  • A list of the 50 highest scores in the history of Eurovision.
    This video was made in 2015, before the 2016 changes to the voting system where the amount of points was calculated in a different way. The ranking is purely based on the amount of points that an entry scored. Because the 12-point system has only been in use since 1975 and more countries have been introduced to the voting pool over the years, this list obviously leans towards the newer songs. Although not without a few surprises!
    If two acts have the same amount of points, they have been ranked according to their final score and then chronologically by earliest year, following the logic that due to the increase in the amount of voting countries, receiving 180 points would be easier in 2014 than it would have been in 2004.

    So you've openly admitted that this top 50 is biased towards recent years, particularly 2004 onwards when countries eliminated in the semi-finals as well as finalists voted in the final. The best way is to work out the maximum achievable score each year since 1975, calculate each country's score for that year as a percentage of the maximum possible score for that year and include the 50 songs with the highest percentages in your video collection.
    Take Sweden's Euphoria 2012. Sweden won with 372 points that year, but with a possible maximum of 12 points from each of the other 41 countries (including the 16 semi-finalists which failed to qualify), i.e. 492, Sweden won with 75.6% of the maximum possible score. The record for the winner with the highest percentage of the maximum possible score since 1975 still rests with United Kingdom - Brotherhood of Man "Save Your Kisses For Me"; 80.4% in 1976.

    • @brittanywatts6887
      @brittanywatts6887 Před 8 lety +14

      thinking about it Azerbaijan was a terrible winner when countries managed to get higher with half the amount of voting countries. 2011 had the most participants ever with 43 people. 221 for a win is really bad

    • @EurovisionDivision
      @EurovisionDivision  Před 8 lety +8

      +TumbleTower Of course, this is all very true. Similarly, a list could be made for the most amount of twelve points received, and one could be made for the highest percentage of 12 points received, but they would be listing different things. Various different metrics could be applied when creating a list like this; the choice made here was just to focus on the scores itself, not so much on what those scores are worth within their time period. Perhaps it's a subject for another countdown.

      +European Gold I have the feeling Azerbaijan government passed some serious bribes somewhere or bribed people to vote for them so they could host the competition in 2012. It's a bit odd they placed in the top 10 when they entered the contest, but when bribery scandals emerged, they started to perform badly, the last two years they didn't crack the top 10...

      There was an old rule that the one who had more 12 points would won, if they had the same quantity then they counted the 10 points. That's how Sweden won in 1991. But the actual rules say that if there's a tie, the country that was voted by more countries would won. :)

    I've put some research and work into finding out how the 2016 songs would have placed if the old voting system had been in use.
    These songs would have made it to this video:
    #4: Australia/Dami Im - Sound of Silence (314 points)
    #12 or #13: Ukraine/Jamala - 1944 (268 points) [Serbia 2007 got the same amount of points]
    #34: Russia/Sergey Lazarev - You Are The Only One (211 points)
    #49: Bulgaria/Poli Genova - If Love Was A Crime (180 points)
    Hence Denmark 2001, Belgium 1986, Latvia 2002 and Armenia 2014/Russia 2013 would be pushed out of this list in favor of these four entries

    As I was saying, you beat me to it, but we could make a sort of addendum to this. I have the data charts you used, and I could make a 100-52 list (since there is a tie for 50, I'll only count up to 52).
    This would include all songs that scored 145 points or greater, up to 173, in which after that all is covered by this video.
    (Weird fact: While some songs did score 145 points or 143 points, no song has ever scored 144 points.)
    Notable entrants include the winners of '75, '76, '78, '82, '84, '87, '90, '91, '92, '95, '96, and 99, PLUS the Top 3 for 2003, the Top 4 for 1998, #2-5 of 2010, #3-6 of 2005, and #4-7 of 2006 (edging out #6 of 2015 as the lowest-ranked song mentioned in the Top 100 list).
    Those who wouldn't make the list (and scored only 143) include the winner of 1980 (Johnny Logan's first song, "What's Another Year?"), #6 of 2010 ("Me and My Guitar"), and #5 of 2014 ("Running" by Andras Kallay Saunders).
    So I'd like to know if I (or we) can make this happen.
    (BTW is my math wrong?)

    • @EurovisionDivision
      @EurovisionDivision  Před 8 lety

      +JERealize There's always room for more! I figured 50 songs would already make for a big list so I stopped there. I had the list figured out from 160 points upwards (the Top 75), but I was too committed to avoiding ties in the ranking and the 4 songs scoring 170 points and the 4 songs scoring 164 points just made it a bit too tricky for my liking. It is interesting how some scores have never occurred at all.
      Either way, don't let me stop you from making a video! The Division does not have a monopoly on rankings, stats or joke videos!

    • @JERealize
      @JERealize Před 8 lety

      The thing I would have done is figured out how to break the ties first by determining how many countries had voted during that particular ESC. The ones who had less countries participating in voting would be ranked higher; in the case of 164-pointers from bottom to top would be 3/2003 (with 26 countries voting), 2/1993 (with 25 countries voting), 2/2002 (with 24 countries voting), and 1/1976 (with 18 countries voting).
      Afterward...yeah the 170-pointer rule does look more complicated to decipher. As it isn't said when the tie-breaker rule changed between 1991 (when Sweden beat France) and 2008 on any easily-accessible sites, we wouldn't know how to fix 2004's tie placement. HOWEVER, I took the work to scan through rules for each year's ESC (using what is archived in www.myledbury.co.uk), and here's what it said for 2002:
      "Should there be a tie for first place, the Grand Prix shall be awarded to the song that has obtained the highest score (12 points) the most often..." (This starts the tie-breaker with the count-back procedure.)
      This changes in 2003:
      "Should there be a tie for first place, the Grand Prix shall be awarded to the song that has obtained points for the highest number of countries. If the songs received votes from the same number of countries, then the highest number of 12-point scores shall qualify..." (This starts the tie-breaker with the "most countries" procedure before working on the count-back procedure.)
      Assuming that the tie-breaker rules haven't changed elsewhere between 1988 and today, then after assigning 4th to 2/2010 and 3rd to 5/2006 then Cyprus (with 32 countries backing it) would beat Sweden (with 30 countries backing it). Also, with the divide in place between 2002 and 2003, it's impossible for a tie to surpass the "overall countries who voted in the ESC those given years" rule so it would conflict with those two specific tiebreaker rules, since there have always been 25 or less countries voting pre-2003 and always 26 or more countries voting 2003 and beyond. Phew.
      I ought to post this rule change on Wikipedia. I already have the sources.

      I don't like how Sweden hasn't had a song with some personality since 1999. They always hop on the trend of the year and send a generic song with badly written lyrics and (except for Sanna Nielsen) a mediocre vocalist. I hoped they would up their game last year and send Jon, the Sami guy, but nope, they went for the David Guetta reject. I mean, they won and all thanks to the jury, but they seriously need to send songs with a bit of personality. Thanks for saying Italy which is my country I guess but I usually dislike our entries lol
