  • Nick Mason is one of those "unsung hero's" of the drumming community in that he is not flashy or incredibly technical. What he does have though, is perfect timing and an ability to lay back in the pocket and play for the music. Much like John Bonham, he plays slightly behind the beat and seems to hold the music back just enough to let it breathe. I like having the ability to try to copy his huge 80's drum sound as well as playing the percussion parts at the same time.

    Insanely well done, but correct comments. Nick was not the drummer for this album, many percussionists and studio drummers were used, and Nick was given credit with them as he did his thing with suggestions. At the time, this was still Floyd shoving a finger to Roger Waters, and they used every possible means to do so, but what they did on the PULSE tour blew Roger Waters out of the arena on every concept of being the greatest band of all time (*2nd to Rush.. ) :)

    My God, just by shear luck I landed on your tune. It's awesome. 👍👍 great timing and tuning to match the studio recording. You're right Besides David Gilmour everyone in the band were actually unsung heroes. A matter fact, that the band only knew one and that was Syd Barret!
    However Pink Floyd was always been the combination of perfection that made the band so larger than the life. I guess it was Roger who besides the poetry knows how to milk the creative element from each band members. Keep it up🍧

    This track was not played by Nick Mason. It was recorded by Jim Keltner. Nick has played it only on tour. And when we think about it this isn´t Nike´s style of playing at all. The hits are very energetic and the hi-hat work is something that Nick wouldn´t do. The electronic drums in the intro sound more like a Bill Bruford thing to me LOL. Nick Mason hasn´t recorded most of the tracks on the album. But your job on the cover is excellent. I love it.

    Mike, you keep playing songs I played back in the garage band days. Judging by your screen name, we're probably the same age, so that makes sense. Point being - you've gotten me to put together a new kit and play again. Now let me tell you, muscle memory and stamina don't hang around well after fifteen years of not picking up a stick. But it's still as fun as I remember. Keep it up!

    • @mfournier01
      @mfournier01  Před 9 lety +2

      Hey Perry! Yeah I'm showing my age with my collection of 80's tunes but let's face it, some of the best drumming came from that era. The prerecorded pop of today is not designed for humans with 'feeling' and 'groove'... And if I had any part to play in getting a drummer back on the stool again then I am honored. I have actually pushed myself more lately to learn open hand technique, left foot excercises, and stamina that I never bothered to master back in the day. You are never too old to learn and have fun doing it. So glad to hear you are back and I await YOUR first you tube cover.

    Hope i'm not disappointing you but to Paul Mason's own admission, his contributions to the album A Momentary Lapse of Reason were quite minimal. So most likely this is either Carmine Appice or Jim Keltner.

    • @mfournier01
      @mfournier01  Před 9 lety

      gmikro Thanks for the info and though it is a little disappointing, it doesn't change the fact that Nick is a class act. I'm sure there were good reasons for his lack of participation. I could see the groove similarities to Keltner's style but not Carmine??

    The drum line is by Jim Keltner. Nick Mason does not sound so aggressive. In fact, live it is supported by percussionist Gary Wallis. On Momentary Lapse of reason has not played almost anything. This does not mean that he is not a good drummer.
    Gilmour had to rely on other drummers including Carmine Appice in other tracks. At that time the Pink Floyd had to present themselves with a captivating and more commercial sound. Nick mason's classic drumming was not very suitable for the context. Exactly the opposite of The Division Bell where Mason plays on everything, and feels.
    Congratulations to your performance.

    • @onthefaultline
      @onthefaultline Před 5 lety +2

      not just that: IIRC mason was burned out and out of practice at the time, so he wasn't in a good mood to play in the album.

    • @tonydakel8918
      @tonydakel8918 Před 2 lety

      On the new mix, Nick Mason re recorded all the parts himself! Its quite good too! But yeah on the original Nick only played about 3 songs and then extra percussion on the rest of the songs while Jim K played on the others. Carmine Appice was on Dogs of War

    • @evankeal
      @evankeal Před 3 lety

      @@mfournier01 wow, wasn't expecting that, was there a reason a kick was used for the template? I would have expected it was a modified cymbal or something, or a sample. I have a TD27 module, and it seems to have some good tools to modify with, but hard for me to imagine making a kick into a gunshot. I have been wanting that sound for various reasons.

    • @mfournier01
      @mfournier01  Před 3 lety

      @@evankeal The kick is programmed to the left of the 1st rack Tom but now I see you are referring to the sound I assigned to the rim of the floor Tom which is an electronic hand clap with huge reverb added. Sorry for the confusion. I haven’t played around with the td-27 but if it has sound effects look for a big clap and just crank up the ambience and add some big hall verb!

    • @evankeal
      @evankeal Před 3 lety +1

      @@mfournier01 Ah, havent got to exploring the fx yet, yeah it has claps, I should have thought of that by now, thanks for the tip and the cool video of a great great song. Those older modules have some great sounds, I am looking hard at going back in time in that respect with regards to Roland modules. The 30s are going to be 5k in 5 years, the 20s will be sought too. The 17/27/50 sounds are surprisingly a big step backwards.
