Street Running, Bad Track, Rough Rails, and an ALCo RS27 on the Minnesota Commercial

  • The Minnesota Commercial Railroad operates on some unique, and interesting industrial trackage. One industry even has some street running, as seen in this video. Street running is a very rare thing these days, and hard to come by in active service.
We start off seeing the train bringing a loaded car across University Ave as it heads to 'Clay' / WestRock. Power today is MNNR 316, the ONLY active RS27 in the world, and one of two in existence. The tracks snake through the street, as they negotiate their way down the line. Years of service have turned the rails into a rough ride; making it bad track and a rough ride for the crew. We can see that there used to be many other customers along this route, but clay is the only active one at this point. This is one of the more unique switching operations in the Twin Cities, and seeing this switched is rare!

Thank you. This brought back memories of when I was a kid. My father worked for a trucking company and the terminal was where Pelham Blvd crosses I-94. I recall being amazed at seeing the train coming right at us in the middle of the street. In those days that area was full of heavy industry and trucking companies with train movements everyday.

Great stuff, especially the quad-copter video! I did notice a "No Train Horn" sign next to a crossing where the engineer was definitely using one. LOL

As the engineer in this video, I'll tell you why. That crossing has such bad visibility from the road that it makes more than enough sense to make a little noise there. Too many idiots.

@@BNSF9187 Agreed 100%! I'm a crew member on the Minnesota Transpiration Museum's "Osceola & St. Croix Valley" passenger trains and there are several pedestrian crossings in a state park along the line. Technically I guess that whistling isn't required for these crossings, but our engineers do anyway.

Great video and catch! There's a decent stretch of street running down here in Alabama on the Alabama & Tennessee River Railway in downtown Gadsden. Always a treat to see them operating on it.

Wow, nice video!! I like all the street running footage, I noticed the conductor had to get down and flag a couple of crossings.

  • @bobsbasementhotrains3020

Great vídeo and the drone shorts take the video to the next level. I do some railfaning in the twin cities when I can and in the past always wanted photos of MC switching this area. Are there any other customers in this area. I see another line on the block south of this one ,is it in use?
