Chris Stuckmann reviews The Exorcist III, starring George C. Scott, Ed Flanders, Brad Dourif, Jason Miller, Nicol Williamson, Scott Wilson, Nancy Fish. Directed by William Peter Blatty.
One of the reasons that jump scare is so great is because we JUST SAW HER check that room. That's literally the LAST place we would expect a killer to burst out from.
Not only that if you study the scene which I did many times.. it's so perfect in building a safe feeling. It even shows the security guard in the hallway lending a sense of protection, at least until he sneakily walks away without you even noticing, JUST as the killer comes out of the room you thought was already cleared and that loud chord plays and SHATTERS the long silence of the scene. It was just so meticulously designed to scare the crap out of everyone in the theater!
The Exoricst III is a shining example of how important artists are. It wasn’t a film created in a board room, it was shareholders crafting the most approachable movie they can to bring in crowds - even with the studio interference, Blatty still made his film. He made what he was passionate about, and took interference as more of a challenge to overcome rather than an accessory to drag down his vision. It’s remarkable.
But it's also important to remember that some decisions by the studio made the movie better. It was the studio who Demanded that Jason Miller be in the movie and have the killer switch between actors. It was also the studio who wanted Dourifs performance to be more
@@srdjan455 I thought they just wanted Miller in those scenes, and Blatty compromised, with it going back and forth, between Dourif and Miller. Though, it’s been awhile since I read about it, so I’m likely misremembering.
Absolutely criminally underrated. And even in the scenes where Scott is just CHEWING every bit of the screen up - he’s stellar. Glad Blatty fought for his vision. Cant believe it’s year 11, Chris!
Came here to say this. He it mesmerisingly astonishing. His jumps from quiet descriptions of his actions to maniacal shouting still scares the bejesus out of me.
One of my most favorite scenes in Legion: Exorcist III is the dream scene where Kinderman is dreaming that he is in what appears to be Heaven’s train station. He’s surrounded by angels and people who have passed and walks by the murdered boy who’s body he found in an earlier scene. It’s such a cool and serene moment but then my heart drops when he encounters his priest friend and he says to him, “I wonder if we’re having the same dream.” And his priest friend replies, “Oh I’m not dreaming this.”
I always loved the chemistry between George C. Scott and Ed Flanders. The way they bust each other's chops and their general conversations really sell the friendship. It makes the thing that happens to Father Dyer that much more impactful. I could watch an entire movie of those two just talking lol.
I'm happy to see someone announce it loud and proud. I've always felt the relationship between these two characters is a master class in acting and chemistry. It's shocking their performances were not more publicly heralded when the movie was released. They are the foundation of this.
😱 The Exorcist III (or Legion, as it should be called) is a masterpiece. Completely underrated gem of the genre. Terrifying still to this day. I have seen a lot of horror movies and am hardened in a way, but even only thinking about some of the scenes in this movie makes my blood freeze.
I avoided this film for years because of Exorcist II. It's now one of my favorite horror films. Big props to Blatty and co for taking the studio notes and actually integrating them into the Legion story in a very satisfying way. Loved it! Thanks Chris!
That jump scare is THE greatest jump scare. Exorcist 3 is also the second most underrated sequel (Psycho 3 being just barely above it). Great pick Chris and also a wonderful discussion about the film as always.
Over the years, since Exorcist III was released , I've watched it probably half a dozen times. It never ceases to scare me and engage me with the story line and underlying mystery about it. The well scripted characters and great cast, superb acting, layers of back stories and present scenarios...awesome film. Can't say enough to praise it. Spot on, articulate review, Chris.
Ya its even the Scariest part of the Netflix Dahmer series.. It was seriously a favorite film of Jeffery Dahmer. Imagine going into Dahmer's apartment and watching this Creepy AF movie, only to have this Jeffery wimp kill you in some pathetic sneaky fashion. Which is what he did to all his victims.
One of my favorite horror films period. It's so cold and brutally harsh without showing much, George C. Scott gives one of my all time favorite performances in any movie. It reminds me a lot of Halloween in the sense that it's a film that tackles the idea of pure evil, but in a much more visceral and lived-in way by showing it through the eyes of a character like Kinderman who has witnessed so much evil in his life from his time as a police officer. Great breakdown of the jump scare too, I think a big part of why it works is also because it isn't instantaneous, you get just long enough to take it all in. It's just enough for you to get genuinely startled by the sudden camera move which forces you to witness the horror in full, coupled with the music which isn't your abrupt jump scare sound you get today, instead building to what sounds like a wailing banshee, and the time right before it is spent showing that door getting locked, seeing that nightmarish thing burst out is the last thing you expect.
I love this movie. I actually just watched it again last night. Brad Dourif is absolutely amazing and his manic to calm changes, as he talks to the camera, come across so effortlessly. It's one of the best scenes in Horror.
This movie is extremely underrated. Nobody talks about it because of it's name because they were forced to call it Exorcist 3. It should have been called Legion. Also it's not a horror movie, it's a psychological thriller, just like The Exorcist (1973).
This is one of my favorite horror films. I think it's partly due to the relationships in the film, especially the friendship between Kinderman (great name btw) and Father Dyer. The characters are so real! I love the crazy dream sequence and all the subtle scares that make you say, "Wait! What was that?!" Brad Dourif was amazing and now I will have to rewatch the X Files episode you mentioned. I look forward to your annual Halloween specials Chris! 🖤
IMO if the movie had gone more in Kinderman and Dyer's friendship, and had that been most of the movie, I think it would have been a much better movie...in the end, I just didn't like it. It felt very late 80s in a bad way. The original feels timeless, whereas this lacks the drama of the first one.
This is the only horror movie to ever make my skin crawl, or get any kind of visceral reaction like that. The scene when the crucifix has fallen to the floor and begins bleeding from its eyes. The camera angle, all the tension leading up to that point, it just all comes together for me. I haven't seen the movie for probably 20+ years but that is seared into my brain, forever. Such a great film!
Chris, I am going through some big shake-ups right now; and the amount of joy & comfort that Halloween special intro brought me was unreal. The rest of the video was fantastic, too. Thank you for being here!
I love the shot zoomed into his mouth as he describes the unspeakable horror he did to his victim. It's such refined fear, just pure terror. It's what horror movies are all about.
When someone mentions this movie I automatically think of the nurse scene. It's very memorable. Also, thank you for the shout out to The Changeling. It's one of my favorite horror movies that I re-watch from time to time.
I remember seeing this in the theater when it came out. I've never been in a theater where the tension and gasps were more intense. Silence of the Lambs came close about six months later. Like The Exorcist, this movie delivers on a very visceral level. One of my favorite thrillers of all time.
THANK YOU for reviewing this movie!!! It has been one of my favs for years now and no one talks about how amazing the acting and the story is. I wish George C Scott had done more horror movies. He is absolutely incredible in both this movie and the Changeling. Look forward to what else you have planned for this Halloween speclial!!
Even though The Exorcist is one of the greatest horror film of all time, I personally think The Exorcist III has one of the best jumpscares of all time! Looking forward to the rest of the Halloween Specials!
One of the most unsettling films I’ve seen. The creeping sense of dread throughout is insane. Fantastic editing and sound design and that static hospital hall scene is genius and legendary.
I saw it in the cinema when I was 15, and there were certain moments that have stayed with me in the 30+ years since. I watched it for the second time just two years ago, and it really held up. George C. Scott is magnificent in it.
So glad to see you review this movie. Exorcist III is one of my favorite horror movies. It really is an underappreciated film. You just rarely see this caliber of acting in a horror movie. George C Scott and Brad Dourif are really good in this. It is linked to the first film in a clever way but is a very different style of movie. You watch as Kinderman and his fellow officers investigate these murders which increasingly defy explanation. And the scenes between Scott and Dourif in the holding cell are amazing.
A few years ago, I started a Halloween tradition of watching a horror film I’ve never seen before on the big night. In 2022, I chose The Exorcist III. It took three nights before I could sleep soundly. Chris nailed the feeing it left me with perfectly. I was literally afraid to walk around in my house alone largely due to its big scare. Truly the best jump scare of all time and masterfully edited.
October is a special time of year, and watching your halloween videos just make it even more special, gets me into that halloween spirit. Just love the decorations, the horror and mystery, the beautiful colors of the leaves outside, probably my favourite time of the year.
'The Exorcist III' is fantastic and I like how it was handled as a murder investigation or whodunit kind of movie as well as having its disturbing supernatural imagery and effects and George C. Scott was at the top of his game. What an incredible actor he was.
The thing that sticks out so much about this movie is how cold and clinical it feels, yet you have this Priest and Detective with their wonderfully charming relationship mulling over the sickening actions they endure through their work. There's so much to love in the setups and crazy oddities that William Peter Blatty creates such as the Jesus figure opening it's eyes in the intro. For being only his second film, there's an extraordinary amount of care and detail which is only heightened by the fantastic characters. One of my all time favorite horrors.
what a wonderful tradition of this channel Chris, was so looking forward to this, hopefully you'll make a lot videos with the people who talked during last couple of halloweens, thanks so much!
Love this! I firmly believe that this is INCREDIBLY under-rated. I saw this in he theater because of my love for the first movie, and I will say that "the scene" went over so well. Thank you for bringing this to light for more people to discover
I found this movie after the RLM Re:view where they praised it, and I bought the Blu-ray the next day. I like it more than the original, the writing and acting are top notch and the directing is surprisingly great. Always love George C Scott, and Brad Dourif was apparently born to play demon-possessed serial killers (he has another great portrayal in one of the best X-Files episodes). It hits extra hard for those of us with previous or current endeavors in spiritual faith.
Awesome review as always, and glad you mentioned Changeling. It’s one of my favorite horror movies ever made and grossly underrated. I’d love to hear you talk more about it.
Great review Chris. Ex_III is kind of a mistery in horror because it truly is a great film, but so underrated and many people don't know about it! It's genuinely scary stuff and you are so right when you say that it stays with you, it really does.I know of people that were unable to finish it, people that got up and turn the lights on, etc. Thank you for doing this review so that more people will get to know about this gem that flies under the radar.
My favorite of the Exorcist films!! Brad Dourif is absolutely horrifying in this, and to be honest - my favorite performance of his. Considering that this was Blatty’s film. I’ve always felt this was a more meditative film. Really focusing on the relationship between Kinderman and father Pryor. Love to this review!
I paused this about a minute in to your review - restarted my peacock subscription and watched it. Absolutely loved it. George C Scott’s performance was unbelievable. Blatty did a great job keeping the tension going like the original. Thanks for the recommend!
„More than we bargained for“ will always be a quote from some holiday special for me, thanks to you. I will always miss a certain category of your channels reviews. Love your shirt, even though, it was never on tv here in Germany. I just know about the show from you.
I literally watched this for the first time three days ago and wow, talk about underrated. This clearly one of the greatest horror movies ever- though I could easily have just watched a couple of hours of Scott and Flanders bantering.
Chris, I am screening my version of The Exorcist "trilogy" this weekend (Dominion, Exorcist: Version You've Never Seen, III). So excited to see you do a review of this today!
SO glad you finally covered this incredible flick doubly so that you agree and elaborate on my own opinions so eloquently, excellent review of the greatest horror movie of all time
I enjoyed this Movie! The Director's Cut, available on Blu Ray, is even better, as it shows Brad Dourif claiming to be the recently executed Gemini Killer. It shows 17 minutes of cut alternative footage. I highly recommend it.
It's amazing how terrifying this movie is, yet it contains virtually no gore. It achieves all of its scares through implication, tension, and amazing delivery.
Hadn’t watched it until last night when I saw you were reviewing it…I had heard it wasn’t great but wow I was so impressed! So well written, filmed, and acted.
I literally just decided to watch this for the first time last night and Brad Dourif is so incredible in this movie I can’t believe how more people don’t praise this film
Saw this in the theater back then and it got under my skin. The sound design and creeping dread...and the nurse's station. I felt unsafe in my chair. Lol. 😱
‘Legion’, as I like to refer to it, is one of my favourite horrors of all time. It’s not perfect but it’s uncanny nature is what makes it so great. I remember watching it for the first time alone at night with headphones and that opening monologue sent chills down my spine. Another notable scene (among many) is when the camera zooms out to reveal the Gemini killer’s change in appearance as he screams was one of the most shocking things I’ve ever witnessed in film.
Thanks Chris!! This film is great and I never would have watched it if u didnt do this review!! The small conversations, the humor, the camera, and honestley the terror, this is a master class in filmmaking, again thanks man
its worse than that, theres 5. (6 if you count the unofficial director's cut of The Exorcist III). and the people who wrote and directed the recent Halloween trilogy are working on an Exorcist trilogy now (which i am not happy about at all)
It is more than that: 1-The Exorcist 2-The Exorcist-the version you have never seen 3-The Exorcist II 4-The Exorcist III 5-Legion/The Exorcist III "directors cut" 6-The Exorcist : the beginning. 7-Dominion : prequel of The Exorcist (the original version of The Beginning) 8-The Exorcist: believer. There is also a TV series sequel and a parody with Linda Blair herself.
Dude, very happy for you reviewing this movie, exorcist III is a favorite of mine. It deserves more attention. Also happy for guessing it right which movie it was.
I'm glad you like it. I saw it in the theatre when I was a bit young, and that classic jump scare stayed with me for years. More recently I've rediscovered it and it's really one of my all time favorite movies. Highly recommended.
I saw this film in the theater on opening night. That jump scare...I never saw a packed house move like that. Afterwards everyone laughed. An unusual communal moment. Blatty's The Ninth Configuration might be too slow for some but it's so good. Just builds and builds. Great cast.
I was fortunate to see if first run in the theaters when it came out and it has been my favorite horror film since then. It does stick with you, and it's just fascinating in so many way. I miss this era of movie making.
The Channeling and Exorcist III are two of my absolute favorite movies. And you're 💯 right about Brad Dourif.. oh my God he is entrancing. One of his best performances.
It's because of this movie that I love the restored ending of The Exorcist with Kinderman and Dyer. My only problem I have with Exorcist III is the narrative that Kinderman and Karras was best friends as the original movie merely points to Kinderman's respect and enjoyment with Karras' reply to him. That aside, the duo of George C. Scott and Ed Flanders is wonderfull.
Great review as always Chris. That nurse/hospital scene still haunts my dreams to this day 😂 P.S. I hope to see the Mrs back this year for a video or two. Y’all are always great together
How nice to see you review this one Chris. I recently watched exorcist 3 after reading some interesting reviews on imdb. I really enjoyed the clever concept of how they managed where the majority of the movie takes place. I wish we get some more Horror movies along these lines.
Just saw the movie like 2 hours ago and damn was a great movie. Brad douriff gives in my mind one of my favorite performances of all time. I was glued to the screen every time they showed his face. Also this movie use of scares is truly amazing with how W.P.B sets them up. It’s brillant. Considering it was his 2nd movie, he already felt like a seasoned pro and a master of his craft. George c Scott truly is both hilarious when he need to be and grounded when he needs to. Also there is a spaceballs reference in the movie which is hilarious. As for negatives, the exorcism scene does feel tacked on but is still good on its own right. HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended for any horror lover to watch this movie. It’s one of the greats.
I saw this with my sister at the movies when this was released, and even though I was a teenager at the time, I had difficulty sleeping for a few days. I was truly shook by this movie.
I have only ever acknowledged one sequel to the original legendary Exorcist and this is that movie. But in fairness? It is it's own movie entirely and couldve easily stood alone as Legion. Its a phenomenal film, very unsettling, amazing acting and contains both the greatest jump scare ever crafted and Brad Dourif's masterwork.
I’m glad to see Stuckmann doing some more reviews. I don’t necessarily care that he’s not ranking them with a letter grade but his opinions and insights are always well presented and I enjoy the videos.
Vindicated!!! I saw this at the theater when it was released and LOVED it! It freaked the heck out of me but it is a fabulous movie and it has held up over the years. THANK YOU!!
Can't wait to see this now. George C Scott has always been one of my favorite actors. His Patton performance is one of the all time greatest. Sad to hear how the studios helped kill a promising director's career before it really got started.
YES I've been waiting for a review on this. One of my favorite horror films. Takes the theological aspects of the first and blends them with a detective story. Despite all the trouble it's had through production it's still a wonderful piece of art
It's terrific that you've spoken in favour of this underappreciated movie, Chris. UK film critic Mark Kermode has been a passionate advocate of The Exorcist 3 - both versions - for many years. And also, The Ninth Configuration. Lastly, I am embarking on a three-year BA (Hons) degree in English Literature and Creative Writing tomorrow. There's an early module called 'Romantic Origins and Gothic Afterlives'. It seems like perfect timing, with Halloween around the corner and all. Well, excuse me while I go and watch Guillermo del Toro's Cronos. I am trying to remember if you have reviewed it, but if you still need to, might you soon?
Legend has it that by the time they got around to shooting Jason Miller's scenes he was too terribly alcoholic to remember his lines, much less even show up on set which turned out to be a blessing in disguise since everything had to be improvised around his absence and Brad Dourif's performance was edited into the film well enough to compliment the actual tone of the story visually and emotionally - it is seamlessly shot in a way that intends to share Kinderman's confusion with the audience and nails it, even though we're _not_ supposed to see the Gemini killer, only Karris onscreen. Whether dubbing Dourif's lines over Miller's acting would've worked we'll never know.
Ahhh! So happy that October is finally here! And can’t wait for more videos for this year’s Halloween special! Great review, Chris! Love Exorcist 3 a lot!
Seriously, I genuinely look forward to this every Halloween season. That VHS intro is easily one of my favorite things for the month.
I agree!
Same 😊
Imagine if Stuckmann got to write and direct a segment for the new VHS anthology
Completely agree

Honestly one of the best horror movies ever Imo. Criminally underrated.
Not underrated, but underrecognized.
Seriously great acting
I rewatched this last week and it's still so good...in fact I appreciate it even more...Brad Dourif is amazing in this
Saw this on Sunday
No. This movie is awful. What.
One of the reasons that jump scare is so great is because we JUST SAW HER check that room. That's literally the LAST place we would expect a killer to burst out from.
The killer climbed the ceilings to get around I believe
It's a brilliant 3 seconds of cinema.
I thought the killer charged down the hall, not out of that room.
When I saw the scene the first time as a young teen I thought the killer was a headless statue chasing after her with those big-ass shears.
It also breaks the 3rd movie is always bad myth.
Yeah Blatty was really talented his The Ninth Configuration was also pretty unique and good, not a thing would see in a by-committee product.
Exorcist 3 is one of my all-time favorite films! One of the best ever!
But it's also important to remember that some decisions by the studio made the movie better. It was the studio who Demanded that Jason Miller be in the movie and have the killer switch between actors. It was also the studio who wanted Dourifs performance to be more

Classic film. George C. Scott was such a beast of an actor.
Brad dourif's performance in this is arguably the best performance in any horror movie ever.
Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon in Rosemary's Baby. Ellen Burstyn in The Exorcist and Sissy Spacek in Carrie are also up there.
Came here to say this. He it mesmerisingly astonishing. His jumps from quiet descriptions of his actions to maniacal shouting still scares the bejesus out of me.
Agreed
Is his voice altered in some way or was that him naturally acting?
Definitely not.

Their interactions definitely contribute to the emotional impact - the pain and dread - of later events in the movie.

Yes. The confessional scene in the beginning alone always scares the sh.t out of me.
It was great, but the ending kind of throws the whole movie off, it doesn't fit.

I had zero expectations when I watched this but damn was it a good time!
I love Exorcist III, the performance from Brad Dourif is amazing.
"I feel it inside of me when i watch it" ayyyooo pause
I'm so glad you talked about this masterpiece. It's so well done and honestly I kinda prefer the revised version to the original Legion edit.
Your Halloween special series is one of my most looked forward to videos every single year!
Brad Dourif in this film is a genuinely terrifying presence.
I actually prefer the theatrical release but nevertheless it's a totally underated movie and Brad Dourif gives an Oscar worthy performance.
It's amazing how terrifying this movie is, yet it contains virtually no gore. It achieves all of its scares through implication, tension, and amazing delivery.
Well said. True psychological horror.
So happy to see you cover this one! It's right up there with the original in my eyes.
The small conversations, the humor, the camera, and honestley the terror, this is a master class in filmmaking, again thanks man
Best Exorcist movie ever.
Thank you. I've been waiting for this review. This was actually a good movie. Decent acting.
Fun fact this was Jeffrey Dahmer's favourite film.
I like how during the jump scare moment in this review YT or Chris has placed an advert. Poetic.
Oh man thank you so much for doing this one, Chris. I watched it recently and it just got in my head and I can't stop watching.
Definitely an underrated sequel!
gosh i didnt even know there were 3 😭😭
its worse than that, theres 5. (6 if you count the unofficial director's cut of The Exorcist III). and the people who wrote and directed the recent Halloween trilogy are working on an Exorcist trilogy now (which i am not happy about at all)
It is more than that:
1-The Exorcist
2-The Exorcist-the version you have never seen
3-The Exorcist II
4-The Exorcist III
5-Legion/The Exorcist III "directors cut"
6-The Exorcist : the beginning.
7-Dominion : prequel of The Exorcist (the original version of The Beginning)
8-The Exorcist: believer.
There is also a TV series sequel and a parody with Linda Blair herself.
It's about time you do this review! One of my personal favorite movies!!! and it scared the hell out of me as a youngster!
Dude, very happy for you reviewing this movie, exorcist III is a favorite of mine. It deserves more attention. Also happy for guessing it right which movie it was.
Jeffrey Dahmers favourite movie.
And now it’s mine too😈
I could definitely see him possessing someone just like Kara’s was possessed by the serial killer
So happy your reviewing this one. It's one of my all time favorite horror films and probably my favorite horror sequel of all time
I'm glad you like it.
Geez, that trailer really just shows the entire climax of the film, huh?
Love hearing you talk about this one! Happy October!
Great review as always Chris. That nurse/hospital scene still haunts my dreams to this day 😂
That time of the year is finally here. Thanks Chris 😀
Love Exoricst III! It proves how William Peter Blatty's writing is the soul of the Exorcist.
Your Halloween specials and Hilariocity reviews are the best!
“Patrick Ewing and Fabio in cameos”
You had my curiosity, but now you’ve got my attention 😂 solid video Chris 👍
It has begun. Thank you for doing this every year.
Between The Exorcist III and Jacob's Ladder, 1990 was such a great year for slow burn horror movies that stick with you after you watch.
I’m so glad you chose this one. Just watched it again the other night. So underrated. Terrifying and humorous and the dialogue is wonderful.
Brad Dourif is such a wonderful actor. I absolutely LOVE him as Doc Cochran in Deadwood.
