Thank you! You're the first person actually encouraging to make manga, not only that, but to fulfill your dreams. I have always been a very naive person, having the biggest dreams, but these years I have kind of lost that, and I didn't really know why. But I have thought about it, and it's me listening to all these people (parents, "experts", friends etc.) that drags me down to earth, telling me to forget about it, that it's impossible etc. I once (sounds like I'm really old now, but I'm actually only 21) drew a lot of manga pictures, and made my own story. But I never really got anywhere, but after this vid, I am determined to get back on track to fulfill my dream.

anime is 'frowned upon' in my college level Art class. I find that so sad because anime IS a type of art. i'm sick of seeing traditional still life art. yes i like drawing animals but dammit i love drawing anime.
i wish we would draw still life the only thing my school does is abstract ;c

Anime should be more welcomed in America and the schools there, I mean I live in England, anime is sort of neutral here. Not too common but I still think that America should welcome anime in open arms.

annamerrikat to be honest drawing life has helped me in drawing manga. you learn anatomy, to draw in different poses, angles and perspectives. you can always cartoonize/manga-ize(?) your drawings and find your own style
HAHAHAHA when I read manga on my iPad I screenshot the hell out of it. That way I have a TON of references.

I have a friend that was always telling me how I shouldn't draw from reference all that time, he would gloat and tell me he drew from his mind. I'm glad he told me about this because I was just coping from books. He later told me that none of my manga characters looked like manga. Just about a month ago in school, I saw him drawing a manga character from his ''mind''. At this point I had learned about using reference correctly and was even drawing realism pretty well. Anyway, so I walked up to him and said: '' Nice drawing, but your arm is wrong''. He told me: ''It's my arm''. I explained to him that the anatomy of the arm was wrong. He told me: I don't care It's my arm. I was really pissed off I just walked away and continued drawing a study of the human figure. *Soon I'm gonna surpass him and be able to draw anything from my mind.*

berniemacsgreatesthi Actualy she never say's that my drawing is good, she say stuff like: 'hmm' or 'it looks wierd' or the most annoying 'it looks like him/her from this anime' while this drawing is from my fantasy and is my original character!! I hate it! While I always say to her that the drawing looks good (sometimes it looks wierd but I dont want to hurt her) I don't know what to do.... But yeah she must understand that not everyone has the same artstyle like her. And to tell the truth I draw beter the human bodies than her ( she always draw faces), I'm not telling that I am the best but thats the truth and she knows that but she never say something good for me.

This was the most helpful video I've ever watched on this topic. I'm an American 14 year old girl and my dream is to become a manga artist, but am always discouraged by a lot of things mentioned in your video. It's always just been nothing more than a daydream or whatever, but you make it seem so possible and real. I think I'll be able to get a lot better and further from watching this. I've been trying to figure this whole thing out for so long!! Thank you!!

Thanks for the advice I want to make at least on manga series in my life and I will do these things. Some of them I have been doing actually every day like drawing every day and though out the years I have gotten so much better XD. My favorite things to do in art is re draw things that is so fun because I get to see my improvement.

But thanks to you I think I can take it! Criticism has been the one thing that stops me from making my manga! This is probably the most inspiring video ive ever seen from an artist's perspective. Ive never thought fully of creating my own manga, i always thought i couldnt, but this really reminded me (after a 2 year hiatus) just how much i love to create. Its given me the drive to go and practice every single day again, drawing my own characters, creating new random ones, and making stories. From one artist to another, thank you, and good luck.
You are my hero. Idk if I even get to be one but I will try and do my best. I personally think I am okay at drawing and I've recently done my own art and I'm not proud of it THOUGH I won't give up! Im gonna draw a manga for my friend and sure im a good drawer but its not something I like to do a lot. Drawing is probably more like a hobby for me so any tips for a person who does this for a hobby but wants to take it seriously at the same time?

While I may not be a manga author or anything, but I am working on a series of books. The art that I do for it is in the manga/anime style. It will be awesome to one day publish my books, and see my art on the covers! Probably that same feeling you were talking about in regards to a manga being made into anime. It's all about the passion for creation, creating your own world and drawing it out. To me at least! If one doesn't have the passion, one can hardly sit at their desk/work space for hours to draw/color/evolve their art/writing styles. I think it was this video actually that helped get me out of one of my 'funks' in drawing/writing a couple years back. Glad I found this again!

Anime was jut a silly hobby my cousins did. well one day my cousin Grim sat me down and taught me how to draw. since that day i was hooked, her silly hobby became my love and passion, and to this day...I am working on getting my manga/ art work published.It stopped for a while when i lost hope my work was ever going to be seen yet.i had strangers read my stuff and they were really happy with my work. I used more than 1000 sheets of paper drawing c: I never can really learn other peoples anatomy so I made my own... but I need to learn my own style of hands and Thank you very much... OMG thank you, this is just what I needed. I just needed a bit of advice and some encouragement and this helped sooo much.
Its soo true though that coming up with a story is the hardest part. I used to work on my own manga called 'Crucifixion' and I had to redo the introduction of the manga 4 times! And still it isn't really that good. I would show my classmate otaku to get some feedback. And they would say the art style is great and everything, but its sooo cliche!!
Right now I'm working with a friend on 2 mangas called 'DR0N3' and 'Balmung', the story is going to be great.

absolutely inspiring.. this really helped with the issues i was having with a story and not being good enough to be a manga artist and i eventually stopped drawing for about 6 months because i was told that i would be starving and unknown.. i recently got the conviction to continue to do what i love and right after a perspective tut i was watching i saw this :3 and now i am an unstoppable force!

I can relate. I had an Art teacher that would critique my drawings because it was about Anime. I did not care because Anime was the only I love the most. A lot of people these days like portraits but I like to show people that Anime is art. Everyone has their own style, just like I do. Thank you for this video!
I nearly cried watching this, I'm aspiring to be a manga artist and this changed my view on nearly EVERYTHING. When you pointed out the flaws most artist's do I realized I do those, and now I have to break out of those habits. i honestly don't have what it takes, i have come to that realization ages ago, its not that im a terrible artist, its more than likely because i cannot devote that much time to one thing, ive got a few talents and skills that i focus on all at once so i hone them all. But you have definitely inspired me to knuckle down and better my art as i have been on a creative slump for a while, thanks alot

I had a lot of trouble with my teachers who didn't want me to draw manga at first too.
But now I know they are right. I've tried a hundred different styles since I began drawing manga, and it's really difficult, but I learn a lot from it. Really, every single style has something you can learn from, and even just drawing something boring like a closet or a street, you learn more from it than you could ever do with just drawing manga, and you can use all that experience to make your manga skills even better. So really, I'm very grateful to my teachers for opening my world, because I now even enjoy drawing realistically now and then, and it's very iinteresting to draw the same thing in different styles. :)
