- A trip down Main Street, Massena, NY
The township of Massena was officially created by Legislature on March 3, 1802. However, its first settlement is dated back in 1792 when Frenchmen came up the St. Lawrence River from Montreal in search of lumber for shipbuilding.
This sawmill was erected in 1792, and the site is now occupied by a stone house built by Captain Haskell in 1825. However, Massena did not have its official name until that day in 1802, despite the traffic that ran through it for the lumber. Prior to the town name of Massena, Mohawk Indians called the Massena settlement Nikentsiake, which with its meaning of “where the fish live”, lead many to assume that the once barren grounds of Massena were great for fishing along the St. Lawrence River.[1]
This official Legislature date means Massena is estimated to be about 215 years old now in 2017. Massena is named after André Masséna, a military commander under Napoleon Bonaparte and hero of the Battle of Rivoli (a key victory for the French against Austria), who was never actually directly involved with the United States.[2] In fact, he probably had no idea the town was even honored in his name.[3]

Twenty years ago this was one of the most active places in the county. Industries like GM, Alcoa, & Reynolds Aluminum were going full bore. Today, well. . . .

Happy 2 year anniversary! I just drove to Tim Horton's today. They definitely aren't the same as Dunkin' Donuts, though. Completely different unrelated company.

As a Massena local who lived in Ottawa for some time (now, sadly, if FL) I can say Dunkin Donuts is to Tim Horton's what a Yugo is to a Rolls Royce. NOTHING beats Tim Horton's coffee. Dunkin tastes like someone took a used Tim's cup and filled it with hot water and tried to pass it off-- weak, thin and embarrassing. Try harder, DD.
(And thank you for this video, btw-- have been gone for years, but really appreciate being able to watch a trip down Main, even if Massena now is a shell of its former bustling, thriving little self.)

Lived in massena thirty plus years... walked just about every street in the town. Still in the north country...just further down the road lol
I moved to Ogdensburg in 1979 and moved out of the area in 1995. I've lived here about 24 years and when I go back it's very nostalgic. I hope my video brought back good memories. Thanks for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.😎
I moved from Maine to New York in 1980.my then wife grew up in chase mills. Outside of visits back to Maine, never seriously thought of moving back. Currently live in Canton.

My mom and dad are both buried in Massena at the old Pine Grove cemetery. We spent many summers going back to visit friends and family and still make trips back when we can.
I have vivid memories of Massena from our many visits there when I was a kid, as we had relatives who lived there. My uncle worked for Alcoa and my aunt worked in the office for the Seaway. At that time, back in the 60's and 70's I remember it being quite a bustling place...But just like a lot of smaller cities now, not so much, which is sad. Thanks!

Thank you for this video and the comments with further insight. My husband and I are considering moving to this area from Texas because the homes are beautiful. But we have to be very careful where we go as he's a disable veteran, so his job choices are limited. This is definitely giving me a lot to think about.

Dr. RGST : I went to Clarkson, 4 wonderful years. Loved every minute. But only went up to Massena once.
You should have seen this bustling town during the seaway days. Been downhill ever since, like Ogdensburg.
Another good reason to amend the Jones Act. Places like Massena would benefit from increased shipping, rather then relying on road and rail exclusively.
@@jamesgardner6499 Massena and Ogdensburg are tough places to attract industry which would offset some of the infrastructure costs. Too remote, harsh winters and property taxes are way too high and a burden. Back in the day cheap electricity from Seaway power projects were a huge positive for industry, doubt that is true anymore. Today everything is made overseas, companies have no loyalty to the US let alone small towns . Ogdensburg once had several factories and the State Hospital with thousands of jobs that supported the middle-class.
Once the factories left so did 6-7 new car dealerships.

@@cheftomsd Your right. Theres no reason why i pay more taxes on my house assessed at 84,000 then my sister in Delaware pays on a 500,000 house. Its just stupid. And trust me, there are far more amenities paid for in Delaware then massena. The town really offers nothing. WHy not have a YMCA there to bring the community back. No, they will just put out another liquor license and keep the local druggies boozed up. Ever look at the towns expenditure budget? 275,000.00 Miscellaneous. What is Miscellaneous? Its called skimming money. Id love to be Mayor and go back into the fiscal year expenditures and start putting some people in jail. They get away from it because 95% of the population doesnt pay attention to it and the other 5% are in on it. Look for the 2023 budget expenditures.....you wont find it. You have to pry to get them to show it to you. I often thought of running for Mayor to clean up the town, but I just cant take the cold winters that last into April.
Thanks for the nice view. Massena home styles looks a lot like a typical working class New England town. They really need to fill some of those stores on Main St with, well, anything! Probably a nice place to live if not for the frigid winter cold. Also, only about 1.5 hour drive to Montreal if you want big city shopping, culture and entertainment ect. I think there is a daily train from Cornwall to Montreal just across the border.
I grew up in Lawn Guy Land, lol. You are way up there, so cooooold! What month is this June? Just kidding, thanks for the video.. I was checking out random home prices in Massena, these are the type of places l could afford to live. If I ever get kicked out of Philly I’ll take my empire of dirt and re-retire to someplace peaceful like the big M...Plus l like the cooold!

please dont. I live here & i whole heartedly advise you don't come here as it has really changed for the worst throughout the years. I get if you're just wanting to live here for the novelty but really, this place is a shit hole & i mean it. Take it from a resident.. we have the st. lawrence locks & a wal-mart. If you're looking for nothing then this is the perfect place to live!

I used to live there l left, bc l needed something that was not in Massena l was there 11 months...
I imagine that when GM closed it's plant that made many pack up and leave. Corporate greed has destroyed so many American towns. And without good jobs whop would want to brave the long cold winters up there.
In the 1950's while my father was working at Rochester Products Division (RPD) of GM they offered to transfer him there with better pay and a bonus to help get a house. He stayed in Rochester. By the mid 1990's it was gone. During that time Reynolds Aluminum was bought out and closed by ALCOA. Now ALCOA is splitting into two companies and now Massena will suffer again. @@The_Cultural_Historian_DrRGST When I drove long haul trucks about 20-25 years back I saw a lot of those once industrial towns that ended up this way. GM tore down the Massena plant but other companies left them standing. I've been to Rochester once, about 1998-99 and it was sad too. Not the way America should be.
@@muffs55mercury61 It is sad. Where I live in Troy right now the city is coming back but it's been decades and it's becoming more of a bedroom community. Because of Amtrak it's becoming a draw for people who work in NYC. 😎
@@The_Cultural_Historian_DrRGST Troy, NY? I passed thru there in 1989 on a coast to coast drive as its on the direct road to Bennington, VT. As I recall it was quiet and I think I ate lunch someplace there.

as a Cuban living in Canada when I went to the USA felt like is the country most beautiful i the world with the nicest people to talk to on the streets,,,,,, many people criticise Americans im sorry the whole world is just jealous of what Americans have achived
The US is a beautiful place to visit and individuals are friendly and try to be helpful . Right now we are in a political upheaval and we seemingly have a mass shooting problem. 😎
