What an epic epic reaction Eric! Often an overlooked madonna album, I think MDNA has many moments of pure brilliance. Gang bang is dark, experimental yet full of humour making it a great cure for post breakup rage lol. I also love Falling free and think it easily lies amongst madonnas best! Her lyricism is so beautiful on that one, and watching your reaction to it just gave me goosebumps

I really enjoy this album, I think fans don’t love it because it felt very on trend and we all want Madonna to set the trends still, but it’s a good dance album. It’s my go to for gym. The problem with Madonna is her catalogue is so amazing we have very high expectations of her.

  • @RebelHe4rt
    @RebelHe4rt Před 3 lety +19

I love your reactions to Madonna’s music. To me, Madonna does not have a single bad album. She served on them all. She gets negativity from people who expect her to remake Ray of light of confessions over and over. She has reinvented her sound and image in every single era. I can’t wait to see what’s coming next ❤️

The live performance of 'Gang Bang' is, in typical Madonna fashion, a controversial masterpiece, because it translates the violent sinister vibe of the song very well and explicitly. Great review, btw :)

  • @NocturneSoul
    @NocturneSoul Před 3 lety +18

I never understood why those extra songs didn't make it to the standard version, and now I understand why. In those songs she puts her anger aside, that anger she displays in Gang Bang and I Don't Give A, and sympathizes with her ex. Songs like I F Up and Best Friend come from those moments when the anger goes away and you just feel heartbroken. Thanks Eric for that!
I have a few fun facts: 1. in "Superstar" her daughter Lola sings the backing vocals. Let's remember that the song "Little Star" from the Ray of Light album was dedicated to Lola. And so now that she's grown it fits perfectly that she sings in "Superstar".
    2. The acoustic version of "Love Spent" features some lines in Latin like "e pluribus unum te (among many, one)", and it sounds so beautiful. I actually prefer the acoustic over the album version all the way. You should check it out.
    3. "Gang Bang" was thought to have a video directed by Tarantino, but he was filming a movie by that time and so that project never came to be. Instead, she created a very cinematic performance of that song in her MDNA Tour. It's like a movie scene live. She's in a hotel room where she's being attacked by mysterious men and she shoots them all, and you can see the blood being splattered all over the screens behind her.To me, her most violent and dark performance ever. Please do check that out.
    4. Another dark moment from that tour is the "Best Friend/Heartbeat" interlude, where a group of dancers called "the bone breakers" break each other's bones in front of a cemetery being shown on a screen. Super dark moment.
    5. Falling Free uses Celtic chords. Which makes sense since Guy Ritche is scottish. To me that song is a goodbye song, like The Power of Goodbye. The lyrics "when I lose the need to know, then we're free, free to go", means that sometimes when we break up we keep stalking that person, trying to know what he's doing with his life, but then you realize that's just a demon you carry with you, that is keeping you from moving on. And once you can let that person go and not knowing anything about him, then you're free, free to go. It's a sad realization.
    6. And finally, yes, Guy Ritchie was a manipulative fuck, who emotionally and psychologically abused Madonna, making her feel that his mistreatment to her was her fault. And when they broke up he took 50 millions from her, and told to the press "at least I made some money". Imagine hearing that from the guy who was your husband for 8 years and is the father of your son. What an asshole. That explains the song "Love Spent" very well. Oh and her song "Voices" from her Hard Candy album talks about Guy and his toxic manipulative side.

Another interesting point about MDNA is that it had a different trackless prior to when it was released. If I remember correctly, the bonus tracks were in this order; Love Spent, I F**ked Up, Beautiful Killer, Best Friend. The standard album included Birthday Song. Brilliant reaction as always. The divorce album. Mixed, angry, a little hopeful but also deeply sad. Madonna playing catch-up with all of her new pop pretenders and also somehow remaining relevant. It's a very interesting record. "Gang Bang" is a reworked version of "Bang Bang" written by Mika (Madonna has recorded the original version). The album version is very different from the original and when Madonna saw all the people on the credit, she said with irony :

Great reaction Eric! This album has some not-so-great tracks for sure but overall I don't dislike it as much as some of her fans do. I think vocally "Falling Free" is one of her best songs. Some singers start to lose the quality in their voice after many years of singing and this is 30 years into her career so I found that song impressive and a testament to how well she took care of and in fact improved her voice.

I love how this is the 2nd time you gave me a fully new perspective on the record, and that really never happens otherwise. I personally never understood the hate for this record, I think it had more to do with it's commercial failure then the actual content. And the fact that it was represented by three - if we are gonna be honest - really mediocre singles. I never felt like those three tracks belong on this album (the way you tied them into the storyline - I never got that). I thought she had the rest of the album ready and then realized she has no singles to release from it and phoned them in as an afterthought. I'm not saying they are not enjoyable, but in the context of when they were released, if madonna was releasing a pop/dance song you expected hung up or music or vogue... Even hard candy (the only record I find uninspired) opened with a clear banger. Noone expected Give me all your luvin to be her best effort especially after 4 years hiatus. Which is a shame because it overshadowed the fact that she was being open and vulnerable and confused and angry and well... (imperfect) human for what felt like the first time ever on the rest of the record, and I will always appreciate that. And another reason for it being underrated is definitely because it was EDM, and everyone and their mother was doing EDM back then. Here is the thing - you might be missing out that on almost all the records prior madonna actually pioneered many soundscapes in mainstream. She always had an impeccable ear for what will sound fresh and exciting, and always found unknown producers to bring something unique. She never sounded like what's on the charts. Like... There was nothing like Ray of light on charts back then, or Music, or Erotica. When you say yes it sounds like 90s - it sounds like what other artists did after she brought that sound to the charts. It was always other pop stars jumping on her bandwagon and never the other way around. Unfortunately that changed with Hard candy. And then I think most of us hoped she went to this 4 year hiatus to not come back before she discovers something new and inspiring, just for her to come back jumping on even more stretched out bandwagon for the 2nd time in a row! Now yes, revisiting it, it doesn't deserve the hate it got, but back in the day it was a letdown. That's also why Madame X is regarded as return to form because she finally sounds unique (in pop landscape) again. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!

I agree with your comment. I came here after a family funeral-takes my mind off of serious stuff! I definitely agree with you on this album. The younger folks have to understand that when we say that madonna or Janet Jackson's work was groundbreaking truly was. It's interesting to see or hear younger folks think that their albums are mediocre. I'm like there was no Beyonce, Asaiah, or Taylor Swift out yet lmao! That always cracks me up when teenagers criticize their work. My niece has high friends who said it sounds old-fashioned, but are listening to teena taylor- she always pays tribute to janet lol.

Really enjoyed this Eric! Although most of these songs are about her divorce from Guy Ritchie, I personally think "Best Friend" is about her first husband and true love Sean Penn. The clues are the references to drinking (which is also noted in the video for "Oh Father") and the title Best Friend. If you may recall on the song True Blue (dedicated to Sean Penn) she sings "I'm so excited cause you're my best friend"... some great tracks on this record (and some duds ;-P

  • @pedroc.ortiztomassini5792

MDNA is not her best work, but is very enjoyable. It has some of her best songs, like Gang Bang, Falling Free and Love Spent. To me the comercial failure had more to do with the wrong choice of singles (Give Me All Your Lovin’ is terrible & I don’t like M.Solveig production) and the ageism she began to suffer from the radio progammers and younger generations of music fans.
Finish the albums first, so you can dive in the compilations and appreciate that many single versions are a bit different from the albums.
You have very good insights in your critiques, many regarding Madonna, right on the mark. As a bonus, you are an adorable young man, and your spanish is very good.

I watch a lot of reaction videos, and I’ve noticed this album gets positive reactions from people who came of age in the late 2000s, when EDM was at its height.
I never connected with this album, although your perspective certainly makes me see it in a different light.
You haven’t listened to soundtrack song Beautiful Stranger from Ray of Light era, produced my William Orbit. I’m A Sinner is humorously identical musically.
I found much of the album to be about 2-3 years late with its sound, while not adding anything new or interesting to the landscape.
I found the lyrics to be some of her most awkward. Songs like “I f*cked up”, “gang bang”, “birthday song”, give me all your luvin” and “I don’t give a..” to be almost unlistenable.
I do enjoy Some Girls, Girl gone wild, and I’m
Addicted. But I’ve never liked how it was mixed, it sounds very compressed to me.
Now I have to revisit it and see if I’ve softened to it. It’s approaching it’s 10 year anniversary…

She said the tour for this album is meant to be a journey from darkness to light. That being the case, the album should have reflected this too. Here is what I feel should have been the final track list:
    1. Intro (Act of Contrition)
    2. Girl Gone Wild (using the dance break from the tour)
    3. Gang Bang
    4. Beautiful Killer (lead single)
    5. Love Spent
    6. Best Friend (using the heavier crunchy production as seen on your)
    7. I’m A Sinner (using the Kalican trio outro from tour)
    8. I ****ed Up
    9. I’m Addicted
    10. Masterpiece
    11. Falling Free

I have a soft spot for this album, primarily because it's the one people give the most flack! Gang Bang, I'm Addicted, I'm A Sinner, Love Spent, Masterpiece, and Falling Free just all make me so happy.
Btw Bang Bang is originally a Cher song. Nancy Sinatra covered it less than a year after the original.

Glad you like Gangbang! Madonna mentioned she wanted to have a video for it and have Quentin Tarantino direct it, but sadly never happened. However if you go check out this mash-up: czcams.com/video/HPCdBJMkN5A/video.html
It uses clips from the Kill Bill movies so you’ll get an idea of what a video might have looked like.
The mashup also includes parts of Nancy Sinatra’s song Bang Bang that you mentioned!
If I remember well Madonna’s manager saw the mashup at one point and said he loved it.

  • @dalee72
    @dalee72 Před 3 lety +1

Gang Bang was definitely inspired and influenced by her divorce from Guy Ritchie. They didn't have a prenup because they were married in Scotland and the UK government doesn't allow prenups. So Guy was given somewhere between $92 - $98 million dollars. He didn't contribute any financial assistance to the wedding and the marriage even though he was a hands on father.
I think Superstar was about one or all of her children.
The look on your face when you were introducing Gang Bang and saying that Madonna should have had a prenup when analyzing I Don't Give A and for the Birthday Song.
I think I'm a Sinner is about her poking fun at her religious, strict Catholic upbringing and trying to reconcile and make peace with it and being a bit rebellious and playful at the same time.
Although not one of my top 10 Madonna albums but my favorite songs on this album are Turn Up The Radio, I'm A Sinner, Masterpiece, Falling Free and Bestfriend.
Btw what lyrics in Some Girls reference Like a Virgin?
And what are the 2 other songs that has the word spanking or reference to spanking besides Hanky Panky and the Birthday Song?
I always enjoy your reactions because you give very astute, insightful and well thought out analysis of the songs from the lyrics' meaning, interpretations, references to other songs and the production of the music.

About Gang Bang, there's an early version of it, it was called Bang Bang Boom (or Bang Boom) and it was written by Mika. I'm guessing they changed the title when it was rewritten, but they wanted a title that sounded similar, just not the exactly same title and that's why they went with Gang Bang.
Some of the lyrics of that demo are retained but it has a very different vibe. You can find it on YT but it's sung by another vocalist, there used to be a version of it with Madonna singing but i was unable to locate it.

We could make a case about both this AND Hard Candy being her Ritchie divorce albums. Hard Candy certainly paints a picture of a relationship in the process of blossoming and then falling apart. This was also highlighted in not so subtle ways during the Sticky & Sweet Tour. And then there's Like a Prayer, of course.

Thank you for reacting to the album. After accepting MDNA for its "unfinished" sound and for what it was and wasn't ('Ray of Light' or 'Music'), I liked most of the songs and played the album quite a bit. My least favorite track on the standard release was "Gang Bang" (it was monotonous) and, although violent, worked well in the concert. (Also, 'Birthday Song' was the worst, overall.) 'Masterpiece,' is beautiful and perhaps the best track on the album. I enjoyed this album and its energy!

It´s kinda funny that you had that reaction with MASTERPIECE, cause you mention that she has “to steal” someone… funny thing is that actually she stoled that person, listen She’s Madonna by Robbie Williams, that song is based on that story (and produced by the Pet Shop Boys) the chorus says “I love you baby but face it she’s Madonna, no man on earth could say that he don’t wanna…” according to Robbie, Guy Ritchie told that to her ex when he leaved her for Madonna 😅

If you're going to react to a compilation album, I highly rec "GHV2"; it's a phenomenal collection that covers my favorite eras of hers and also includes a cut from her turn as Eva Peron in the film adaptation of 'Evita'. I have blazed through your Madonna reactions; I came to love Madonna from her "Like a Prayer" era onward because that was when she really stopped leaning on other songwriters and embraced her own confessional side, and I feel like you have a keen eye toward her use of metaphor to get to a deeper meaning. That said, I know on your channel you mainly do pop music, but I would *love* to see you react to the rock band Evanescence. Amy Lee has this same very poetic, soul-baring lyricism and I think you'd really enjoy it and also I'd love seeing what you'd have to say about her songs.
