    Hey Duncan! The shape you're looking for, for a globe or a dome, is more correctly a 'gore' - if you look up 'globe gores', or 'sinusoidal interrupted' projections, you can see that each segment (gore) bulges rather than has straight edges. I hope that helps! (Thank you so much for the tutorials - it's so lovely to see you both back making them.)

    Duncan, OMG - that is the book I was talking about with the spinning globe!!! How awesome is that??! WOW - seeing that book live I can now see the scale of it - that is a HUGE book! I had no idea - it looks like it's 12" x 12" (30cm x 30cm)! But the effect is spectacular. I can see one would need to carefully plan using a globe like this - once the book is open there is a lot of flat real estate on the pages that needs to be covered. Yikes! The globe lends itself to a space book because you just put the cosmos on the page - I'll have to have a think about how I might use this thing in my journal - because now I have to think about the size of it as well. I don't understand how the globe actually pop up since it's not anchored to any page - I wonder what mechanism inside allows it to pull open. Anyway, lovely to see it here. And what a great tutorial - loved seeing your construction with the tabbed segments. Just saw the video where Matthew did smooth segments, so it's great to see that there's more than one way to skin a cat. And tabbed might suit one book while smooth might suit another. I'm racked to the back teeth, really chuffed (happy!) about all these dome/globe popups. Your laughing made me laugh. I think you did a great job. Now off to practice these new techniques and see what, if anything, I can make of them!

    Thanks for this video! I have your book, and it is sort of nice to see that even a professional struggles sometimes. Between this and the comment from Amanda Jeffrey I was able to make a near perfect dome. I doubt that you use Illustrator, but if you do I have a great trick for finding the right shaped gore. I made a 5" circle in Illustrator (thinking that would yield a 5" diameter dome, more about that later). Then reduce the width to .8 (5/Pi/2). Change the end points to corner points instead of smooth points and that makes the perfect gore shape. Then you can add the divisions and tabs, then copy at 60 degree angles.
    It only yielded about a 3 1/4" diameter dome because 5/Pi*2 = 3.18. And that is how far apart you need to place the tabs on the page. I also messed up the tabs around the "equator" because these have to slide a lot when the dome is pressed flat. I need to make them longer and the correct angle to allow that.

    Thanks for making these awesome videos! I've been really inspired to learn more about popup and try out different things!
    After seeing this video this afternoon I, got excited and worked out what the "curved" net for a real sphere would look like. I think it does end up looking a little rounder than the easy-to-sketch template in this video. I made a net as an SVG you can print out, but it seems like CZcams doesn't like me sharing a link to my website in a comment.

      I'm not sure what shape you need! Maybe Tutorial 14? or 13? or the two combined might work for you. Remember, you can make a solid shape and then cut large parts of it away and it will still stand up.

    Hello, and thank you so much for your channel and your tutorial… They are fascinating and really inspiring ! You make popup technique nearly easy (I said nearly…)
    Just to check : your dome is on a 4,5 cm radius circle. I suppose is about 4,5 cm high ?
    I want to make an igloo using this dome technique. But I would like it bigger, so I will play with the proportions of your tutorial (and make a little rule of 3…). But is there a way to calculate the height of the arches, and should I keep the angles of 10° and 25°?
    Anyway, I will try, just to check if it's Painfull to make… 😉

    • @thepop-upchannel4919
      @thepop-upchannel4919  Před rokem

      It is quite painful to make! Easier is probably the dome shown in tutorial 61. On this one ,es it is about 4.5 cm high. I was thinking about the angles on this recently (!), I think in theory maybe the angles should be 30 degrees not 25. Always need to experiment though.

      @@thepop-upchannel4919 Thank you for your answer !… I tried both (painful… you're right), but it looks more like a shell than an igloo… So I am trying with a system of severall automatic pull strip, as shown in tutorial 16. Well, it's not a "full form", but it can make the job… Thank you again !
