- History of Earth - in brief - Paleozoo.
How old is the Earth? When did life first appear upon it? How did we come to be here? Questions as old as humankind.
History of Earth - in brief - an outline of the evolution of the planet from its Hadean origins to its Anthropocene present. A timeline of the history of life on Earth.
The Earth has undergone constant change in its 4.54 billion year history, with life evolving in response to those changes - in particular to the changing atmospheric compositions of carbon dioxide and oxygen. Species extinctions have been a natural part of the evolutionary processes of the planet throughout its long history, however there are now thought to have been at least 8 mass extinction events in the history of the Earth - each of major consequence to life on the planet and of import to our modern understandings of climate change.
There have been many extinction events, both great and small, but the most profound of these would be the End-Permian Extinction that closed the Palaeozoic era (~252 Ma). Also known as the Great Dying, it is thought that over 90% of all marine species and 70% of all terrestrial species became extinct. A rapid increase in surface temperatures towards the end of this period brought about a collapse in the carbon cycle - starving life on land and subsequently suffocating life in the oceans. No environmental niche was left unchanged by the Permian Extinction.
From the earliest ages of the planet - when microbial blooms spread around the globe - up to the radiation of Homo sapiens, life has repeatedly colonized every viable location on the planet. Life is nothing if not resilient and great extinctions serve to highlight this. Even if only a few isolated pockets of single-celled organisms survived a global extinction event - an event even more destructive than the Great Permian Extinction - life would continue on, evolving, adapting and radiating back across the world as soon as conditions allow.

It will never stop to creep me out the “UNKOWN CAUSE” as the Mass Extinction event plays out
Same here. Didn't know there was so many.
Yeah me and my dad theorize who or what has been here before on this planet. Not to sound like every other conspiracy theorist, but things like how different we are from other species that have been on earth and stuff, it’s almost unnatural really.
@@tarheelpro87 I wish he was right, that would be so cool and creepy lol
@@lorisceleste1860 same, we may never know in our lifetimes though sadly. But since the universe is still so young, maybe we really are the only intelligent species out here
It might be gamma ray bursts
One of the best history of Earth animations out there!
Appreciated.
The era transitions are amazingly done. They convey a rapid acceleration of time while still maintaining a clear point of reference
Appreciated
This is just amazing, I especially like the fact it has no music in the background, just pure silence in the outer space, beautiful and creepy at same times

The brown colour you see is the iron in the seabed rusting, as Photosynthesis by prehistoric bacteria released Oxygen into the oceans.
The Banded iron formations is a worldwide deposit of brown iron rust (iron oxide), suggesting that the whole earth started to become oxygenated at that time.
0:38
Before oxygen existed in the water, Iron reacts with water to make Green-coloured Iron(II) ions. In the presence of oxygen later, Green Iron(II) ions are oxidized into Brown Iron (III) ions.
This is absolutely amazing. I wish creators and palaeoartists got more recognition than the people which just practically do nothing all day and sit in front of a computer. Props to whoever is making these.
Very much appreciated.
@@Paleozoo I would also like to ask if you know about some of the organisms before the Ediacaran biota even appeared, like the Francevillian biota, because it would be absolutely mind boggling to see an animation of them!
I'm only a little familiar with the Francevillian biota but I was thinking of including reference to it in this latest revision. However I read a little further on the subject and decided that it was still a bit too contentious to be included at this stage.
@@Paleozoo what I was thinking about was the models that you make, maybe models of the Francevillian biota inhabitants? I saw this great depiction in which they were interpreted as simple transparent jellyfish-like beings, and one with them being sessile organisms with various shapes and sizes. Maybe you could make models based on those two interpretations?
@@danielaliviavochina11 Thanks for the suggestion. I can certainly add them to my list. Could you point to any articles?
this video always gives me hard chills. the ambience, the alien-like notes, the final string of text; this is so well done. thank you for uploading again!
Many thanks. That is very gratifying to hear.
I agree
The subtle ' GREENHOUSE EVENT ' is a nice touch at the end of the timeline...
yeah, I guess it’s about time we are nearing our extinction, and while it may seem like decades are long for us, on the grand scheme of things it’s really quick, especially considering this goes by millions of years, and it’s been 55 million years ever since mammals became the dominant species, so perhaps a new era will occur in the future
The level of detail of including the moon and actually changing how it looks over time, like how it had lava in the hadean period, and how big it is is amazing
Kinda creepy at the last one it doesn't say mass extinction but just says in red text "greenhouse event" and then just slowly fadeout
Especially gaining goosebumps when it prints UNKNOWN CAUSE
especially as you can see the four very slowly going down meaning the temperature is slowly rising to 15 degrees and over
this video feels like something youd see if you were a highly advanced alien in school
5:02
That Green House in Red creeps me out, a mass extinction event is coming
Mass extinction ongoing...
This has always been one of my favourite videos on CZcams and I was quite sad when I found out it was gone. Thank you for bringing it back 😊
Why is this horrifying at times
5:02
It kinda makes me chill when "Greenhouse event" appears on the right
I like how even the text sound panics at a mass extinction
The ending 😰
Thank you so much for the reupload!

I have been looking for this video for WEEKS. I remember watching it a year ago, and I just couldn't find it until now.
And now I'm realizing it was posted 2 weeks ago... what's going on here
Well it was a hard decision. A piece of work like this is deceptively complex - with numerous data points to be included. Over a period of time I became aware the original video contained a number of omissions and errors. I thought it was important to provide an update and correct these but CZcams does not work like that - you cannot simply update a posted video - you have to start again and repost. As I say it was a difficult decision as the original video was receiving heavy traffic - but I thought it had to be done.
@@Paleozoo still just as good as i remember it
Love the visuals and sound design. So simple yet creative
Much appreciated!
Our planet is truly magnificent
This takes me back. Boy, I hated when it was 4000°C.
Do you think one day you could publish those planet texture? I've been looking paleo textures for an ancient Earth for soOOooO long man!
Thank you for this video, it really changed my perspective on the earth and how we have evolved.
Your response is appreciated.
absolutely amazing video! you're criminally underrated, this deserves so much more views!
Thank you.
I wish more people could see videos like this, truly an amazing experience to see how much we've learned about Earth in such a short time. Such a rich history this planet has, for more than just the human race but the many stages the earth went through is mesmerizing. Thank you so much for creating this video, genuinely inspiring

This vid is so amazing!
But I remember it having millions of views…
This video is a masterpiece of the internet!
Almost goes without saying that I appreciate that comment.
The animations of time passing and the continents are really beautiful! Great representations of huge events like the Great Oxidation event. Very cool!
Your comments are appreciated.
So the Earth went through 9 mass extinctions. Two of them were unknown causes, one ice house event, one green house event, one asteroid impact, the great dying, one snowball Earth and an oxynegation event
loved this video!
Appreciated.
It's a little awkward to show the asteroid impact at 67 M years ago and the K-Pg extinction at 66. The extinction event happened immediately after the impact, not one million years later.
well, I highly doubt it was immediately but it most definitely didn't take 1 million years.
Maybe the results of the impact were still ongoing even after 1 mln years 🤔
Or the impact happened right before the timeline went into the 66 mya,
Something like 67000032 years ago to 66999871 years ago, lol
I love your videos
Amazing video😊
Amazing graphics.
Amazing work, thanks *so* much for sharing!
My thanks to you.
Damn pretty nice how there was green house event on the current times, rly shows the worlds issue
I like how when it said tool use it played a sound of a hammer and nail
Fantastic 💚🌍
amazing bro
I just can’t imagine the fact that we might encounter another mass extinction. And history will just repeat itself, and evolve a new species. So scary
It will never stop to creep me out the unknown cause

@@PaleozooWhy are you so gentle?

Am I having Deja Vu or did you uploaded this exact video last year
I saw it too :-P I believe I also made a comment about it
Not at all. There have been quite a few updates, inclusions and corrections. There has also been a reworking of the core animation and composite and an audio remix. This content is deceptively hard to get right - though I do now hope to not have to revisit.
@@Paleozoo oh nice :-) great content
Good morning from Romania .Beautiful.
Whyd this get taken down the first time?
Observation: every time the earth turns tan, a mass extinction event occurs
Ice Age: am I a joke to you?
@@TimberlakeTigerGirl Whoops, can’t forget about that (Probably the third mass extinction)
Wasn't this uploaded a long time ago?
Such an extremely interesting and amazing video! Did you noitce, the highest form of life of a particular era dies at an extinction event, and then a new era begins with a new higher specie. What does that say about our future?
If I had to guess I'd say AI. Not tomorrow maybe, or even a year from now, but coming. Evolution is not determinedly about us, it's about preserving information.

Holy fuck this is a lot to take in when you REALLY try to put this into perspective. Incredible, and also terrifying lol.
Corruptiosaurus the last dinos survived to this date. They evolved into human like species and they were currently roaming in a palace.
Fascinating to see the moon watching over us for all this time, mostly unchanged for billions of years
My one and only criticism is that it’s not much bigger in the sky during the Hadean
Cameraman never cease to amaze us wow just… wOw

Nostalgia...
It’s creepy because of the beeping and the red text
How did they know that the earth looks like that in many many many years?
Yey its back
You should make a prediction of the future earth
Isn't that video already uploaded? Anyway, though you're not here anymore, but I'm glad to be wrong. AMAZING work!
Many thanks. Yes I pulled the previous version down after reaching 4.5 million views - so as to apply corrections and updates. Just had to be done.
@@Paleozoo did you delete or private or unlist it?
I have made all earlier versions private as I read that was the best protocol for updating CZcams videos. Making a video private means that no one can see it but the CZcams algorithms still recognise the accrued views and data. That’s my understanding anyway.
To clarify that a bit further: Earlier views of previous versions are not counted with regards to any new video upload. You basically start from scratch. The private numbers are only regarded as part of your overall channel performance.
I wonder why this is unlisted
It will never creep me out when the "MASS EXTINCTIONS" pops up

I assure you not stolen - just many months of work. This is an updated version of "History of Earth - a portrait". This latest version has new inclusions, adjusted data points, one or two corrections, image re-composition and an audio remix - all standard fare for a project such as this.
