Subaru WRX GC8 Super Rusty Rear End Restoration - Part 2

- So here we go with the job ive been DREADING! tackling the rust removal on all of the rear end components.
First thing i done before tackling any nuts and bolts was to give them a liberal soaking with WD-40 to try and make life a little easier and im glad to say it worked a treat.
As you can see from the video tearing down the subframe is a piece of cake, hubs off , remove the diff, flip it over and remove the lateral arms bish bash bosh done!
Now that everything is in component form it was time to remove all the worn bushes and that is the main reason i took the complete rear end out was to get all all the bushes, they are easily removed with the use of a press and after nearly 30 bushes were pressed out i was ready for the next stage.
Most of the parts were too big for my blasting cabinet so i decided to go a slightly expensive but very effective route, first i removed all of the heavy rust with the help of my needle scaler then i built an mdf box big enough to hold all the parts and then filled it with boiling water and DEOX C and left it for a day to eat its way through all the rust and when i came back to it as you can see by the video all the parts were beautify clean and ready for a coat of primer to stop them flash rusting while i was doing the repairs.
There weren't too many repair to be done, a few new brackets needed fabricating and a couple of support plates on the underside of the subframe needed plating and welding but apart from that all the parts are in good condition and still very strong.
I then etch primed the repairs and gave all the coats a good few coats of high build primer and a high solid 2k gloss black to protect the parts from rusting again for years to come. Now as i said in the video im not concerned about the rust pitting on the parts as they wont be seen and this isn't a restoration project i am simply getting the car back up to a suitable standard to go back on the road and for it to last for many years to come so please don't bombard me with comments about the pitting i left.
While the paint was drying i made a start on zinc plating all the old fasteners that i could re-use, obviously any damaged bolts will not be re used but any in good condition will be perfect to use again when re plated and dont forget im a thrifty Scotsman so every penny saved and all that jazz ;) haha.
After the plating that was everything done for this episode so i present the final shots and bid you a farewell till next time :)
so anyway Enjoy and please leave a like and comment if you enjoyed this video :)
See you all again soon

A little History
The project in question is the engine bay in my 94 Subaru Impreza WRX. As i can be heard saying in the intro of this video i love impreza's and i wanted a rust free one as all the UK ones suffer from lots of rust issues so in 2004 i imported this car from Japan and it was totally rust free when it arrived all those years ago. It has a couple of blisters here and there now but thats to be expected when living in Scotland.
Anyway im getting off track, I was having lots of fun driving the car at full boost everywhere until 2014 when the thought popped into my head " lets go for more power" so i took the engine out and begun the process of having it all upgraded, better gaskets, race bearings, forged pistons, con rods etc etc then life got in the way and the engine was put to the side and the car was stored in a shed for the past 5 years.
The initial condition of the car looks horrifying but its only a thick layer of dust and crud on it and there is a good layer of carnuaba wax separating all the crud from the paint so a quick pressure wash and she'll be looking good again .

So how are you guys finding the narration in my videos? too much to little? Can you understand my accent OK or do i need to try harder to speak clearly? haha let me know down below it'd be much appreciated.
Your accent is fine. The narration is exactly where it needs to be. You explain the plan of attack, shut the hell up and do it, then come back when it's the next step. Literally the perfect balance.
I agree with deuce you talk just the right amount say what your doing and then you get right Into it. And you speak clearly no need to slow down
Can someone translate what the hell he just said? He's on crack or he's cracking on what the hell does that mean? LOL yeah I agree with the boys you're doing a great job I think maybe mention hit the like button and subscribe and turn all notifications on
Your accent is fine brother dont let anyone bug you about it, and your commentary are perfect wouldn't want it any other way
Perfectly balanced
As all things should be. And your accent is cool mayn.
So excited! I wouldn't even mind if this WRX project had 57+ episodes! I'd watch them all twice!
The episodes gotta be longer, this is amazing ASMR. More of all!
Me too. Love this guy and love Subarus!
These are the best types of car videos. Enjoy watching these.
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
Bet
Me, a Midwestern, salt belt mechanic: “Oh, the Long Bolt! This struggle is going to be hilarious!”
*sees the bolt come right out*
Me: “What the hell?!?! How?!? No air hammer? No oxyacetylene torch? No cut off wheel? Must be witchcraft!”
Haha tell me about it im amazed as yourself that they came out no problem!
NorthEast rust belt sufferer here. I completely gave up on my long bolt, mainly since I'm swapping knuckles but still when he gently tapped it out, I was in awe. There's still all that flaked rust to contend with - looking forward to seeing the outcome.
@@RRCRestoration A rarity for sure!
I immediately came to the comments to see if anyone else thought that was too easy.
haha, my sentiments exactly...
That episode had it all!!
Things made to look new, George, Bonus George, ATC update and the promise of a new project!!
Great work, thanks very much
Thank you , really glad you enjoyed it :)
Having never seen this channel. And watching the previous few minutes. I assumed he was up to the task up repairing that thing!
Those chemicals removing all the rust is just like magic!
What chemicals did you use to remove the rust..
@@kevinflannery4393 Deox C Powder
I couldnt believe the different.i spat my tea out when i seen the next day results.
You can use regular vinegar too. Get the strong stuff and don't breathe it in.
@@cccpkingu Vinegar won't leave the metal looking that pristine, I think in part because it "stains" the bare metal but will clean the rust off. The fact that the parts looked like they had just been manufactured is astounding.
Perfect video. Comfy narration, lots of small tricks to solve problems, lots of easy to grasp learning, and great results. This is the best "diy" asmr restoration channel on YT. Keep up the amazing work.
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
Last time I was this early Binky had no more brackets than factory.
Haha love it :)
One of culture, I see.
@@RRCRestoration
Yeah Nik would be proud of you the way you made that bracket for the subframe
Hi. I watched this episode with my 4 year old daughter, and she loved your vacuum cleaner 🤩 Thx. A Sweden
I really appreciate the quick rundown on the plating. ive watch you do it dozens of times and kinda know how it works but he quick refresher is very much appreciated.
No problem glad you enjoyed it :)
Damn I love this channel!
I would watch a 40min video and still would like to see more
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
@@RRCRestoration thank you for posting and replying 😊
Yes more of the subaru I could watch this all day! You work so incredibly effectively yet so precisely too I wouldn't have half the patience or craftiness you have
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
My favorite kind of repairs I do to vehicles is chassis. You have blown me out of the water on the extensive work you've done. Bravo!!
When I did my work on my legacy gt. I really would have loved to do a re spray of th rear sub frame. Everything else was just replaced with newer arms and poly bushings.
Just stumbled across this series. As a huge fan of the classic shape Impreza, I am absolutely loving these videos! Thank you for making them entertaining 👏🏻👍🏻
Welcome aboard really glad you are enjoying the videos, plenty more to come ;)
You are an excellent craftsmen. The work on the front was great and the rear was a fantastic display of good old English metal work.
that powder you used for rust removal is bananas! I was blown away by how much it got off. this was extremely satisfying.
Lately I find myself saying " End daeir you havitt" whenever I finnish something nicely. Like mowing the yard or giving the bike new oil ... . My neighbors already think I´m a weirdo . LoL
Haha nice to know im having an affect on people :)
@@RRCRestoration Absolutely. :-)
I do want to see you remove all 30 bushies!! All of your content is good content.
And more George.
I wish i filmed it now and uploaded the footage as a directors cut as an extra for you, oh well maybe next time ;)
Perfect video to relax after a long, long day on the front line! You should offer classes to those of us who aspire to get our old Subarus back on the road. Thank you again, Roll on the next Episode.
You know its a video worth watching and a channel worth subscribing to when even the cleaning up of mess is well edited and informative!
Once again I thought for a split second you were going to attempt to weld that manky old bracket back together. One day I will learn that that simply isn't the RRC way!
Nice to see you again, Haha glad you enjoyed my little joke ;)
the use of the pneumatic scaler was so satisfying!! Rust pieces falling off just points to so much progress
Another great episode as we have become to expect, roll on the next.
Thank you, working on the next as we speak ;)
That needle scaler and compressor got a hell of a workout there!!! Needle scaler saves a ton of time though. I got mine well over 25 years ago and it paid for itself the first time I used it. I admire your tenacity. Most folks would've just junked that subframe and replaced it with how bad it was.
Wow that was very therapeutic to watch, especially with it being one of my favourite Japanese cars. Look forward to the next episode
The bracket though a simple fixture, got some intense fabrication built to factory spec, I can only admire how you work with what you have and thinking outside the box...two words....WoWeY-ZoWeY!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏! The work is amazing!
Thank you very much for your kind comment and im really glad you are enjoying the project :)
I understand exactly ZIP of cars. Never even removed a headrest for vacuuming since I was afraid I couldn't get it back on!
Having said that, I must say, I've been watching your restorations with great fun and I do enjoy each new episode.
Im so glad you enjoy my videos and i hope i can pass enough of my knowledge onto you that you wont be afraid to take on some projects of your own one day :)
I’m always glued to your videos sometimes watch the same one over and over again. Thanks for the videos
Thank you so much really glad you are enjoying my videos' :)
I can't believe how well the DEOX-C rust remover worked. Absolutely amazed.
You Are a Master at work 🙏 Thank you for saving this beautiful subaru
Just about the only person on CZcams who knows how to get under the rust with a needle scaler and not polish it with a brass wire wheel .
Bravo my man .
Haha yup gotta love it when you see other videos of people just polishing the rust thinking that they are removing it then painting over it and wondering why the rust is back within a week.
Fantastic job! This is how my impreza wagon look on the bolts and some parts... Someday I will buy an sti and keep it rustfree forever👌
I am already drooling a little for the next projects. Keep the good work, man. Thanks
I watch a lot of car related videos and restoration types on youtube. I have to say this is really impressive, it stands out from other car restoring content because you don't have any crazy music playing or excessive talking or video editing. this is really nice. the video is really concise.
Glad you liked it, Thank you :)
And it's wonderful to see what you are doing! It's also good to see you reusing bits and parts that can be reused instead of scrapping them in the local bin. Having enough scots in me, I totally understand.
Thank you so much, its always very satisfying to restore stuff back to as near as factory spec as i can get, i feel that replacing all the stuff would be cheating and then its not a restoration its just a rebuild with new parts and not the same car anymore plus yeah im a thrifty Scotsman haha
The easiest rear lateral arm bolt removal in the history of arm bolt removals.!!I resorted to the grinder with mine and bought new ones
Wow, the transformation is remarkable and you dont need any specialist equipment too..always look forwards to your videos, full of knowledge and i have learnt so much,i need to apply this to my Impreza too..hopefully once the weather pics up..roll on the next vid.
Proper work. Fun to see all of these parts getting a new lease on life after working on my old rusty Forester
This is quickly growing into one of my favourite channels on CZcams, keep up the good work
Always a pleasure to watch a skilled craftsman with such patience!
Thank you very much :)
Great job on those rear end bits your attention to detail is brilliant and at least you know you can use the Car whenever and it’s functional without the worry of it getting damaged in anyway and not on show in a garage lock up somewhere being looked at occasionally. Spot on.
Exactly, if i had done a pristine restoration id be terrified to even take the cover off it let alone drive it, at least this way it looks good and can be driven too without any worry :)
Love watching these videos , such craftsmanship, knowledge and skill with a genuine modesty towards the work , brilliant , you sir are a true craftsman at work
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
First time I have seen your channel, first video ....
I am astounded at the level of skill, detail, and knowledge.
Subscribed without a moments thought.
Thank you so much for your kind comment and for subscribing it means a lot to me :)
I love diversity of views. What one person feels "As good as new" and my good as new are very far apart. Great video.
Absolutely loving this.Your accent is spot on.
Stunning quality work, and attention to detail, as ever.
Thank you so much 😀
Wow! Splendid work, mate. 20 minutes flew by like they were 2. I'm really looking forward to the next episode where you reassemble this lot.
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it! :)
love the fact that you call them bushys
yup here in the UK they are called "bushes" instead of "bushings"
What a great job, it’s always a pleasure to see the progress!
Thank you! Cheers!
fantastic way to end the week. Once again another brilliant episode can't wait to see her out on the track thanks mate
Thank you very much, really glad you enjoyed it :)
13:16 vert buce tiik (the blue one), very useful !
Thanks for the videos, your work is amazing.
Cheers from France.
its just amazing to see what you can do. Great Job
Quick tip for anyone doing this sort of work themselves, from a Toyota restoration specialist across the water in Northern Ireland. Deox-C is amazing stuff, I would be lost without it. But I don't pay a premium for the logo on the bottle for large batches like this where you need a large quantity of it. Deox-C is little more than re-branded citric acid. I buy it in 25kg packs from online retailers at 1/4 the cost of what BH sell it for, and it's available in smaller quantities like 5kg as well. I'm not knocking BH at all, their products are all excellent. But restoring classic Japanese sports cars is expensive enough as it is, and saving a few pounds here and there can make all the difference.
Ive always been meaning to try citric acid instead of deox how does it compare?
This was so helpful. I’m excited for the rest
nice to see you applying some good old fasioned metalworking skills............something that is seriously lacking in this day and age
I can't believe how good those parts looked after the deox c treatment. My jaw dropped! It's amazing with some chemistry you can turn rusty junk into something usable again. I'm a bit jealous you didn't have to fight on those bolts, we get hammered with salt on the east coast of the states and its a bear to remove parts. Haha love George's work and the editing
I love wrxs and I love watching great restoration videos. This series is epic.
Glad you enjoy it! thank you :)
Wow that rust removal worked way better than I thought! Crazy stuff!
I wouldn't be without it now :)
Unbelievable transformation ❤
Master craftsman yet again ! Great work and thanks for the hard work ! Great entertainment
I’m always psyched to see a new video from you, your work is so in depth and interesting to watch, I’d love to tackle a project like this myself someday
Awesome, thank you! :)
Hello RRC !! I've never seen that rust removal tool. Thank you very much for having explained how to make the zinc plating !!!
No problem 👍
The release of this video is the best thing to finish work and see!
I hope you enjoyed it? :)
Hard to believe how hard your environment is on suspension components but seeing is believing....no doubt they will be better than "factory-new" when you're finished. Great work!
Thank you, Yeah the Scottish climate really does take its toll on cars :(
Really fascinating process. Can't wait to see the rest of the car!
Thank you, Next episode coming very soon ;)
I am watching your videos fondly and I am waiting for the continuation
Another great video very inspiring and exciting to see this come along. You make it look so easy and tempting to do as a diy project.
Thanks so much 😊
These restoration videos get me wanting to go to my garage and go work on my aw11!!!
Nice AW11's are cool, i had an SW20 many moons ago.
Always excited when the bell rings and see RRC if only but understandable how often the content comes....Quality cannot be rushed and therefore patience is a virtue 👍🏻👀🥸
Thank you for your kind comment really glad you are enjoying the project :)
That stuffs amazing at rust removal best I’ve seen hands down
As soon as the hoover popped his head up over the table, it was was an instant Subcribe 😆
I did the same job on a GC end of 2019 and wow what a load of work. My subframe and knuckles weren't salvageable though. So, I used a set along with some other rear end components and hardware I got in trade for a 30 rack of beer. Grinding and hammering the rust off the diff was a real pain as well. Yours was in much nicer shape than mine. The diff cover had corroded so badly it actually had a hole once the corrosion was removed. Even with the replacement knuckles I had to weld and build up the e-brake shoe backing points as they had some holes, then grind them flat again. I had to removed rust behind the backing plate, hammer it back down, and weld it so it wouldn't expand out again. The ABS sensors were an absolute terror to get out of the old knuckles, but they're so expensive so I tried to save them. Were I to do it all again on a restoration car I planned to keep forever, I'd likely rather buy a lot of new components instead. Especially given how much fits from the GD/GG cars. That said, my reasoning was similar to yours. Structurally sound bits and a car that would be driven hard and didn't need factory fresh. Plus it saves a ton of money. Agree with you on the hardware as well! People don't realize it would be quite a bit of money to replace all those nuts and bolts.
Hey, Thanks for your comment sounds like you had a rough time salvaging your GC, like yourself when i dropped all the parts out i was thinking yup this is gonna be expensive but after a more thorough inspection amazingly all the components were still 100% structurally sound despite their appearance haha and your spot on about the hardware its not long in adding upto mental money thats why i always reuse if i can.
@@RRCRestoration Definitely rough! Unfortunately the car itself is destined for scrap. Worst frame I have ever seen on a GC with very bad previous repairs as well. Rockers gone and crazy bad past quarter repairs as well. They didn't even bother to connect the wheel well to the outer metal. Put the new rear end in it just to have fun with it while it lasts, and I'll keep all the parts I restored when it goes. Bought the car for the turbo engine swap it had in it and a lot of upgrade parts! I just love Subaru. Thanks for replying and the awesome vid!
I comment every video but totally missed something - you and I are basically the same. I have an older Ducati, a Streetfighter. I have a Bugeye (Newage) WRX that I track as well. I used to do what you do in your videos until kids and marriage, lol. But at least I can sit at a computer and watch you lol. Great vid!
Haha Nice we obviously both have good taste in vehicles ;) Im not married yet so i better have my fun in the workshop while i still can. Glad you are enjoying the project.
Brilliant as usual, you never fail to deliver.
Thank you! Cheers! :)
Nice to see George back to work again
Excellent work! One of my favorite cars of all time so it's great to see it getting some love! Looking forward to more 👍
Thanks! 👍
Thoroughly enjoyable . I wonder how many actual man-hours of work this 20 minute video represents ...
Thank you, Ive lost track of the hours that went into it
Crackin' episode there, glad tae hear the atc is coming up soon. Regards.
I almost missed the vacuum wearing a respirator. You are a great father.
thank the CZcams algorithm for actually suggesting a channel that I would LOVE. Simply AMAZING. I smashed the LIKE button and SUBSCRIBED
Excellent video series. Kudos to you, sir.
Thank you kindly! :)
Best diy you tube restoration chnnl, period.
Kind words indeed :)
Awesome video, man! Excellent work and looking forward to the next one! Take it easy, dude!
Thanks! You too! :)
A lot of people would rather replace over restore. Personally I think a nut and bolt restoration is the best way too do any classic with some rare classics replacing things devalues the vehicle
That's mint mate . Proper job 👏
Always a joy to watch, 😍 cant wait for the dirt bike episode!
Thank you :)
Love your stuff mate. Not only for the quality of the content but also after i watch a new vid i get the urge to go and fix a part on my old Harley Sportster ive been putting off so you need to keep on pushing out more vids so i can get my bike finished :D
Another fascinating episode 👍🏻
Thank you :)
Six point sockets will be your friend. Looking forward to reassembly.
Love your videos ! The car I recently purchased has a lot of rust underneath and I plan on using some of your methods to get it all cleaned up and painted. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep up the good work !
Thank you very much, Good luck with your project :)
I think in Spain we don't have this kind of rust remover, is that acid or what is it?.
Thanks
Awesome restore amazing job as always.... congratulations my friend
Nice to see you again .Thank you so much 😀
Excellent series all round, plus the return of Henry!
It's George! I take great pride that his vacuum bears my name!
Transformation from the rust remover is crazy
Good work Buddy. Nice to see that you are keeping it "real" and the Scooby will be used and not wrapped in cotton wool.
Thank you, yeah meticulously restored cars are cool to look at and stuff if thats your thing but for my own cars i much prefer clean and functional "restoration" so that i can use it and not have to worry about scuffing up a pristine underside.
I always look forward to your videos. Thanx for your hard work.
Thank you, Glad you like them :)
Oh Wow I'm always amazed by your good work! Mr Hoover made me laugh!
Me encanta tus videos, eres un gran restaurador. Cada trabajo es cada vez mejor, un solo fallo.... tardas mucho en subir videos😁😆😆
Congratulations for this great job
Thank you so much 😀
Bilt Hamber told me they are currently in the works setting up US distribution. Can't wait for that day. International shipping is expensive. Such a great product line.
nice one
keep em coming your work is appreciated
Always nice to see you, Glad you enjoyed it and the next episode will be along soon cant wait to get it all bolted back together :)
You sir are a true artist! Fantastic stuff!!
Thank you so much 😀
