Anchoring in the Abacos. Without a Windlass!

  • We leave West End and head for Sale Key. After a short overnight visit, we cruise to Pensacola Cay to explore the island. Unfortunately, the windlass is still not working so we had to pull the anchor by hand at both islands.

    I remember the windlass repair along with the fiberglass work that went along with it. Hopefully just a loose wire. Best wishes Skipper and Lynn

      @@tryingnottosink9107 Well. You did a great job modifying the site of the original so the positive aspect is if you have to pull it out you know all the odds/ends about it as you did the work. Being at sea doesn’t help for sure…I know it was doing its job perfectly at first… I’m working on a smaller windlass on a smaller boat. I had a bad DC windlass breaker..Replaced that..That got power to the solenoid in the engine compartment. You can hear it knocking when you hit the switch…The winch moved a little and then nothing. Its getting power but all indicators is the motor is shot…its an 07 and spent its first eleven years in Florida. Nuff said about that. Good luck. Safe travels…

    Been enjoying many of your videos from the last year or so and seeing some of the sailing grounds I visited in my sailing days way back in the early 2000s. Brought back some good memories. But after sharing some of your maintenance misadventures, I think I have a better understanding of why your channel is named "Trying Not to Sink." 😉

    Those steaks sure looked tasty. I survived over 10 years without an anchor windlass up here in New England.. fortunately you're in shallow Waters. But you have a heavier anchor than I had. I just don't understand why you don't FedEx a new windlass overnight to the nearest Port so you can take care of this inconvenience

    Hey Ed, I'm here in Titusville. My port engine died so I pulled into your marina to have a mechanic check it out. Bad fuel pump.
    Anyways, I stopped by Triton to introduce myself. But y'all aren't here.
    I'm a little surprised you left your inflatable in the water tied to the stern.
    So like two ships that pass in the night. Maybe next time.

    I don’t know anything about windless equipment, but wonder if you happened to put a multimeter meter on the motor winding to check for an open winding (continuity) or actuated the switches and checked for voltage on the output side of the switch or Control module however it works?

    • @ss939ww
      @ss939ww Před měsícem +1

      An additional thought that occurs to me is that the commutator needs continuity from the brushes and may need to be cleaned or is it possible to pull the brushes and check them? Other words, dirty brushes can interrupt continuity and the springs that drive the brushes to produce pressure against the commutator could be dirty and may need to be cleaned.

    • @ss939ww
      @ss939ww Před měsícem +1

      Lastly, obviously a fuse or circuit breaker could interrupt power. Wonder if there’s a breaker or fuse at the motor as well? Where is there a limiter switch that produces a cut out function?

    Given your algae issues have you considered having your tanks and fuel polished?

      @@tryingnottosink9107it's better to have it done professionally. A professional will remove all the fuel in your tanks and actually clean the tanks before polishing the fuel and returning back to your tanks

    Is it algae or diesel bug.

    • @tryingnottosink9107
      @tryingnottosink9107  Před měsícem

      I don't know the difference.

    • @Harrybollox
      @Harrybollox Před měsícem +1

      I suspect you have diesel bug, Algae you would pickup in bad fuel maybe but unlikely, but it won’t grow in the tank, it needs oxygen. Algae on the water surface that we see on waterways in hot summers should have no way into your tanks. Blue algae is toxic if you do encounter it anywhere. Diesel bug is yucky slimy growing stuff that lives in the diesel, it only thrives if it has water, this is usually from condensation in the tank as the temperatures fluctuate outside, but can be from any intrusion of water into the diesel, or even old water left in the bottom of the tank that’s been there years. Typical biocides for diesel tanks try to kill off the diesel bug but it’s not fool proof. I’ve read that the bug becomes resistant to the biocide but I am not sure that is true. Anyway, dumping biocide into the tank at the recommended rate on the biocide can is the way to go at first. And repeated at every fill. The problem is the biocide kills the bug, then the detritus flows thru to the Racor and you end up with blocked or dirty filters and gunk in the bowl. It can look like a wet mushroom when you drain it thru the Racor drain. If your issue is a big problem and does not go away with biocide there are a few more wholesale options , like installing a fuel polishing system , or getting a professional fuel polish, or full empty and tank sanitising , or even new tanks. As with all boat stuff it can get pricey but hopefully you can manage it with biocide and Racor servicing above what you would normally do. I get it occasionally but biocide keeps it at bay. I think I posted this in the wrong video , it was your Bahamas trip I heard you mention algae, hence the post. I always watch your videos, here in Australia a trip to the Bahamas or Florida etc on my boat is not really feasible 😁
