a tethered kill switch, better and safer.

    Never been a fan of a jet drive (poor handling and slow, let alone a cigarette butt will clog them up) stern drive will get you the most out of the big block.. What’s up with the steering wheel in the wrong side, that was odd? That foot throttle can be a trip with that set up (jet drive and a big block) I’ve been on the Ohio river for over 40+yrs and love boating. Us ol boys have a saying about boating..

    Jet Drive Boats actually are the only ones that have brakes, You can switch from Forward to Reverse, even at high revs, the thrust will then slow you down very fast
    With that kind of Increase in Power, you might want to consult with the Drive manufacturer about an Optimal Impeller. That kind of HP should be putting you closer to the Century Mark, even taking into account the Inefficiencies of a Jet Drive

    • @doccyclopz
      @doccyclopz Před 4 lety +1

      You wouldn't want to be going 100 in one of these old Mod-vees, these hulls were never meant to go that fast. Can they ? yes they can with about a 1000hp. BUT the driver would be playing with fire at that speed. IMHO If you want to go 100mph in a Jetboat safely get yourself a Gullwing or a Tunnel hull.

      @mindeloman - One time (years ago) I was on a very crowded lake, returning to pick up my downed skier. One of those ever-present gremmies on a jet ski came off and went under my boat as I was turning. Everyone was horrified. I cut the throttle, and searched the lake anxiously. He popped up, with no harm done.
      Had there been a propeller, I would've needed a fishing pole, since he would've been chum.
      When you factor in maintenance / repair costs (car engine - compared to touchy and temperamental outboard - not to mention the respective drives),
      initial cost for a nice 450 Horse auto engine - compared to well... how much was a 450 Horse outboard?,
      places I can go, that a propeller just won't,
      and the safety factor,
      your statement is just silly.
      BTW - I have always thought how stupid an entire line of 4 or 5 outboards on the transom looks, when the same job can be handled easily by one or two automotive engines.

    Are Earles hose and lines (5:42) coast gaurd approved? (they need to be or you are in violation operating a vessel that is noncompliant) You might be sorry upon inspection by authorities... Just an experienced boat mechanics observation.

      @@bigboreracing356 You haven't grown up on the water. The Coast Gaurd has rules (treated like law) for every part of a boats power plant. You don't mess with the Coast Gaurd, they will tow you off the water and hand you over to the local authorities real quick. And I am familiar with Earles products, first class for sure but without the proper classification numbers (often required to be printed ON THE HOSE) this a is poor example to make. The CG doesn't care how good you think it is, they test and certify all and boaters must comply or face fines....... just fyi

      @@bigboreracing356 Happy New Year! My video clearly states the technique is for disassembly only and shows a method of removing the spring without a compressor. Not everyone has them. My statement about the jet boat is 100% true. You are also correct that on most inland lakes he would recieve no scrutiny from authorities unless he was driving carelessly. And while the same thing could be said if he were driving in the Saint Clair river (an international waterway) near me the standard is much higher here than in a small lake.

    • @danwilcox7650

      I see go fast boaters get towed in and fined every summer, mostly after authorities witnessed dangerous driving technique and then checked them out for compliance in other areas usually starting with safety equipment, of which water hoses that connect through hull are included..

    • @danwilcox7650
      @danwilcox7650 Před 4 lety +1

      Let me be clear I think Earls hose and plumbing products are first quality. I also think it's slightly irresponsible to recommend non-conforming products for marine use no matter how good they are. I agree you'd be hard-pressed to find a better quality hose but in the relatively unlikely event that your boat got scrutinized by authorities you could be subject to some fairly expensive fines just for something silly as having the world's best hose installed on your boat instead of one that the coast guard deems legal. I've grown up boating an international waterway and have 50 years experience running a boat on the saint Clair River I don't mean to belittle anyone or any company but knowledge is power.

    People don't get jet boats, all these comments are funny about your bass boats and outboards. Jet boats are like driving a 66 GTO. Does it turn well? No. Does it stop? Nope. Is it fast in a straight line compared to modern cars? Negative. Is it comfortable? No. Top speed? Slow.... but is it cool? Absolutely. Anybody can go buy a new outboard, these are hot rids, built not bought, and each one is unique.

    That old-school glass boat is severely limited in top speed by the old, heavy fiberglass construction, non-matching jet pump & old hull design. If that engine was in the modern Canadian-made Outlaw Eagle aluminium built, semi-tunnel design with the right pump...that 680 HP engine would break you into the 100+ MPH range easily.

    Actually with a jet you do have a braking system. Throw diverter in reverse and that boat will stop on a dime. With an in out unit you will have a boat load of broken gear teeth.
