The funny thing about the Alpha Legion, is that they are already pretty well defined in some books: Since they never went to the eye of terror and just scattered, now you have a HUGE bunch of fragmented Alpha Legion cells that have cut contact with each other. They still keep the Spy/Secret Agent shenanigans, but every single cell has a different opinion on the matter of loyalty, what to do and what to think. Most of the Heresy era Alpha Legion are dead or missing, so the words of Alpharius and Omegon have been lost to time. One thing the whole Alpha Legion agrees on, is utilitarianism. If you're useful to their cause, the Alpha Legion will make use of you. Doesn't matter if you're a human, a mutant, a daemon or a Xenos, there is a place for you in one cell of the Alpha Legion. So much so that some cells of the Alpha Legion aren't even composed of gene-sons of Alpharius/Omegon, instead having very capable members of other legions that dawn the turquoise armor and the symbol of the hydra. Some of them are Loyalist and are looking for both probing for weaknesses in the Imperium, or finding their Primarch. Others are traitors, and wish to take over the remaining cells and reform the legion under its own banner. Some are just chaos cultists. Others just wish to be left alone and isolated. The Alpha Legion are basically like the Fallen, but way more numerous and with way more connections.
Kharne is the single best representation of the world eaters.
From the coolest head in a legion of literal dogs for the emperor, to an utterly broken champion of Khorne, and so beloved to the Blood God that a mountain of skulls purely collected by Kharne is next to him.
To be fair, he had his BEST friend for DECADES murdered before him.

I enjoy them more than any other legion. Where other loyalist legions are represented as these shining paragons, stalwart heroes and virtuous champions of humanity, the Iron Hands make no such pretenses, because they know exactly what they are. They are weapons. They’re not some beautifully wrought sword, dancing around in some dazzling display. They’re a hammer to the skull. They’re a gun pointed at the heads of the Imperium’s enemies, and they see no reason to disguise that with a veneer of heroism. They were built to destroy, they know it, they love it, and they lean into it harder than any other loyalist legion, with only the Imperial Fists coming close to them in that regard. To them, there is no greater purpose than striving to be the best weapon in the Imperium’s arsenal. The best weapon, not the most pleasing to look at. Function over form.

@@xvbd6067 I’d say that’s more the Iron Warriors’ style. To them, everyone is expendable to some extent. The Iron Hands are more about ensuring that every single one of their marines can do the maximum amount of damage to the enemy, and they’re CONSTANTLY trying to push that further and further with bionics and high-grade tech and weaponry. To the Iron Warriors, a marine is just a number on a spreadsheet. To the Iron Hands, a marine is an investment, and they’re always looking to maximize the returns on that investment.

With Alpha, I tend to view "main branch" (Omegan (or maybe Alpharius)) as loyal, but that there are also chaos war bands that didn't get the memo and are now lost in the sauce
Agreed. While its totally ok to meme with Slaneesh, reducing it to "hehe booba sex booba" makes them so one dimensional. Khorne is one dimensional enough already, dont bring the other gods to his level.

@@OneReallyGrumpyJillbut they don't need a need deep knowledge in that regard they could just remember that Slaanesh is the god of excess not just of sexual depravity, excess is an extremely ample concept that could lend itself to interesting story-telling even if applied to subject that is completely alien to the usual themes related to Slaanesh; if they can create a faction like the Blood Pact that's nuanced and interesting for the most limited of the Chaos Gods, Khorne, they for sure should be able to make something that's similar for a god embodies a concept that's way less restricted. That being said I expect nothing in this regard from them and anything related to Slaanesh will keep being just the pervert faction that does weird f*cked-up stuff
I view the Alpha legion as a foil for the Dark Angels. Like how the DA have their fallen being half loyalist half traitor. Same for the AL. I think gw does that legion foil stuff and could work wuth those 2 legions being the first and last. Ir the alpha and the omega if you will ;)
As a word bearers fan i have to agree my legion is highly unlikeable. But they do have a teeny bit of depth to them and likeable characters like Argel Tal and Elpihas the Inheritor. Dawn of War and Gothic Fleet Armada certainly contributed to my opinion of them.

I haven't gotten around to reading Salamanders books, but from entirely what you've said about the writing, the writers probably just need to draw from irl people who do insane shit to save others - case in point: Jack Pritchard of the New York City fire department. The nature of sacrifice that the Salamanders seem to have, giving their all to make sure people get out alive seems to be poorly understood by the writers (again, going off only the books' reputation).

I speculate one missing Primarch may have been sent secretly to the Immaterium and still resides there, sworn to a vow of silence i.e. the Legion of the Damned. I don't know how to explain their existence lol. The other is a mystery to me. Perhaps a back-up vessel for the Emperor to inhabit should he have fallen due to the destruction of his body. Unfortunately, he was placed upon the Golden Throne as a result of the Horus Heresy. So, that kind of leaves the back-up in a perpetual state of limbo or stasis. Again, this is all speculation. It may explain why they were erased from Imperial records and kept a closely guarded secret i.e. special access programs or contingency plans only known by people who are now dead or stuck on the Golden Throne (Malcador, Amar Astartes and the Emperor himself). Three people out of possibly hundreds of quadrillions in the Imperium of Man.
Another theory is that they didn't survive the Scattering. Another one would be they fell to Chaos or aligned themselves with Xenos. All of the theories result in them being struck from Imperial Record for some reason or another. So, screw the 2nd and 11th I guess lol.
for world eaters you forgot Lorke, master of the legion and his psycher friends that were kinda outcasts in after istvaan 5 among traitor WE. yet they still tried to stop angron from becoming a demon and they almost killed lorgar. they were the only traitor we that actually cared about their legio after istvaan 3

Bones have you read the Word Bearers Omnibus? It was the first 40k series I read start to finish. Was super metal.
Blood Angels encapsulate the duality of the Spirit of mankind unbridled savagery and true Nobility and what generational trauma can do, and despite all of this, they overcome through sheer will and tenacity and its why i love them.
As a Salamanders, iron hands , and technically white scars player I am pretty satisfied with this listing.

From what I've found reading the AL stuff, Syndri being a warp dust huffing might as well be black legion chaos worshiper, and the AL being double agents thing are both true. They WERE the secretly loyalists at the end of the heresy and a lot of them still hold that belief, being agents to cut out weakness in the imperium, but just as many have gotten lost in the lie, or fully fallen willingly. And due to the big battle vs the ultramarines where Alpharius dissappeared the legion is fragmented into these different warbands and cells, The many heads of the hydra are now pulling in every which way.
Normally I hate tier list videos. But THIS has been a GENUINELY fun and enjoyable tier list video. I found myself laughing out loud and some of the remarks of your less than favorite legions. Fun times! I wish I would've caught this live now, lol!

The absolutely best book for lifting the veil of what the modern Alpha Legion is, is Harrowmaster. I don't think it was that great a read, but it's entire reason for being is exactly to de-mythologise them and explain how they work in modern post-Cadia 40k.
An Alpha Legion oriented book I like way more is Shadow of Night, which follows a warband of Heresy-era AL legionaries infiltrating a hive city under siege and meeting primaris marines for the first time.
Loved Shroud of the Night, AL acting in a way we can understand but still retaining the AL mystique. One of the marines going, “Is that marine bigger than usual?” was fantastic.
The Blood Angels and the Salamanders are my favorite loyalist Astartes Legions. Their Primarchs are also my favorite. Magnus is my favorite Traitor Primarch. Fabius Bile is my favorite fantasy atheist second only to the Emperor. Based af lol

Small nitpick the Sons of Antaeus are from the Cursed Founding not the Ultima Founding, Cawl might had had something to do with them (it wouldn't surprise me if that's the case) but as far I know the Mechanicus might had used traitor gene-seed there without his intervention.
So on the black legion front first time i read about abbadon was in high school in the night lords book and always thought if him as a jobber this shows up in alot of csm books from bile to a buncha others

There are only 2 Tiers: Flesh and Iron All legions are Flesh except for the Iron Hands, they are Iron.
I'm sure you have a huge list of books to read already, but I can't recommend the ADB Ragnar Blackmane novel enough. It's a brilliant examination of the idea of honor in Astartes culture, with great showings from the Flesh Tearers and Dark Angels as well. Ragnar really epitomizes the best and worst of the Wolves in this one, it's worth checking out.
Mr Bones putting the Space Wolves as high as C Tier is wild from how he has talked about Space Wolves. Then putting Imperial Fists in A Tier. Wild.
The White Scars are real simple: they're a motorcycle gang. That's all. Space Marines with motorcycles. Oh, and they're loyalist. Now you know everything you need to know about the White Scars.

Thousand son player here. Agreed with thousand son D tier. They are just not warriors and magnus is just a bad leader. A great scholar is not enought. The thousand son needed a proper general. They could have been the most powerfull legion. Period. They just Weren't because of magnus leadership.
But i think you are wrong on esthetics and culture. Prospero and egyptian look are great and make sense when you read the books, with psyker glyph, meditation with the pearl necklace and ward saves.
The tragedy of the thousand son is even better because of prospero and how kind and great are its people. And how the thousand sons were very humane as a legion compared to how bitter twisted and ambitious they have become in 40k. That is why i play them and also to be annoying and say : all according to plan.
I like the black legion because they embody chaos undivided. They’re also the most versatile warband and I think they look bad ass. When new bikers come out I will make my own chaos version of the raven wing with only bikers and demon engines. There lore will be they’re mercenaries who work for abandon and there paint scheme will be the same but with red and teal/turquoise scales (like the alpha legion kindv)
Now give us a Primarch tier list. DO IT!

There’s a book, Morvenn Vahl Spear of Faith, coming out where the description said the main antagonist is a Night Lord called Death of Saints. Not focus of book but can never say no to NL stories.

They are still the only chapter/ legion that isn’t just vanilla space marines which puts them leagues above all the others. Besides space wolves but they look terrible.
So it seems like you've read a ton of 40k books or at least have a lot of knowledge about them. So far I've only read the Deathwatch books by Steve Parker and the Night Lords trilogy by ADB. The Deathwatch books were pretty fun, I liked the characters and the intrigue but oh man the Night Lords trilogy was just perfection, I'm afraid I'll never read another book or series that can stand up to it. I was wondering what your favorite 40k books were or if you had any good recommendations. The Night Lords are also my favorites (I also really like the Flesh Tearers and Raven Guard), but I'm just looking for a good read, any faction will do.
As you could tell ADB is a great writer and pretty much anything written by him will be great. Shroud of Night and Lords of Silence are great stand-alone traitor books.
I don't know if you clarified this as your favourites.

All this tier lists are wrong:
S for sanguinuis: Blood angels
L for the lion, Lupercal and leman: space wolves, Luna wolves and the dark angels
V for Vulkan: salamanders
A for Alpharius, Angron: alpha legion and world eaters
B for Perturbao: iron warriors
C for Corax and Conrad: Raven guard and the night lords
D for Dorn: imperial fists
F for Fulgrim and Ferus: Emperor’s children and iron hands
G for Guilliman: ultra marines
J for Jaghatai: white scars
M for mortarion and magnus: death guard and the thousand sons
-L for lorgar and the word bearers because FUCK them.
Alpha Legion isn't infallible. If anything they were beaten at their own game by the Cabal, who basically tricked Alpharius into siding with Horus, convincing him that by destroying the imperium they would destroy chaos. Because in his arrogance, thinking he was so shit eatingly smart, Alpharius thought he knew what the emperor intended.
I think during the Heresy, Alpharius and Omegon were divided and while Alpharius was committed to helping Horus based on those motivations, Omegon was sabotaging those efforts behind the scenes. Alpha legion's strength became its undoing. Nobody in the legion understood their primarch's intentions and because of this, most of the legion genuinely fell to chaos during the heresy. So after the heresy, even with Alpharius dead and Omegon still nominally loyal, there was no going back.
Omegon (if his death at the hands of Gulliman was faked) might be playing puppeteer behind the scenes to prop up the imperium, but he's doing it with a heavily fractured legion that is 90% converted to true Chaos Space Marines. And he's basically a dead man if he shows his face. I think they're an entertaining faction not because they're flawless, but because they're deeply flawed in interesting ways.
Legions list? Ok. Primarchs list more better!!

Dark Angels - #1/clear S tier in 30k, now with Lion maybe S tier?
Iron Warriors - They seem to be doing very well, they could also be S tier, I just think the Ultramarines are S tier alone, I might be wrong.
Sons of Horus / Black Legion - ugh, perhaps should be S tier..

Iron Warriors are A or S tier hands down! They are peak traitor while not succumbing to Chaos and being boring. They carried the Siege of Terra, extremely apathetic to the cares of others, tanks and artillery for days, one of the best Primarchs(even though he's almost as whiny and petulant as Lorgar or Fulgrim). They really are a top tier legion of all 18 legions.
Night Lords I feel are overrated, but have great lore to them. I completely agree that they have a charm to them with style, tactics, and ideology, but they just don't speak to me. A lot of their named members are cool, they just seem like boring pirates and serial killers and not genuinely interesting as a legion. Cool on their own, just dumb when all together. These guys are better when they're are as few of them in one location as possible.

1st legion comes first. They are the progenitors, they are the ones trusted with forbidden weaponry and they were the first to be called the angels of death. The Emperor's executioners. However, the traitors that chose not to give into chaos have balls of solid rock! \m/

World Eaters, Death Guard, and Word Bearers at S Tier.
Ultramarines, Iron Warriors, Alpha Legion, Night Lords and White Scars at A tier.
Black Legion, Salamanders, Raven Guard, Iron Hands, Thousand Suns, Dark Angels, Emperor's Children are C Tier
Blood Angels, Imperial Fists, Space Wolves, are D tier and below for me
