    ---
    Hi, in this video I made a knife from an old wood saw. It took me about three days.
    I used some power tools like a drill or a belt sander. And also some hand tools. Handle is made of a walnut wood. I used stainless pins.
    This knife is quite small but really sharp...it cuts a paper.

    Very well done. Liked the video progression, kept it interesting all the way through. Just enough sanding so we knew what happened but didn’t take the whole sanding journey with you. Really cool knife, nice handle too. Thanks for posting.

    Your handmade grinding jig is very impressive and L-6 saw blade steel is one of the best steels . Your use of calipers and skill level is impressive . Great looking knife .
    Best wishes from an old machinist and knife maker for over 40 years . Lefty

    Man I m completly in love with de shape of this knife! I draw one myself recently because I was looking to my perfect knife to build and it was almost (no full tang for me) the same! (but I had to notice that the papercut at the and is make with a very thick sheet so it don't say a lot on the sharpness of the blade ;) )
    sorry for the mistakes, I m french and pretty bad in languages. Schuss!

    circular saw blades are NOT hard only the edges are hardened thats why the tips and not the blade breaks if it hits anything put it in a vice and lever on it and it will bend and not recover if you put in an oven to normalise it will end up even softer but a very nice looking blade and handle heat treat then normalise

    So you didn't even heat treat or anything. Just cut it to shape grinded everything and then made your handle. I need to try to make one like this.

      @mycellarworkshop5822  Před 5 lety +1

      You are not the first who is surprised...this was one of my first knives and I thought that the heat treat is not needed. Actually it works. The blade is good. But I know that for next time heat treat is needed.

  • @kylemcclureazadsalahazadi

    The Kyle Real challenge demand: chromoly / stainless / nickel in a damascus style skinning knife. I've never seen an artist able to do this. True never been done. I've been told it can't happen. Bonus for Mithridiees style blade.

    • @mycellarworkshop5822
      @mycellarworkshop5822  Před 6 lety

      scottecooke Thanks! I think that it took me about 10 hours. And yes, I forgot heat tretment. But I don't have any problems with the blade in the meantime.

    • @scottecooke
      @scottecooke Před 6 lety +1

      10 hours for a first knife is pretty good. It took me way longer and mine looks like crap in comparison. My first one was mild steel. But even my first knife with 1084 took me over 20 hours of hands on time.
      A tip for the drilling. Drill on a low speed with more pressure. You want little spirals to come out not powder. Can't tell how fast from the video because it is sped up. I learnt this the hard way. I burnt out a few drill bits drilling at over 2000 rpm. Great for wood but not for steel. I did some research turns out it was way too fast lol. Also you can use oil on there as well. Helps when the steel is a little harder like a saw blade or you have to drill lots of holes.

    • @mycellarworkshop5822
      @mycellarworkshop5822  Před 6 lety

      Oh thanks for this long comment dude! I know that I should drill on low speed my old drill has only 900 and 200 rpm. And yes a forgot an oil but I normaly use it.
      And you also mentioned that it is a good time to made a knife in 10 hours - yes it is but I am not really sure about this time I just type it.

    • @scottecooke
      @scottecooke Před 6 lety

      Definitely change to 200 rpm then. Can change back for handle materials though. 225th sub by the way.

    • @mycellarworkshop5822
      @mycellarworkshop5822  Před 6 lety +1

      hi, I know that I missed this step. But this steel was hardened before I made the knife out of it. But I also know that I can slightly temper it with grinding or cutting. This knife was one of my first so everything isn't perfect.

    • @markt.6199
      @markt.6199 Před 5 lety

      My understanding is that most files and farriers rasp are heat treated but sometimes can be brittle. That would require tempering in your oven. Not an expert so correct me if I’m wrong.

    • @markt.6199
      @markt.6199 Před 5 lety

      Forgot to add that I assume it’s the same for sawblades

    • @mycellarworkshop5822
      @mycellarworkshop5822  Před 5 lety

      I think that saw blades are not hard as files...they should not be too brittle. But I think that it is a good idea to just temper a knife (about 200 °C for 2 hours).
