    Introducing Tifo’s new Writer & Presenter, Jon Mackenzie…
    When Jesse Marsch was appointed as Marcelo Bielsa’s replacement at Leeds United he was touted as an evolution tactically, similar in style, but more refined.
    But is that what his coaching style is really like?

    Things to note here: Jesse Marsch is far from wedded to the 4222. Rather, he believes shape should be fluid to accomplish the goals of the match plan in pressing. And he has no problem changing the formation in-match to accomplish this (see the Salzburg vs Liverpool UCL match, where he shifted formation to counter Liverpool's buildup, and it spurred their comeback). He's used 3131, 4222,442 diamond, and variations of the 4141/433 hybrid.
    Yes, Jesse Marsch *tends* to play more directly. He is not concerned about possession. But that's because he believes in using what Germans call, "The Intentionally misplaced pass," as a press trigger. Balls are played in predictable areas of the pitch to force the opposition (should they win that ball) to play straight into the pressing trap. And to do so without the advantages of having an organized build-up, since the most dangerous time for any team in possession is the first 6 seconds after the ball is won.
    Jesse Marsch, in numerous interviews, admitted he was playing pragmatically at the end of last season. That there were elements of his play that the time constraints and realities of the situation he inherited meant he had to sacrifice for the sake of present efficiency and simplicity.
    Finally, I would say that you oversimplified Leeds' statements about the similarities between Bielsa and Marsch. They clearly stated that Marsch was not a Man v Man press advocate. And made the statements of their similarities primarily around the value of youth development and proactive, positive play. Those were the areas Marsch himself highlighted when asked in interviews on the subject.

      Agree with everything you said but developing youth for Bielsa? Don’t get me wrong he transformed Phillips, Dallas, Harrison etc. But he still went with Roberts over Gelhardt, Forshaw over Bate etc. Not to mention the Drameh situation.. Marsch is a bit more youth protected IMO

      @@jameslarkin327 Rubbish. I can't even be bothered to list the youth players that Bielsa played this season because you'd say 'that was because of injury'. You'd be right but you'd still miss the point.

    • @mrb7094
      @mrb7094 Před 2 lety +3

      The video analysis is spot on. I'm not quite sure I see the pragmatism you do. He was playing Rapha as a right back, to allow him width, for a number of crucial games, totally blunting his offensive qualities (he plays on the right of a front three for Brazil for Pete's Sake!!!).
      Marsch stopped doing that in the last game to some extent (Rapha was still asked to play inside) but it was sacrificing an obvious offensive weapon on the altar of his tactical system. I don't happen to like this narrow formation. It's gegenpressing just as it's going out of style. If you want to see a true pragmatist have look at Klopp and his stylistic evolution.
      Anyhow, as a Leeds fan I hope he is successful. I just have my doubts. Nice fella though.

  • @davemurphy9468
    @davemurphy9468 Před 2 lety +170

    In the last 2 games, Marsch went away from the Redbull 4-2-2-2 to more of a 4-1-4-1, using Harrison and Raphinha as more orthodox wingers. This also helped defensively, because with the narrow formation your fullbacks are not going to get much help from the wingers and the fullbacks need to be a lot better than ours are.

    • @otto_jk
      @otto_jk Před 2 lety +13

      @@otto_jk Quantity doesn't equal quality. Ayling and Dallas, got promoted with us 2 years ago. Ayling is solid, without being outstanding. Dallas has a long term injury, which leaves question marks over his future. Drameh is young, looked really good on loan at Cardiff. But has at least 2 in front of him in the pecking order, and looks thoroughly pissed off. Koch filled in at RB after Ayling's red card for the last 2 games and looked OK. Shackleton was a midfielder filling in at RB and looked lost at times. The only real option at LB was Firpo, who pretty much got thrown into the deep end. Having to learn a pretty much unique defensive system against some of the best players in the world. Because there was really no other options, he got hung out to dry week after week. New signing Kristensen looks good, so hopefully that's RB. They just have to work out what to do at LB.

    I think anyone coming in to replace a legendary figure was always going to have every single element of themselves hyper analysed and picked apart in real minute detail. I've heard people saying that he's terrible at his job and should even have been fired so soon after starting because everything hasn't instantly become fantastic.

    worth noting that a major reason leeds stayed up was marsch's willingness to be flexible on this ideal of centrality - that last two games saw Raphinha and Harrison playing much wider than he'd been trying previously. Don't think it's a conincidence that they were probably the two best attacking performances of the 12 games he had.

    • @cockoffgewgle4993
      @cockoffgewgle4993 Před 2 lety +5

      The best performances (Villa aside) were immediately after Bielsa went. When we played Bielsa ball, without the man marking and had the famed new manager bounce. Leicester and Wolves. It's been a steady decline since.
      He got incredibly lucky in the last game at Brentford. They went down to NINE men and equalised with ten men. Then we scored a winner deflected from 25 yards. He parked the bus with 25 minutes to go, went 5 at the back. We completely surrendered the ball and invited them onto us. Awful performance. Had Brentford not lost 2 players we'd have likely lost the game. Even when they went down to 9 we struggled to keep the ball and get on top.

      You are missing the fact that the whole team was knackered last season due to Bielsa ball. Go back and watch videos of the last two seasons. The previous season we were out running everyone. Last season from the very first game, we were being out run. Bielsa only has one method of playing and when the other teams wise up to his methods, he didn't have a plan b. He did extremely well getting us out of the championship, but he was also taking us straight back down. Keeping selecting Roberts and having a tiny squad was criminally negligent. Jesse inherited a team full of injuries and players not up to premiership level. Next season with the new players is when he should be judged. My money is on him doing a better job than Bielsa.

    Interesting breakdown. In a way, it almost makes me even more excited for what Brendan Aaronson can bring to Leeds next season. He plays as an 8/10 for Salzburg but usually as a winger for the USMNT. So I think that experience of both positions (and his previous experience with Jesse) will make him a perfect add to the 4/triple 2 system and this concept of “wingers” who also play centrally, if Leeds continue to go like that.

    As far as what to look for going forward, Marsch does prefer narrowness and more direct, vertical play from his attackers. However, the analyst neglected to mention that fullbacks in his system are expected to supply the width in place of wingers.

    With Marsch's name in contention for the Celtic job after Ange's inevitable departure, this was helpful John. Does make me think how our current squad would adapt to this from high and wide wingers with inverting fullbacks though. The back line decides itself, because the system is so narrow it makes me wonder how the likes of Maeda, Jota and Abada would fair 🤷‍♂

    • @NihilistCrab
      @NihilistCrab Před 2 lety +1

      It was better earlier in the season before the injuries got completely out of hand but in the later stages...
      From goal kicks, we had no outlet. Any time we played it to the cb's, the midfielders were usually already closely marked and not moving to pick up the ball - they were either totally static or likely to lose possession almost immediately (or both in Rodrigo's case), we had no players willing or capable of challenging for the ball in the air in the centre of the pitch - so pumping it wide was arguably the best option (which didn't work either).
      As for the fullbacks, they had the same problem as the cb's with the lack of movement in the middle of the pitch - just no passing options and they'd usually lose possession attempting to run forwards on their own.
      It looked shambolic and clueless - you could tell Meslier was pretty frustrated by the lack of options.
      Ideally we'll play out from the back but have a less broken/crap set of midfielders to use as well as a ST a bit taller than Dan James to provide options.

    Imagine that, Leeds lost 3 games at the end to City, Chelsea, an Arsenal…huge shock those results were 🤦‍♂️!! Hey and imagine that, Marsch had to continually adapt before games and during games to scrape Leeds out of regulation. With players that he doesn’t prefer in talent and skill he had to do whatever he could to squeeze every last point out of the remaining games.
    Marsch had a terrible roster of players and that was proved so many times throughout the season but these are the players Bielsa wanted along w/ his terrible decision to keep a small squad.

    Marsch took 15 points from 12 games. 1.25 points per game over 38 game season would be 47.5 points. Bielsa 23 points over 26 games. .88 points a game and a lovely 34 points and likely trip down to the Championship League. Maybe Marsch got lucky, maybe his tactics might leave a few fans desiring something different, but he got results when the other guy seemed to bury his head in the sand and avoid the challenge. Now I'm hearing talks that they want him to take over for Southgate. Good luck with that!

    How many times did Leeds actually play 4-2-2-2 under Marsch? It wasn't very often at all - he probably played the 3-4-3 that he tried a few times more often! 4-2-3-1 (Marsch's champions league formation of choice) and 4-1-4-1 were featured more than the 4-2-2-2....Really this is a lot of work for the lazy trop of Marsch plays 4-2-2-2 without paying attention to how Leeds actually played. The only thing that might have been right is the narrowness of the attack, which he also abandoned for the last 2 games

Sure, there are differences, but consider how hard it was to replace Bielsa - you can't find a carbon copy of him, you have to find a manager that will relate on some things, and try to evolve in a new direction on other things
