I was able to get the filter out by coming from the front with an extension and pulling the housing towards me. I figured this out after taking my battery out.

Yesterday, I changed the fluid (3.5 quarts after warm up) and the CVT filter (all new OEM parts), but after using the car for a day, I found fresh (clean, transparent like out of the bottle) wet HCF-2 wet droplets on the ground this morning (3 droplets). I touched all around the warmer housing unit with rubber gloves, but couldn't detect wet oil--just semi-dry. Drain plug area had a little wet residue (but I tightened to 35 ft-lb with a new 18mm crusher washer; hand tightened then torqued--done this before with no problems). Check bolt area is bone dry. CVT pan area above the splash shield is pretty wet, but I didn't wipe that down. I am thinking if anything is leaking, the CVT fluid color should be darker (not clean, transparent) since drained fluid was red-black. If 50% of the clean fluid mixes with dark fluid, I would think the mixed oil would be dark (could I be wrong?). Should I just keep observing for a day or two more or should I reseat the rubber O rings and and re-tighten the bolts around the warmer housing unit to 20 ft-lb? Do you think I can re-use the 1 day old rubber O-rings? Also, do you think 20 ft-lb may break the warmer housing 12mm bolts? Thank you!

I found it on the internet; it says 20 ft-lbs of torque, but I think it's too strong. I got scared and stopped before 20, and it's not leaking. Check bolt is also 12mm aluminum but is at 15ft-lb. Wouldn't hurt to try lower first. If it doesn't leak, leave it alone, if it does, oh boy. I tested 1/4 and 3/8 torque wrenches, and for 15-20 ft-lb, 1/4 is more accurate.
