Why the A-10 Warthog is Irreplaceable

- When enemy ground forces have you surrounded, you count on the A-10 Warthog to make things all better...and give you a chance to fight another day.
The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is also known as the A-10 Warthog, or just “The Hog” or "The Hawg", and gets its nickname from all its bumps and protrusions.
It’s ability to take out armored vehicles also earns it the moniker of the Tankbuster.
It has also become synonymous with Close Air Support.
Soft targets, Tanks, Air Defense Systems, Booby-Trapped Buildings; it doesn’t matter. The A-10 can eat them for breakfast, and be home in time for lunch.
Despite 40 years of Air Force Brass trying to take the A-10 out of the sky, it still flies, strangely enough, because of the Army’s fight to keep it protecting troops on the ground.

The C variant is actually quite new, and honestly apart from air to ground radar and more speed or more gun ammo, I don't see what we could really add to it except a newer suite of sensors and electronic warfare (and those don't require a new variant).
Keep in mind that aircraft are constantly upgraded, like Block for the Falcon and Suites for the Warthog, but they generally don't include massive changes like a new airframe like the Hornet to the Super Hornet.

From a few minutes of research, there have been a total of 6 A-10s lost during Desert Storm/Shield from varying AA. During that time, they also destroyed more than 900 Iraqi tanks, 2,000 other military vehicles and 1,200 artillery pieces.
That's an example of one war. I'd say that in nearly 30 years of relatively active service, that example of kills/losses is pretty exemplary.

As of today, we still have NOTHING that can duplicate the attack capabilities of the A-10. It would be sheer lunacy to "Retire" the A-10 with out a better replacement.
Until they can come up with better, we NEED the A-10, more then ever.
Build about 250 new ones. Then, maybe retire the oldest or most patched together airframes.
NOTHING ELSE is logical.
The problem is we can't build new ones. Fairchild Republic is gone, all of the people who engineered or built them are retired or dead and all of the tooling is long gone. It was made in a different era and it would cost too much to tool up an assembly line and manufacture new planes that are based on 40 year old technology. It makes more sense to start from scratch. The A-10 is supposed to fly at least through 2030 though so who knows, they might just keep flying them.
Tim Shattuck
I believe our next big War is likely to involve China. And, unless some fool releases the Nuclear Genie, we will sure as hell NEED the A-10 !
Boeing got tasked to up-wing them I heard. More surface area, more hardpoints.
All we need now is for someone to figure out how to mount a tactical laser system onto them.
@@FreakTimmah That depresses me. But are they really so high-tech that no-one can realistically reverse engineer them? I suspect the real answer lies in the military contract departments. I suspect the A-10s would probably be too cheap to get a major profit margin from. Cynical old me... Not so many years ago in the UK we scrapped a Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina because its wing had time-expired. The argument was that it was prohibitively expensive to rebuild the wing to the exact pattern. Nearly broke my heart! If I'd been at the committee meeting I would have said 1/ Do it now because in 10 years' time it will look cheap as chips 2/ You don't have to be slavishly exact - technology has moved on and some of it can be done more simply. 3/The skills are transferable - and who knows, the parts to be built can be sold elsewhere, so there could be payback (for the A-10, sell some to the UK) 4/ A good aircraft will be kept flying.
Now an old WW2 amphibian versus something like the Hog is maybe chalk and cheese, but just shaking heads and saying it can't be done makes me grit my jaw. How about giving an A-10 to Mike Patey and let him do his stuff? With guys like him around you don't need MAGA hats!
@@travelbugse2829 It's not that it can't be done, it could be. It's more of an issue of budgets, politics and the different branches of the service wanting different things. The F-35 was supposed to be this great, affordable, do-it-all plane that would be mass produced and sold to other countries to offset the development costs. Close air support is one of the roles it's supposed to fill, meaning that it would eventually (somehow) replace the legendary A-10. So far it's been a very costly program and it hasn't lived up to a lot of the initial promises. It's just entering service now so it'll be a while before anyone can say for sure if it was worth it or not.
My grandfather, Maj. Charles R Hoffman was one of the main engineers(from what I understand) on the A-10s weapons systems. The man was a meticulous engineer who could fit 8 times more stuff in the back of a Ford Taurus than physics should allow for, I've joked for a long time he'd have been a Tetris grand champion, and that that's why the A-10 carries so many weapons. The stories he told me about testing the main gun, the GAU Avenger, were amazing.
Your grandpas great mind has helped save many American lives with this legendary bird.
You may not be allowed to put your memories and anecdotes into a book. But it would be great to read about your grandfather and his work. If any family member is still alive, ask them as for much info as possible. History will thank you, as well as the Americans (and others) whose lives have been saved.
@@travelbugse2829 I'll ask my family about this, I know my grandad wrote about his service in WW2, I've heard stories of his work on other aircraft like the f-4 phantom, I'm not sure if he wrote about his experiences designing systems for aircraft though.
The A10 is the Infantrymans guardian angel.
@Libs Hate Montesquieu still impressive for an old plane though
Not really. More CAS missions have been flown by Vipers.
I would come out of retirement if the Army got this bird. The A-10 is a bad ass plane!
The A-10 I'd a badass plane, why do people want it out of the Air Force, just update all the Systems
It's not just the systems, the airframes take a pounding and are reaching the end of their service lives.
@@Aeronaut1975 maybe they are, but keep them in service for a few more years, even if it's two more
Systems will do for the time. What the jet needs are a fuselage program and new motors.
captinchris YT The Congress keeps giving the AF money, but brass has no intention of using that money on keeping the A-10 operational. Such a shame, because it’s not broken, all ground troops love it, and it simply can’t be replaced by the F-35. The F-35 is a lot of things, but you just can’t get a better ground attack aircraft than the A-10. The dedicated 30mm/other armaments just can’t beat what a multi-role jet has to offer. (In my opinion it’s mainly an interceptor. Between the stealth, countermeasures, advanced radar, and other features, it’s clear what the main priority was in making it.)
@@MRCLXWN03 The A-10s are currently being outfitted with new wings, the Air Force is now planning to keep them in service until around 2030-2035.

A reason to go to Las Vegas in November is when Nellis Air Force base has their open days.
It would take far too long to explain what this base actually is (home of the Thunderbirds demo squadron, the training center for all AF planes, the school for ICBMs etc etc) but the main function is to provide realistic war training for the military. In doing so certain planes are very well represented. They have a LOT of A10s around, and you can go and see the A10 and gun up close and personal. There are also BRRRRRRRTTT demonstrations.
You can see the plane, and you may be able to get in the cockpit. Just don't go past the barriers, as much of this base is top secret and off limits. They have active SEAL teams protecting this base with Las Vegas's famous skyline in the distance.
Absolutely nothing to hate about this plane! Your love it shows in the quality of the video. Great job guys.
Thanks for the kind words. Yeah it’s not going to be easy to replace the A-10
Engines are still underpowered. This is only a problem for overloaded takeoff.
I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath, UK while in the Air Force in the mid 90s. We were home to three squadrons of F-15. We had transient A-10 visiting. Watching them take off and go straight up and back in the direction they came was impressive.
I love the A-10, I considered joining the Air Force out of highschool because I wanted to fly them, but I honestly think that a lot of the die-hard loyalty to the platform is from people only thinking about fighting the last war, instead of planning for the next one. The A-10 was amazing against the level of AA we saw in the 80s and 90s, and it's amazing in the uncontested airspace we operate in *right now*. The reason the Air Force is pushing the F-35 and linked weapons platforms so hard is that it's worried about CAS capabilities if we find ourselves in a shooting conflict with another major power like Russia or China who have more modern AA systems, in which case planes like an A-10 wouldn't even be able to operate over the front until other forces (including F-35s) clear out AA threats.
@@metanumia You can't make an attack airplane like the A-10 stealthy, it just doesn't work. The fundamentals of each airframe are just far too different. In a full scale war against Russia or China, dedicated ground attack aircraft would be basically useless, by the time we achieve the air superiority required to operate them, most ground armor would probably be in full scale retreat or even surrender. IMO, the A-10 program should be downsized and replaced with planes like the A-29 Super Tucano which are both better at running COIN operations and much cheaper to fly. (It seems that the airforce is taking the opposite approach though, downsizing the A-10 and replacing it with more expensive, less effective strike aircraft.)
@@metanumia Great analysis! I still reckon the Hog has a way to go. No aircraft is invulnerable. The Serbs shot down that F-117 stealth fighter by no other means than using spies watching what got airborne at the US airbase. Stealth wasn't much help. Upgrade the A-10, keep it flying while the new design is developed but make sure the replacement has those features you talk about. Unfortunately, politicians are involved...
@@travelbugse2829 Thanks, I agree! I fully support a service-life extension program (or SLEP) authorization for the A-10 airframes still in-service. We should keep them flying and well-maintained with some minor upgrades (perhaps a few more ECM/CM capabilities or more-digitized avionics?) until a proper, dedicated attack/CAS jet is in IOC-phase.
But, I just don't think the F-35, or any current/near-future autonomous systems, could ever fully provide the same specialized ground-support capabilities and command-options the A-10 does. So, the USAF should definitely start sending out secret requests for proposals for a dedicated replacement bird. The replacement should be affordable to acquire and maintain, it should still have a powerful, high-caliber, fuselage-integrated, gatling-style cannon. And it should use as many modern and near-future advancements to RCS-reduction and pilot situational awareness as possible while using common, open-architecture technologies and COTS parts previously-developed and fully-tested from other aircraft and weapons systems.
If the replacement aircraft program is managed by a highly-motivated, strong-willed, firm, and intelligent Pentagon acquisitions and development team who can set strict timelines and rules for the defense contractors to adhere to, with specific strategies for the prevention of cost-overruns in place from the start, then the USAF could end up with a truly worthy successor. (Easier said than done, but surely possible!)

Bad ass is something that never gets old. The A-10 is just that.
I was an A-10 crew chief for five years in the 80's and simply loved it! (And still do!!)
I watched a few take offs and landings and an agility demonstration at an airshow in 1992. This bullet hose can do some eye popping aerial hi-jinks.
I handled a disarmed practice round and a penetrator projectile. At the time, I thought that bullet weighed about 20 lbs but now I think it's more like 4 or 5 lbs. Anyway, it's a huge, pointy chunk of depleted uranium.
In spite of the enormous gun, it has a rather friendly and inviting appearance in comparison to fighter aircraft, much more down to earth, no pun intended.

I am really surprised no one mentioned it yet, but there is an aircraft simulator which feature the A-10C with highly realistic flight model, avionic and systems.
The sim is called "DCS World" (DCS stand for Digital Combat Simulator) and it is free (with 2 free aircrafts) and the A-10A (realistic flight model but simplified avionic) and the A-10C (realistic flight model and simulated cockpit with all buttons clickable and full avionic simulation) are both available as DLC, it also feature many other WW2 aircrafts and "modern" jet fighters and some helicopters, but don't expect aircrafts past 4th gen though as their data are unavailable legally for the public and can't be reproduced.
It is one of the best fighter aircraft, and I want it to remain operational for many decades, like the others.
Solid airframe, redundant systems and ability to kick ass on the ground. Not sure as the decades go by if the maintenance costs are going up more than other aircraft but it looks like the brass want something shiny, new and real expensive to play with. Hopefully if they procure something else it won't be everything to everyone on paper but not good at much in reality plus overly expensive and over budget as so many military vehicles are today.

I served in the US army for 11 yrs (2000-2011) with 2 tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. The A-10 is a awesome aircraft and is great at CAS in low intensity wars or in areas were there is no real anti air defense or enemy aircraft. Even though the A-10 is extremely well protected and armored, it wouldn't last long in against any real integraded air defense or enemy fighters. Also most don't realize but in both Afghanistan and Iraq, the it was the F-16 and other strike fighters that did more CAS missions than the A-10. The people that say the F-35 can't do CAS are just idiots because I can tell you right now that as a soldier that has been on the ground I don't care if it's F-35 dropping a laser guided bome from 30,000 ft on the enemy or an A-10 doing a straffing run at 500ft, as long as it gets the job done!
What are your thoughts on the use of prop planes like the A-29 Super Tucano for CAS/COIN roles? Seems to me they have quite a few advantages. Also, the psychological impact of a CAS vehicle that sticks around cannot be understated, enemies will keep their heads down if there is an A-10 or AC-130 overhead, but strike fighters can't stick around in the same way.
@@colinhobbs7265 However in even medium threat enviroments aircraft like the AC-130 or A-10 can't loiter before every single enemy with AA weaponry starts taking pot shots

Very Cool I subbed to you. Great site
the A-10 should be transferred to the army and then the army can for itself decide whether they need it and how to fund it.
The army has the Apache E which is networked into the system and also has the ability to control drones. It also has more sensors than the F-35. In 2007, less than 200 Apaches claimed just over 70% of the kills in Iraq even though there were over 140,000 troopers there plus all the ground and air vehicles. That's according to Popular Mechanics. The Apache D and E can also find and kill tanks faster using their radars, something the A-10 doesn't have.
@@orlock20 my argument was not at all based on technical merits, rather that if the army finances the A-10, they can themselves prioritise the expenses associated with operating it.
@@adamcrookedsmile What argument? US Congress already turned down that option long ago remember how they said ... no?
What is 'the army'? Cos if the US Army starts deciding for itself it is called a coup? Kinda why the U.S Constitution is very clear on the US military not deciding stuff for themselves?
And we already know for a fact the A-10 will be replaced by a crop duster with a propellor? The Air Tractor AT-802 under the US AF FX program with the AT-802U prototype at Paris Air Show already revealed and combat missions flown?
Regardless of what you think should be? It is simply not so. Not saying US Congress has all it's marbles in order but that is how things are.
@@orlock20 I would never say the Apache is a bad machine. It has its uses. But I believe that in a hot environment a helicopter is always going to be more vulnerable. Two wings bolted to your fuselage will take a lot more damage. I don't know what the formula is - hits to airframe survivability ratio? - but you need to factor in the systems redundancy the A-10 has, plus its already formidable armour plating (I admit I don't know what Apaches have). Hogs have come home with holes in their wings, jagged dents in the leading edge (one snagged a power cable!) and shot-out hydraulics. I just wouldn't want to take hits in a helicopter, or snag power cables. Use the fast jets to get air superiority, Hogs to get down and dirty and Apaches to mop up afterwards and provide extra eyeballs. The A-10s can get radar upgrades. I'm just biased!
@@travelbugse2829 A hot area is limited when the Apache can attack targets miles away without a direct line of sight. All surface to air weapons are line of sight weapons so the Apache has the advantage.

Further accentuated by the wings occluding the engine intake with respect to the ground.

If exists because I've already watched it.
Sadly, I have no idea where or how to find it.
And engine exhaust hidden by the horizontal stab.
Also the shape of the tail and engine placement is such that it reduces the IR signature, so a quick power down of the engines and shooting a few flares takes care of a lot of the short range heat seeking threats.
Only things wrong with the A10... not enough of them.. and lack of appreciation of what a fine machine this is

Politics and money will ALWAYS get in the way of good equipment and common sense.
When they decided that the F14 was finished they deliberatly scrapped all remaining planes because "We didn't want the Iranians getting the spare parts."
Now I ask you, if America can't put some decent GUARDS on old airplanes, WHO the hell can? It had very little to do with the Iranians and a hell of a lot to do with manufacturers pushing for their NEW PRODUCTS at increasingly ridiculous cost to the taxpayer.

There is an National Guard air base by where I grew up, and the A10 was stationed there for many years. Only since 9/11, were they moved out of there and replaced with F15's. I used to love the sound of these as they took off and landed almost right over my house.
I just commissioned into the USAF and will be headed to pilot training in 8 months. I want to fly this beautiful bird sooooooo bad... can’t wait to start!!!
Great plane, thank you.
You bet!
Kid: Mom, i joined the military
Mom: WHAT DID YOU DO??? ITS SO DANGE...
Kid: As an A-10 warhog pilot
mom: oh, ok! in that case have fun sweety! I'll keep your dinner hot!
I seen reports that the A10 design came out in the 1960's! With numerous builds which were used for troop support throughout all war's or police actions, such as Vietnam! That would make them closer to 60years!
😱The A10 is an truly awesome peace of enginering unbelivable i almost got tears of joy
my first observation of an A10 was in 1978 during an FTX at Ft Hood. Amazing to watch 2 of them circle my foxhole. I'd never seen an A10 before. so it was rather funny when my 1SG got pissed at me for allowing an enemy soldier to breach the perimeter. my answer was to him was "but Top, I was too busy watching them Hogs fly over me.."
Could you cover the SR 71 Blackbird?
Mustard already made a video about that: czcams.com/video/th-RoJBP0Vs/video.html
@@nationalistcanuck7800 Can you post the official sources with the evidence to these claims?
@@MrFlatage You mean the American military site I visited? 😎
@@nationalistcanuck7800 Nope didn't mean that.
I said post the official sources.
Nowhere in my comment does it mention American military site you visited.
So I will just consider you a liar. I am guessing your just another lying American?
@@MrFlatage I'm Canadian, you fucking moron. The avatar didn't give you a fucking hint? I have known these FACTS since the 1980s, when the Soviets were intercepting Blackbirds on a monthly basis. 4 missiles were fired at them from both Foxbats and Foxhounds, causing the Blackbirds to hightail it out of there. After the closest call by a Foxhound, the Blackbird was removed from recon duties anywhere near Soviet airspace. The Americans returned to using their spy satellites, quite useless since the Soviets knew their orbits precisely and hid from them. Are you really this stupid? The Soviets had a Minister of Propaganda forced the Americans to sign an ABM treaty after he convinced them they had superior ABMs when in fact they had none. He was the fucking Minister of Propaganda, for fuck sakes and he tricked the stupid Americans. 😎
There is a static display at Fort Hood, Texas......you can walk up and touch it
