Understanding Cemetery Symbols #91 - Fraternal Organizations #5 IORM
When walking around cemeteries I look for interesting fraternal organizations, especially ones I haven’t seen an example of but know about. Tui Snider’s book, ‘Understanding Cemetery Symbols’ [tinyurl.com/e3uymkse] has quite a few of them but this is one that isn’t there. There are all types of different clubs, secret societies, and organizations that were once extremely popular. At least half of the populace was a member of one organization or another and by 1900 there were over 2000 groups. Some were simply drinking organizations for fun and a little debauchery, others had specific charitable goals, and others were political in nature. Most of these clubs/secret societies/organizations were popular because they provided services for their members and their families. Some of these clubs were for white men only as well were many women organizations. [1] The one I came across this time is the ‘Improved Order of Red Men’ which builds itself as Americas oldest fraternal organization. The problem here is the organization was growing as the US was conducting genocide, and after the 1890’s; Indian Schools were created to basically destroy their culture. See the ‘Cultural Appropriation? The Improved Order of Red Men?’ [shorturl.at/DhJrQ] and the video ‘American Holocaust Of Native American Indians: 2001 Documentary’ [shorturl.at/pgVqA] to get a better understanding of the historic situation.
As for the IORM, according to their webpage the organization dates back to 1765 and is descended from the Sons of Liberty. These patriot partisans (or in today’s terminology & from the British point of view; terrorist) concealed their identities as Indians and worked "underground" to help establish freedom and liberty in the early Colonies. The webpage continues to say they patterned themselves after the Iroquois Confederacy and its democratic governing body. After the War of 1812, the name was changed to the Society of Red Men and in 1834 to the Improved Order of Red Men. They kept the customs and terminology of Native Americans as a basic part of the fraternity. [2] Most would say, at the very least, this is cultural appropriation.
The Uhl family has been in the Albany area since the mid-19th century. William J Uhl was born in 1861. He was a clerk for the D. & H. Railroad for 45 years, retiring in 1933. He was a member of the Brotherhood of the Evangelical Protestant Church and of the
Improved Order of Red Men. He was survived by his son, Walter J. Uhl. His wife, Mrs. Emma B. Wagner Uhl predeceased him in 1918. [3]
As for a cultural historian and one who teaches about Native American History (Please see below Dr. RGST’s BOOKS ) I find this type of club pretty disgusting. It’s one thing to have been around in the 19th century, when the perceptions of truth were unfortunately different. But for an organization like this to still be in ‘business’ is pretty difficult to understand. Even the YMCA because of changing times and attitudes changed the name and design of the ‘Indian Guides’ club to the ‘Adventure Guides’ club. You would think a group of people could change the group especially when times are changing. Then on the other hand most groups like this are dying off. It’s just the idea of people dressing up to look like ‘Indians’ gives me great pause. Well, I hope you like the video and please leave a comment and of course, tell others. Thanks for watching!

@@The_Cultural_Historian_DrRGST Of course Sir. I very much enjoyed the video and appreciate informative Historical and Cultural content. Indeed, all places have issues. So many people seem to focus on "This isn't Perfection!!!!" when they go somewhere and then disparage the place entirely. People will go to Moscow, "Can you believe they only drink tea?!" People go to Sarajevo, "Everyone spoke Bosnian and all the letters were backwards!!!" People travel to Amsterdam, "They have traffic here??!? I thought it was just bikes and trains?! What a rip off!" You find what you are where you go. If you are interested, you find the interesting aspects of a place. If you are adventurous, you get into adventures. If you're from Manhattan and use complaining as your professional sport, then no place is good or has any good in it because it's not 103rd St and Broadway. "Can you believe there's no place in Istanbul to get a bacon egg and cheese?!?!" Yes....yes i believe that, it's Istanbul. A cause of death is not provided. The 1850 Census shows him as an 18 year old engineer living at home with his parents and siblings. The 1848 Rensselaer Institute "catalogue of students" lists him as a sub-graduate. The CE or GE after his name may relate to his engineering degree. Really enjoying your series on gravestones!

The General Society of the War of 1812 is for descendants of soldiers who fought in that War. I am a member of it through my 4th great grandfather. It's a lineage society like the DAR, Sons of the Confederacy, etc.

These Renaissance Faires for the cultural historian are fun, interesting but more like the Walmart of Ren Fairs. A place to find a few things you want and then just people watch. Beautiful family plot they have with steps leading upwards. It reminded me of Jackie Gleason's grave which has carved into the steps the words: "And Away We Go". Have a good week!

It is amazing the expense that must have been spent on these sites. The outcome is the same of course. What I find interesting is how forgotten the seem. Thanks for watching and commenting. You have a good week too! Be well - 😎

  • @The_Cultural_Historian_DrRGST

I find this type of gravestone completely different and it’s a really a nice way to be remembered by your loved ones and friends, apparently until you’re no longer remembered. It does seem as I walk through a cemetery there are a lot of untended graves except for the cemetery lawnmower. I hope you’re enjoying the series. Please, keep following along and I would really appreciate it if you would leave a comment. By the way, if you’re signed-in please consider subscribing to my channel. I would really appreciate it . . . and, as always, tell me what you think, or what you find interesting. Thank you!😎

Troy sure has changed, but some areas are coming back around. This does tend to be a rough area at night. I live across Oakwood on 15th. I actually love living in Troy. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😎

There's a lot there to see. I just did the C-130 and the flight line but the exhibit buildings are packed with history and it was rather cheap. Just $11/ea. Thanks for watching. . .😎

  • @The_Cultural_Historian_DrRGST

I hope you enjoyed the video. It was a great time, and our grandsons really liked it. I think you’ll like it too. We visited the two exhibit halls, and found they had a lot of hands-on exhibits. The video isn’t about our entire time there, just the C-130 tour and the flight line. There is a lot more there and it’s worth the visit. I partied a few times there back in the late 70’s …teenagers we were and it certainly was CREEPY!!!..Never vandalized anything in that respect,we were partiers not criminals of today!!!

It's so sad and when you see old photos it was fantastic. I like going over there because it's quiet. As for criminals - so many places I go are cover are covered with paint. Although, you will find a real artist among them. Thanks for watching and commenting. 😎

Sad to say..but Troy has definitely seen better days! My found memories are from 60-90s and it was certainly a much better place,of course time does change everything.Still I’ll always remember those good old days…

I moved to Troy in the late 90's and it was a rough place physically, but I must admit, it is looking better, and overall, the crime isn't as bad as people think. Yes. there are places you don't want to shuffle around after midnight but it's not bad. I feel pretty safe walking around my neighborhood at night. Overall, the city is getting better. A ways to go but . . .😎

That is my hometown. I was raised there and graduated from that high school back in 1998. Unfortunately, that bank closed down. It used to be called the community Bank. And yes, we have a mayor. Our mayors name is Sharon Lessard and the veterinarian sold his business and he is retired now

I hadn't either. What drew my attention to it was the name Gates with a gate on the stone. I thought at first it was a play on the name. Then I did research - thanks for watching.😎

Thanks for the Gates Ajar story. Albany Rural sure seems like it has a lot of twists, and turns with the 500 acre layout. I think the google street view driver kind of got lost while driving through it.
