  • So I've been driving around in my new Volvo XC60 for a few months now. As great is it is to drive, there's still just a little touch of troubleshooting that's needed before all is working perfectly. I head to my local Volvo dealership - Volvo Cars North London - to see if the little flaws can be ironed out.

    That sim card design is really stupid, seems like dropping it would be really easy to do, as demonstrated by your staff.

    • @Meekerextreme
      @Meekerextreme Před 6 lety +9

      Yup, older people without nimble hands I could see it happening a lot. But then again how many older people will be bothering with a sim card and internet.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 Před 6 lety +4

      I would say that one is too many. Easily sorted though, just by a tiny modification in the trim design. Now that it has been highlighted, I'm sure it will be an early production modification. If anyone else is concerned and they have such a car, a small piece of black duct tape will block the hole off to stop the possibility of the SIM card from dropping down the hole.

    • @daskurka

      Just dropped the sim card into the abyss 1 hour ago, currently googling for solutions, yeah this is a stupid design, should have googled more before doing it. ANYONE ABOUT TO DO THIS PUT DUCT TAPE OVER THE HOLE FIRST!

    • @DeadlyDan
      @DeadlyDan Před 6 lety +11

      It is actually the most logical thing, they could have easily had it in a stock configuration, one command could have enabled the option easily. When you drive a car you become so accustomed to everything about it, the interfaces, the drive, the quirks.
      I really doubt Mat missed that option. You could also say the dealer looked uncomfortable reacting to it. Never trust dealers.

    A reason to the folding mirrors not working before could of been due to a transit/dome/accessory fuse not being installed in the pre delivery inspection stage at the dealership. Where I work, every car has 2/3 fuses needing to be installed.

      Yup, tar remover has to be removed within minutes. And if it does dry on the trim you don't have to replace it like this guy. Polishing does the trick, i worked at a VW dealership and did detailing on several cars with the same problem. Chrome will almost look like new again. I'm sure wetsanding with a high grit will work too.

    I've driven their new S90 test drive cars in Stockholm 6 months ago and I found some faulty options in the car.. That's why I bought the merc E Class.
    And one thing that's very upsetting, volvo was needed 6-8 months to deliver the car if you customize the options. In the meanwhile I got my merc for just only 4 months with all the options I wanted, delivered from Germany. I live in Stockholm btw..

    I reckon that traffic film remover had been used in slightly higher concentration than normal and been allowed to dry for a while on that chrome-like trim, and possibly a bit on the door trim in front of it. Probably when it was washed prior to customer delivery.

    If there's a design flaw meaning a piece of trim takes twice as long to fit as it should do then why should the customer foot the bill for the extra time? (Appreciate in this case it's a warranty job).

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 Před 6 lety

      Out of warranty, the customer pays for however long a job takes. Nobody else pays. Its the customer's car, not the dealer's or Volvo's. That's how it is in the real world.

    • @macbitz
      @macbitz Před 6 lety

      Yes, the man on the street earning a wage pays for everything in the long run - doesn't mean you have to like it.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 Před 6 lety

      Everybody seems to think that they are entitled to free stuff these days and always wants someone else to be responsible. Nobody likes paying for anything, including running their cars, but nobody is going to take the financial burden over for them.

    • @macbitz
      @macbitz Před 6 lety

      I certainly don't feel 'entitled' to free stuff and I am quite happy to pay for the maintenance of my car. The point I was making is that paying for other's mistakes is not entirely palatable, and that's in light of the comment made by Matt in the video that if something takes twice as long as it should through no fault on the customer's part, very often it's still the customer who pays.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 Před 6 lety

      I'm sure that if you did the job it would be done on time every time and if you did encounter problems you would certainly not charge the customer for the time you actually spent sorting it out. [note that this post uses sarcasm to make the point]

    In some cars, not specifically this one. Most of the tech addons such as CarPlay are already pre-installed on these cars but just need to be activated. I wonder if its the same with these folding door mirrors as in the video you stated that the car went back to volvo and they did something with the software. The CarPlay thing is definitely true on some Mercedes models as you can buy the activation parts on the internet for less than the price of the addon when you purchase the car.

    0:20, I'm almost willing to bet that it's due to the factory line that makes that trim, had some kind of chemical (possibly) accidentally sprayed on it and after some additional processes it stayed on it. I'm almost certain that all the models that came from the same line/got sprayed from the same machine will have this.

    Not all Volvo owners are treated the same way by the dealerships or even volvo HQ. My new volvo bought in Morocco and when the windshield cracked, I took it to volvo shop to replace it. They did a lousy job and consequently 1- the frame around the windshield started to rust apparently they used a sharp object to remove the hardened original glue 2- the rain sensor not working anymore and 3- the fitting inside the car on top of the windshield is rattling making an unbearable noise. The dealership doesn't want to take responsibility and fix the problem and when I contacted volvo HQ they did nothing for me. A rusty brand new volvo that's what I ended up with.

      Reso205 We need 2 numbers here to get a statistic; how many cars came back, and how many cars didn't come back (total number of cars sold, minus the ones which come back). Then a reliability record can be accurately calculated, and compared to other manufacturers doing the same to see if Volvo is above, below, or on par with their competitors. Without this it's just hearsay

    My friend has an audi a8 from 2016 he has the same problem with the trim being oxidized. It all showed up as a result of the washing liquid being used at the car wash.

    Window has to come out to fit the chrome properly. Or in many cases on different makes it chromes don't come separately like it did on the Volvo and you have to replace the whole window

    Matt I've got a simple question, to me it appears that car which come into England have far more problems and they're less reliable. Would this have anything to do with the Laws there being less strict on manufacturers or do the people not care as much in general about the quality of their vehicles?

    Easy to find out if they did a software/firmware update (and are denying it). Plug in a ODB reader and relevant software - should show when it was last updated.

    1 - should have left that trim on, it's called patina. 2 - the folding mirrors on my 2001 S60 still work perfectly. :-)

    Not at all surprised that you are already had problems, I had a XC90 which was good looking inside and out but was the most unreliable and underdeveloped car I I have ever owned. I had constant problems, and yes, it started corrode ( filiform corrosion of external finishers) after only a few weeks.
    I now have a Range Rover sport which should be unreliable according to everything you read, but it had been faultless so far ( 25 k miles ) and feels so much moe dependable than the Volvo which entertained with" fault of the day"
    Mat - keep the reports coming, you will have plenty more to report on - you will have amber and red engine management Christmas warning lights soon!

      @hedydd2 Před 6 lety +7

      Not necessarily. It is most likely to be caused by strong TFR used while washing and allowed to dry and causing tarnish.

      Tbh, it looks like water marks/tarnish, every car I've had with brightwork on the sils has gone like this...heck, even the the black 'night pack' trim on our E350 Estate goes tarnished, just cannot be bothered buffing it 2hrs a day!

  • @jjsalldat09
    @jjsalldat09 Před 5 lety

    @Matt. I never usually comment; however, I wanted to assure you that you are not an idiot. I was having a lot of issues with my 2018 XC90 after purchasing it. Apparently, my car was not connecting to the internet and would not update itself. So I could not change or access multiple setting similar to your issue. After taking it to the dealer, I felt as though I got back a new car as the software was quite different and updated once they got my car to connect. Also, one time while driving in Myrtle beach with family. I let my father borrow my car and gave him a key after connecting it to a profile I made for him. When we switched who was driving I tried to change the profile and somehow froze up the computer and I could not do anything on my screen. Furthermore, the car changed to metric, while I am used to the American standard and the car stayed like that all day. Thus, I was very worried about getting a ticket from my inproper KPH to MPH estimates.

    The problem with the chrome molding goes as far back as 2006. My S80 has those nasty water spots all over the chrome molding. This is nothing new for Volvo.
