Earth's landmasses were not always what they are today. Continents formed as Earth's crustal plates shifted and collided over long periods of time. This video shows how today's continents are thought to have evolved over the last 600 million years, and where they'll end up in the next 100 million years.

Wow, the Indian subcontinent really slammed quickly into the Asian one, no wonder the Tibetan plateau and the Himalayan range are so incredibly tall.
It's cartoon.
The Tibetan plateau and the Himalayas are formed directly by the collision of the Earth with the Moon. czcams.com/video/CI2P3jzyftI/video.html This plateau is lunar crust. Please read the description.
The hotspot in the Indian ocean was the cause.
@@imho2278 reunion hotspot? How?
india went over the reunion hot spot or wait i think it was right where they were geographically during pangea or was it gwondana either way you get my point right?@@riddhiman2926
@@riddhiman2926Hotspots are independent from tectonic plates, but plates and their motions are powered by hotspots and the mantle upwelling beneath them. This being said, it doesn't mean that every single hotspot will end up creating a new plate boundary or change drift directions.
The Réunion hotspot is the cause for the formation of the Deccan Traps in India, but that happened 66 to 65 MYA, yet India started drifting northwards about 180 MYA. However, it seems that the drift did accelerate after the subcontinent went over the Réunion hotspot, so that could be what he meant.
I remember watching this in 1st grade and asking my mom if we could go on vacation to pangea instead of new jersey
*This is big brain time*

Note:
The Cambrian, Ordovician, Devonian, Permian, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous are NOT eras. They’re periods, which themselves are part of the actual eras, the Paleozoic (which includes the Cambrian to the Permian) and Mesozoic (which includes the Triassic to the Cretaceous, which you know as the age of dinosaurs)
The Eocene, Miocene and Pleistocene are also not eras, they’re epochs which are grouped in the Tertiary (Paleogene and Neogene) and Quaternary periods which themselves are also grouped in the Cenozoic era.
Sorry, I studied too much

Edit: I didn't think a funny remark like this would blow up and start an argument, but here we are. For those unaware, I was just noting that the creator used parts of Japan and the Philippines to represent future islands off the east coast, and I thought it was funny. I don't think the actual islands would somehow get over there!

...and we can’t even predict tomorrow’s weather
It's different komrade atmospheric conditions are unpredictable because they happen so fast, but we can tell what is going to happen with continents because of plate boundaries
I find it's pretty accurate up to 36 hours.
Just pretend we "totally understand" when the core of the planet will send a new burst of heat up in a new direction, changing the direction of continental drift. Then this doesn't seem like bullshit.
robot noir If we know the straight line continents took in the past 1mya, we should know the path in the next 1my.
Maybe for a million years, coz let's face it, there's not much noticeable movement in a tiny amount of time like that. Everything will be roughly where it is now in a million years. After all, there's been no noticeable movement in the last 1.8million years except a few ice-blocks melted.
Over longer periods of time, the path of the continents is not linear.
