Track: To Have And Not To Hold
Album: Ray Of Light (1998)
First time listening to this track from the 1998 album Ray Of Light. I am hoping to get into more of her album tracks / deep cuts. please suggest some in the comments!
Love these non-single Madonna reactions. She has so many great songs. I'd recommend "Sanctuary" from Bedtime Stories album
Oh yes Sanctuary and Love Tried To Welcome Me as well maybe?
I'm absolutely amazed that Sanctuary was not released as a single. Would easily have been a hit at the time
Sanctuary is a good recommendation as it was a sign post to where she was heading musically. It was an early sign that she was being heavily influenced by British music and British musical artists. At the time of writing recording Sanctuary with Nellee Hooper and Marius De Vries (Marius would later work with M and William Orbit on Ray of light) she was hanging out with the Sneaker Pimps.
This is one of Madonna’s all-time best songs. That trance you’re in at the beginning of the song is exactly how I feel every time.
Bossanova is the influence you were trying to pinpoint!
Madonna is on the Rolling Stone List of the Greatest song writers of all time at num 56 she should be in the top 10
The fact Madonna hasn’t won oscars for some of her movie songs as well as not that many awards, if you think about her brilliance, is an obvious patriarchal move from those in power, once again hiding the brilliance this rebel has created over all these decades ❤
Two of her movie songs has won an Oscar.
She did not write the lyrics to either of them, but still, it is her vocals and she also performed them live at the Oscars.
Ugh this entire album is a masterpiece. Frozen, little star, power of goodbye, and to have and not to hold are the shining stars imo
In an interview Madonna said that in To Have and Not To Hold, what emerges is a delight in the most genuine Brazilian Bossa Nova, an open homage to her passion for the music of João and Astrud Gilberto.
I love that. And it's not a straight copy, it's filtered through what she and William Orbit were doing, so it's a totally modern take on it
And of course, still requesting "Waiting" from Erotica (1992)
People are often surprised to hear that Madonna is a great lyricist and producer ..the producers she works with always say it's a fully collaborative experience and that she has a great ear for melody. Try Issac from the confessions album or dark ballet from the excellent Madame X album
I'll definitely get to Isaac, thanks!
@@bridgethegapreactions ❤
What an ear!! Indeed, the rythm has a very spanish-latin influence!
You deserve more views and more subscribers mate. Amazing reaction. Bravo! Paradise Not For Me live Confessions tour please. I know you've heard the song but this song reworked live is just as good as the studio version just different.
Thank you! I will get to that one
YEAHHHH!!!!! YOU DID IT
I guess what you call Spanish influence is actually Brazilian cause this song started from a mixture of Brazilian samba and bossa nova. The whole ray of light album is a materpiece but this song is simply beautiful.
May be is a bit too much but there are many demos of Madonna that finally weren't part of the albums. Some.of them are simply amazing and you should take them.into account. A recommendation: tragic girl ❤
Other songs to react to: where life begins , voices, like it or not , I want you, gone, time stood still
It started but it became in some other thing. Spanish influences, yep!
@@angelmatematico45 probably but listen to this early demo . It's definitely a Brazilian samba : czcams.com/video/vygdXHNauDM/video.html
Great reaction to a great track. Give it a try at Mer Girl and Falling Free, both by Madonna
No one ever talks about Falling Free and it's one of her most beautiful ballads!
One of my favorite pop songs of all time…its perfection.
No one ever credits William Orbit, this album is all him. He took her to a whole new level.
Its a very intense and a very sad song. I think its a love interest that you can't quite have or maybe unrequited love. The lyrics are superbly written and I think this is one of the best songs shes ever recorded.
Very much enjoying your Madonna reactions! Keep ‘em coming!
Another compelling reaction!
Madonna loves latin culture, so you'll find its influence in many of her songs (This song also has bossa nova influences).
She once said she must have been latin in another life.
To change to a more dancing song i suggest *Impressive Instant* from the album *Music* . Originally intended to be the fourth single of the album, the release was cancelled due to a _disagreement_ between Madonna and her recording company. Finally Warner Bros. released it in the United States but _only_ as a *promotional single* (like so many other songs in Madonna's career.) Released only in the US, it was a popular dance hit, reaching the top of the *Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play* chart, and staying atop for two consecutive weeks.
My all time favourite song! I can listen to this song on repeat any day since the release ❤
There's a feeling of resignation, a feeling of accepting there's something you can't change. It's a bitterwseet feeling. It's sad, and hopeless, but acceptance and resignation can set you free. There's a line she whispers that goes "Ahahu purusakaram", the language is sanscrit, taken from the song Shanti/Ashtsngi, and it means accepting that you want something you can't have.
I find each track on ROL amazing, so I'm thoroughly enjoying your reactions to them! Include "Has To Be"!
I’m living for these deep cuts. Love your reviews for these underrated Madonna songs. I’d suggest from the same album: Skin and Sky Fits Heaven. From the Music album: Gone and American Life: X-Static Process and Easy Ride.
Please do Check out Spanish Eyes from 1989. About racism when standing up for equality was not that trendy and supported. Great lyrics and musicianship as well as Amazing songwriting.. Truly one of her best ballads along with Live To Tell
One of my all time fav songs been listening to that specific song since it came out in 1998. Still to this day I listen almost every day. It's so relaxing. What r u thoughts on Mer girl last song on the album and the extra lp version Has to be. Great songs
Queen Madonna 👑🇧🇷
One of the things that wasn’t mentioned is that since this song has such a sad lyrical tone, M added the chant from Ashanti/Shanti in the background to create a positive mood in the song.
Another great one! Please react to "X-static process" from her "American life" album
That one will be up soon for sure.
Such a great song from ROL. Try “Forbidden Love” and “Sanctuary” from Bedtime Stories, both are ear candy!
Glad you react to the one I recommended! So spiritual, I really attached to the lyrics
From the American Life album (2003), you should react to "Intervention" and "Easy Ride"
Brazilian Bossa-Nova
there's a bonus track called "has to be " wich I think was only on the Japanese edition of ray of light, great track
I love Love how you choose the lesser known Madonna songs. You're reactions are so honest and real. thats what we need more in life. thank you! Are you single?
Please react to "Spanish Eyes" from the "Like A Prayer" album.
Dear Lord this is beautiful 👍💙👊😱thx so much , Zane
I hear that Spanish thingy too. Thanks amigo, insightful. 🎉
It’s been so long since I’ve sat down and listened to each of the tracks on this album. I’m really enjoying listening to your reactions while being reintroduced to them all. I’ve always loved the song, Little Star. It was written for her daughter, Lourdes. It’s a beautiful simple song, and another feast for the ears sonically.
✌🏻🙂✌🏻
Perfect song 👏👏👏👏
This song is not Spanish-inspired, but it has elements from Brazilian Bossa Nova music. Madonna had declared that on an interview already.
You are right about the Spanish influence...is call BossaNova
Madonna on Bossa Nova 🇧🇷😍
Please, "Skin" should be the next. Is from the same album 🙂
My favorite song from RoL 😍
I love how you are amazed by each tracks haha the more you listen to the album and the more you're like "omg masterpiece" and YES it is, i'm totally under the spell of that album tbh my favorite pop album of all time... i can't
Your Madonna reactions are great! Keep them coming!
Oh you also need to hear “Sanctuary” from “Bedtime Stories”, it is a hidden gem in that album.
Yep! I've done a reaction to Sanctuary/ Bedtime Story on Patreon. The Madonna album I'm reacting to in full this month is Bedtime Stories and I posted a reaction to the Bedtime Stories official video last, and the Brit Awards performance last week. All amazing, I love what I've heard from her, post-Erotica, pre-Ray Of Light.
I love your reaction 😍. Please react to "Skin" from RoL album too ♥
HOW WONDERFUL!!!
I totally agree with your reaction, I subscribed, liked and now ….👍😀👊zane
You may have noticed, at the end of each chorus when she says “you’re to have, not to hold”, she also
repeats part of the Ashtangi prayer (from track #8), saying _”auahu purushakaram”_ …I don’t know how to spell it phonetically. I’ll have to look up the translation again and see if it’s relevant to this song.
I would also suggest “tragic girl” from the Rebel Heart outtakes. Brilliant. Simple. Personal. Sad.
So sorry for the gross, humiliating "collaborations" of recent time. Today she proves that she has no respect for herself and her audience. Anyway this is a gem and your react so rare.
Your reaction is so FUCKING AMAZING 💯👌
If you follow Madonna long enough, you'll find that she just LOVES juxtapositions.
That's how she approaches everything she does. Writing, producing, fashion, videos, tours, everything.
Ray of Light (The album) combines electronic sounds with conventional live instruments.
Her fashion choices show both femenine and masculine details (Most of the time)
And in her tours, she does things like wearing Military attire to perform HOLIDAY. (A celebration song about letting loose)
And finally, in "To Have and Not to Hold" she contrasts a rather happy melody with a tragic situation, but even beyond that, the way the song is produced, allows the listener to sort of EXPERIENCE something Madonna has always warned us about: "We all want what we KNOW is not good for us". So in this case, we the listener feel drawn to the song by the sweet sounds in the PRODUCTION, only to get hit by heartbreaking LYRICS, but we keep on listening because it sounds so good!! ( "Like a moth to a flame, ONLY I am to blame" )
Bossa nova influences 🇧🇷
one of her best albums
You're right. Good ear. There is a Spanish / girl from ipanema/bossa nova feel to it. It's the double bass and the drum kit mainly. And that tango-ish guitar in the right speaker. It would be awesome of you could also check out Kylie Minogue "Good Life" which I think is like the anti-dote to Madonna's message in this song. Kind of like a response. It's really fascinating how Kylie's lyrics kind of resonate with these.
That's a great idea. I'm about as familiar with Kylie as I am with Madonna. I'll hopefully do that one soon, thanks!
@@bridgethegapreactions Awesome 🙌
Loving your Madonna reactions. Maybe check out Drowned World/Substitute For Love, Devil Wouldn’t Recognise You, Mer Girl or Skin. The lead single from the Ray of Light Album is Frozen and it’s gorgeous - if you don’t know it, you’ll love it. Do you like dance music too? Madonna has dabbled expertly in so many musical styles and genres.
I don't listen to a lot of dance-y stuff, but as long as there's a good song in there, I'll give it a go!
@@bridgethegapreactions Well start with something like Skin from Ray of Light or Future Lovers from Confessions on a Dancefloor. Be interested to see what others suggest.
@@colinmackillop I think Skin absolutely
“To break my fall” not to “Break my heart” She sang earlier in the song… “I’m walking on a wire, and there’s no one at all to beak my fall”
I agree, "To break my fall" is what she said.
Another beautiful song with new details you discover Every time 💝 So sad and dreamy. «To break my fall» is the text at the end.
I have such an affinity for Madonna and your reactions melt my heart!! Very good job! Thank you!
You are very welcome, thank you!
I definitely hear the Latin influenced rhythm too!!
Please react to "Mer Girl". Really unique song..i think you'll enjoy it.
It's not a spanish influence,it's a Bossa Nova dê um Brazil influence, she said um many interviews that is fan of João Gilberto,Tom Jobim and Astrud Gilberto, all of them are great names of Bossa Nova music
Aha, that's it! I went through a big phase in my 20s of listening to a lot of Caetano Veloso, Tom Ze, Os Mutantes, etc... so I guess that's what I was recognising, thanks!
@@bridgethegapreactions yeah,it's from you remember of course,Caetano and all the others you told about are great artists and inspired Madonna
Can’t wait to hear more reactions of her massive collection! Thank you for doing them 🙏💕
I love this song 💙
Please react to Easy Ride or Has to Be
Easy Ride will be up tomorrow hopefully
Inspirada por Brazil 66....Bossa Nova!!! Madonna sempre maravilhosa!!!
The Spanish feel is legit. During this era she and Ricky Martin did a duet "Be Careful (With My Heart) / Cuidado (Con Mi Corazon) which appears on Ricky's self-titled album in 1999. The song was co-written by Madonna, Ricky and William Orbit, produced by Madonna and William. It has a moody feel similar to this song.
If I unscientifically list the requests i can remember, off the top of my head, I get: easy ride, x-static process, mer girl, Isaac, has to be, waiting, skin, sky fits heaven, candy perfume girl... have I missed off anything obvious?
No. Spoiler alert: as Madonna sings in "Sky Fits Heaven" - "it's a very good place to start" These are good...for now :P
But I will keep suggesting "He's A Man" till it happens :)
Thank you for the reaction and I'm looking forward to the next one!
Picture quality has been a bit dodgy on some of my vids recorded without natural light. Should be a bit better from now on. Adjust your Settings for 2160p30fps
No complaints because it's the honesty and the thoughtfulness in your reactions that are the real quality here man. Also thought I'd throw my hat in for a reaction request. Toad the Wet Sprocket being perhaps one of the forgotten true gems of the 90s, hoped you could do the song Crazy Life, it has a deep back story and an unbelievably catchy sound. If it's possible, I'd love to see someone react to that on CZcams because nobody's reacted to it yet. You'd be the first.
@@RedceLL1978 That's appreciated thank you! I'll do that TTWS requested - I haven't heard anything at all!
😍😍😍😍
This is hands down the weakest track on this album, which tells you how brilliant this whole album is.
