- When I responded to the ad for a 1958 Ford F-100 in Thornton Colorado, I had no idea that the first episode of Rust Bucket Rembrandts was about to unfold before me. All I can say is that old trucks have a way of inspiring new stories.
Special thanks to our generous car community:

Who’s cutting onions here.. this is definitely an emotional video. I’m 40 now, and my dad passed down his ‘57 F100 to me when I was 12. This is the first vehicle I sat behind the wheel of. I drove my ‘57 through high school and throughout my Marine Corps days in the early 2000s. I’m currently building my ‘57 and hope to have it finished so my dad can drive it a few times before his time comes. He’s 72 now my ‘57 is what brought me dad and I together. I can’t wait to have the ‘57 so my boys and my dad can cruise it together. Three generations brought together over one truck. My 1957 Ford F100.
Thats a rare Gem
I found one and am making it 4x4
Thank you for sharing. My Dad bought a '59 brand new for $2300.00. It was his first new vehicle. He was an WWII Army veteran and at 35 was finally able to afford a new vehicle. He passed in 2004 but I still have his truck and have been trying to restore it for many years. Maybe when I am done you can add another story to your channel. Like the commenter below, I was also a Marine and followed my dad's steps in the military and love for this old truck.
Wow! I know that feeling sorta! I have owned my 1969 ford f250 crew since a year old 445 k later its been sitting and waiting for a major rehab. 74 years old, and thinking it's time to start restoration and get it back on the road again. Been driving my 70 Sport Custom to a point that I want the four door back on the road. Lotsa memories and it has been a fun part of my children's lives, doubt either truck will ever leave the family
I feel like I’m going to be just like him someday with my 86 C10. I’m 16 now and hope I never have to sell it
Wow 500,000 miles, that truck was part of his soul
This video brought tears to my eyes. I'm such an old truck lover and am trying to buy a 58 f100 right now to keep forever and pass onto my favorite human being alive. My grandson. Some people will just never understand what our old trucks truly mean to us fellas. I'll take an old tired creaky worn out truck over something new any day
What a fantastic thing to do, wow really felt the emotions as if it was me. Found this video after getting our 1959 f600 going that’s been in our family since 1970.
,I will remember this heartwarming story, God bless you
This video really pulled at my heart strings .
beautiful! amazing story, thank you.
well this is the best thing ive seen all weekend!!!
This is such a great thing to do for an old man the wonderful years he’s had in that truck and memories he formed are unbeat what you did is honorable and to be honest it pulled a tear out of me
Thanks for watching. You're right, a good chunk of Mel's life was spent in that truck and that's why he's so connected to it.
I'm not afraid to say that brought a tear to my eye what did for that old man and his truck was awesome , great job !
cant believe channel this doesn't have more subscribers! Great production. Great story all of it
It brought tears to my eyes. Man and his truck, like a man and his dog. Doesn't get much better then that! Just like aged wisky. Great job with great weward. Thanks for sharing.
Truly a great story I came across this video just looking as I'm looking at a old 1960 F100 to purchase tomorrow I've think I already made my mind up after watching this🤗
Hey Scott. Thanks for checking out the story. Good luck with the '60. Hope it all works out. Let us know
My god this was so beautiful! He has so much love for his baby. He didnt actually sell it right? He still has it right? If you love something this much, you cant part with it!
This is just what I gleaned from this vlog with Mel and Ol' Blue.
You see Eric was granted the oppotunity to find a new owner for 'Ol Blue' being it wasn't a good fit for his long frame. Eric then purchased 'Ol Blue' with a promise to find the right 'New' owner. But first a couple improvements were neccessary. Improvements complete Eric wanted to give Mel one more chance to get behind the wheel and actually have the throttle pushed hard to feel the horses put his spine deep into the seat back.
There were many people that made this possible and everyone that has watched this is subscribing to this channel, I know I just did. Such a great way to bring a compelling automotive historical and personal story to our combustion powered hearts.
Fantastic ! Movie / Big screen worthy !!! great work
Thanks Amir! Appreciate you watching
You made a subscriber out of me and brought a tear to my eyes. Helping my Dad on a project like that right now: my Dad's 1950 Mercury. R10 (OD) transmission and a Hearse shifter is what we're wrangling at present. I will definitely be reaching out to the shops you mentioned here if I get stuck.
...I'm local too (Lakewood).
Thanks James. Glad you related to the story and good luck to you and your dad with the '50 Merc. Let us know if you need a hand!
Wow, thank you for making this video. 😢
Damn you got me on that one seeing him drive that truck by himself not like he was a little kid and driving his wife and driving the guy and then driving again by himself that was so beautiful I'm not going to go into it I've been through a lot a whole lot in but thank you I needed that God bless you all
Oh my what an emotional story .. brought me to tears almost. Wonderful narrated and pictured. I might end up the same since I’m 60 now and own my ‘60 Fridge for 32 years. It had the same blue color back then. I hope I can make another 21 years to catch up to Mel, until I also might have to give it away. Subscribed !
My 85 year old grandfather has a 1951 f1
I'm going through an "old Mel" story right now with my '65 F250, and I don't feel so all alone now that I've seen the video. Not everybody understands the depth of bond between an old mechanic and his truck, but you do, thanks.
I can feel your feeling on this Roy....I'm a bit younger yet still have my first pick up...a 1970 f250 Camper Special, bought it when i was 21 and still have it.
Thanks Roy. The great thing about old mechanics is that they're usually happy to help a future old mechanic like me. I have learned so much from Mel
We can become so attached to our vehicles they go through so much of our ups and downs in our lives. Great story and camera work.
Sooo cool!!!
Fantastic video that will live on forever to share the memory of Mel and his F100. Outstanding.
Good video great story
Wonderful story, wonderfully presented. You do good work.
It matters. I hope you do more of this sort of thing, as the world surely can use it.

Great Story! Regards from Germany.
Best video on you tube.🙏
These vans are unique and we always have to keep them as they are because one day that will make us remember many things that happened in these vans that, even though we did not witness them, make us nostalgic and make us understand more about our past, this man took one out of me. tear .
More videos please
That drive around the track reinvigorated him, you could see it. Good on you guys for telling his story.
Thanks Michael. Mel is the youngest 81 year old I know but you're right, he was like a teenager that day at the track. Appreciate your support, Michael!
As a guy in his 60s who drives a 1957 f100 I can relate
Well done,
Thanks Russ. Appreciate you watching!
That is a Very Sweet Gesture you did!! You will be rewarded many times over for the kindness you showed this Man and His Daughter! Big Shout out for the Memories and the kindness shown, Thank You fir the Video
Before I wrote this I liked and subscribed. What a awesome story. I would like to say thanks to the people who helped out on this project. To see the joy in that man’s face should make everyone smile.
Wonderful story, such a good deed for the old gent. The '58 was so much like our '59 F100, 3 on the tree, 292 V8. Drove it to high school last day. Would ride in the box while my brother did donuts in a gravel parking lot, late '60s. Good memories, that truck...
Outstanding video! Well done.
That's a beautiful truck but also sad to hear this story.
awwwww, this is awesome. As a young man I had a '58 and life made it impossible to keep my ol truck but from the day she left to now I regret seeing her go and have been on the search for her or another. No doubt there is a connection between a guy and an ol truck. Love those trucks so I can relate to Mel and Ol Blue. Thanks for such a great video. Shalom.
So glad Mel's story connected with you! I hope you find your '58 or another and relive your days behind the wheel of a great old truck. Thank you for watching and commenting
@@rustbucketrembrandts8082 Update: I did find "another" truck. I just got a 60 f100......lots of work to do to her, but the journey continues. Thanks guys....
You are very special person go that far for someone who is overwhelmed with the future loss of a family friend God Bless you and yours
Thanks Jesse. It's easy to do something nice for nice people. Thanks for your support!
A great story well told. A Rembrandt with a video camera for sure.
Wow. Thanks Scott. The "Rembrandts" in Rust Bucket Rembrandts refers to the vehicles themselves as works of art but also applies to those who work on them, drive them or even look at them and appreciate the beauty, just like the Dutch Master himself when he looked upon the subjects he painted. Hope you keep watching the series and appreciate your support
I'm 6'6" and drive a '60 f100 as a daily. It helps having a floor shift. Beautiful story.
Thanks Joel! Congrats on making your '60 Ford and 6'6" frame work together!
Nice old fridge! I have a 59, should be on the road early summer! I can hardly wait. Thank you for sharing and God Bless Mel. …….Jim
Thats definitely going to be me in a number of years. A lot of people don’t understand the bond a car guy has with a machine but I sure do. Cool channel.
Glad you understand and appreciate the bond between man and machine. Thanks for watching!
Thank you Carrie for sharing this with me. Love you and uncle Mel
Why would anyone sell such a family treasure …. Blows my mind …
What a fantastic video!! You need MANY more subscribers!!!
Thanks Brenda! We are working on more great content. Glad we've got you on our side
I have such a love for muscle cars because of the great memories of my dad racing and working on his car with him growing up. When I see certain cars, I swear my heart skips a beat. I sent this along to Dad-he will love it. Great job, Erik. Nice to see you!
Hi Eryn! I remember Garner and I riding with your dad and Uncle Rick to a track in their drag car ('68 Camaro possibly). If you watch closely at about 30 seconds in, you'll see my dad in his Triumph TR3 outside Bompa & Nanny's barn, circa late 50's, early 60's
What a beautiful story! Big💙 for ole’ Blue!!
Thanks for watching. Love the blue heart
A fella did a fantastic job right there. Damn, that hits you right in the feels. Awesome.
Thanks for the compliment! I'm going to borrow your saying, "hits you right in the feels." Love it
Speechless 👍👍👍
So glad you liked it and appreciate you taking time to comment. Filming a very powerful story in California this weekend. Stay tuned!
Glad I found your channel and will spread the word. Real people with real stories is always the best.
Totally agree with you, Gregory. Thanks for watching and spreading the message!
You knocked it out of the park on this. Truly heartwarming
Thanks Spencer. So glad the story made an impact.
That was just awesome! Totally relatable. Have owned my 68 Camaro since 1980. Cannot fathom how I’d feel if I ever had to get rid of it. You made a subscriber out of me!
Everything captured in this video is what this hobby is all about. Thanks for giving Mel the time of his life!
A 1958 F-100 is on my truck bucket list, easily the sharpest looking truck Ford ever produced! (Next to maybe a 1969 of course haha).
Keep up the good work!
Thanks Bj! Mel is a great guy and so it was rewarding to see him get behind the wheel again, even if it scared me on that first lap :)
Awesome video! Can't believe I'm just the 38th subscriber! Getting ready to share this to some F100 groups. Let see if we can't get you a few more subs!
Thanks for subscribing and promoting the series! Appreciated
What a great story. You did very well with the editing to make it all very interesting.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed Mel and Ol' Blue's story
What a fantastic video. Love this so much.
Thank you for your comment. We are working on another incredible story and hope you stay tuned
Job well done! Mel is a incredible man. He has a heart of gold and am thrilled to see you captured his emotion and love for his old blue. I hope to see more in the future. Again you did a incredible job !! Oh I forgot to ask about the leg lights in old blue!! Lol
Thanks for watching Teresa! Ol' Blue is really like family to Mel and Carrie and that bond is genuine. You'll have to ask Mel about the "leg lights." :-)
Wow Erik! What a great story well told. It brought a tear to my eyes. Your passion is going to resonate with a lot of people. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks Terry! I'm grateful for you and Laura and your early support and encouragement of my fixation on old cars.
I am glad to have found your story, even with the twinge of melancholy it brought.
--I'm currently nearing the point of putting my '59 F100 (similar color and same '58 grille as Mel's) back on the road. My dad gave it to me almost 40 years ago when I was 10 and said I could have it, if I got it running. So, it taught me a lot and served me through high-school and younger years...now as I look to retirement I'm excited to put it back to service again.
--As I watched, it was easy to relate to Mel, though hard to bear the thought of myself getting to Mel's position. I had not previously considered what my last drive in "the '59" would be like...So, I guess that's what makes your piece artistic... I'll just hope I do it with Mel's dignity.
Hi Wesley, thanks for sharing the story of you, your dad and the '59 F100. What a great incentive your dad gave you to get 'er running. I guess the best we can do is live life now so that there are few regrets when age limits some of things we can do. Thanks for watching the episode - it means a lot
My 58Ford style side 8ft box and it was an early model made in February of 58 the only difference is late model 58 s is the turn signals on a early were round and in the front on late were rectangle in the bottom of the grill
Nice production quality. Subscribed. Looking forward to more stories.
That`s great to see, and very generous of you guys. I remembered seeing the ad for this truck, and just had to watch. Great work!
Alec, thanks for watching and commenting. Stay tuned. We are working on more stories that show how these old cars and trucks give us great memories and meaning for generations. Appreciate your support
well done, this is really something. I love that you did this for him, it's so great. I'm glad to have met you and am able to help you. it's the least I could do. You sir are an amazing man. keep up the good work. The quality of the video and the way you were able to capture these moments were incredible. I can't wait to see and hear what's next. Thank you for this.
Thanks John! You are a good man. I appreciate what you did and I'm glad that Mel's story connected with you. Talk to you soon. Thanks again
Great story and video. I’m looking forward to your future installments.
Thank you for your comment. Stay tuned - more on the way. Appreciate your interest!
I didn't know this channel was this new and only has 42 subs. This is pretty incredible. I'll be heading up to the family farm and I hope to get my late grandfather's '79 F150 with a 351c (allegedly he swapped in a Cleveland - I wouldn't put it past him!) while I'm there. Hopefully I'll be able to make more memories of that truck.
Thanks for watching! Sounds like a great road trip when you mention family farm and grandpa's old Ford truck. She's waiting for you to get her back on the road. Appreciate the support
This is a great video! Thank you
Thanks Bret! Glad you enjoyed it. We are working on more content. Stay tuned
Awesome job fellas.
Thanks Chris! Glad you enjoyed it
Taillights for these 1957-66 Ford Pickups were supplied by International Harvester if my hunch is on the money.
This is just what I gleaned (besides the salty secretions upon my cheeks) from this vlog, in case like @ek6648 you believe Mel had 'Ol Blue' return to his garage...
Mel and Ol' Blue and now Eric whom would be the middle man to take 'Ol Blue' and to foster this F-100, this fine piece of a man's life story in order to facilatate 'Ol Blue' on the journey to locate a new owner and home for many miles and smiles to follow.
You see Eric was granted the oppotunity to find a new owner for 'Ol Blue' being it wasn't a good fit for his long frame. Eric then purchased* 'Ol Blue' with a promise to find the right 'New' owner.
*this aspect of what I thought was the arrangement may be not quite how things worked exactly, but whatever and however 'ol Blue' moves on to the next life that awaits that Rembrant with some well deserved rust, the whole story just was so well captured by 'RBR' ...now I'll be going on to see what else Eric has to peruse, maybe even a follow up as this vlog has been out for some 12 months already.
Really good video love what you are doing something I hope to be able to do with tractors
Thanks BIBSTER. I often see old Farmall's or Ford tractors when I'm out scouting on the backroads and they are works of beauty too. Good luck with your project!
What a shame to see the F100 badge is missing from the hood emblems on (nearly) all 1958's I've ever seen. Could someone point the way to a replica source so I can complete mine again? Thanks for this outstanding video!
Glad you enjoyed Mel's story. Not aware of anyone who reproduces the F-100 badge for the '58 hood spears. Would be great if someone did. Thanks
Hurts just to watch. I'll be there in twenty short years, and still don't have my truck.
Thanks Janice. I would recommend finding an old truck to share the next 20 years with. 🙂
What year did the passenger and driver side window scallops show up? It's a great signature....
Such a brilliant video in many ways and edited to perfection, can't wait for the next one, havnt read through all the comments so apologies if its been asked but what has happened to old blue, did the big blue girl find a new home?
Thanks Bradley! Appreciate you watching and thanks for the comments. As of now, Ol' Blue is still with Mel. The truck needs a bit more work before Mel's comfortable putting it back on the market. I think we all hope he finds a way to keep it, right? 🙂
Beautiful cinematography...heartfelt storytelling! Incredibly touching. I wish you could have owned it...by the way, how tall are you?
Thanks Coco! I'm between 6'3 and 6'4 so unfortunately Ol' Blue was a bit too confined for me. Glad you enjoyed the story
@@rustbucketrembrandts8082 I was afraid so…I came across your short as I was waiting on the delivery of my own 1960 F100. When I saw the mention about not fitting I went “uh oh”. I’m 6’4 and two days ago I took delivery of the truck. What a wonderful piece of machinery…unfortunately as you said…it’s cramped in there. Non the less, I will be meeting with my mechanic to see what are some mods we could do to at least make the drive a little more bearable. :)
Thanks for the info! Can’t wait for your next short!
@@cocobermudez7881 You can buy a few inches by moving the gas tank (if it's currently behind the front seat). Tilt steering wheel will also help. Good luck with your '60!
Any more coming? What’s the running gear in your panel?

Tar? Tar? Tar?😅😮😮😅😂
My old man has a 1965 Harley Davidson Electra Glide he bought in his twenties in the mid seventies after he got out the marines and back from over seas her name is Ole Blue her paints blue space metallic and pearl white but Harley’s is slightly off .. he would die if he couldn’t ride that bike .
Thanks for the reply and great story about your dad and his Harley. Sounds like a beautiful bike and your dad's bond with her is something I love to hear about. Thanks again
@@rustbucketrembrandts8082 hey thank you this video helps restore my faith in humanity .. that’s what life’s really about you guys are awesome
@@justskinnot2seriously71 Thanks for your support! Mel and Carrie are great people and Ol' Blue is an awesome truck so it was really satisfying to work on this episode with them
