Making a bushcraft Knife from a farriers rasp file with no forge

  • Today I thought I'd have another go at making a knife from a rasp but rather than use the forge I just cold worked it so it would keep its temper.
    Knife is still needing a final sharpen and I'm going to have a go at making a leather sheath for it.

    If anyone was not at all really paying attention, this was really a master attempt at free handing an interesting knife pattern out of what looked like a ferriers' rasp. Not at all an easy job. The only thing for me, in what I take as an absolute in knife construction is that ALL knives MUST HAVE is a BOLSTER for proper control, indexing and most importantly SAFETY to it's user, the slight narrowing at the forend of the knife gave me pause because the lack of presence of the bolster for safety when working w/your tool your hand holding the knife has a tendency to slide dangerously close to the forward blade edge because of the scales design being used. Great content.

    @UKBladeshow Před 3 lety +3

    Hello mate! Great videos by the way!
    Zirconia gets blunt very quickly on those harder metals so unfortunately you may feel like you’re grinding but you need either ceramic or the 3M Cubitron II family (depending again on which metal you’re working on). Keep up the videos and the good work!

    • @DiesInEveryFilm
      @DiesInEveryFilm  Před 3 lety +2

      Hey man thanks for watching, yeh this was earlier days when i had no clue what i was doing haha, I only use cubitron 2 nowadays its an amazing belt for sure

    • @UKBladeshow
      @UKBladeshow Před 3 lety +1

      Cubitron IIs are amazing yes (I know that, I was the person who introduced the product to knife makers many years ago hahahaha!) one little tip I must say though is don’t use it on anything soft or non-ferrous (wood, brass, copper) as the technology of Cub2 only works if you “break” it. It will clog it otherwise. Hope that helps!

  • @WildStyleWorks
    @WildStyleWorks Před 5 lety +3

    Hey Buddy, you have the wrong belts ;-) the VSM ZX series are made for soft materials, i use them only for wood and plastic. try the VSM XK855Y they are Killer, belive me i use them my self and they cut away like crazy. they are with ceramics and made for hard steels and metals. also the XK870Y but they are more for unhardned steels and stainlless like V2A (AISI304)

    Instead of grinding out the file marks.I filled them using fluxed braising rod,and then ground it down smooth.
    It had a full hidden tang,inside an Alaskan mountain goats horn.
    It was not only a work of art.
    It would take and keep a hair popping edge,and chop hardwood like a hatchet.

    Nice job buddy, those old-work tool steels can be very temperamental. Fantastic workshop too! I'd highly recommend annealing the files before you work them. Even though you're not hitting furnace temps while grinding, you're still introducing enough heat to alter the temper, and will likely get uneven hardness, which could result in breaks.
    Also curious: why grind off the teeth before profiling? Seems you'd get less belt wear if you profile first, going your primary bevels, then work the sides.
    I've always loved the look of bastard (file) knives. Well done.

    • @DiesInEveryFilm
      @DiesInEveryFilm  Před 8 lety +2

      +Matt Bufford hi Matt thanks for the info on annealing 1st I will be doing this on a future project.
      I ground the teeth off 1st so I could draw my design easily but I think in future I will use a grinder or grinding disc as that will be a lot quicker and easier but I opted for my sander to try get the side even to draw on my basic shape. Probably not the best way to do things but then again this video was not planned I just went into the workshop and did it all off the cuff. Thanks for watching and commenting feel free to check out my other videos or subscribe for future builds.

      +Diesineveryfilm Customs file blades make great knives. the steel is usually 1% 1.05% carbon. The problem, as you have discovered, is grinding steel that is at it's maximum hardness. probably 65c or higher. if you put the file in your kitchen oven at about 400° f, for about 2 hours. which you should do anyway because it relieves internal stress' in the steel and it will bring the blade down to a working hardness that can be sharpened easily. You will bring the hardness down to a 56c-58c which is where most knives fall in hardness. The blade will be easier to grind. (nowhere near annealed steel, but easier than full hardness). You will use less abrasive. I know those blue ceramic belts cost me $6-$7 a pop. + you'll save a ton of time. I can grind a similar sized blade of Hatefull 3/16" Thick D2 steel in 20-30 minutes.

    Strong suggestion, that I assume you learned in this make (and I've learned too!):
    --- Shape the front of the handle scales BEFORE epoxying them on to the blade. ---
    It's a real P.I.T.A. to try to get that bevel AFTER glue-up, without gouging the blade (even with some taping). And it's even MORE difficult if you're doing a more complex shaping of the handle there, like an arc.
    Shape it, test-fit-it (often! and that's good general advice for ALL knifemaking steps!), and don't glue it up until that end is damn-near perfectly what you want. (The rest is find to shape after glue-up.)
