When measurements go into “light years” I stopped paying attention... my brain couldn’t comprehend it anymore...
Well, the star that is closest to our own sun is about 4 light years away.
It means if you travel at the speed of light, it will take you X amount of years to get there.
I know the concept and method. It’s just an unfathomable distance. We have no real reference to appreciate/understand it. Example, “from the earth to the moon is equal to XXX times around the world.” Cuz that’s our biggest reference for distance. One light year would be aprox 236,520,000 times around the earth? At that distance... my brain just goes “it’s super duper far away”. Lol

Every time I see this video it makes me fall in love with astrophysics all over again. Because it’s so easy to get desensitised to the vast scales of the universe when you’re calculating stuff about it all the time. Like I use units like Mpc (3.26 million light years) in my homework at uni all the time, but actually seeing it like this just makes me go like “oh, right. damn.”

It's important to keep in mind that between us and the spent cores of dead stars, are stars that are still shining.
The dead star at the center of the Univers is surrounded by 7 donut sized rings, that if flattened, would form walls of Stars between us and it... like shields.
