  • Understanding Cemetery Symbols #87 - Flower Box Graves
    Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, NY
My wife and I were at the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, NY and were looking for different or interesting gravestones and we came across this type. In fact, when looking at it, it doesn’t really look like a grave at all but more like a flower bed. Looking at Tui Snider’s book, ‘Understanding Cemetery Symbols’ [tinyurl.com/e3...] we find they are called Flower Box Graves.
Flower Box Graves were a very Victorian idea. Raised rectangular shaped boxes were created to outline the perimeter of the grave and family members and friends would plant flowers and plants in them. A nice way to be remembered by your loved ones and friends If you find one at a child’s grave they are often called cradles. [1]
John Thomas Jr. owned a Premium Mill in Albany, New York, which milled coffee, spices, mustard, cream tartars, and items such as that. Like many other businesses during the Civil War, and because of the interruption of the banking systems and the lack of metal for coinage, as with other businesses, Thomas issued a coin as a means of providing small denomination currency to the local community. [2] [3]
I find this type of gravestone completely different and it’s a really a nice way to be remembered by your loved ones and friends, apparently until you’re no longer remembered. It does seem as I walk through a cemetery there are a lot of untended graves except for the cemetery lawnmower. I hope you’re enjoying the series. Beautiful family plot they have with steps leading upwards. It reminded me of Jackie Gleason's grave which has carved into the steps the words: "And Away We Go". Have a good week!

It is amazing the expense that must have been spent on these sites. The outcome is the same of course. What I find interesting is how forgotten the seem. Thanks for watching and commenting. You have a good week too! Be well - 😎
