One of my favorite movies of all time. I know its not perfect, I know it's a bit cheesy at times, but I do genuinely enjoy what they were able to create with this film.
Absolutely agree. Was obsessed with the viral marketing campaign and overall effectiveness of the film itself. I used to talk about it at length with family and friends. Also, had a huge Cloverfield poster back in my college dorm room. ❤️
It's amazing that Cloverfield, released more than 15 years ago, still holds up as one of the best and scariest found footage movies ever! The CGI holds up extremely well too!
The scene where Lizzy Caplan’s character dies, essentially exploding with bloody vomit behind the quarantine tent, genuinely terrified me as an 11 year old. The camera work in this movie is so S tier
This moment is so fucking upsetting. It’s not over the top gore but that really did stick with me for years, like imagining being either her or her friends in that scene is so scary.
Yes. I remember seeing Transformers and literally everyone in the theater were talking to each other asking "what was that?" Like Chris said, some of the best marketing ever done in movies.
It really does and man I hate saying it cuz it's so cliche but damn things just ain't what they used to be and I count myself lucky to have been born in 85, pretty much the penultimate generation to experience Halloween to the fullest cuz damn man it's sad how Night has fallen the last few years in particular and I barely see any trick or treaters...shit makes me want to throw on my Star Trek suit and go out my damn Self and hopefully others will follow..people still decorate and whatnot but much like Christmas and also to a lesser extent 4th of July is it just me or does it seem to be fading?...trust me I hope I'm wrong

It's a great way to keep things safe and not bother the folks who don't want visitors. Maybe you could talk to your NA or whatever, and try to spearhead something like that 🤷♂️
I remember watching this movie earlier this year. And I gotta say: this is definitely one of the best found footage movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a movie that genuinely made me feel scared. The monster is fascinating. It’s not some monster that’s just destroying stuff, it’s a scared baby trying to find it’s parent. That’s a very interesting take on a Kaiju. Of course, with it being found footage, you don’t get to see the monster that often, but when you do, especially the part where we see it up close and clear, it’s fricking terrifying! And the post credit scene where if you play it backwards, the “it’s still alive” line, is chilling. Great movie. And with a supposed actual sequel being Announced, that’d be very interesting to see
Truthfully, there’s not much story to tell 🤷🏾♂️ we know the monster was blipped onto Earth due to a particle accelerator accident in another universe and it died during the bombing.. that “Cloverfield Paradox” movie kind of ruined everything with delivering too many answers.
One idea would be to see the same story from another angle. That's what I wanted Cloverfield Lane to be... unfortunately, although a very good movie by itself, it didn't meet my expectations
The movie closely reflects the events of 9/11, showing people covered in dust and set in New York with the attack occurring at the city center. It effectively portrays the fear and confusion experienced by people during the unfolding events. The only available footage is through news and handheld cameras. Additionally, upon watching this movie after seeing 9/11 footage, clear influences become apparent. 'Cloverfield' is a film that strongly resonates with the fears and anxieties stemming from 9/11, much like how 'Gojira' was influenced by nuclear fears in Japan.
Arguably it’s the best American Kaiju film and this is why. The best Kaiju films are metaphors for fears from real attacks and dangers. Nice observation about 9.11!
This is why it's my favorite kaiju movie, I was (still am), obsessed with 9/11 and both War of the Worlds and Cloverfield were the first (and IMO still best) examples of how that massive tragedy influenced our lives since
I’m kind of shocked that Chris went into as much detail as he did about underrated elements of this film and not once mentioned the love story and the underlying message of letting those you love know how you feel, because in the end, that’s all that ever truly matters.
Matt Reeves directed his ass off with this film. This film reminds me why Matt Reeves is one of the most important voices in the genre filmmaking industry. So blessed to have him helm Batman for the next decade.
I think Matt Reeves is getting a sequel and then that's it. Then the new DC universe will start with James Gunn. But maybe they will let Matt Reeves do a third movie. I hope they do.
Yea hell of a comeback after being banished to tv for a decade for The Pallbearer..he should be on a list of greatest comebacks..JJ is entering Year 5 of his Banishment for Episode IX(star wars in name only) let's hope he'll make as Triumphant a comeback in 2030
The ARG for this film was unparalleled. And fleshed out so much of the backstory - whether it was stuff about the Tagruato corporation, Slusho or just the characters themselves. The MySpace profiles for all the characters were added to throughout the build-up to the movie as more things were discovered online. _They even changed Hud's height from 6'1 to 2'6 on release date because he gets bitten in half._
This is one of my favorite found-footage style movies of all time. Watching it in the movie theater as a young teenager was a great experience. I do remember a lot of people complaining about motion sickness back then and me thinking they were being over-dramatic.
Watched it when I was in my 20s. Didnt got sick. Watched it when I was in my early 30s, on tv, got motion sickness. Now, Im 40, watched it on my Ipad. Wonders. I didnt got sick. Strange.
One of my favorite movies of all time. My dad is a huge monster movie fan and he told me out Cloverfield when I was growing up but I wasn’t able to watch it for a while because I was so young. Hearing my dad tell me about the movie, and the time we spent discussing it after I was old enough to see it makes this movie so special for me.
I was an extra for a week of night shoots on this film. A group of us for a minute got really close seeing each other every night on this gig. I got my SAG wavers in this picture. I remember the actor whose the one tasked with holding the camera and blew up after this movie was really casual about it being his first big movie. He was so zen about everything. There was a bit as soilders we did where we reheresed a whole 'oner' where we get deployed into the hot zone, run at the creature, stop, shoot at it, stop, look at it, realize it had no effect, then retreat running our asses off back down the street while screaming. Our group had the comedic beats down to a science, shot it i believe a dozen times. We got the last take in right before the sun was coming up. The spot where the creature was supposed to be was the biggest most giant blue screen I've ever seen in my life. It must've been four stories high. Impressive. It was scary on its own. When the film got released, i went to go see it first showing. Unexpectedly, the film kept giving me motion sickness from all the hand-held camera jerkiness. I had to watch a lot of it looking down. Same Thing happened to me seeing The Blair Witch Project in theatres in '99. So, i kept waiting for our sequence running at the creature. Long story short: it was left on the cutting room floor. A lot of scenes I was in as out of focus solder or medic guy were actually in the movie which were cool seeing scenes I remember shooting and now was seeing how the final result came out. I thought it looked great. It was such chaos shooting at the time that it really could've went either way. A lot of films as extras you are in the holding area waiting for days. This movie we just would stay on set because we were constantly being called back. It was just easier. ODD FUN FACT: That week of shooting, every night we would walk to set, it was on a studio lot, and we had the same backlot walk through really cool old sets, one of them bizarrely being the stored STREETS OF FIRE (1984) set. We of a certain age all knew it instantly too. Random weird note is going from non-union to SAG in the middle of the shoot. We took a lot of meal penalty breaks to work through breaks which was double overtime pay and penalty pay so the biggest checks I ever got as an extra was on this movie. One check paid my rent. The thrill was I went from non union side of food to the SAG truck for dinner and it was like being handed the keys to the kingdom. My extra group kept roasting me saying i forgot the little people and I had gotten too big for them now. I would say, sorry, who are you people, security! But, of course, they immediately started hitting me up to smuggle the good chef prepared meals back into the non union camp for them. One of the A list actors on the call sheet had actually caught me, but did the Monkey don't see, hear or tell panamime gesture to me, which was extremely cool because you didn't want to get kicked off a film set and get a mark against you cause it would get you banned from work at that studio. It will follow you. 2007 was a year long adventure I spent in LA doing strictly that for a living. Cloverfield was one of the good memories from a gig at that time.

I love this movie. It was incredibly scary and proved Matt Reeves was a director to keep my eyes on. That ended up becoming true, as he has gone on to make one incredible film after the other(Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and The Batman are all great, and War for the Planet of the Apes is my favorite film of the last decade). He's now one of my favorite directors. Also, this wasn't Matt Reeves' first film. His first film was The Pallbearer, with David Schwimmer and Gwen Paltrow. It's kinda a romantic comedy made in 1996. It's not great, but shows Reeves had some promise.
Honestly one of my all time favorite movies. So great story, great effects, trippy for someone who knew absolutely nothing about the movie before hand. Thanks for reviewing it. Wish they did an actual sequel but glad it didn't kill this movie.
I remember seeing the commercials for this movie and becoming instantly obsessed! I happened to watch it during a road trip, lying in the backseat of the car with my tiny portable DVD player, in the middle of the night. Even though I watched it on such a tiny screen I was so immersed. I remember just lying there when it ended, feeling this chill all over my body. It was such a special experience and even though the movie is far from perfect, it definitely is one of my personal favorites. I really wish to be able to see it on a big screen one day.
Im praying for Matt Reeves to come back and add to the Cloverfield mythos. I love 10 Cloverfield Lane, was kinda disappointed by Paradox, yet i love the first movie with all ny heart! I just would love to see Reeves tackle it after he's done with The Batman 2 and his Penguin series!
Watching your movie reviews is my favorite part of the Halloween season. You always come out with a video on a movie that I forgot about but loved and makes me want to go revisit them.
When cloverfield came out in 2008 it was just 2 weeks after my 13th birthday and my brother took me to see it in theaters. I have never seen a found footage film nor too many monster movies at that point, and it was an experience i could never forget. they really did something impressive with the found footage style and having the budget for the larger sets really made it feel realistic, the design of the monster plus the sound design in general in the movie was incredibly effective, whenever the monster roared I could feel the chills on my spine. The amount of storytelling they could pull off from this POV was impressive as well, every shot and every edit managed to add to the overall story / worldbuilding but somehow also feel natural. Overall, a very excellent movie and its success is probably the reason for the surge of found footage movies in the late 2000's / early 2010's
Loved Cloverfield so much, truly brought found footage back from the dead in a big way. Can't wait to hear your review of Flanagan's new The Fall of the House of Usher
I think the helicopter crash scene was SO effective in theaters. I've had nightmares like that where you believe you are falling to earth and will die, the characters saying "Oh Jesus I'm so sorry" is just perfect writing and filming.
As a kid,I remember seeing the giant promotional poster they had at our Regal theater and always being disturbed seeing what was lurking in the ocean,heading towards New York 🗽
one of the most immersive theatre experiences. with all the myspace ARG rabbitholes, mystery and hype in the build up it really had to deliver. it absolutely did, in spades

Haven't seen Cloverfield in a minute but I remember watching it a ton back in the day and just being so impressed by it. Not to mention it launched one of the best ARGs the internet has ever seen
One of my most abiding memories was how amazing the end credit music (Roar) is, then discovering that the only music that'd been released for the film was from the party at the beginning. People started recording the audio in the theatre, other people kept trying to clean it up more and more, and the studio eventually realized that there were probably people that would pay to buy the thing. Still one of my favorite bits of standalone film movie.
Personally, I believe this is the peak of found footage filmmaking. Somehow Matt Reeves managed to capture so much atmosphere, mood, and tension in the sub genre. On top of that, he managed to keep it grounded while pushing the theatrics so far. We have so many great set pieces and rememberable moments to enjoy. The acting is pretty damn great, the action is amazing, and the horror thrives. It truly feels large scale and the world feels open. We aren’t confined to a woods setting or an individual house. We are taken through a whole city and into the air, while never losing the found footage touch. Beyond just the film, it is an amazing monster movie. Feeling like what an American Godzilla film should’ve been. The alien feels so alive and just as much of a looming threat. The illusion of confusion and the dread is real. Can we also mention the extensive amount of lore that has been explored regarding the online marketing and extra films we have gotten in the universe. The film can be viewed as a singular story or you can view it as a puzzle piece to a larger picture. What I think really adds to the film is that the characters are not integral to the story. The characters are just in the middle of the raging monsters path. There is a mystery and love story between the characters, but they could be replaced by any other person in the universe and the monster will still exist. It genuinely feels like a random experience and a group of people documenting their situation. It feels in the same vein of WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005). I absolutely love the film and rewatch it every other year.
I've been following you since 2015 ish. I believe my taste is similar to how you explain and express movies, ideas, and media to which goes greatly appreciated. Sometimes you say what I've been thinking for years, and it honestly is cathartic. Thank you!
The marketing for this movie was incredible. The mystery behind what the creature looked like and what its intentions were was super captivating. Brings back fond memories of high school for me.
The fact that they only "ONLY" had 25 million for their budget was astounding. 15 years is not that long ago, and the production value and special effects are extraordinary. I watch this film over and over wondering how they pulled it off.
Seeing this movie in the theatre as a 13 year old with my parents, with zero knowledge of what this movie was going to be, is a core memory for me. It has to be one of the best theatre experiences of my life, just seeing that monster on a huge screen was insane. I was terrified but also obsessed with this movie. I've must have watched this so many times when it came on DVD later.

I love this movie so much, one of my all-time favorites. I was 10 when it came out & became obsessed with it. I remember watching the ending on CZcams over & over again trying to figure out what fell from the sky. My parents probably got tired of hearing me talk about it lol. I absolutely love Cloverfield! Like you, I was so fascinated by this campaign, and I also was hoping it would have been a Godzilla film but I’m so glad I was wrong this movie stands as one of my favorite films in general to this day
I was 8 when cloverfield came out. My dad was away for alcoholism, but after my first communion my mom brought me to “Home Video” (rental chain, not sure if it was national or local) to pick out any movie I wanted. I was super excited to rent Cloverfield. Like you the trailer mesmerized my little brain. It also scared me which made me even more curious. The movie scared the shit out of me, and I paused it in the third act to calm down. The part where the girl’s head exploded behind the hospital curtain is an image that never left me. This was an awesome movie, and it comforted me in a terrible time in my life. Since watching Clovefield I’ve always had a lot of respect for the found footage genre despite the influx of bullshit that came out the found footage boom of 2009-2014. Anyway, please review Practical Magic. I could’ve sworn you did but couldn’t find your review of it. I just watched it last night, and it’s right up your ally. Please, review Practical Magic starring Sandra Bullock for me, Chris.
Matt Reeves has a flawless filmography so far, and this is probably his most underrated movie. I would even go so far as to say, that this is one of the best monster movies ever made, because the found footage perspective just really makes you feel small and helpless and it works so well for such a movie because it makes you really feel the size of the monster.
What made this movie so effective is that, like in real life, you don’t immediately know what is going on in an event of mass hysteria. Usually, monster movies open with the some super secret organization doing stuff and you already know the everything from the get go.
I remember for the longest time thinking this movie was an underrated gem but I ended up watching it last year and I couldn't bare to finish it because the acting and the characters were so unbelievably unlikely and cringe.
I missed the marketing campaign, but always had a soft spot for the first Cloverfield. You really feel like you're there, and the footage "underneath" was a great idea. All ordinary footage before the meteorite happens, and the meteorite is so small you don't even necessarily notice it. I love that. Makes it seem somewhat less far-fetched.

YOU GOT THE 4K BLU-RAY OF COVERFIELD!?! NO FRIGGIN' WAY! I seen that movie in 2008 and it's enjoyable with the monster rampaging NYC while they filming the entire monstrous happening throughout the film. It's very brilliant. Also you should review more horror movies next year. I can't wait for it. KEEP IT UP AND HAPPY HALLOWEEN, CHRIS!
I really loved this movie back in 2008. For one, it was the last big film I saw before I left for the Army so that was memorable. But what made it so fun for me was it had the right amount of mystery with the plight of the main characters. It wasn't trying to raise a bunch of bullshit questions and never give answers like a lot of modern JJ Abrams movies (or others for that matter), and it was simple. Guy tries to find his love interest while a monster is attacking. I also really enjoyed that last bit with the object falling into the water. For me, like Alien, it didn't need an explanation. It was enough and kept you on your toes about why the monster was there. Plus it really is a time capsule piece before smartphones were everywhere and people could just film anywhere at any time.
You mentioned how you've never experienced marketing for anything like we had with Cloverfield. The Call of Duty Zombies ARGs and viral campaigns they did to market Black Ops 1 and then with the other Black Ops games as well were just as cool if not even more fun. Also the fact that A Quiet Place was originally written as a Cloverfield Universe film makes me want it to be cannon in the universes as well lol. The monsters are very Cloverfield-esque.
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. I wish we got more "kaiju" movies with this perspective. I think the closest we got was Gareth Edwards' Monsters. It grounds the fantastical elements and makes them believable, immersing you in this world. We need more movies like this.
This is so perfect. I was just talking to my buds about how amazing the marketing of this movie was. I don't recall any film being quite effective and vague like Cloverfield. The amount of hours and conversations that were had about what the monster could be was immense. I was also like 11 so my imagination was peaking lol Great video!
OH I'm so relieved you love this ... I've seen it get so much bad-mouthing over the years, and I just don't get it, I thought it was absolutely FAB, jaw-dropping, and I stayed in the cinema and watched it again immediately!!! Me, I got none of the publicity, no idea of any of the hype, which I found out about later, so knew absolutely nothing at all about it when I went in (usually the absolute best way to see a film) and found myself swept along on an absolute roller-coaster ride of a movie with an awesome premise!! LOVED it!!!!
Great film pick for review! Always thought the lore of this movie outlasted its run by far. Really interesting and creative way Matt Reeves infused the tape recordings together. Much agreed about the marketing campaign! I remember everybody was sucked into it. Genius way to get ppl talking. Been waiting for an actual continuation. You can hear at the end of credits just a whisper say "its still alive"
I would have loved if the ending of the Cloverfield Paradox (with the spacecraft plunging to earth) would have turned out to be the falling object in the original, but the timing just doesn’t work out. Anyway, yeah I just watched it again 2 days ago and was impressed on how well it holds up. Pacing, story, graphics, etc.
I remember seeing this movie opening night with my best friend, ripped, and we had to sit in the front row. It was an incredible experience and I will always love this visceral thrill ride of a movie.
I had done a lot of 'games' with the pre-movie viral ad stuff...it enhanced the first viewing and subsequent viewings so much that it endeared the movie to me forever.😊
It still has one of the most dynamic audio mixes ever made. If you have not heard this mix on a serious system, one that can deliver 115db peaks in the 20hz region (which is rare even in commercial cinemas), you are missing out.

I’ll never forget the hype and marketing for this movie when I was a kid. The first teaser played before Transformers 2007, it didn’t even have a title, it was just called “1-18-08”. The fake MySpace accounts for the character’s, websites, fan concept art on what everybody speculated what the monster would look like, because the marketing team did a great job at hiding the monster until the movies release. I remember my mom calling school for me to leave early so I could go see this movie with my cousin opening night. This movie will forever be a core memory in my life
Cloverfield is one of my Top 10 favorite movies ever made. So many Easter eggs, hidden messages, a creepy monster and a terrifying first person viewing experience. Unforgettable! I saw it in the theater my senior year of high school in 2008. I still remember going to the website and there were all kinds of cryptic messages and images with a mysterious trailer. The viral marketing was genius.

I love how they said Japan as to where the main character is going, which is a nice Easter egg of which is the origin of Kaiju/giant monsters first all started and popular.
This build up to this movie was so cool and unique. I was 13 and obsessed with all the online hints and easter eggs. The movie lived up to the hype too
Chris, I remember when that teaser trailer played right before Transformers; it was very engaging and got me frightened about the movie. I was indeed surprised and obsessed too looking forward for this movie as well when I was 14 seeing on the big screen. This was a childhood movie of mine and becoming a cinephile growing up. I remember seeing online marketing about the news of an oil rig in the middle of the ocean involving those small aliens in the bottom of the sea, man such an awesome movie! I can’t wait for the actual sequel to this, hope it captures this type of hype and momentum.
This being the time of Lost, I was super big into JJ Abrams and monsters. Always loved monster movies. And then the real treat was… it came out on my 17th birthday. Instead of having a party I invited a bunch of friends from school, and it was one of the most special moments of my high school years.
I immediately came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned the S mystery box that Abrams put out a few years back. That to me is still the most underrated marketing and unique execution of a piece of entertainment ever. Cloverfield is great too.
I just watched this last night! I LOVE Cloverfield! I too was swept up and obsessed with marketing campaign! I was on a message board trying to figure it out. I love the design of the Cloverfield monster! I love the movie too but I do wish we saw the monster a little bit more. I hope they do a more traditional sequel of this movie.

I remember watching this movie earlier this year. And I gotta say: this is definitely one of the best found footage movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a movie that genuinely made me feel scared. The monster is fascinating. It’s not some monster that’s just destroying stuff, it’s a scared baby trying to find it’s parent. That’s a very interesting take on a Kaiju. Of course, with it being found footage, you don’t get to see the monster that often, but when you do, especially the part where we see it up close and clear, it’s fricking terrifying! And the post credit scene where if you play it backwards, the “it’s still alive” line, is chilling.
Great movie. And with a supposed actual sequel being Announced, that’d be very interesting to see
I honestly think it's THE best found footage film ever made. I know there's not a ton of high budget ones, but still, it's phenomenal

Truthfully, there’s not much story to tell 🤷🏾♂️ we know the monster was blipped onto Earth due to a particle accelerator accident in another universe and it died during the bombing.. that “Cloverfield Paradox” movie kind of ruined everything with delivering too many answers.

One idea would be to see the same story from another angle. That's what I wanted Cloverfield Lane to be... unfortunately, although a very good movie by itself, it didn't meet my expectations
The movie closely reflects the events of 9/11, showing people covered in dust and set in New York with the attack occurring at the city center. It effectively portrays the fear and confusion experienced by people during the unfolding events. The only available footage is through news and handheld cameras. Additionally, upon watching this movie after seeing 9/11 footage, clear influences become apparent. 'Cloverfield' is a film that strongly resonates with the fears and anxieties stemming from 9/11, much like how 'Gojira' was influenced by nuclear fears in Japan.

Arguably it’s the best American Kaiju film and this is why. The best Kaiju films are metaphors for fears from real attacks and dangers. Nice observation about 9.11!
This is why it's my favorite kaiju movie, I was (still am), obsessed with 9/11 and both War of the Worlds and Cloverfield were the first (and IMO still best) examples of how that massive tragedy influenced our lives since
I’m kind of shocked that Chris went into as much detail as he did about underrated elements of this film and not once mentioned the love story and the underlying message of letting those you love know how you feel, because in the end, that’s all that ever truly matters.

Matt Reeves directed his ass off with this film. This film reminds me why Matt Reeves is one of the most important voices in the genre filmmaking industry. So blessed to have him helm Batman for the next decade.
I think Matt Reeves is getting a sequel and then that's it. Then the new DC universe will start with James Gunn. But maybe they will let Matt Reeves do a third movie. I hope they do.

The ARG for this film was unparalleled. And fleshed out so much of the backstory - whether it was stuff about the Tagruato corporation, Slusho or just the characters themselves. The MySpace profiles for all the characters were added to throughout the build-up to the movie as more things were discovered online. _They even changed Hud's height from 6'1 to 2'6 on release date because he gets bitten in half._
This is one of my favorite found-footage style movies of all time. Watching it in the movie theater as a young teenager was a great experience. I do remember a lot of people complaining about motion sickness back then and me thinking they were being over-dramatic.

One of my favorite movies of all time. My dad is a huge monster movie fan and he told me out Cloverfield when I was growing up but I wasn’t able to watch it for a while because I was so young. Hearing my dad tell me about the movie, and the time we spent discussing it after I was old enough to see it makes this movie so special for me.
I was an extra for a week of night shoots on this film. A group of us for a minute got really close seeing each other every night on this gig. I got my SAG wavers in this picture. I remember the actor whose the one tasked with holding the camera and blew up after this movie was really casual about it being his first big movie. He was so zen about everything. There was a bit as soilders we did where we reheresed a whole 'oner' where we get deployed into the hot zone, run at the creature, stop, shoot at it, stop, look at it, realize it had no effect, then retreat running our asses off back down the street while screaming. Our group had the comedic beats down to a science, shot it i believe a dozen times. We got the last take in right before the sun was coming up. The spot where the creature was supposed to be was the biggest most giant blue screen I've ever seen in my life. It must've been four stories high. Impressive. It was scary on its own. When the film got released, i went to go see it first showing. Unexpectedly, the film kept giving me motion sickness from all the hand-held camera jerkiness. I had to watch a lot of it looking down. Same Thing happened to me seeing The Blair Witch Project in theatres in '99. So, i kept waiting for our sequence running at the creature. Long story short: it was left on the cutting room floor. A lot of scenes I was in as out of focus solder or medic guy were actually in the movie which were cool seeing scenes I remember shooting and now was seeing how the final result came out. I thought it looked great. It was such chaos shooting at the time that it really could've went either way. A lot of films as extras you are in the holding area waiting for days. This movie we just would stay on set because we were constantly being called back. It was just easier. ODD FUN FACT: That week of shooting, every night we would walk to set, it was on a studio lot, and we had the same backlot walk through really cool old sets, one of them bizarrely being the stored STREETS OF FIRE (1984) set. We of a certain age all knew it instantly too. Random weird note is going from non-union to SAG in the middle of the shoot. We took a lot of meal penalty breaks to work through breaks which was double overtime pay and penalty pay so the biggest checks I ever got as an extra was on this movie. One check paid my rent. The thrill was I went from non union side of food to the SAG truck for dinner and it was like being handed the keys to the kingdom. My extra group kept roasting me saying i forgot the little people and I had gotten too big for them now. I would say, sorry, who are you people, security! But, of course, they immediately started hitting me up to smuggle the good chef prepared meals back into the non union camp for them. One of the A list actors on the call sheet had actually caught me, but did the Monkey don't see, hear or tell panamime gesture to me, which was extremely cool because you didn't want to get kicked off a film set and get a mark against you cause it would get you banned from work at that studio. It will follow you. 2007 was a year long adventure I spent in LA doing strictly that for a living. Cloverfield was one of the good memories from a gig at that time.

This is such an underrated movie. One of the few movies that legitimately unnerves me, something about the monster is just so creepy
I love this movie. It was incredibly scary and proved Matt Reeves was a director to keep my eyes on. That ended up becoming true, as he has gone on to make one incredible film after the other(Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and The Batman are all great, and War for the Planet of the Apes is my favorite film of the last decade). He's now one of my favorite directors.
Also, this wasn't Matt Reeves' first film. His first film was The Pallbearer, with David Schwimmer and Gwen Paltrow. It's kinda a romantic comedy made in 1996. It's not great, but shows Reeves had some promise.
Honestly one of my all time favorite movies. So great story, great effects, trippy for someone who knew absolutely nothing about the movie before hand. Thanks for reviewing it. Wish they did an actual sequel but glad it didn't kill this movie.
I remember seeing the commercials for this movie and becoming instantly obsessed! I happened to watch it during a road trip, lying in the backseat of the car with my tiny portable DVD player, in the middle of the night. Even though I watched it on such a tiny screen I was so immersed. I remember just lying there when it ended, feeling this chill all over my body. It was such a special experience and even though the movie is far from perfect, it definitely is one of my personal favorites. I really wish to be able to see it on a big screen one day.
Im praying for Matt Reeves to come back and add to the Cloverfield mythos. I love 10 Cloverfield Lane, was kinda disappointed by Paradox, yet i love the first movie with all ny heart! I just would love to see Reeves tackle it after he's done with The Batman 2 and his Penguin series!
That scene of the girl getting bit by a small creature and then exploding behind like a medical screen is burned into my brain for 15 years

Watching your movie reviews is my favorite part of the Halloween season. You always come out with a video on a movie that I forgot about but loved and makes me want to go revisit them.
When cloverfield came out in 2008 it was just 2 weeks after my 13th birthday and my brother took me to see it in theaters. I have never seen a found footage film nor too many monster movies at that point, and it was an experience i could never forget. they really did something impressive with the found footage style and having the budget for the larger sets really made it feel realistic, the design of the monster plus the sound design in general in the movie was incredibly effective, whenever the monster roared I could feel the chills on my spine. The amount of storytelling they could pull off from this POV was impressive as well, every shot and every edit managed to add to the overall story / worldbuilding but somehow also feel natural. Overall, a very excellent movie and its success is probably the reason for the surge of found footage movies in the late 2000's / early 2010's

I think the helicopter crash scene was SO effective in theaters. I've had nightmares like that where you believe you are falling to earth and will die, the characters saying "Oh Jesus I'm so sorry" is just perfect writing and filming.
As a kid,I remember seeing the giant promotional poster they had at our Regal theater and always being disturbed seeing what was lurking in the ocean,heading towards New York 🗽

Haven't seen Cloverfield in a minute but I remember watching it a ton back in the day and just being so impressed by it. Not to mention it launched one of the best ARGs the internet has ever seen
One of my most abiding memories was how amazing the end credit music (Roar) is, then discovering that the only music that'd been released for the film was from the party at the beginning. People started recording the audio in the theatre, other people kept trying to clean it up more and more, and the studio eventually realized that there were probably people that would pay to buy the thing. Still one of my favorite bits of standalone film movie.

Personally, I believe this is the peak of found footage filmmaking. Somehow Matt Reeves managed to capture so much atmosphere, mood, and tension in the sub genre. On top of that, he managed to keep it grounded while pushing the theatrics so far. We have so many great set pieces and rememberable moments to enjoy. The acting is pretty damn great, the action is amazing, and the horror thrives. It truly feels large scale and the world feels open. We aren’t confined to a woods setting or an individual house. We are taken through a whole city and into the air, while never losing the found footage touch. Beyond just the film, it is an amazing monster movie. Feeling like what an American Godzilla film should’ve been. The alien feels so alive and just as much of a looming threat. The illusion of confusion and the dread is real. Can we also mention the extensive amount of lore that has been explored regarding the online marketing and extra films we have gotten in the universe. The film can be viewed as a singular story or you can view it as a puzzle piece to a larger picture. What I think really adds to the film is that the characters are not integral to the story. The characters are just in the middle of the raging monsters path. There is a mystery and love story between the characters, but they could be replaced by any other person in the universe and the monster will still exist. It genuinely feels like a random experience and a group of people documenting their situation. It feels in the same vein of WAR OF THE WORLDS (2005). I absolutely love the film and rewatch it every other year.
I've been following you since 2015 ish. I believe my taste is similar to how you explain and express movies, ideas, and media to which goes greatly appreciated. Sometimes you say what I've been thinking for years, and it honestly is cathartic. Thank you!
The marketing for this movie was incredible. The mystery behind what the creature looked like and what its intentions were was super captivating. Brings back fond memories of high school for me.

The fact that they only "ONLY" had 25 million for their budget was astounding. 15 years is not that long ago, and the production value and special effects are extraordinary. I watch this film over and over wondering how they pulled it off.
That empty horse carriage is close to my favourite scene in the movie, that’s how chilling & effective I found it. Top 5 for sure.

Seeing this movie in the theatre as a 13 year old with my parents, with zero knowledge of what this movie was going to be, is a core memory for me. It has to be one of the best theatre experiences of my life, just seeing that monster on a huge screen was insane. I was terrified but also obsessed with this movie. I've must have watched this so many times when it came on DVD later.

I love this movie so much, one of my all-time favorites. I was 10 when it came out & became obsessed with it. I remember watching the ending on CZcams over & over again trying to figure out what fell from the sky. My parents probably got tired of hearing me talk about it lol. I absolutely love Cloverfield! Like you, I was so fascinated by this campaign, and I also was hoping it would have been a Godzilla film but I’m so glad I was wrong this movie stands as one of my favorite films in general to this day
I was 8 when cloverfield came out. My dad was away for alcoholism, but after my first communion my mom brought me to “Home Video” (rental chain, not sure if it was national or local) to pick out any movie I wanted. I was super excited to rent Cloverfield. Like you the trailer mesmerized my little brain. It also scared me which made me even more curious. The movie scared the shit out of me, and I paused it in the third act to calm down. The part where the girl’s head exploded behind the hospital curtain is an image that never left me. This was an awesome movie, and it comforted me in a terrible time in my life. Since watching Clovefield I’ve always had a lot of respect for the found footage genre despite the influx of bullshit that came out the found footage boom of 2009-2014. Anyway, please review Practical Magic. I could’ve sworn you did but couldn’t find your review of it. I just watched it last night, and it’s right up your ally. Please, review Practical Magic starring Sandra Bullock for me, Chris.
Matt Reeves has a flawless filmography so far, and this is probably his most underrated movie. I would even go so far as to say, that this is one of the best monster movies ever made, because the found footage perspective just really makes you feel small and helpless and it works so well for such a movie because it makes you really feel the size of the monster.

What made this movie so effective is that, like in real life, you don’t immediately know what is going on in an event of mass hysteria.
Usually, monster movies open with the some super secret organization doing stuff and you already know the everything from the get go.

I missed the marketing campaign, but always had a soft spot for the first Cloverfield. You really feel like you're there, and the footage "underneath" was a great idea. All ordinary footage before the meteorite happens, and the meteorite is so small you don't even necessarily notice it. I love that. Makes it seem somewhat less far-fetched.

I really loved this movie back in 2008. For one, it was the last big film I saw before I left for the Army so that was memorable. But what made it so fun for me was it had the right amount of mystery with the plight of the main characters. It wasn't trying to raise a bunch of bullshit questions and never give answers like a lot of modern JJ Abrams movies (or others for that matter), and it was simple. Guy tries to find his love interest while a monster is attacking. I also really enjoyed that last bit with the object falling into the water. For me, like Alien, it didn't need an explanation. It was enough and kept you on your toes about why the monster was there. Plus it really is a time capsule piece before smartphones were everywhere and people could just film anywhere at any time.
You mentioned how you've never experienced marketing for anything like we had with Cloverfield. The Call of Duty Zombies ARGs and viral campaigns they did to market Black Ops 1 and then with the other Black Ops games as well were just as cool if not even more fun.
Also the fact that A Quiet Place was originally written as a Cloverfield Universe film makes me want it to be cannon in the universes as well lol. The monsters are very Cloverfield-esque.
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. I wish we got more "kaiju" movies with this perspective. I think the closest we got was Gareth Edwards' Monsters. It grounds the fantastical elements and makes them believable, immersing you in this world. We need more movies like this.

This is so perfect. I was just talking to my buds about how amazing the marketing of this movie was. I don't recall any film being quite effective and vague like Cloverfield. The amount of hours and conversations that were had about what the monster could be was immense. I was also like 11 so my imagination was peaking lol Great video!
OH I'm so relieved you love this ... I've seen it get so much bad-mouthing over the years, and I just don't get it, I thought it was absolutely FAB, jaw-dropping, and I stayed in the cinema and watched it again immediately!!! Me, I got none of the publicity, no idea of any of the hype, which I found out about later, so knew absolutely nothing at all about it when I went in (usually the absolute best way to see a film) and found myself swept along on an absolute roller-coaster ride of a movie with an awesome premise!! LOVED it!!!!

I would have loved if the ending of the Cloverfield Paradox (with the spacecraft plunging to earth) would have turned out to be the falling object in the original, but the timing just doesn’t work out. Anyway, yeah I just watched it again 2 days ago and was impressed on how well it holds up. Pacing, story, graphics, etc.
I remember seeing this movie opening night with my best friend, ripped, and we had to sit in the front row. It was an incredible experience and I will always love this visceral thrill ride of a movie.
I had done a lot of 'games' with the pre-movie viral ad stuff...it enhanced the first viewing and subsequent viewings so much that it endeared the movie to me forever.😊
Hell yeah Chris! I remember that feeling seeing this trailer in theaters too. I didn't actually watch the movie until 2021 and it still blew my mind!
It still has one of the most dynamic audio mixes ever made. If you have not heard this mix on a serious system, one that can deliver 115db peaks in the 20hz region (which is rare even in commercial cinemas), you are missing out.

I’ll never forget the hype and marketing for this movie when I was a kid. The first teaser played before Transformers 2007, it didn’t even have a title, it was just called “1-18-08”. The fake MySpace accounts for the character’s, websites, fan concept art on what everybody speculated what the monster would look like, because the marketing team did a great job at hiding the monster until the movies release. I remember my mom calling school for me to leave early so I could go see this movie with my cousin opening night. This movie will forever be a core memory in my life

Cloverfield is one of my Top 10 favorite movies ever made. So many Easter eggs, hidden messages, a creepy monster and a terrifying first person viewing experience. Unforgettable! I saw it in the theater my senior year of high school in 2008. I still remember going to the website and there were all kinds of cryptic messages and images with a mysterious trailer. The viral marketing was genius.

This being the time of Lost, I was super big into JJ Abrams and monsters. Always loved monster movies. And then the real treat was… it came out on my 17th birthday. Instead of having a party I invited a bunch of friends from school, and it was one of the most special moments of my high school years.
I immediately came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned the S mystery box that Abrams put out a few years back. That to me is still the most underrated marketing and unique execution of a piece of entertainment ever. Cloverfield is great too.

I just watched this last night! I LOVE Cloverfield! I too was swept up and obsessed with marketing campaign! I was on a message board trying to figure it out. I love the design of the Cloverfield monster! I love the movie too but I do wish we saw the monster a little bit more. I hope they do a more traditional sequel of this movie.
