Subaru STI S209 | Justifying a 70k Price Tag

- We review the most powerful and expensive Subaru ever, STI S209. Many will question the price tag when other sports cars outperform this car in most categories. The Civic Type R is almost 40% less and a Miata and Mustang are half the price. We skip right to the story and technical details to discuss the good and the bad.

You're wondering why major auto manufacturers can't build a car like this. I'm wondering why major auto journalism companies can't produce content as good as your reviews.
Talk about kicking Journalism in the pants and thank you for doing so.
Lawrence Makow Well said.
He's wrong
All those manufactures can make a car like this but they won't cause it won't sell as many
Majority of ppl now want auto transmission, they want those safety features as they want fast cars but refuse to educate themselves how to handle
It's all about supply and demand my friend
@@jmtm82 Yup you are correct and thank you.
Damn right!
the cinematography is out of this world Mr. Goose. your reviews are spectacular, thanks for doing what you do.

If Doug demuro reviewed this car, he would just do some high way pulls then would make fun of it for not having radar cruise control and give it 4/10.
Doug would probably go, "Look at these funky plastigy pedals, it's a 6 speed manual. What are these? I feel like I want to shift with it all the time! And that's the quirky part of the Subaru S209."
Such a bad take on Doug, he’s quality.
Pretty sure he reviewed an older model year of this car
@@ryanfoster6514 You mean quantity.
That ej playform is getting old man
This is so much better than any other S209 review. I thought it was just a tuned STI but now I know what makes this special. Well done!
There's also the look you get when you tell your significant other "I picked up an STI"

“Dude I got a STI today!”
@@DumbledoreMcCracken I'm not gonna lie I stole this from Car Throttle
This IS such a special car. I applaud Subaru and STI for making it and bringing it to the US market. Their passion is not lost on me. The ONLY thing that upsets me is that right now I am not in a position to buy this car but I am so happy for those who are. I hope the exclusivity of the limited production of this car means those owners will own and appreciate this car with all the respect it deserves. Again, well done and thanks for the in-depth break down on this car.
S209 sounds like a name for a German U-boat.

This is my first savagegeese video, never, EVER watched one. I loved it, you've earned yourself a sub guys, can't wait to watch more stuff with you!
Same, ended up here somehow
Absolutely phenomenal. This was a fantastic review. Unbiased, highly critical, looking between the lines. This is why I watch this channel avidly. Keep it up guys.
Hey b0ss
I should never have watched this. I sat in a dealership in San Antonio trying to make numbers work on this car. Didn’t happen. I knew I was going to miss out on something amazing. Now I know I really blew it! Great review.
I would think that you could add many of the upgrades to a standard STI and come in ahead for the most part.
There's always the 22B.
Forget your FOMO. You just saved 70k and I think that's awesome!
Think of what other great cars you could had gotten for 70k new or used that is better than this car. A GTR is better than this car all around and for a lightly used one, 70k hits the mark pretty well lol
Dude just because he's buying into the overhyped manufacturer bs doesn't mean this car is even close to worth that price... You did yourself a favor by not spending all that
Subaru doing something like this gives me so much more respect for the brand as a whole.
Agreed. But then they release the next gen WRX and make it look like a Crosstrek and make the top performance trim available only with a CVT. 1 step forward, two steps back.
@@rootsmanuva82hey, at least the new WRX’s have the same tires as the S209 😂
I feel like the car in this video and the creator(s) of the video have some things in common. Attention to detail where it counts, spending the time to get all the necessary data, and a dying breed. As a car enthusiast from the mechanical level to the driving feel, I appreciate the work you put into videos like this.
I love it when manufacturers do this.
i love it when u do that
lol subaru engineers are the 3rd rate bum team, the guys that couldnt get jobs at toyota or honda or nissan or mazda. subaru sucks at track racing. this thing is junk engineering with junk parts: steel rear arms, 340hp 30year old turbo 4popper with 15mpg. 60/40 weight balance. this thing is for the fruity fanboi dog owners

These cars are so much more than numbers and much greater than the sum of their parts. I was lucky enough to drive an s205 and it's one the best cars I've driven.
Great review. I love my S209. I also own a 2017 STI Limited. Driving them side by side you can feel the difference in engineering. The 209 was worth every penny to me.

One of the most detailed videos I've seen. The S209 is amazing. It is not just parts stuck on to it, that's not the Japanese Way.
Chinese way that is
Yes, I am absolutely a Subie fan, but the quality of this video was so good! The way that you explain the build process and how the price was assigned was so intricate. Thank you for yet another informative and entertaining review.
I really love how in depth you've gone. Makes it easy for someone who doesn't know much of what you're talking about to be drawn in.
I’m amazed by the depth of the analysis of the S209. Great job, Mark and Jack! I love your channel.
I stumbled onto your channel about a year ago and I have to give you mad props. Your cinematography is great but its your KNOWLEDGE that has made me a fan. You've taught me so much I feel like I owe you tuition! :-)
I am a Subaru fan and have lusted after these "S" cars. This is a dream come true that Subaru has done this for us here in the USA. This was such a dream that when I logged into CZcams and saw this video I stopped everything to see what you all had to say about it. Thank you gentleman for making this video. (:
Sort of like back in 2000 when Subaru brought the WRX to North America for the first time...
So, you're buying one?

Being a subi owner... it’s not wroth it lmao
I never understand what you guys are talking about when you go into the specifics of the suspension and tuning but I like it because it makes me feel smart when I adjust the suspension in video games.
Got this video in my suggestions, I really appreciate your production quality
This was the best s209 review yet. You covered so many details, and this really helped put into perspective what you get, vs taking a vanilla STI and dumping cash into it. It's really something special.
Incredible review, makes me sad that 95% of manufacturers don't make cars that FEEL connected anymore, just fast and insulated.
100% accurate: there is a relationship between fatherless homes and consumer choices, along with societal outcomes, but we’ve decided it’s nolonger allowable to discuss root causes of issues.
@sasquatchBased
Because people don't appreciate it
Because that what most consumers want, they want fast and insulated cars. Raw and pure cars are always niche market. If subaru replace all standard sti and only sell s209 spec sti with 65k price tag, I'm sure subaru will not making next gen sti.
The quality of the channel amazes me everytime, well done..
I love seeing your reviews. Love the grown up dry midwest humor. love the quirky awkward laughs from your co host. i especially love your passion for the car can be felt in the video.

Man that thing turned and stayed flat like it was on rails! Was genuinely pleasing to see those POV shots taking those corners to really convey the sense of speed and how well the car truly could turn-in! Fantastic review as always, and was great to see that a small manufacturer taking a risk to make a special engineered car like this actually showed great results and actually made you guys happy haha
Great technical deep dive. Gave me a real appreciation for the car and almost justifies the price.

S210 with an FA24 sounds like an interesting proposition...
Somehow, this is the best sounding EJ motor I've ever heard. I'm glad STI had the guts to get this out the door, and I'm glad Mark and Jack have big smiles on their faces after driving it.
These are FA-25's, if I'm not mistaken.

Ps. One of my goals is to have a Subaru STI
The STi has always had a great hydraulic steering rack
As much as i love my VA STi, my one problem is my steering rack. It leaked at 60,000 ish miles
I had to replace my p steering pump (leaked and sounded awful). 150k now...
@@davidescoe944 mine leaked after 15k. lmao. easy fix though and cost me $120 only. never had problems with it again.

Beautiful visuals in this video man
“Before you throw up in your mouth like I nearly did”, some quality laughs.
u can get a twin turbo v8 merc for $70k.
but upkeep for a subaru prob a lot better
70k lmao, sooooo many other options to list from that are much better performance wise and reliability. However, that’s not the point of this car. This is a hardcore limited enthusiast for those loyal to the brand.
Yeah, it's probably considered by many of the 209 buyers as a an investment. It's likely to hold value very well.
Exactly, if someone's really into their STIs and got the money, it's a no-brainer for them as it's the ultimate version of their favourite thing. Same with the BMW M4 GTS, Evo X FQ-440, etc. The price tag is just relative. And I am glad such things exist, better than another new CVT Subaru crossover.
Little boys will love it.
You could be in a gt350r for this price it is a joke
Here is the problem, this car will be obsolete when Subaru comes up with a newer regular sti version with more hp/torque and better fuel economy in the near future. The competition is pretty tough and that’s the only way to keep it up. I don’t even see this car holding its value due to that.
How the fuck do you ONLY have 371k subscribers? You have, BY FAR, the highest quality automotive content. You are one of very very few reviewers who actually flesh out vehicles. Thanks for everything you do!
What a vehicle!! Excellent video. Savage.
Great review thank you. Couple of comments:
The apparent loss of power, I think is due to ‘heat soak’ which is a feature of top-mounted intercoolers. The intake temperature is monitored and the timing is adjusted accordingly to prevent det. My 2002 STi (which I sold many years ago) was prone to this. Obviously the solution is to change to a front mounted IC but not many will want to meddle with a 70k special edition.
The FA engine (specifically the FA24) will almost certainly power the next generation STi and this should be worth waiting for.
That's why the water spray paddles are on the steering column.
@@OMGWTFLOLSMH
Yes, my STi had IC water spray as well. I think that its a gimmick, what Doug de Muro would call a 'cool feature'.
I appreciate that Subaru attempts things like this, which are simply "lets try something amazing". Even if the car isn't for me, that attitude is.
It's quite common clichée amazing, though. Truly amazing would be to try and not make the world suck in a way that tries to kill these passions.
While I can appreciate these endeavors on some level, there are other endeavors whose amazingness blows these kids' toyings out of the water.
I do not enjoy watching fireworks celebrating a losing game.

Usually I feel a slight twinge of jealousy when I’m sitting in my trash Focus and a sweet blue boxer rumbles past me, but 70 large? Cmon son.
Bimini Bob which Focus trim? As a former 2019 STI owner, I test drove a lot of the competitors, and honestly enjoyed the ST more than the RS. The RS is an awesome car in its own right, but it was hard to justify what they wanted for it and it would beat you to death. I’d have gone with the ST but that particular one was as base as base could get, and unfortunately the Focus had already been discontinued when I was shopping. Ultimately, the STI won out as far as overall package; fun, functional, and resale value (which unfortunately, and I guess fortunately, already experienced)
They only mace 200. You’re never gonna own or drive one of these.
Most people don’t even know it exist. It’s for a very small, passionate demographic. A lot of people can part with 70k without blinking.
70k MSRP and a 20k mark up here at my local dealer in Los Angeles. smh. add in taxes, DMV fees and financing... that's pretty much 6 figures for a STI 😂😂😂
Masster Wushu a little of people can part with 70k without blinking? What kind of fantasy world do you live in
Dogsport1 I don’t have a RS or ST. I said Trash Focus and I meant it. I’m a fan of both of those Focus variants btw.
I love how a lot of the people commenting on this video about it being overpriced or complaining about power or interior sound like they stopped before the driving portion of the video. You know, the part where they said it's one of the best cars they've driven in the last 15 years and it's worth the money. You buy this because NOTHING feels like it today because it's built with passion and not brains. If you haven't been in an older performance car where you can feel every little thing through the steering and the chassis is speaking to you, then you will NEVER understand why this car is worth the money in today's world of dead feeling cars.
Very informative content. Thanks for doing the research for us!
The subtle Fidget Spinner Vape on the infotainment screen is the cherry on the cake... that alone earned you an extra sub hahahahah
For the price, I do find myself catering more towards the gt350 or even the r. With that said, I found a newer appreciation and understanding for this car after watching this video. There are certain things that this car can do that the 350 can’t like behave well on the road and be more daily friendly. Yes, you can always tune the crap out of the engine of a normal sti and get more performance than the s209 for a significantly lower price, but that can be said for most manufacturers. But that’s not the point of this car, the point was to push the engine as far as they can and still make it work cohesively with the rest of the car’s chassis and suspension as well as be able to offer a warranty on it.
For the people who get it, they'll happily pay this. And that's OK.
any price is reasonable as long as you have someone to pay for it!
They only needed 209. Those were realistic expected sales just from people who were already Subaru fans, people who probably already owned an STI of some sort.
This is a car for driving enthusiasts not so much the "car enthusiast"
It's the Subaru version of Alpina or Dinan or whatever
I gotta say I'm not one of those people who "gets it". Then again, I'm not much of a Subaru fan. To each their own!
Learned so much more about the S209. I want one now! 😊

STI division heavy breathing with the s210 FA24
When you say "heavy breathing", I am wondering whether you're talking about N/A or long stroke or something.
@@Dowlphin no I meant the sti engineers are heavy breathing, in excitement to show what a beefed up fa24 can do. The current normie version of the fa24 block is good for 500hp

Again a top quality content right here. Its not even fair comparison to others.
Great video. I can't imagine how well it drives, I owned a WRX and test drove a 2020 STI and was shocked at how much better it handled. The steering, brakes, and transmission were spot on. Everything was awesome except the engine. But everything else is so good that it is still a great car.
First of all, wrx and sti variants carry the same suspension and brakes. The only difference is the tranny and more power. Second of all it drives the same, it’s just faster. Third and lastly, the wrx actually has more aftermarket parts and upgrades than the sti variant, for most of the time. Yes it’s still a good car, but the engine is the main selling point of it because no other car company has produced this many flat-4 sells ever. If you know Subaru you know they’re known for the flat-4, wrc, and symmetrical awd. (It’s actually 60-40 but oh well)
@@jonathonmiller2309 That is incorrect, and I’m not sure what your point is. The STI has a hydraulic steering rack, versus an electrically assisted rack in the WRX. The STI has 6 piston brakes, while the WRX does not. The STI has a more advanced AWD system with limited slip differentials, versus open differentials on the WRX. The transmission in the STI has a mechanical linkage, which has a better shift feel versus a cable linkage in the WRX. I was just saying that I personally noticed all those things that added up to a more enjoyable driving experience in the STI versus the WRX I owned at the time. I just felt that they were similar in straight line performance, and that the engine was in need of updating.
@@ytrabbithole6893 alright well thanks for teaching me something. Looking up more information and my legacy has most of those wrx parts besides the 6-piston brakes, I’ve got a cvt and due to that I need limited slip diffs. Other than that I’ve got a base wrx 2.5n/a
Miss my 04 STi almost every day.
Why don’t you have one? Wtf? I plan to get one
@@TheAssassinscreed91 Probably traded it in on something else like I did with my 2004 STi. Also be careful, the transmission tends to have issues (hard to make quick shifts) if you're trying to make fast shifts like in a race situation (especially trying to shift into 5th gear around 95 mph) under full acceleration. There's some flaw in the 2004s transmission, because so many guys were having the same issue back in the day. It really pissed me off. It only did it under wide open throttle acceleration.Normal driving it was fine. But at the track, it did it all the time (refused an upshift at high rpms - below redline)
Miss my wagon everyday
BLACK05GO1 I know exactly what you’re talking about. I swapped a 2004 STi transmission into my 2004 WRX and getting into 5th was always an issue due to it and 6th both being overdrive gears. They fixed it in 2007 but yep most races were lost after about 98mph lol
why?

Great review... but TBH, if i ever would spend $70k on a new sports car (never) it would be on a 2019 C7 Corvette or maybe a loaded up 2021 Supra !
Facts, coming form a 2015 STI, 2015 EVO owner
Just drove a Launch Edition Supra the other day and it feels tiny comparing to my STI, I know they are upgrading the new Supra but it needs a drop top if your 6 feet tall. Beautiful car though
Both of those cars are sports cars that are not practical as this Subaru. Adding to that in inclement weather, you will have the AWD advantage with this one.
@Bear Foxtrot "and the rod knock after 70,000 miles"
My forester did not have rod knock after 230K miles. And there is no S209's that have 70K on the road yet.
I don;t know about the rod knock after 70K miles but without putting any miles on the road it attracts haters such as yourself. That alone tells me that this is an awesome car.
The 2010+ subarus are one of the most reliable cars in existence
I think the EJ motor is certainly outdated, but it's not a bad motor. Keep it maintained, pop on an intake, exhaust, tune it, and don't touch the internals and it'll make an easy low 300s for hp and torque. However, it is still disappointing that a new, $70k driver oriented car has virtually the same engine and power levels as my 2008 Legacy (after some mods, of course).
If you have to mod an engine that much out the box, it’s a bad engine.
Intensive Purposes surely some of that is due to environmental regulations?
Boxer roughness at startup and idle just turns me off. The only way to mask it is to add an exhaust, but not everyone wants a loud car.
@@intensivepurposes4592 it's an engine designed to suit everything from foresters to STI's. Very few engines can be used across that range of applications
