Thanks, Alex. Especially about teaching. How to teach something is different from doing
it, as you know. I had a skill; lwhen that career was over I had to do a lot of thinking
and a lot of work to figure out if I could actually get it across to others. When I finally got
that problem solved ( for most students ) the next step was to see if I could teach the
other instructors my method. Limited success with that.
Anyhow, where I'm headed with this is I would love to see you do a series on teaching.
At level one a magician shows a trick and explains how it is done - some folks are pretty good at this, some are better. At level two the teacher/magician could get into what other teacher/magicians might look for to help
them with students who are having trouble. ( Gawd, that was a horrible sentence. ! )
Okay, time for a little objective flattery .... you are fun to watch, you could do anything and a lot of people would watch. Even puzzles! ( Sorry Chris ). But you also have a kind of motivational flair. I sincerely think that
is a gift and that you have it. A lot of people would love to see more from you.

Thanks for the great insights Alex! I liked how you didn’t only say the “good” sides of making money off magic! As a 6th tip, I’d say I’ve made a lot of money from winning talent shows, mainly at school. It’s basic, but if you work hard enough on individual performances, it’s a nice small source of magic income!

Does anyone know a good base line to charge when performing gigs? I never know if I should be asking for an hourly rate or a one time payment for the whole event.
It depends a lot on the region you live in, and your quality of work. I plan to do a video on this soon, but I would suggest calling magicians in your area and asking what they would charge.
@@MAGICSIX this would be like a wanna be hooker calling hookers in the area and seeing their price lmao. Know your worth, be reasonable about it. We're all competing for the same gigs at the end of the day.

Usually when performing with cards not a lot of people can see the cards and people are lost during the trick, then making it awkward. Do you think I should do card tricks or should I do props? Or is there a certain way to do card magic in front of large crowds?

Also, you have to work on making the effects play larger. Use space, move around, and bring the cards up eye level whenever possible. I have done complete stage shows with a deck of cards, so it is possible for sure.

there is a lot 'right' in this video. although i'm definitely not a magician, i've made a profession out of my hobby. which was sound and music. and after it became a profession it definitely became less fun. which is someting to keep in mind although i've never regret it! something that i think is missing in this video is the fact that if you want to do something for money, you have to want to do it for free as well, otherwise it won't work! For me there is no shame in having magic as a hobby. and doing a trick for my friends, figuring out a trick that i see or being fooled by a trick that i see satisfies me at the same level.

Magic shops often sell plastic junk that only "magicians" have. And the big shows are often expensive set ups with lot of props and light and smoke. I like coins and magic with every day items. Often performed with a smile and self irony.
