    I play a lot of online games with international mates of mine, including several from China and Taiwan, and it has been... scary seeing culture shift there over the past couple of decades, especially the past 5-7 years.
    The CCP's indoctrination is so deeply engrained that most of the current Chinese youth I speak to (anyone under about 20-25yo) fully believes that the Tianemen Square protests never happened, and that they are a false narrative written by the United States/West to make China look bad by painting a history of false events.
    They actually truly believe this, and... that's only one example I'm choosing since you mentioned the massacre there. They believe the pictures and video are fake with the same certainty that you and I have that gravity will still work in another 3 seconds. It's terrifying.
    This general belief/denial applies to almost any major negative event that China took part in over the past several hundred years - it just "never happened", or if it did, China was not involved at all, and it was 100% Westerners, according to what they are taught in school and by their peers/parents/government.

      @@lazysun-leo7491 communism has never worked for any country, so maybe it's indeed a bad thing (as bad as fanatic captalism, I might say). It maybe sorta kinda worked a little bit for Yugoslavia and Cuba, but even then... Cuba is still poor and Yugoslavia was more socialist than communist (and collapsed in the end due to geopolitical and economical reasons). Also, HIV was soon traced to Africa the same way SARS-COV2 was traced to China, and there's nothing wrong with tracing origins. Difference is that in Africa there was no medical knowledge about HIV and they could have never prevented the spread. China knows a lot, or maybe even a whole lot about epidemics and maybe even this virus in particular as it might have already been under research. Upon the outbreak, regardless of where it originated, they failed to act, for which the system is to blame. H1N1 isn't quite a clear cut case, the Spanish Flu was named after Spain that reported on it, the first notable outbreak was in the US but could also have come from migrant workers. Given the medical knowledge at the time, that's also not something to blame anyone or anything for in particular.

      We never formally apologized for the nukes on Japan. We knowingly and purposefully did it to show the Soviets that we had a super weapon. “Asia is ours, back off.”
      Conventional fire bombings would have led to victory just the same. We wanted to show that we had a unique devastating weapon to the world, and what it would do to a city. One plane, one bomb.
      When Obama went to Japan as the first President to commemorate the dead of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 50%-70% of Americans flipped out about Obama going on an “apology tour”. He didn’t actually apologize.
      Nor should he.
      So this nonsense or being indignant about a country “not apologizing” is lunacy. If you think you are morally correct in doing something, you wouldn’t apologize for it.
      We straight up shot down an Iranian passenger jumbo jet with 200+ innocent people on board and George Bush Sr, said America never apologizes.

    • @awjaaa
      @awjaaa Před 3 lety

      This is exactly what my Chinese wife has told me. There will never be a revolution, there. The sad reality is that thousands of years of practical slavery under dynasties has led to an ingrained, default mentality of "just so we can get enough money to eat and have a basically happy life in our little corner, why push it?" The Chinese people may never care about who the slave masters are, again, just so they can have families and feed them.

    • @soul832006
      @soul832006 Před 3 lety

      @@awjaaa I'll disagree on that point. There are many Chinese who have built up their wealth. For the majority though, they have to live off the wages and jobs that are available to them. I've seen it first hand that if you don't have a job, you will starve. There is no social security system and such a system would be too costly to run on such a large population anyway.
      Actually the culture of looking out for yourself is a mixture of modern life in China (the competition for jobs, low wages, lack of social security, dodgy business operators etc) and the traditional beliefs of family only, as outsiders will take advantage of you. Confucius teachings placed value in family relations first but also harmonious society. The evil dictatorship that arose on its place taught the people to look out for themselves and be wary of your neighbours/loved ones.
      It was under the new rulers that many Chinese went through the hardships of famine during Mao's rule. In those early days, people learned how to survive and look out for themselves first. But the Party taught people to dob each other in. So even family became wary of each other. This further ingrained the idea that people should put themselves first as a matter of survival.
      Now in saying all of that, you have to also consider the concept of face. No one wants to stand out for two reasons: risk of losing face and also the old Party saying "it's best to avoid sticking your head up above the crowd or it might get shot at"...so forced compliance, living standards, wages, cultural history etc have all combined to shape their mentality.
      Winston explained the grab hag mentality quite well for the older generations that experienced the hardship of famine. But we cannot discount the other hard truths of life in China for the average Chinese person these days. It just can't be talked about over there or you risk being harassed, punished, imprisoned or in the worst case disappeared. With their family members also harassed to increase the forced compliance (not to mention loss of social face). China is also a collectivist society in the sense that smaller cities/towns will quickly find out the personal troubles of another and cause loss of face.
      This also explains the family culture of not discussing personal business dealings, finances etc. They want to protect themselves from being taken advantage of. I guess that's sort of true for every culture though. I wouldn't go around talking about my financial position to anyone either. So some things are just a universal reality across cultures.
      But face 保面子 (saving face) is the core reason for not saying sorry. Plus the Party would lose all legitimacy if it showed weakness by admitting wrongdoing. So the Party will never say sorry. It simply cannot under its ruling principles and under the backdrop of Chinese cultural influences. Although one could argue too much culture has been lost since the Great Leap Backwards!

    I meet a number of Mainland Chinese students here in the UK. And privately, they acknowledge these evils. But privately. I showed one the grab hag videos and she nearly cried. They know it's wrong...but until they say it publicly it will continue.
    Keep up the good work. The Chinese people deserve better!

    Interestingly enough, "Was it not the Kuomintang, the nationalists, who largely engaged the Japanese? After all, the Communists, who eventually defeated the Kuomintang in 1949, were in disarray in 1937.
    Didn’t Mao Zedong tell Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka in Beijing in 1972, when diplomatic relations were restored between China and Japan, that if it hadn’t been for the Japanese, the Communists would never have taken power as the invasion gave them time to regroup under an umbrella of resistance to Japan?"

      100% and this is widely acknowledged by people in China. The KMT did some awful things too, poor military tactics, a puppet Japanese govt., suppression of different political movements. But it pales in comparison to what the CCP did and continues to do.

      The Koumintang are ending up at the CCP side nowadays, so maybe they were evil all along... At least they founded modern day Taiwan so it wasn't all bad.

    Taiwan is a great country and I’ve always enjoyed its beauty and hospitality on my several visits. As an Australian I’m inclined to recognise its independence after the atrocity the Communist Party of China committed against the world 12 months ago.
