You're overlooking something vital by the fact Netflix contacted you and let you released an early review. By doing this, it means that Netflix see's you as a legitimate reviewer. They only usually give early access to people they acknowledge as a reviewer, so take that accomplishment with pride :)
Eh, he's legit whether Netflix says he is or not. The fact that he makes good money off these videos is really the only legitimacy he needs, as Netflix isn't the best judge of artistic integrity, but I get what you're saying about external validation. That being said, he probably has a target audience in the main demographic they're looking to market to. I might give the show a shot too; Alex seems to have pretty good taste.
Also, makes sense that theyd give him access to it 2 weeks prior given that it takes roughly a month to produce one of his reviews (because if the animation).
@@imbatgirl Netflix is pretty good about giving screeners to critics several weeks before the launch of new shows.
Anyone with over 2 million subscribers will get attention
The fact someone has been helped by netflix only means his review can be compromised do you think netflix would give him early access again if he gave this a terrible review? Let's hope he is honest
I feel like netflix gave him the show earlier just because they were proud of it and they wanted to be like "seeee we can make a decent show"
totally lmao... it's a hit this time (they hit it too w/ teenage bounty hunters)
IT WAS RUBBISH.
it wasn’t even good tho lmao, the SOC plot line was the only redeemable quality

@@trilynn9202 I have family members that are obsessed but it just doesn't seem to pull me in really :/
I like Alina and Mal, but I've gotta say, the subplot with Kaz, Jesper and Inej absolutely carried the show for me
Me too ! I enjoyed the show but tbh Idk about the books but I found alina kinda childish and predictable and weak in the show, like there was so much potential she didn't use which was frustrating at times while Kaz and his crew was definitely awesome and getting shit done !
@@venecianita5013 I haven't read the books either and I feel like she was way too naive. I feel she would have had a bit of streetsmart and we had evidence she stood up for herself, like punching the quartermaster for calling her a name etc. She was also a bit too trusting of everyone at the Little Palace considering she didn't trust many people at the orphanage.
Does she ever find out Alexei, her mapmaking friend, was the one to betray her and give up her name??
Literally- I haven’t read shadow and bones but did read six of crows and ck so I think that’s probably why I was more biased to kaz and the crew 😂 but honestly they were the only reason why I was so interested in the show
@@venecianita5013 I recently finished reading the Trilogy and the show kinda does the book justice in regards to Alina's personality. At the beginning of the story Alina is kinda "dumb" and childish but she develops more as the story moves on. I hope Netflix doesn't fuck up this element.
@@tanah6962 To answer your question, in the books, Alexei is actually one of the only people to die on the skiff in the Fold. He is carried away by the Volcra, never to be seen again.
The chapter ends when Alina has her sudden burst of light. It kills the Volcra and she is dropped onto the deck and passes out.
Honestly bro it was such a good show I’m just so fearful that they’re gonna cancel it for kissing booth 10

It is really mind blowing that Netflix gave Alex an early access when His content is spoiling/making fun of these shows.
They get a lot of watches with if tho
After seeing this, I wanna watch the show now 😂
They just want views. Doesn't matter if people watch it because they're interested or they're just curious about how ridiculous it is.
He's only allowed to show the first episode. That's like 10% of book 1. Plenty left unspoiled.
Any publicity is good publicity. Always. The important thing is to get someone talking about your show so that when people scroll down the list they will go 'oh, that name kinda rings a bell... let's try this'. What they actually say / spoil isn't important. A lot of big hits from the past decades came from lots of people saying it sucked and other people going 'is it really that bad? I'm gonna check it out, then' (Twilight, Fifty shades, After...). Actually it can be argued that easy targets for criticism are good investment in the youtube era: it's easier to make a video which will get views by making fun / ranting about something than by praising it, so more content makers will target the 'worse' show / movie on the market which will only increase its popularity, which in turn will motivate more people to review it (or criticize previous reviews of it...).
Alex: gets an offer from Netflix to review a show
Also Alex: Gets the video sponsored by another company
Not just any company, but a direct competitor (amazon/prime video) LOL
@@AbaDDon-vu4ob 🤣🤣🤣
I appreciate the hustle
Netflix don't pay him to review, they're doing it for publicity. In case this was a video game, it'll be close to sponsorship, but since they don't don't sell shows seperately, it's kind of useless for him to get the show early and so he needs to get someone to pay up. I guess Netflix could pay, but maybe they didn't
Plot twist: Netflix owns Audible.
My man rlly just called the crows "some businessmen" and moved on 😔
i was like,, my gost won't associate with your ghost,,
Perfect definition of the crows is businessmen. They’re literal thieves this is hilarious.
Wait why were Kaz, Inej and Jesper in the shadow and bone Netflix show in the first place? like they never were written into the shadow and bone books which take place way before the six of crows books.
@@lightningblue4498 yea it was basically just to give six of crows fans a reason to tune in I think, so they kinda just slapped the crows in there at random. In that sense it doesn't follow the books exactly, but I kinda liked it--plus, it looks like they're saving the main plot of the soc duology for after the grisha trilogy wraps up in the show 🙏
I know I came back to watch his review again after falling in love with the Crows and reading their books, and forgot he only mentioned them in one sentence 🤣

don't give netflix the credit for the worldbuilding, bc that was all leigh bardugo and her books
I think maybe he just meant the cgi/other effects used for the setting
its the production team who bust their butt off to make the world seems realistic and alive. All the sets and props are very detailed, just look at the scenes at Ketterdam, they actually custom made all the label to the bottles in the background to look the part. They also made. a whole ass language (old Rafkan) thats actually usable and learnable. Not to mention the stellar CGI that must have costs a ton since its better quality than something they use for The Witcher or Stranger Things (or other fantasy netflix shows).
Obviously Leigh deserves credits as well, but the show is so much more than just her writing.
Adding on to this, they had to adapt the world-building you get in the narration in the books and make it visual for an audience that had potentially not read the books. I think they did a decent job but it was nowhere near as comprehensible as the books because they simply didn't have (or didn't give it) the time and scope it has on the page. The books were basically the concept art that the showrunners had to make sense of for a television audience.
What an absurd comment, it's like saying "don't give HBO credit for creating a world that was already written"
Um what about giving the credits to anyones who worked on that show?
It is -I like Alina and Mal so much better in the netflix series compared to their original book couterparts? AND they gave the Darkling a personality

The way you ignored the crows😭 And why would you run from Zoya, she can literally do anything to me🛐
I’m ready for this show to become my entire personality on Friday
YESSS
I'm ready for this show to become my entire personality for the rest of my life
@Axiliea Carter hi!
omg literally me
hi cait!!
I appreciate that they're addressing Alina's race. in the books she's white but her being Asian makes total sense also, because she's from a village that's close to the border to Shu Han (which is sorta China sorta Asia in general) and the borders there are always shifting so it makes sense that the population there is more diverse. so I love the fact that they're actually ADDRESING it. a lot of times when adaptations cast POC actors for parts that were "supposed to be" white, they don't address it. so props to the show.
Yes! I imagine that because Shadow and Bone was her first big series the author just went with what was comfortable/expected for her, but you can tell she regretted it. She really went off with diversity in Six of Crows and that's great!! The race change for Alina makes canonical sense and adds to it instead of taking away. It's the proper way of adding diversity instead of like... She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named...
I totally agree with that but also they made the choice just to add racism to the show where it had never been there in the books
@@arianna3287 they just decided to have an asian lead, i don't see what's racist about that. and of course they adress the fact that she's half-shu in the show, racism exists in that universe too. And in this case it's to show how alina also struggles with it, like many other people who'll watch this and feel more represented.
While I agree, me actually being Russian and named Alina, It would have been really cool to see a Russian actress in this role or just me. Lol. I really pictured myself when I read the books. But obviously it's because we have the same name and same uprininging. Fun fact, Alina means bearer of light
@@popstar2011ify oh i see what they did there
I was surprised by the quality of this series. The production value is great as well.
THIS IS GOOD. YOU DID NOT DISRESPECT SHADOW AND BONE!

@@kuroneko5390 they are just superior
I felt he show was okay, I did like that the world is Russian and Eastern European inspired compared to the most commonly used western high fantasy or nordic influences. But I just felt underwhelmed by the overall story because I could see every major plot point from a mile away even before any intentional foreshadowing it just followed so many tropes. It felt like I had seen the story 18 times before just with different names and backgrounds. Overall it was visually stunning and fun to watch a new and fresh universe, but I wanted so much more from it
as a book reader it gets wild-😶 plenty of twists coming
I‘m surprised how you didn’t notice the resemblance between Mal and the guy from the „After“ movies😂😂😂😂
Is anyone else freaking out at the fact thank PRINCE FREAKING CASPIAN is in this, no, just me, cool cool cool
I knew I recognized him.
None of my roommates understood the yelling throughout episode one of this show. PRINCE FREAKING CASPIAN......OMG. I should get new roommates.

SAME
When you're submitting a script/project like that they ask you to include a tagline that sometimes goes along the lines of "x thing you're familiar with" plus "other thing you're familiar with" in "x location". Like the movie Alien was presented as "Jaws in SPACE" even though they're completely different movies. I wouldn't worry too much. It's just a way to give someone an idea of what you're going for using examples they might be familiar with. It doesn't mean that it's going to be exactly like what you're describing. It's mainly done to sell the story idea to producers/distributers who mainly care about money - so they want to play it safe and cling to stuff that the public already knows and likes.
It's what you use when you're presenting a pitch. I've had to write a tagline for a script adaptation I had to submit and I honestly didn't feel like it truly reflected what the story was about.
it's dumb and cliche most of the time, but you simply cannot deny this approach is actually useful!
I don't take their descriptions literally, it really is just there to give a sense of the vibe, not an actual synopsis.
For example, long ago I was sold into reading a manga called The Promised Neverland, being told "it's like Attack on Titan meets Death Note", and in case you're not exactly familiar with those titles, it really was just like what that person described, I knew it wouldn't be EXACTLY those two shows mashed up, it's just the vibes combined, and the vibes indeed were there.
My point is, it could actually be useful, regardless of any company schemes, to give a description like that from a consumer standpoint. I wanna have *some* idea about what I'm going into, because sometimes a synopsis can either be too telling or not telling at all...... just my opinion tho xP
Didnt bother me. I’ve described this show as hunger games meet oceans 11 to my friends. That’s how I got my sister to start reading the books!
That description was dumber than Mal’s tattoo
as someone who is a DIEHARD six of crows fans, i LOVE this show
IF ALEX SAID ITS PRETTY GREAT. THAT MEANS IT'S ACTUALLY AMAZING. He's not lying the book is absolutely amazing and the show really captured and brought it to life! Everything is pretty spot on! As a big fan of the book for a couple years already I was shook when Netflix said they are coming out with it. This book is also a series so I recommend reading the others ones as well! I know I will be :)
Me: *worried about spoilers*
Also me: I have literally read all of the books what is wrong with me
relatable
If they mixed the trilogy and the duology (as it seems from the crows part showed here) probably there will be some differences from the books, hence possible spoilers? I would have preferred they didn't do that, since the two stories have nothing in common .-.
@@biancacamillagambrioli5830 Way I like to see these things is as a 3rd thing to enjoy. Loved the trigoly, loved the duology, I don't need how I imagined the story when I read the books to be put on the screen, I'm excited to enjoy a new story with elements I already loved. It makes adaptations so much more enjoyable. :p But I do get your side of things as well. Got high hopes though!
@@esmee6308 yes I usually enjoy when adaptations are different (like I loved what they made with the Witcher, the books the game and the series are wildly different but I love all three of them), but in this case it feels weird to me since the themes, tones and even narrative structures are so unrelated... it just seems something done for marketing reasons, since six of crows is much more popular but it's pretty short for a tv show. These are just my doubts, but I don't want to judge before watching, which I'm very curious to do!
@@esmee6308 i agree. I like my adaptations to do something different, if they make it work. Sometimes it doesn't pan out but I'm not gonna watch something that I know everything about and it stays pretty much the same

I absolutely loved Shadow and Bone! One of the best fantasy shows I've seen.
I think the second season was a great follow-up, deserves a separate video
It felt a little rushed to me, but I guess with only 8 episodes (I felt like 12-15 episodes would've been better), and no guarantee of a renewal, they needed to give it some sense of finality.
The fact that Alex thinks Shadow and Bone is “pretty great” must mean it’s actually extremely good
Edit: OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THE LIKES!!

i really enjoyed the series! It was unapologetically YA and very fun. The world building was a bit vague but I think it will be expanded upon better in the next season (if there is one). I'm pretty terrible at guessing what happens next, I kept predicting things wrong so I completely missed one of the pitfalls other people found with it. Overall: really fun! The Crows were my favourite and they all had such great chemistry. Jesper is my favourite character and I HOPE they give us a season 2, at least so i can see him again. Great video Alex! Congrats!

True, I used to ignore Anne with an E because I've seen a clip of it and thought the main girl kinda acts in an exaggerated way, but when he made a video about it I checked it out and damn it was the best series I watched in Netflix.
