BC Schizophrenia Society is running their #BustAMythBC contest again this year, 2022!
To mark #MentalillnessMay, they called out to people with lived experience of psychosis, including schizophrenia, to create some content.
I participated in 2020, and now again nednednerB the Schizophrenic is here for #schizophreniafacts and to #smashstigma

"People with schizophrenia should be hidden from view.
What are the repercussions of openness regarding mental health experience?
People are reinforced to hide their struggles and pain because of stigma, fear, violent social reaction.
In historical fact, people with mental illness have been very violently oppressed by non-democratic societies.
For example, families and friends don't want to accept or talk
about a person they care about in terms of a mental health diagnosis.
I'm not afraid of the word schizophrenia. let's talk about it.
In 2022, more acceptance and more inclusion are still worthy goals.

My Brother has SZ and he was always afraid I would tell someone his condition because he knew the stigma. I have always told people he has a neurological disorder because as soon as they find out it's a mental illness, they treat the person like it's their fault and they can help being the way they are. Psych Nurses have told me the stigma is definitely still there in 2022. If they think it's physical they are so sympathetic and the moment you mention mental, they say, Oh ever so quietly. Like it is a crime.

my biological mom and younger brother have schizophrenia. i do care for them. but they can be violent...

Being a member of the general population by far statistically correlates with violence more than being a member of the group affected by psychosis. So while your mom and younger brother might seem violent to you, that's irrelevant to the statistical picture. And I also bet more often people don't understand them and there is a specific history regarding >their outbursts which is >expressly not a statistical normalcy. As I said, being "normal" leads to more assault and abuse than being "schizophrenic".
I hope your family gets the help and support they need.

I'm only violent when I'm in psychosis and off my meds. then I'm like a different person. I'm now on medication and better. when I look back I can't help feeling shame embarrassed and guilt. which other illness than mental health can make a person feel like this? schizophrenia can be like a change of personality a change of character in a drastic way. even spiritually I feel and think differently when I'm psychotic. it's like being two persons two identities. can you relate? in that way I find Mt schizophrenia troubling scary and also fascinating. it is so many mixed feelings that ot brings up for me. Good Times bad times everything wrapped in one.
