After 3 years of JUNE/JULY yellow/ heat spots on my zoysia (I have a morning direct sun light reflecting from a neighbor's window reflecting on to my lawn- like a magnifying glass heat. But yesterday I found (while using a long screwdriver) to feel if the clay soil (Greenville SC) was too hard in certain areas, well I felt/heard a few 'clicks' in the yard as I pushed the screwdriver in... I discovered there are small patches of rocks/gravel 2" below the soil line. How do i safely remove the gravel (6ft x 6ft area) without destroying my grass? Thanks
My God my God I finally treated my entire, lawn with this diy today. When I tell you approximately an hr later my lawn started to turn greener. 4hrs later my entire lawn was greener than any lawn on my street. I drove through my neighborhood, I didn't find one lawn greener herein the Midwest. My neighbors are peeping and looking. Sad to say they are soooo jealous, and literally it shows. I would be glad to share your channel if they ask but right now I'm getting dirty looks and it feels sooo good. Thank you Lawn Care Nut. I'm a singled mother and my lawn looks better than It did when my ex use to take care of the yardwork.
I remember your video "investigation" into particular problem areas where summer heat just baked the grass and you mention that again here, rocks/gravel under the sod. I was very specific at my parents new house they built, they're just preparing for sod to be installed that Dad pays attention to their grading etc etc. He's already done work himself to remove possible problem areas even pre grading. Fantastic information as always !!
A video idea: this is the time of year for BBQs, graduation parties, birthday parties outdoors, etc. A video of how to help your lawn recover from high traffic, a bounce house ( or inflatable pool) on it for a few days, or any other increased pressure stressors to the lawn. In the mean time, any tips following 4 days of five year old birthday parties with a bounce house on the lawn?
I think this comment is underrated.
Great video idea, we played corn hole one night and trampled the heck out of the grass. I hope for a video too. But until the I’m gonna stay off the spot and hope it recovers. Worse case top dress that area
This
It’s called “time”
This is a great video because I get a lot of pictures from buddies asking me why they have hot spots in their lawn. Most of it is adjusting sprinklers but your products work great too! Nice video.
I’ve been adding a little Air 8 to my dry spot concoction as well as your home method. This year I went with Four Play just to see if I notice a difference. Well done
Just what I was looking for Al doing my research on my winter kill and it was an irrigation problem from the dry fall. Gonna whip up a batch when I get home tonight!
You always make the right videos at the right time!
Good one Allyn this is right on time. Not living too far from you, next town north. This is on target for what is going on with my lawn. Thanks a bunch!!
Always start the night off right with some good 4 play 😉 Best combo for Summatime Protec-tion!!!! Thanks for the video uncle Al!!! 😊🤙🏾
Just left my yard alone for the next 10 days…following your course..looking good so far I’m genuinely so excited to see it when i get back from vacation
Just what I needed. Have a few spots that aren’t getting the right amount of water. I’m going to do Hydretain on those areas and see if the videos help with anything else.
I love this dude. Shout out to the lawn men. Thanks for the helpful content.
Stocked up on a full year of fertilizer and fourplay thanks for the discount Allyn
Happy Memorial Day! Thank you for the tip
6:07 “quite a little bit” is my new time measure when she asks how much longer it’ll take. 😎👍🇨🇦
Never a short supply of tips and quips!
I just want to say Thank you. I’ve been following your advice and binge watching your videos and my grass is growing and I’m super happy
that's great to hear! I hope you get to enjoy the mow too!!
Me too! I knew nothing about lawn care and now I have the nicest lawn on the block and I'm a lawn nut myself. I love this stuff.
This dude is the LAWN GOD!!!
10:38 @thelawncarenut I know you've mentioned the apparent effects of rain versus tap water irrigation in the past, but this time it got me thinking.
1. I know that municipal tap water in the USA is treated with disinfectants (Chlorine or Chloramines) to kill microorganisms.
2. I know that some of us in the lawn care community are beginning to pay more attention to soil health and beneficial microorganisms that live in it, thanks to you and JP over at Lawncology.
So, how do those disinfectants effect the beneficial microorganisms in soil?
Thanks to a previous similar LCN video, I started poking into parts of my lawn that experienced dry spots frequently and discovered that those areas were basically full of rocks. I had a very thin layer of dirt sitting on top of foundation of rocks. Spent many days digging up those rocks and smoothing over the lawn afterwards, followed by overseeding (cool season lawn, WA). For those experiencing dry spots, there's a high chance that you have rocks under dirt, so grab a long screw driver and poke into those parts to test.
There was an unexpected side effect after I removed a lot of rocks though, apparently those rocks were making that part of the lawn unattractive to moles and immediately after removing the rocks, a mole came in and destroyed my lawn leveling and overseeding effort. I trapped and murdered that little sucker but the damage was done.
On the topic of non-ionic surfactant, can you get those relatively cheaply from farm and feed supply places such as Tractor Supply, who was their own store brand FarmWorks 80/20 Surfactant. I use it in my herbicide sprays and also as a wetting agent during summer for more effective spot watering on trouble spots.
I like that you used murder as your verb for that mole. Die mole!
How long ago? Have any moles returned since?
I used your idea of digging down to see whats going on. I built my house 2 yrs ago, I found piles of concrete & tile morter. Way ti much for me to dig out. I was so disappointed cuz I have spots all over. Would have to dig up half my yard. Words to all new home builders- have a big conversation with people laying your sod to ge sure your lot is scrapped and clean.
Perfect timing! I'm local to you and got a nasty burn spot due to a defective sprinkler.
I just asked my lawn/landscaper to fix this lol -- good timing
Know thy yard. No truer words. I have several severe dry spots in my yard from the sun reflecting off of my front windows in the morning. My house faces east by design, but had no idea heated reflections were a thing. I plan to get some turf guard window film to see if that helps (along with more water).
I've had really good results using milky spore powder and haven't had grub issues since I applied it 2 years ago. I'll find one or two when digging but nothing like the handfuls per sqft like before.
Thanks LCN!
Way to bring us along.. good job Sir
Allyn perfect timing with the sale Bruh! I’m about to order the large bag of Stress Blend! I’ve been very impressed with all of your fertilizers !
thanks Mike!
This video saved my ass! Laid down similar product and the issue went away!
Thanks, great info!
A vid on chinch bugs and when to treat would be good.
Thank you for all your information, it's so helpful. I live in Florida and my front yard was sodded with St. Augustine 3 months ago and I have these brown spots and some weeds popping up. My back yard has Bahia which also has weeds. What weed control product would you recommend that is safe for both grass types?
You’re the man brother.👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks again brother
These videos are helpful
Allen, you look like you’re getting shredded bro!? Keep it up! 💪
thank you!
Keep up the good work boss
Throwing down some Stress Blend tomorrow.
So much info in one video. Really appreciate it 👍
Put some hydratain on yesterday hoping it helps with my dry spots
I live on a limestone hill. Heck yes there are rocks under mine.
I always wondered what those old guys were thinking about while they were out there watering! LOL
Hi Allyn, quick question. I moved into a new home in So. Indiana recently that was sodded with KY bluegrass as far as I can tell, or a cool season blend at least, back in early November '22. Most of my front yard is on a fairly steep slope, and there was no fertilizer treatment done to it that I'm aware of. It's still in pretty decent shape, stressing from recent drought, so I've been watering per your guidelines. I recently saw your video from years ago on new sod treatment schedule. Do you still recommend I use Milorganite starting out? I have a bag of Scott's Summerguard, and was also interested in your Stress Blend while building a package to get some Bio-Stimulants. I'm unsure where to start and with what. Any advice would be much appreciated. BTW, I'm looking forward to using the Bio-Stimulants, testing my soil, and using your new app and calendar.
I’ve had great luck treating dry spots with the underhill H2O maximizer product.
thumbs up when the dish soap fell over😂
Maybe Yard Mastery should relase a Hydratain scented candle for LCNs. Smells amazing.
Hi Allyn, Love your video's, Where can I buy those hose end sprayers? Thanks, Tom
Lawn Looking good there in FL. Use to live there myself - now in TX- hot hot here lots of dry spots. So if I do not use all of the bottle receipe- how long will the left over keep ?
Great video, but I'm in Chicago. Will those tips work for my grass? Thank You. Happy Fathers Day
Have you measured with tuna can how much water your sprinkler is putting in that area? I live in Florida and I have noticed during the drought season the pressure was lower and therefore putting less water in some areas..just a thought
Thank you. I have a question about the sprayer. I found them in 20:1 and 30:1 ratios. Which is best for this application? Thanks again
Texas this year had a huge influx of moths and butterflies this year
Great for the birds and other creatures. Play a huge role in the food web
hey Allyn should we wait for rain to drop products or is it okay to do so during drought conditions?
My nickname back in college was The Penetrator! 🤣 😂 😆
🤣🤣🤣
Hey there! I actually had my grass next to the drive way that did not come back after winter dormancy.. I sodded the front lawn 4 years ago. I assumed it died back from foot traffic over the winter.. I just wonder if you might say that this is the case or maybe another problem.. the rest of the lawn looks super healthy. I pulled up the dead lawn added some good local soil amendments and re-sodded the area.. it’s looking good so far!!
foot traffic on frozen ground will kill it for sure, plus if you used any salt on the driveway, that would also contribute. Resodding was smart, have fun with all the watering!
I’m getting old I guess cause I love strapping on a backpack sprayer and spraying with rubber boots in while the neighbors stare. On dark blue green lawn in the entire neighborhood thanks to LCN!
Old?
@@CCCC-tq8yo older
Right there with at 70
Me too, spraying with my rubber boots and 4 gallon backpack sprayer. they have no idea what I'm spraying 😂
@@Legendary_UA lol 38 here but still like doing it!
Could you apply this to the whole yard or just certain spots
so the surfactant helps the 4play penetrate deeper? and be sure to spray and pray! 😂
this is why I love you channel dude, throw er down!
What is the difference between watering it in and just adding more water to the final solution?
Hey Bud!
I have seen some people use a 46-0-0 Fertillzer on those heat spots. I would believe you more because I've been watching you for years. Do you recommend this in the fall time rather than Aeration
What kind of grass is that?? Its so tall and thick.
I need some advice for my current situation.
I currently am suffering from tons of red ants, moths, mosquitos and ticks in my new sod lawn in zone 6b. Any recos for treatment that are safe to use in canada?? So glad Ive found your channel.
Thanks!!
I want to fertile my lawn too, which should I do first the shampoo treatment or fertiler first? Thanks
what is the ratio on that hose end sprayer? 20:1 or 30:1?
Would you recommend this for heat stress in fescue lawns?
First Aussie 😁. Al, a comprehensive video on a glorious blue sky bird chirping day, perfect. 😎
How many applications of this should I do ? Just treated my bad area yesterday morning
Don't know if I missed this, but how often do you suggest applying the mixture?
What is the purpose of the ionic surfactant? Isn't that used in a foliar application so the mixture spreads evenly on leaf tissue instead of beading up? Given that this mixture needs to be watered in, what purpose does it serve?
My ducks would love the sod web worms
Can i spray this from a back pack/battery Pump sprayer? If so would dilution be 1 gal of water or 2 gal of water?
Do you advice to do this on 1 week-old RTF sod? Temps have been 105 F.
If you have the ortho hose end sprayer what setting would you suggest?
Should this be done only after I get a good amount of rain after a dry spell not during the the dry spell we are getting no rain here in southern wi
As opposed to dawn have you ever tried this product from grow more called e z wet it's a soil penetrant
Alan, can you possibly identify a rhizome weed I have right now, 6/2023, in my lawn, in the Grand Rapids,Mi area. I've worked in your Ole Chicagoland area many times. Thanks, Greg.
I live in Oklahoma, where the summers are really hot. I believe my lawn has officially died. I have read some articles that say if I have a large area of brown patches( dirt). It's time to lay down more sod. I work long hours so it's hard to be around for watering. I really like the large blades of your grass, but will it grow and survive 115-degree weather? What would you suggest?
Hello! First time viewer! Thank you for taking time to share this. I am not a beginner, so I have a quick question when you have time….
You mentioned in the last section a video about rocks. The homeowner before me used their lawn as kind of a rock quarry, lol. So I am currently digging that stuff out.
My question is: how much and how deep should I go with rock elimination?
Thank you for your time
Just dig out the areas that have troubke staying green in summer. Let that be your guide
@@Thelawncarenut thank you again for your time and advice!
I'm trying to get a look at that there zoysia lol But you must be avoiding it because it looks like mine, being slow and hopefully keeping it shorter is making it run more. Can you give me an update on it since your about tree weeks behind me and it seems we've stayed in a little bit colder temps at night that I think have stalled it's progress?
Glad to see I’m not the nut that talks to himself out in the lawn! Lol
I don’t understand the dish soap part. Can you explain? Thanks!
Allyn, which product is more effective with maintaining water in the yard? Hydertain or 4-Play?
Hey bro. Hydretain is really all you need for general use. FOURPLAY is for spot treatments of the worst areas.
I have baaahiiiiiiaaaaaaagraaaasss at our new house and I love it
I want to help my lawn so bad but i dont have a irrigation system in my yard how can this help if i want to make my lawn look healthy and green i see your in florida and it does get 90° here and it's bad when you dont have a irrigation system
What setting on Dial N Spray for this?
I would have been tempted to put Fourplay/DIY equivalent during the periods of LDS hand watering. Why isn't this right?
How about using Hydretain in granule form?
My dry spots are dead in 1 week. Last week it was not as “dormant” as this week
can you do an honest review on the z6 in Florida saint Augustine. Seems like all the reviews are all on very thin grass
Allyn, do we have to spray the area with water first before applying the Fourplay or custom mix? With Hydretain the instructions are to spray it on a wet lawn, and the Fourplay/custom mix contains Hydretain.
Excellent question- there is no need to pre-wet with this since it's just a spot, but if you do pre-wet it won't hurt either.
@@Thelawncarenuthey Allyn should we wait for rain to drop products or is it okay to do so during drought conditions?
With the current heat wave and drought, my entire lawn is one big brown spot.
I have brown spot in my back yard but not in the front. I put down Sunni land weed and feed the same day the same amount
Great lawn- is tomorrow Memorial Day derby day? Thrower down?
I'm always looking for a reason 🤣
Question
Can you just use four play instead of mixing all this.
Doesn’t humic acid bring down soil ph ?
I have same thing, but the blades were super orange...I haven't put any fertilizer down so I am thinking disease. I put some diseaseex down just in case....
Any decent solutions for heavy dog traffic?
What type of grass do you have on your lawn.
I’m wondering that too
Great content as we’ve had almost no rain all season here on Long Island. You mentioned the moths which reminded me. I did the grubEx in May last year. I think it was too late as I saw grub damage in the backyard this spring. I bought the liquid in the white bottle from the LCN website but forgot the name of it. It’s a spray. Can I still spray and pray with that now or too late? Time got the best of me
Does the measurement of ingredients change if I were to use this to cover the whole lawn instead of just spot spraying?
You can keep it the same, but just wet the lawn first, then immediately water it in. You don't want the stuff drying on the leaves - needs to get into soil. Wetting the lawn ahead of time will help with that.
What's the point of the surfactant if you are targeting a soil app? and 10% is super high. Are you trying to keep it from leaching?
the surfactant breaks the surface tension of the water so the entire solution can penetrate into the soil more readily.
The FourPlay Bottle reads 76% Hydretain , but DIY mix is 60% RGS and 30% Hydretain. Does it matter ?
You can change up the ratios if you wish - just dont make the mix too thick in that little hose end tank.
