What I love about this movie is Daniel is not generic at all. He’s 16, he’s impulsive , he’s confident he can talk to girls , he’s athletic too which is a combo . He’s funny , he can tell jokes but he still comes off as a sweet kid .
Pat Morita insisted on Miyagi's backstory including him fighting in the Japanese American regiment while his family was interned in the American concentration camp. Morita was sent to live in the internment camp at eleven, his family was already there, he would have been there years earlier but he was getting spinal surgery and relearning how to walk. He never stopped making sure these stories were told.

The Regiment that Mr. Miyagi served in was the most decorated Regiment for its size and length of service in US History.
I love this. It really shows how Miyagi could have turned out completely different. He could have become bitter, resentful and full of hate, but instead he's at peace with himself and his life

The scene that reveals what happened to Miyagi's wife and son is one of the hardest things I have ever watched. Heartbreaking.
The one thing the remake did right and in some ways handled better than the og was recapture the unexpected heavy sadness type grounding scene for the teacher and its aftermath which in the first film is of course of miyagi drunk on the anniversary of his wife and kid dying which is sad and acted well and hits harder but is just reveling in its saddness for a bit too long not really having a purpose other than to be sad and give miyagi some depth.... and in the remake on the other hand is with jackie chun crying in the car on the anniversary of their death and having his student teach him to stand back up.... daniel kinda ignores miyagi's issues which makes him seem like a jerk and not deserving of a car imo...if he helped miyagi through his trauma I would be more OK with him accepting and getting the car...the remake had the kid help his sensei and thus I felt handled that scenario better and made it an equal beneficial relationship and more healthy than in the og...now the sequel has daniel speak to miyagi after his father's death and that scene is great but I wish they did that in the first film..ironic how both films have cars in them play a big scenery role...hu...
My grandma was from Saitama and spoke just like Miyagi, I watched it for the first time since I was a kid a few years ago and about 15 years after her death, I bawled my eyes out. I love watching this to hear her tone and inflections
Miyagi is essentially a surrogate for Daniel's deceased father, and Daniel becomes the son that Miyagi lost. That's really the emotional core of the story.
Unlike most movies like this, it legitimately looks like (and definitely sounded like) Daniel got his @$$ kicked and was in pain, so he definitely earned it, even when he uses the Crane Kick, he kicks, lands on his bad leg, then immediately switch

You may not have picked up on it, but the first time Daniel walked into Cobra Kai, he sees a picture of Kreese in his uniform. That was a common thing in 80's movies to imply the character served in Vietnam, and that's their whole back story. They're either completely broken because of Nam or they're a "no mercy" wacko because of Nam. They don't come right out and say that that was where Kreese served, but that was the big neon sign in an 80's movie "something's not right here."
I'm 43 and first saw this at the drive in. It makes my heart melt to see young people enjoy the film all these years later. Karate Kid has held up.

Honestly,seeing all of the pieces come together when Mr. Miyagi shows Daniel what "SAND THE FLOOR" is supposed to be teaching him.
Pure Cinematic Genius and one the many reasons Mr Miyagi is remembered to this day as such a great Teacher.
Yeah he was teaching Daniel how to block in a way to make it like instinct, Subliminally.
The purpose of Daniel doing chores in a particular way was to create muscle memory. When you repeat an action over and over again, you begin to do it without thinking about it. Like driving.
Especially as he has 12 weeks to prepare, against cobra kai guys, who probably would have trained weekly for 4 years
Yeah I think they did an excellent job showing that in the remake because so many people question it in this movie. In the remake, it's with the picking up/putting on/hanging jacket exercise
Daniel wanted to let Myagi sleep it off after finding him drunk, and also mourn the anniversary of his wife; which is why the following day you see Daniel training by himself.
Also, even though Myagi had passed out, you see Daniel bow as he exists the home to show respect.
They truly were best friends and understood each other.
Miyagi was the Father figure Daniel needed, and Daniel was the son Miyagi never had.
I watched KK as a teanager back in the 80's and probably seen it since a million times and as now a 51 year old probably just enjoyed your reaction to it as much as when I saw it the 1st time. Great memories relived. Thanks

The relationship between Mr Myagi and Daniel is legitimate and very real.... while there are some magical elements to it, it doesn't take away anything... there is real emotion and feelings in these movies, which you don't always see in movies, then or now. It grows, works both ways, you can see the bond and see it grow (including in the second movie). It isn't a one way relationship either
I can't tell you how many times I tried the hand healing thing... and it does feel warm and good , just no healing
If you take away the stupid hand healing thing he feels real and moments like him stealing the black belt and drinking make miyagi feel real and like a relatable underdog...he's not perfect...but the healing stuff was weird of course...like he's a wizard smdh
The thing about cobra Kai is hearing this movie recounted from Johnny's POV was brilliant, and made this movie even better, with alot more depth to the issue of who's the good guy here?

An off topic film recommendation you guys might have already seen, the outsiders. Ralph plays in it too. A little younger then this maybe. Maybe a good one to look into, go up on some polls, or just watch it yourselves sometimes. The book is incredible as well.

Also something about the scene after the Halloween party when the Cobra Kais are beating Daniel down. The director/ writer said that during that beatdown, before Mr. Miyagi pushed Daniel out of the way, Johnny was really going to throw that flying jump kick with the intention of killing Daniel.
I always thought that kick was insane!! He literally breaks the sign behind Daniel’s head 😳 that totally would have killed him or at least caused some serious head trauma
That's a little why I'm afraid to check out the new Cobra Kai series, because if they glorify or apologize for Johnny in any way, like he was some sort of total victim because of his teacher, or like Daniel was the actual bad guy somehow for going out with Johnny's ex (or for any other reason), I would refer everyone to that Halloween party beat-down. Johnny had no mercy and he beat Daniel into unconsciousness in that scene. That was vicious.
You should definitely watch part 3 before you watch Cobra Kai, because it all ties in, especially with the upcoming season. And yes, Pat Morita was perfectly cast, he sadly passed away in 2005. Great reaction as always, cheers lads.

As a person who trained a bit of Ryuku Kempo, Pat Morita's performance here is pretty good. Because Ryuku badasses are, in fact, famous for being short, stocky, charming, and absolutely not to be messed with.

All the job Daniel did trained him physically too, especially tonifying his muscles. He worked hard. I think this is why Miyagi teaches him how to punch and attacking movements after this first phase of training.

You guys NEED to watch Kung Fu Hustle if you haven't already. The director and lead actor is world renown and the cast is star studded with legendary martial arts masters that worked with Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee themselves. It's one of the most hilarious yet heartfelt Hong Kong movies ever!!!!

The director and music conductor of Rocky were the same people that made Karate Kid.
"I haven't enjoyed a sports movie this much since the original Rocky." Not surprisingly, the same director(John Avildson) did both. He has a knack for bringing out the emotional side of things.
I think the wax on wax off scene sells it...daniels learns he can trust someone again....he should not doubt ali but he does cause she gets him hurt....he doesn't trust anyone and he realizes miyagi only had his best interest at heart and not to question him...that's such a vital scene people parody cause they don't get the meaning and how unique it was told...teen boy trusting a male figure can be huge for their future ..especially without pals or a dad...it's about life

I could literally see it in your eyes as the three of you were falling in love with him and it brought happy tears to my eyes. The persona that is Myagi is a leader, father figure, teacher, counselor, and best friend. ❤️

I don't know if ya'll caught the actual complexity of iyagi's backstory: He's from Okinawa. He immigrated to America where he enlisted and was deployed to...Okinawa. While he was serving in Okinawa, fighting as an American against his own people, his wife and child were interned and died in America. He also won the medal of honor for his servic ein Okinawa, for killing his own people.
Actually most Japanese American's fought in Europe, very few fought in the Pacific, the one's that did fight in the Pacific were used as translators mostly. The 442 was the most decorated fighting Battalion in all the war.
My brother rewound the ‘get him a body bag!’ scene so many times on our VHS copy that it just became a garbled mess at that scene. 😆

It's still cool watching this movie after all these years. It was shot in and around my lifetime neighborhood, so I'm very familiar with the different locations used and seeing now how much has changed. I hope you guys do the Cobra Kai series, it's really very good!

I admit I wasn't a big Karate Kid fan but after watching Cobra Kai I appreciate this movie more.
I saw an interview with Ralph Macchio and he said he and William Zabka had months of training and the kids in Cobra Kai have had only weeks. Some of their choreography the kids learn less than a week before they film. The characters all do 90% of their own fight scenes to make it more realistic.
Yes boys! So pleased you're watching these films, love how into it you all got. Go for Cobra Cai - it's basically filmed in the style of all three films, full of 80's style cheese, and with barely any modernisation - but in a good way!

I was 4 years old when this was released.
One of the greatest cinematic experiences i ever had.
The story hit home for so many of us kids, learning to be brave and having the right guidance to do so.
This movie got me into classical karate to study and later train in.
Knew of Pat Morita as an actor & comedian (Happy Days, Sanford & Son).
Such a great performance as Mr. Miyagi and him being nominated for an Oscar was the icing on the cake.
Karate Kid was actually the name of an DC character from the Teen Titans.
So the rights to the name had to be acquired in order to use it as the movie's name.
Btw, the remake from 2010 with Jaden Smith & Jackie Chan is just as good as the original.
Cobra Kai is the best follow up to a series since Star Trek: the Next Generation.

love how you guys are enjoying this movie. this franchise was a big part of my childhood! and being from Hawaii, the portrayal of Miyagi is spot-on. The 442nd was filled with asians from Hawaii, and I was fortunate enough to know a couple personally. you guys are great!
First time viewer here . the reason The Karate Kid had vibes of the original Rocky movie is that the director of The Karate Kid directed the original Rocky. The music for the tournament montage, that song was actually meant for Rocky 3. When you listen to the song and think about it, some of the lyrics don't fit The Karate Kid but fits more with the Rocky movies.
Okay, if you're looking for a good "sports movie" Slapshot is my recommendation. So funny as well as intense. And my grandfather acted in that film so it holds a special place for me.
Next Karate Kid. True fans of the series can not dismiss.

I'm so pleased you guys decided to do this. And one thing about you, UNLIKE A BOATLOAD OF REACTORS, you actually seem to want to appreciate, instead of diss, the movie. I'm so tired of reactors who second-guess the director or make stupid comments like, "...the special effects are better than I thought being that they were working with stone knives and bearskins..." Too many reactors think we want to see them make condescending jokes...I sure don't. I just like watching reactors watch the movie. It's a lot of fun watching you guys. Shoot, I'd love to have you over for sandwiches to watch a movie.
One thing I hate about this movie is the scene at which Daniel shows up again at the amusement park. His insecurity notwithstanding, I think this was a failure of the script, trying to add some more fake tension so it could be resolved. I mean, honestly, why was she upset at him? Last time she saw him he was splayed on the floor with spaghetti sauce all over him. What exactly did he do? Nothing. Then he shows up at the amusement park and she's mad. And that black-haired friend who chewed out Daniel? I can't stand that character. She had nothing but derision and condescension for him from the get-go. I've seen this movie 20 times and that scene is just out of place.
Thanks for the edit length. I love this movie and you didn't make it a chopped-up quickie. Enjoyed it. I wish you would've left in more of the scene at which Daniel gets upset after doing all the work at the house. You went right into Mr. Miyagi telling him how to use his moves. OK. But then you left out the payoff: "Come back tomorrow." It's fine. I've seen it. And I cry every time I see it.
It's nice to see you guys really appreciating the little things that make the movie a lesson in how to be. I am Japanese. My brothers and I were the only Japanese kids in a school with 500 kids in each grade. 1500 kids in 10, 11, and 12. There was also one Chinese family. There was a mix of all other ethnicities and colors, but just two Asian families. I was bullied all my life and I can give you a list of derogatory names for Asian people that would go off the page. (I used to get some of these bullies upset because they were idiots. I told one one time, "Hey, if you're going to call me a name, it's "Jap," not "Chink." I'm Japanese, can't you even get that straight?" They were speechless, and I just walked away."
That is why I love this movie. I know what it feels like to be bullied and people who say, "Oh, kids do what they will do," are full of it. Parents teach kids to be respectful, or they ignore their kids and the kids just go out on their own to become jerks, though some end up being good people. The hurt doesn't go away; you just tuck it away and don't think of it. This is why this movie is so wonderful.
So I had a great time and I really appreciated how you just watched to enjoy and appreciate. By the way, don't not watch III. If you do, you'll be depriving yourself of a long-awaited payoff that made me feel so good. II is different, but it doesn't deal with the Cobra Kais, and III does. You always mention II, but not III. I would recommend III. The bad guys are delicious and you would really enjoy the payoff (and I'm not talking tournament). That's all I'll say, but think about also watching III.
Pat Morita speaks perfect English. He is doing an impression of his father speaking English. Pat from California is more of a California boy than William Zap (johnny) from New York.
He was also using some of the speech inflections of his stunt double, legendary martial arts master Fumio Demura, as Demura was the inspiration for Mr. Miyagi.
Yep the choreography here is good. No over the top nonsense and pretty realistic, as you said, usually when a person gets a good hit on someone, that's pretty much it. Cobra Kai unfortunately gets unrealistic, think of the show more of a live action anime instead. I remember once when I was sparring, it was 2 on 2. My teammate thought I was the opposing team so I wasn't expecting it, she kicked me right into my chest/stomach, and I went flying. I couldn't breathe for like a good two minutes. The sensei was like What are you doing that's your teammate!!
The tournament had real schools participating in the background and real fighters. Johnny's last opponent for Daniel is actually the one who came up with the crane kick for the movie. As for the fight with Dutch, it was supposed to be a full blown fight, where Dutch actually tackles Daniel. It was removed, I believe because they didn't want to take away from it supposing to be Johnny and Daniel's conflict.
Anyways, KK2 and KK3 are a must. Next Karate Kid I think you should watch because why not, you're that far in, it's not long as the others, think of it more as a tv movie type deal, and it may come into play in the series.
I agree that if they do 2 and 3 that they should to Next, but they should be warned to take it with a grain of salt because it was not written or directed by the same people and many things Mr. Miyagi says in previous movies is walked back, (the biggest being Karate not coming from Buddhist temples, that was Shaolin Kung Fu, not Karate.)

Honestly I am really enjoying the stuff you guys say as you are watching this. Fun fact, one of the actors they originally wanted to play Mr. Miyagi was Toshiro Mifune who was best known for playing Samurai movies in Japan and he didn't like the humor. He thought Mr. Miyagi should be very serious. Where as Pat Marita was a comedian and his comedy chops really helped the character to humanize him and not make him a stereotype Karate Sensei. One thing I do have to say about the scene where Mr. Miyagi is "praying".... If you watch carefully after Daniel quietly leaves, Mr. Miyagi actually fell asleep while praying. his head dips just a little and you hear a very quiet snore. Just a subtly little piece that is a bit serious, and a little bit humorous.
Another fun fact, Chuck Norris was approached to be the John Kreese character. Chuck refused because he didn't want to represent karate instructors that way.

You guys have touched on this a lot in both this and other videos, but the main reason why The Karate Kid and so many 80s movies hold up even now is the DIALOGUE. I'm a broken record when it comes to this! LOL Phony dialogue will take me out of any movie, no matter how much it cost to make or what so-called great actors are in it. You said it, the dialogue in Karate Kid is simple yet natural and effective. The Daniel-Miyagi scenes and all of the stuff with Kreese, even minimal, is so engrossing and interesting. The Cobra Kai dojo confrontation is one of the best bits of the movie. Kreese is a scene-stealing villain. Just the way Martin Kove carried himself showed so much bravado. He's really scary. TBH, I couldn't care less about the romance parts of most movies now, so I low-key don't pay a lot of attention to the Daniel-Ali scenes now. But that "You're the Best" fighting montage has to be one of the most iconic montages in film history.

On the question of who is the more experienced/better actor, Ralph Macchio is/was the "old master," having been in numerous TV and movie productions. "The Karate Kid" was Pat Morita's first movie role, so who is the "better actor"?;)
imagine if they didn't tell Ralph Macchio that he was going to be dumped into the lake when standing on the boat... if it was Pat's and the director's and etc team's secret, hehe :D

Daniels bike is a 1984 Moongoose BMX cruser 24" wheels. you can find a Moongoose at Wal-Mart but you can't find that one. they sold out and started making junk.
I saw this film in the theatre with my older sister and younger brother, when I was just a little kid. And I confess, I walked away from it with a HUGE crush on Ralph Macchio. Maybe 10 to 15 years later, my sister and I saw Ralph perform onstage as the lead in a musical ("How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"), and partway through the show, my sister leaned over and whispered, "Still have crush on him?" I watched Ralph performing on stage for about a minute more, and then said, "Yeah... yeah, I do," and then -- when my sister started grinning at me like she was mocking me -- I followed it with "Shut up." (I was laughing, though.) LOL. I can't help it, though. He's adorable, and as you can see in this movie, so talented. He's great at being funny, and amazing at the super serious stuff too. I was just a little kid, but I had major heart eyes for him. I thought he was amazing.
Actually, I love this film so much, it's one of my favorite childhood films, so I'm a little afraid to watch Cobra Kai. I'm afraid they'll mess with the character Daniel, or wreck the feel of the original movie, or just mess with my fond memory of everything involved with the film. So -- anyone who has seen Cobra Kai -- is it something I should watch? Or will it wreck things for me?
Side note: if it hasn't been mentioned already (I didn't read through all 330+ comments yet, maybe just the first 25, lol) - the director of The Karate Kid is the same guy who directed Rocky. So, Nick's spot on that it has a very similar feel to it. It's very "underdog triumphs over his demons or against all odds" sort of vibe, and I love it. When I saw Karate Kid in the theatre, everyone was fully invested. They were laughing at everything, and at the end when Daniel kicks Johnny with the famous crane kick, the entire audience broke out into enormous applause. I was really young so I'd never been to see a film where anyone reacted that way before, it was like we were all in it together, just a surge of cheering and excitement and so happy for Daniel. It was fantastic. One of my fondest childhood memories, for sure. And it just goes to show what seeing a great film can do, which is why I love returning to these films with reactors like you, James, Ninetailedbrush and Nick. Thanks for watching this and loving it. (I was so afraid you wouldn't get into it, so when I pushed play and started watching this vid, I was like, okay, you guys, don't hurt me... you better like this movie. Lol!)
Another great movie Ralph was in is The Outsiders. It is based on the S.E. Hinton book of the same name. The movie stars Patrick Swayze, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowie, Diane Lane, Matt Dillon, and C Thomas Howell.
Ralph Macchio got the car after shooting in real life, as a gift from the producers. Cool, huh? BTW, the referee was the actors' teacher AND was a student of Bruce Lee's. The sad drunk Miyagi scene got the movie to the Oscar nominee's status that it is. Oh, and Pat Morita spoke English well, it's just Miyagi that couldn't...
There's a weird parallel between this movie and Mortal Kombat.... In fact in the sequel Karate Kidid 2 the antagonist near the end of the movie where is a very familiar outfit that almost resembles scorpions outfit

The new season of cobra kai will be directly tied to part 3. So def do that one too
I strongly recommend watching Karate Kid 2 and 3, maybe even The Next Karate Kid too (where Mr. Miyagi trains a teenage girl), before starting on Cobra Kai. The show keeps calling back to the sequel movies with each new season, and season 4 will be calling back to the third movie.
