Well where do I begin, I picked up these STI KYB inverted shocks for a great price seeing as they were very scabby and more importantly were knocking and that drove the price way down but knowing about these shocks I knew there was a good chance they could be saved with a strip down and rebuild , If not the I'd just blown £250 on nothing but scrap metal.
So the first thing to do to rebuild these WRX STi shocks was to remove the springs, always a job I hate no matter how many times I do it as springs have a nasty tendency of wanting to hurt you you can just see them sitting there under tension seething with pure unfiltered rage so anyway they were fully compressed and the top nut was buzzed of and the strut tops removed them the springs were quickly uncompressed and made safe.
I then moved on to cleaning up and soaking the bottom nut to help make removal easier as you only get one shot to remove these nuts and if they spin the shaft then you are in a whole world of pain and swearing, Using an impact gun is your best bet as the speed and impact force shock it loose before it spins 90% of the time and I'm happy to say I got lucky with these ones. Once the nuts off its simply a case of pulling the cartridge out of the body.
Upon removal and inspection I could instantly see I got super lucky with these struts as there was no wear on the chrome of the cartridge, the bushings in the strut body wear totally unmarked and the cartridges themselves weren't leaking either so clearly these shocks haven't done many miles at all so that's a bonus for me as all I need to to is paint them and grease them up and that's it job done.
So onto the restoration, first as usual a thorough clean in the parts washer to remove all the grease and grime, then it was into the booth with the ventilation on full for the super ultra lethal paint stripper to do its work on the shocks, I usually do it this way to make my blast media last way longer as it doesn't need to work as hard and I don't need to clean it out so often as there's no paint flakes left on the shocks to clog the feed pipe.
Once stripped and blasted back to bare steel the shock body's were given a coat of epoxy primer for superior adhesion and rust proofing, after letting it dry it was overcoated with 2k KYB red. I was tempted the change the colour but decided against it as it probably is cooler to leave them looking like KYB intended. While the paint was drying the plastic and rubber parts were left to soak in a bath of A.P.C all purpose cleaner while I nipped out to swap my old black STI springs for a funky set of pink ones that are uprated and supposedly will make the car sit 15mm lower which is always a nice thing.. well unless you are going rallying lol. I also picked up my pair of group N front strut top mounts when i was out. Group N parts are all just made of a firmer rubber tightening everything up and providing a little more feedback to the driver.
After all that it was time to get the struts put back together and this was simply a case of working in reverse so i wont bore you with a full description of that too haha .
So i hope you enjoyed the WRX STi Inverted Shock Rebuild - Full Restoration and will join me again soon for the next installment of the series , I wonder if one day my channel will see the awesome growth that Mat Armstrong is seeing at the moment?
Enjoy

My biggest regret was selling my WRX STI, fabulous car. It could pass anything except a petrol station.
Same for me, but with my rx-8. Unfortunatly i got in a situation where i could not afford to have it at all anymore; i would buy one if i see one now as soon as i find a affordable garage box. Bought it with a blown motor because of oil starvation with not even 15k km on it. So i build a new engine from individually bought new parts; it was truely mine. Miss it so much.
Same here, Absolutely love both of mine. The Blob will be going for sale to fund another project at some point but I will never part with my white GC8.
What do you mean pass anything?
Or an evo 😂
@@mark675 the SUV? 😂
I would love another Subaru restoration from you! Giving me the motivation to tackle the rust and worn bushing on my bugeye
Nice one, Glad to hear I'm providing a bit of motivation for you. I've got more to come from the Subaru so stay tuned ;)
Very nice, RRC/ Sweet job and a nice little filler until the bigger job comes along.
Thanks very much, Glad you enjoyed it :)
gorgeous on how to restore a true gc8! My huband has a 96 2 door brighton coupe he is restoring to turn into a fun machine. Major love to someone taking the time to do it right!
I miss the STi series! Thanks for bringing back updates!
Plenty more coming very soon ;)
Great news, I loved your gc8 videos too
Another great video. Quality content and editing. Keep the installments coming.
Thank you so much :)
RRC + Subaru = 100% watch rate. I'm guessing I'm not the only one who is in this position, and I struggle with the idea of analytics data determining what kind of projects someone works on, but I think it's the difference between not having the time for casual YT watching, and making the time for something you're interested in and will likely learn something useful from.
Also likely to do with the fact most Subaru owners are currently working on their cars and they're all rusted to hell and back. >.>
This is the type of content I love the most from you channel! Amazing!
Lovely job.
I love seeing classic sti anything restored! Congrats on the pink springs and Inverted monotube shocks! I wish I had these on my wrx.
Amazing vehicle!!!
Congrats from Mexico! ✨ 🇲🇽

Literally the best hands on Renaissance man on youtube.
I love your videos mate! Great job!
Always a good day when a new RRC video comes up 👍🇦🇺
Enjoy :)
Amazing transformation! Top shelf, mate!
Thank you! Cheers! :)
There's no way that bottom bolt came out with just a splash of WD40!! There's was absolutely no swearing and a half hour search for a ten mil socket!! Top work as always, can't wait to see where they end up! ;-)
Haha love it! thanks for the comment :)
lol I guess the missing 10mm is a thing on both sides of the pond.
Thanks!! 🙏
Any Sti content goes hard 🔥
Great video !
Thank you 🙏
Thank you :)
Excellent work :)
Sir Mac. Love your show and your hard work. And the ditalie what ewer. From Sweden.

Hello my friend.. happy new year..... awesome job congratulations
Hey buddy, same to yourself and thanks for tuning in :)
YESS *IM EXITED TO SEE THE BLOB EYE!

Thank you! Cheers:)
Pink and red. What a fetching colour combination!
Yeah, its not the ideal colour combo lol
Congratulations on picking up my favorite facelift and color of car. I have a USDM WRB 2005 myself and love it to bits
Nice one, More to come soon ;)
Как всегда хорошая работа 👍👍👍🤔😉
Snaps fingers: .... hey it worked 😄
Massive amount of work, but a great episode !
Great results as always! I hadn't seen this design of strut before. Should be much stiffer than the normal right-side up shock design.
You did an Amazing work restoring your struts, while pink sti springs are definitely a really good upgrade, I would have upgraded the damper cartridge at this point (koni yellows) to better match the springs. Not the cheapest way to look at it tho'. Love your channel.
Missed you dude 😁. 😎
Roll on the next project
Nice rebuild
Cheers :)
Good stuff keeping scottish subarus alive!
Cheers, Its a full time job these days the Scottish climate just eats jap metal!
Nice restoration job, just what I want to see, and neither too long or too short
Thanks, glad you liked it :)
An another great save! 😉
Cheers buddy :)
I enjoyed the road trip
I'm planning on doing more of them seeing as people are quite liking that addition :)
An
Another great resto mate! 👍👍👍
Cheers buddy, glad you enjoyed it :)
@@RRCRestoration always! ☺
More car content please
Plenty more coming soon ;)
Well done. Your man starts talking with a Scottish accent. Subtitles say - foreign... Takes spring off, subtitles say music
..
Haha yeah, auto subtitles haven't done the best job with the accent this time, no worries though I'll get them sorted
Excellent video, more car videos please.
Plenty more to come ;)
Great content as always, please can you tell me what sort of paint stripper u use,or at least recomend a good powerfull one,as i cant seem to get a result like yours with the ones i try? Thanks👍
I love you videos man. I was wondering if you’d ever thought about making a tutorial how to do some at home restoration for painting body panels. Your so informative and it would be a honor to learn from u man. Thank you:)
Honey have you see. Our extra long butter knife?
No, never knew we had one 😝
Great job as always!!
i was just thinking to myself this morning... I haven't seen anything from RRC, should be due soon!!!
love the red color but not the pink color . nice work do .
Enjoyed this one! I like the b roll of the trip to get the springs etc, it’s a nice story telling touch. Only thing I didn’t like was the pink on red color scheme, black body on the struts would have made the pink pop
Thank you, I'm really glad you enjoyed it , I'm trying to make all my future video a bit more immersive into my world just like the trip out the get the springs etc etc im happy to hear its a welcome addition :)
Great video as allways, my man. Just cinamatic. Not my cup of tea those springs tbh, but the build looks top notch.
Gooooood
The red T4 is the star of this show! I'm biased though because I have a white one 😁
Nice
Thanks :)
Impresiv as allways
Thank you :)
Yay, more RRC content!
Enjoy :)
Oh yes top Video and Beautyfull Work and yes a Subaru new Project ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍
Thank you :)
Fantastic wee vid, love it. I need to do this to mine. In the mean time to temper the knocking, I do hand grease the shafts every time I service the car, so hopefully they're still in good shape. Amazingly it does shut them up for a good year or so! But the're up to 200,000KM now so I'm wondering if they are worth servicing, or is it's time for replacements... KYB AGX's sure do soung tempting, but expensive to get shipped to NZ.
If you wouldn't mind, can you share what grease you use? And if you think it's important for that certain spec of grease?
And thoughts on the grease nipple/zerg fitting mod?
And lastly, is there a paint code for 2k KYB Red?
Thank you for this detailed film. May I ask you, why did you replace the springs for shorter ones? I've read that old springs become shorter, what makes the car to sit lower. But here the old springs were longer. I've replaced the shocks and struts on 2 of our cars and almost done on the 3rd one. I've used the assemblies. I'm not sure if it makes sense to redo the old ones and have spares, and what parts can be used. Only 3 of 6 struts are leaking, all the springs are good, but as far as understand you can't reuse the old springs. I bought before those bottom struts for one of our car (2009 Nissan), thinking to put the original springs on it. But then I needed to replace the front struts quickly there since they were leaking, so bought the whole assemblies, put them on, thinking to transfer the original springs on those struts I've bought before and have spare. But now I'm in doubts if the springs can be reused at all. Thank you again. I would appreciate any opinions on this matter.
I get and the love your work in rebuilding the strut body and then repacking the grease. But what about the actual shock absorber. Surely they are cactus by now?
Also perfect drop in ride height I would go with a set of H&R’s or Eibachs.
I had the same thought. What about replacing the oil and checking the valving etc.
Love the channel. What is the colour code you used for the KYB red? I have a set of AGX on my 2.5rs that I trimmed the spring buckets on for the Ground Control spring kit I put on and would love to paint them all one colour again and the factory KYB red would be killer.
Had to look up what APC. Did you heat up the solution, does that make it more effective, and does it help in revitalizing the plastics and rubbers ?
Hey nice resto, was wondering what torque you did each nut up to? Thanks
@rrcrestoration great video, how did you remove the seals before painting the strut body? I’ve got some pink sti struts to refurb and I just don’t want to damage. Thanks
What boiling solution did you use to clean the rubbers?
Thanks. 😊
What paint stripper do you use?
Better be careful. I saw beard this episode 🤣
Haha oh I know im getting very sloppy with hiding my identity these days haha
Crazy how most car dampers are replacement throw away parts, I couldn't imagine it coming from mountain bikes!
What's your lethal paint stripper might I ask? I have some wheels to strip for my own restoration project!
You have much better paint stripper than what's available in the US.
👌👌❤❤
My snapping fingers never felt so powerful! 😎
Как всегда зачет по рестоврации!Вы поменяли машину?
video!! uhuuuuuu!
Mr RCC on the subject of your paint stripper, what is the brand you use please?
What grease do you used sir?? And where to get the new bushing?? Thanx sir
maaan, i looov so much your channel, i even paid once jajaja i would never do that on other channels XD
Thank you so much for your kindness, It means the world to me :)
Do you guys have a website ? Great refurb of those shock absorbers .
What is the torque spectrum you used for top and bottom? Thanks Billy
Would takeing the paint off with stripper also reduce costs as less time spent running air compressor both in electric and wear and tear on compressor. Have had workshops grumble about running costs on such things it's useful thing to have but they aren't cheap to buy or run if a decent size unit needed to run blasting cabinet, spray guns ect.
It does indeed especially if the paint you are removing is quite tough then you are looking at double the run time so yeah basically doubling your costs, and that another reason why I strip chemically first.
That RRC Restoration Super Ultra Lethal Paint Stripper sure does remind me of something... don't yet know what it is... 🍾 but I bet it sure has cost you dearly!
I never knew these were rebuildable. What grease did you use? I have a set off my Forester STI in the Garage that need a rebuild.
Whoa!!!
Good afternoon can I ask something, how do you set up your vapor blasting. How many horse power is your air compressor thanks.
Great video . Where are you based ? Ive got some subaru p1 shocks and springs that need refurbishing . Cheers 😊
1 2 3 snap. Brilliant as usual. Red T4?
Thanks James glad you enjoyed it :) , It is indeed i see you know your vans ;)
great, the only thing, I would mask the paint where it clamps and where bolts are sitting
Top job pal
Fabulous watch - keep the Scooby content coming 💪🏽😎
Thanks! Will do :)
Did you have the dampers themselves rebuild ? Anyway, it is nice job !
