The glass Prison is a bottle, this song is about alcoholism. Progressive music is about progress, advancing and trying new stuff by using different structures and patterns in the songs, distancing them from "common" music.

To add to this, I feel like progressive rock defines a genre where each song progresses as it goes. It tells a story; not just basic 4/4 timing throughout..

Progressive or Prog rock/metal is characterized by intricate song structures with varying rhythms/time signatures and highly technical playing. Songs are often long and a blend of genres/influences are used. Opeth is my favorite prog metal band. Check out the song "Serenity Painted Death" by them.

I can understand why a lot of people don't particularly like Dream Theater's style but no one can deny that the amount of talent and technicality in their music is basically unmatched by any single artist or band in metal, and that has been the case for years. I'm not their biggest fan but every time I hear a song or watch a live video I'm amazed.
They get to be 'a bit' too much. I remember listening to them a lot for about 5 years and suddenly pretty much stopped. To this day I can't listen to a whole album anymore and haven't checked much of what they released after 2003 or so. It's just exhausting. But yes, they are phenomenal musicians. Went to music school in the late 90's-early 00's, we were all very much into it.

John Petrucci is one of the best metal guitarist, it's amaizing what he can. All of them are actually on another level. I saw them live a couple of times, it's jaw dropping what they can.
He's one of the best guitarists period. His raw skill and incredible consistency is something even the best guitarists in the world aspire to have.

Nightwish might be known for their stellar vocalists, Dream Theater is known for having arguable the best 4 instrumentalists. John Pettruci (Guitar), John Myung (Bass), and Mike Portnoy (Drums) Attended the Berklee College of Music, while Jordan Rudess (Keyboard) attended Juilliard School of Music. So their skill and technical level is on another planet compared to anything mainstream. Their songs often feature longer instrumental sections as they often use their instruments to tell the story, not just the lyrics.
Some good recommendations for the next song would be Learning to Live and Breaking all Illusions. I would hold off on Metropolis Pt1 and The Dance of Eternity until you're a bit more use to their style. Many reactors who dive right into those songs are often put off by the songs as they're use to very progressive songs. Once you're use to the proggy songs, you should venture into the epics like A Change of Seasons, Octavarium, and The Count of Tuscany.
The first 3 members mentioned are all from Long Island NY. The guitar player and the bassists were H.S. friends from Kings Park Long Island towards the north eastern end. They met the drummer when they went to Berkley and were amazed to discover he is from Long Beach Long Island which is on the south shore like an hour away or so.
Tbh i wasnt introduced to progressive b4 i heards the Metropolis, but i was sucked right into it, so i dunno, it is not an "easy" music, but it is def one of their best perfomances

I remember back when I discovered I like these guys, someone played "A Change of Seasons" on a jukebox, and I kept going back to make sure it was the same song because it was over 23 minutes long! A few days later I had most of their albums, and a couple of their DVDs. The first time I saw the DVD, my brain almost exploded, and all I could do was laugh maniacally because it was something my mind just couldn't comprehend as reality!
I love it when laughter is the only option because your body just has to get out the emotion and it's laugh or cry. That's the mark of powerful music. I remember that's the reaction I had the first time I played music with a drummer. It was so intense compared to just me and a friend jamming on guitar in a garage that all I could do was laugh. It had to come out, it was just overwhelming.
Whoever recommended the Glass Prison hit the nail on the head for a first DT listen, nice one man and yeah they do absolutely kill it when they play live!! I've seen em twice, two of the most epic shows I've ever seen I could hardly think afterwards hahaha

I love SF, but IMO knowing the other 12 step songs helps you appreciate SF much more than if you didn't know them.

Train of Thought is their heaviest album. It's technically insanity will punch your heart out your back and shove it down your throat. Part two of The Glass Prison is on Train of Thought. It's called This Dying Soul. It's also heavy and technical beyond words can describe.

I saw him in a G3 show with Satriani and Uli Jon Roth (Scorpions). It was such a big honor to see them live, especially Petrucci. Not from this world

Octavarium by them is crazy - 24 minutes long, it really does feel like five songs in one that just seamlessly transition from one to the other.
Dark Eternal Night is an awesome song; John Petrucci, their guitarist, calls it "the Five Guys of riffs" lmao.
So, that "white noise" at the beginning of this track (which is the opening track to this album) is the sound hear at the END of their previous album's final track... So this song kind of continues from the previous Dream Theater release in a way. There's an actual musical term for this but I can't remember what it is.
...except it had nothing to do with this song lyrically or anything... completely different artistic ideas. That last album before this one BTW (called Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory) is KILLER from beginning to end. It's supposed to be one long story and one long song from start to finish (a.k.a. concept album) that you are supposed to hear from beginning to end to get get the most out of that album.

I have seen them live 5 times (it should be 6 if it wasn't for damn COVID!) and they have been pretty much flawless each time. Mike Portnoy, the drummer in this song and John Petrucci, the guitarist, look so comfortable playing you'd think it was easy! You should check out some of their live vids and see what I mean for yourself. They are virtuosos, highly skilled, highly talented and with a huge knowledge of musical theory behind them.
This is one of my fav songs by DT. There's so many great ones by them, but Glass Prison just always stood out as one of my favs. Thanks for doing this one. One of my personal favs on live performances is a song called Acid Rain by Liquid Tension Experiment. LTE is 3 of the core members of DT (drummer, guitarist, keyboardist) that released a couple albums of solely instrumental songs. The bassist was swapped out for another fantastic player for the LTE projects, but the music still has the essence of DT. The Acid Rain performance is sooooooo crazy. Enjoy my dudes!

One of the things to add to your "to do" list...a live version of pretty much any Dream Theater song. To help put into context what they are able to do live. There are some very interesting things to potentially watch for...when the keyboardist and guitarist are doing a call and response or playing the same thing at the same time...or when the guitarist and the bassist are playing the same thing at the same time. It's definitely fun to watch and to listen to.
Speaking of their live performance, in the intro and after the song was over, y'all mentioned how complex the song was and what a challenge it might be to perform live. I won't disagree with you. But, speaking of context, know that this would be one song of a 2.5+ hour concert. They're all like that in complexity...some more complex than others...some not.

I agree about not checking out any live performance that doesn't have Portnoy playing drums, but not because of Portnoy. James LaBrie, the lead singer, hasn't been the most consistent in their recent live performances. Anything from their Radio City Music Hall live show or earlier is fine.

This was the first song I heard from DT back in the day!! DT is one of my favorite bands!! 🤘🏻
These dudes have been around since 1988 and average releasing an album every 2 years or so. They are actually much bigger outside the USA than they are here. They have so many very good and very intricate songs it's hard to pick any one or ten. This song is one of their more complicated pieces but by no means is it an exception to what they can do. They also do some mellower songs that are actually very good as well. I would suggest something live by them so you can see their immense talent. They have plenty of live videos so you should have no problem finding something.

They're live performances are note for note, from the studio recordings. Their musical memory is amazing. You really need to WATCH the next song from a live performance to truly appreciate the musicianship from these guys. Anything from the live BluRay DVD Breaking the 4th Wall-Live from the Boston Opera House, is well worth the watch. Love Tool, but they can only dream of playing to the complex levels that these guys do. Cheers!

I would say progressive rock/metal is defined as technical and melodic. Arguable longer songs, a lot of solos, possibility to craftier creativity such as concept albums, time signature changes, tempo changes and a lot of genres incorporated or infused into the music. Progressive rock/metal (not to be confused with progressive house/trance, nor progrock for that matter) can be very mellow or heavy and it can vary within each song themselves. Chord progression and build ups are quite a big focus too. The musicians in these types of bands are typically extremely talented, to the extent they're portrayed as virtuoso musicians. You got one thing right though, yes, progressive rock/metal is the type of music you can actually FEEL. The Glass Prison is a great example of fundamental progressive metal that's quite rough, but it's merely scratching the surface of Dream Theater's portfolio. Keep on digging into Dream Theater and you'll find music never thought of before! 🤘

Great reaction guys, love it when reactors have such an open mind to prog metal and can appreciate the musicianship. You should really react to them live. I recommend The Shattered Fortress live since it follows the same theme as this song or Illumination Theory if you're in for something longer and epic.

Technically considered Djent and not prog rock, but I highly, HIGHLY recommended CAFO by Animals As Leaders. It's a big hit within the technical metal/rock scene.

Cafo is a bad choice for a first listen, Tooth and Claw, Woven Web, Tempting Time and Wave of babies would be better choices.
I remember I got this album when it came out (from the library of all places) and was completely blown away. It’s a 2 disc album, the 2nd being my favorite. I agree with our fellow posters though, definitely try out Opeth. I’d recommend Bleak or Deliverance, though their music can be wildly different so it’s hard to point to a definitive song for them. If you guys are feeling adventurous, though, Black Rose Immortal is the longest, most badass song I’ve ever heard clocking in at around 20 minutes. Intricate, moving, just a beautiful track. Love yer content guys. You both bring an interesting perspective to a genre I hold most dear. Keep rocking tf out \m/
Should always watch these guys live. The fact they can do it at studio quality live usually leaves me as a musician with my mouth involuntarily sagging open.
Dream theater basically help my ADHD so much ,I love maths and I'll admit many of musicians go through a stage of wanting to quit when you realise we can't get to this level ,best concerts Ive ever seen dream theater ! I was turned on ,plus on speed so omg I remember it better haha ,love your vids!

So funny! 🤣 Yeah, as I'm sure you've already heard, there are 5 members, and all are virtuoso musicians. They really do some speed metal, don't they? They're the masters. Glad to see you guys really got into Dream Theater. For a good live segment, check out "The Dark Eternal Night" on their "Live at Luna Park" DVD. Lots of other cool stuff on that DVD, I've seen them live twice, and was speechless both times, as you might imagine. I think they are all just freaks of nature, and perform over and above what "normal" musicians do.
They play that and then some, live. It’s an incredible experience.

Progressive music tends to use lots of tempo changes but even more so as you've noted with Tool. There's lots of time signature changes. In fact DT has an instrumental piece called "the dance of eternity" that is only 6 minutes long but has 100 time signature changes

The Count of Tuscany is epic. It may be my favorite song of theirs, ever. You should do that one next

He's a total beast on the guitar. but all of them in the band was superb musicians. arguably the best in each of their instruments. if you want to see their prowess live, I recommend reacting to "Instrumedley live by dream theater". it is an instrumental with sections of their songs. you'll see why they are the real deal
I've seen them live so many times I've lost count. At one gig at the Civic in Wolverhampton, England, they played for 3 hours with a 15 minute break in the middle. Then, they came in for an encore and played two more songs. One was 18 minutes long and the other was 23 minutes long. Nearly four hours playing this sophisticated stuff. That's what makes them the greatest band on the planet.

This is just scratching the surface of the progressive metal world. There are so many amazing bands and musicians that are on their same level with amazing music.
