Maybe Dorn ran it through his head and figured out Alpharius was actually desperately trying to play it straight with him in their fight and went to go find out what Alpharius knew.
His legion has about as much subtlety as a Thunderhammer, but Rogal is fucking slick himself. Dorn tells Alpharius he knows his spies and agents and can find and kill them during the Crusade. Dorn then tells Alpharius a more efficient way he could have accomplished his goal with deceit and psychological warfare. Spy Master Dorn is not something you think of but how else is he getting the information? He's got an intelligence operation going on the side that must rival Alpharius and Malcador and no one, not even own his legion seems to know or talk about it. Like Damn Dorn, when did you put that together?

    • @GentlemanBystander
      @GentlemanBystander Před 4 lety +35

I think it was more that he legitimately underestimated Dorn.
With the exception of Horus, most of the traitor Primarchs tended to look down on the others to some degree of another. I think this was captured best in the Brothers of War interlude where both, nominally, loyal legions are taking part in the same compliance. Dorn understands that, while bloody, a traditional conquest to demonstrate to the people why they _couldn't_ win by crushing their armies had more value than leaving them wondering 'why did we lose?"
Both breed resentment in the conquered people, but being crushed by the more powerful foe is something our animal nature can grasp. Being utterly outclassed and handily defeated has a measure of catharsis to it, it means the conclusion was foregone. But with Alpharius' duplicitous assassinations it leaves a population wondering if they _might_ have been able to pull it out in the eleventh hour if not for the other side "cheating" and most certainly leaves the former authority figure of the planet filled with a seething hatred that might later be fomented into rebellion whereas a soundly defeated population will have the "remember what happened last time" as a hedge against an uprising until they can be integrated with the conquering culture/civilization.
At face value, if Alpharius was acting under the aegis of being a loyalist, it would mean he had a very poor read on the longitudinal aspects of human/group psychology. Rogal at least gives Alpharius credit for understanding the psychology behind a definitive victory, Alpharius discredit's Rogal's understanding of his methods which is exposed when Rogal points out how the tactic employed by the Alpha Legion was flawed given its core premise.
In the end, Alpharius assumed he'd have Dorn chasing his own tail and was, in turn, played by Dorn's own misdirection when he out Alpha Legioned the Alpha Legion by giving the illusion he was taking a bunch of forces out of the Solar System to strike at the enemy and, in turn, snatching the moment of victory from the Alpha Legion's gasp.

They really do a good job portraying him as he was suppose to be. He was the defender, the fortifier. He was the "unmovable object" of the primarchs. He took hits at times instead of simply dodging everything because he was the primarch tank. Where other primarchs would have been staggered, hurt, or thrown off balance, Dorn shrugs it off. He knows this will then rebound on others, temporarily throwing them off and that is when he delivers the killing blow. In short when you finally think you have Dorn "beat" that is when you are in the most danger because he doesn't react the same as the others in a fight.

Typical IW nonsense when they can’t handle that they failed at destroying the fists with literally every possible advantage. @@jeremysiegel10 Sadly it was Alpharius. As fun, interesting, and in all actuality, good (seeing as how he was tricked into joining chaos in an attempt to destroy it), as Alpharius was, it was him and he died. There is the other half to this story from Omegon's perspective. Alpharius and Omegon were linked to each other to the point they could sense each other in some way. Before anyone in the Alpha legion knew what happened, Omegon knew that his twin brother had died through their connection. You read it from his perspective, so it's not just posturing picked up by one of the Alpha legionaries. When Alpharius dies Omegon realizes internally that he is, for the first time, actually alone. Their connection is not something they can trick or fake (and why would Alpharius want to?). So unfortunately it was Alpharius. Also, no one, but another Primarch could hold their own like that against another Primarch. The Primarchs where just leagues above even the best champions of the legions. I am a Lion fan, but Alpharius is hands down my second favorite Primarch. When I read this I hoped that he hadn't _really_ died, but then I read Omegon's perspective, which confirms it. On the other hand Omegon and Alpharius are kinda one and the same, so even though Alpharius dies, Omegon lived at least until he fought Bobby G (don't know if this is actually confirmed though and might be an actual fake out).

this book was weird. The character of Alpharius was not very consistent with earlier depictions in Legion. The book wants us to think that he can orchestrate espionage so subtle and intricate that it is basically anime evil genius level, yet he seems to have no actual plan when he confronts his brother at the end. As a big fan of Legion, i couldn't help but feel that the last quarter of this book was pretty disappointing. as cool as the fight was, Alpharius's plans seemed pretty crap. All the same story beats could have been achieved without making him a joke. When Fulgrim thought he could corrupt Ferrus, there was some kind of reason for him to think that. These two primarchs have no emotional connection really to play upon, so he is a fool to try the tactic he ended up using. He could have, say, rigged the whole floor of the room with charges to drop the entire temrinator squad several floors down and then rain fire on them in the wreckage from above. the confrontation would have made more sense, and Dorn's underling already on the station could have intervened to give Dorn an opening to strike him down when he had already thought he had victory.

Terra was defanseless, and if no one was on Terra (which mind you is a big planet for only 10k Custodes to properly cover anyway especially when the Alpha Legion can infiltrate everywhere and hide and stuff to prepare for Horus or smt) Big E would have to leave his throne too early to Malcador to get rid of em, big no no

If you think about it, Alpharius put up a damn good fight against Dorn, considering Dorn's reputation.
But the thing is, the Alpha Legion has twin Primarchs, if they ever fought together while Alpharius was alive they would have been unstoppable

      I think there's a reason Omegon didn't help Alpharius 👀

That what doesn't make sense. Alpharius knew he was smaller and weaker than the rest of the Primarchs. Him trying to go one on one is just stupid...

I really need to read this in its entirety. Without the knowledge of what transpired here previously Rogal comes off to me as the villain. For Alpharius attempted to reason with him throughout the entire encounter. Yet Rogal refuses to listen. I listened to your previous video of their meeting and without the lore in its entirety Rogal motivation seems only that he disapproves of the methods of his brother. Was Alpharius already on the warmasters side after Horus had turned to chaos? But even so it just comes off as murder not justice. No opportunity to turn back to the emperor. As you always say the only way to get the most out of the lore is to read it for yourself. And in addition to that I’d add fully comprehend it all. I see another black library purchase in my near future!!!

Pretty sure based on the recent book called Head of the Hydra that it turns out that my brother Omegon met his end here.

Wolf Lord .... So Dorn took off Alpharius' arms/hand.... would it be a good theory to say that the Alpha legion have Dorn prisoner and that they left his hand behind as a message of vengance to his sons??

Regarding the block attempt, by Dorns wingman, it's quite obvious that it was written to convey two points:
    1) The power of the Primarchs is well beyond him (the wingman.) He swung with all his might, and he recoiled as if struck by lightning.
    2) Though he wasn't strong enough to even redirect the thrust, the energy that went into him, sending him reeling, is energy that didn't go into Dorn!
Hence, his effort wasn't in vain, not entirely.
Instead of the blow landing into Dorn with 25,000 LBs of momentum, it only landed with 15,000-20,000 LBs, etc.
