I made a Sailor Dress using a Vintage Pattern from the 1950s! (and it's utterly dreamy)

In this video, I used a vintage simplicity pattern from 1954 to make myself the sailor dress of my dreams. I had so much fun making this. I went over the instructions given in the vintage patterns, while making changes as I saw fit to suit my personal needs, and my personal sewing style. Including ignoring the machine zipper instructions to put in a zipper by hand instead.

I had a sailor dress that a seamstress made for me when I was 10. Once it didn’t fit anymore, I started dreaming about having one. That is 50 years ago. I think is time!
The 1890s-1910s sailor dresses are suuuuper cute! If you’re interested, that’s what my recommendation is!

My sister's early 1960s sailor dress was a heavy white (twill) fabric with a black flat trim (half inch woven braid). Unfortunately, we only have two bw snapshots of her wearing it. She remembered how pretty the dress looked but difficult to wear. Heavy and all white with a full crinoline petticoat underneath. Being 18 years apart in age, I never received any of her dresses as hand- me-downs. Sigh! I lacked her fashion sense... My college age clothes consisted of baggy cargo pants (pockets), buffalo plaid flannel shirts, and Gap sweatshirts. My daughters look gorgeous in any style... They love vintage, retro and sportswear. Style skipped me but they sometimes wear my tops. Lol 🎄 Happy holidays to you and your family 🎄

What a delight to witness the thought and careful sewing! I'm older (like really old! Lol) and sewed from patterns like this one. How much easier the designs are now. YES a sailor dress!!! I like the Edwardian sailor swim suits but I LOVE sailor dresses and they are also my dream dress. I’m happy you showed how to sew the stripes on the collar, I once tried to sew them on a clean way but I failed miserably lol, so I’ve always wanted to see someone showing their process. This is SO great! That poplin gives such a great body to the dress. Also, not at all jealous about that Art Nouveau headboard. Nope, not even a little bit. (Narrator: Megan was in fact green with envy about that headboard!) I adore the whale bag too!

I LOVE sailor shirts and dresses. I was a teen in the 80s when it came through, again. This came out MAGNIFICENTLY!! Also, I love Sewing Rebelstine, who blatantly ignores and skips steps. You go, girl! The ribbon striping was PERFECT!

In the 40's my mother worked for WPA making children's clothing. She designed a sailor dress with a hat. There is a picture somewhere with my sister wearing it. It was a big deal in those days to get your picture taken. She was very proud.

I had a sailor uniform when I was in the kindergarten, and I wasn't too jazzed about it then 😆😂, but now the day that my closet get considerably more vintage, rest assured that I'd have something with a sailor collar 😆 (...and I'd put a reference to my favorite admiral(s) to it somehow!)

I’m relatively new to the sewing world as a whole…pattern drafting, modifying, etc. I knew enough to follow basic patterns. I have a genuine question: Are some machines designed to be able to sew over pins? So many people are adamant to the point of zealotry that you should NEVER sew over pins, but I’ve seen a bunch of folks with high end, or industrial machines sew over them with no problem. I’m just confused. Any help would be deeply appreciated.
I think theoretically I’m not supposed to, and I do break needles every now and then by doing it. But you can try with your machine and see!

I'M SMILING. Your sail into the past with your creation of the little sailor dress is so cute. I agree that there are more sailor dresses in your future. For research into a variation that is more costume-like, I suggest 1960's movies with Doris day or Sandra Dee. The look would be with a more fitted waist and a fuller gathered shirt. The other option would be a longer, lower waisted version on a straight sheath with a box pleated skirt set 5 inches or so below the waistline. A cap sleeve would complete the vertical line, but an elbow length sleeve would work. The fabric needs to take a sharp pressed in pleat.

And thanks for showing a hand stitched zipper, I hand sew a lot (in fact I just finished your Kefta pattern but in 4 layers so it can be a winter coat for a Canadian winter, all by hand) because most of the time my sewing machines are what cause me the most stress in a sewing project.

@@Sewstine I started with magenta wool-poly blend and dyed it with Rit Indigo after doing some little swatches in the colours of dye I had on hand) so the wool took the dye and the polyester didn't so it's got this neat mottled purple thing going on for the exterior, then it's interlined with a layer of cotton twill as a windbreak(Ikea curtains) and wool (old horse blanket) and lined with blue bunny print flannel (with a satin pillowcase to line the sleeves cause the flannel had too much friction). Thanks to your pattern (and a couple zoom calls with a friend for fitting because I am a brick with boobs) I now have a princess seam bodice block that fits me just right and I feel kind of invincible!!! :D Endless possibilities!!!

Everyday dresses were not flatlined/underlined in the 50s. Underlining was usually reserved for loosely woven wools and stage costumes. The flare in the skirt came from a ruffled half slip of many layers of nylon net, what we called a can-can slip. You can see these in old musical movies when girls dance and spin around. Debbie Reynolds was often seen in these when she was younger. You can also spot them at the prom in Back to the Future. They might be white or in vivid colors, just for fun. My sister had one with 5 layers, each a different shade of bright pastel with a rolled hem. I had a lot of fun playing with that petticoat.
Poplin is an excellent choice for this dress. The narrow trim used for these was middy braid, sold in small packets like bias or hem tape in red, white or navy blue. In the 50s and early 60s, kids delighted in having a shirt, blouse or dress in the sailor style. It really sparked our little imaginations, especially in the city, where sailboats were the province of the rich and not for the likes of us. Just one garment in our circle of friends would set us all dreaming.
Yours looks so nice and cute on you~! I've been conflicted over getting or making myself a sailor dress since my lolita obsessed teen years. I literally have a baby picture of myself in a white sailor dress and Nikes (I've been styling since I could sit up) and I want to remake the look but I'm concerned it'll look to seifuku on me as someone who is 'baby faced' 26 yr old. Enough of my own rant. Sailor uniforms are so cute, you're rocking it.

I never realized how cute this kind of dress looks on a petite grownup! As a child, I did not particularly like sailor costumes, but now, as a senior, I'm wondering if I could get away with it. I was convinced I couldn't sew a zip in because I only hand sew not machine sew, and I had only seen a zip being added using a machine. It was watching your videos that made me realise it could be done by hand sewing and would probably be easier that way

Thank you! Honestly - I’m so exhausted after coming home and I’m pretty much a napaholic too. My secret is that no matter how tired I am, I try to do about 30 minutes to an hour every day. I actually force myself so I keep up the habit. And on days when I have off and malcolm is at daycare, I spend the whole day doing things that take the most emotional energy like fitting or cutting out that expensive fabric. And it’s ok to cut yourself a break here or there. I hope that helps! It also helps that I have a very supportive husband - he is a full time parent - the way you are for your family - and he is always so encouraging. While I work 24 hours at a time, he is at home with Malcolm or sends Malcolm to daycare- and when I am home, I try to spend Malcolm’s every waking moment with him. But when he’s at daycare or sleeping - that time is mine!

As a amall child, I used to fantasize about my mother taking my siblings and I back with her to Korea wearing vintage sailor outfits. My mother never made them as I suggested. Learned long after she was gone, that it didn't happen because of my father's anti-uniform stance.
Later on, I bought a navy one on Amazon and do have fun wearing it, though I often think of sewing my own version, using high end construction techniques. Maybe some day it will be made.... Right now, I have other projects that are higher priority for my curated capsule wardrobe, relying on accessories to dress the outfits up or down or change from business to goth to punk.
