That part of Echo speaking on vacations as resets for chronic brain lock and Jocko stating, “Why aren’t you coming up with noble prize winning ideas on the regular basis homie? You should have cured cancer by now.” That was epic 💥😂
For me pro sports play offs are my reset. It's a break in routine for a few weeks, and i always try to come out of it with new energy/a new direction. I find because playoff games are on a set schedule every year, it's easy to swap from the winter rut to the summer routine.
Jocko, I read Discipline Equals Freedom and did your 4:30 am routine for 4 months, and it started me off on a great path towards discipline. I’ve been bulking up and increased my strength in weights. Now I’m my cutting phase I’ve lost over 6 pounds and my body fat so far fell from 21% to 18.6% Update: As of this month, I’ve lost 30 lbs of fat, body fat is now 12.5% and I’m getting stronger
I would do that except I gotta be up at 3 for work and leave the house by 4:30 😂 That's enough morning discipline for me lol. Evening workouts and runs for me. But good job brother! Keep at it, stay on the grind! Stay hard!!!
Jocko literally just explains that this is the podcast and that he is sitting with echo charles, yet, he somehow manages to describe it as the most serious thing ever in a very dramatic way. If Jocko has a superpower, then this is it.
This is such a useful practice and it cannot be stressed enough. What I have learned to do is to Physically start doing something Before giving my mind a chance to complain which would otherwise lead to the 'software' freezing as you put it. If I have to do something I won't enjoy, I immediately take physical action to start it because I know that if I think about it I will freeze up and procrastinate - If you don't want to take out the trash, put your shoes on immediately, if you don't want to write a hard email, just start typing right away and don't let yourself stop. It works wonders and saves a lot of time you would otherwise spend trying to convince yourself to do something.
I have a similar understanding of this stuff. It's not so much getting yourself in the habit of doing a specific thing; rather, just doing A THING when you want or need to do it. It's also about breaking the habit of NOT doing the thing.
Haha I'm gonna need to do this at work. Work at a steel manufacturing plant, in the forging department. Driving a forktruck into a giant oven that's at 1,200 - 2,400°F is gonna be rough, but can't think too much about it I guess 😂 Just ignore the clothes burning and meshing with your skin! 👌

Echo' s humility is inspiring. You know he could just tie a person up like a pretzel. And jocko is pure viking. Great chemistry between these two. Great podcast.
Setting timers/keeping lists, etc. is very important for me to keep up with my daily and weekly goals. I'm still old school in that I keep a legal pad on my desk broken down with each day and what I need to do on those days, including gym time, chores, etc. and then cross the item off the list once I'm done. It sounds weird, but that sense of knowing what is there to do and being able to have the satisfaction of clearing an item off the list keeps me focused. I know it's probably easier to do it electronically, but there's something about physically interacting with it, writing it down, that seems to imprint it in my brain better so I don't forget things. I do the same for workouts/fitness goals, I have a spreadsheet tracking weigh ins, fat/muscle %, personal bests on lifts/pushups, etc. Just makes it a bit easier to get through life when I have those things in order and know what I have to do later in the day/week.
If you're feeling burnt out, stressed, or like you're constantly running on empty, it may be time for a reset. Some signs that you need to take a step back and recharge include feeling irritable, exhausted, and unmotivated, or experiencing difficulty sleeping and concentrating. I want to thank Jocko and Echo for helping me overcome my dentist fear. For 20 years I've taken meds to calm me before seeing the dentist. I would get uncontrollable shakes and go into panic attacks in the chair. Over time I was able to calm down with the regular tooth cleanings but I still needed meds for anything requiring the drill or shots. This last time I had decided that I think I could handle the visit without meds. Today, on the way to the dentist, I was beginning to feel a little nervous that I hadn't tried to get any meds. So I decided to say a quick prayer and listen to a few Jocko videos in the car as his videos always give me courage. I went into the dentist, had two small cavities filled, and I was completely calm. No issues at all. I feel like I overcame. Thank you.
I get disturbing nightmares every single night, for the last 20 years. All I see is dismembered body parts, planetary destruction, dark spirits, demons, the end of the world, and ceaseless fighting. Every night it's another vision of hell.
I’ve been battling chronic brain lock recently…jacked my sleep regimen all up doing non-sense stuff. Instead of forcing things (which I did attempt), I decided to embrace what the cosmos was giving me. Before, I was an early riser 4:00am-5:00am and go to sleep 9-10pm. I stayed up way too late (or early rather) and pulled a few all nighters to where I found myself unable to fall asleep until 3-4am. After no luck forcing the earlier bedtimes, I decided as an experiment to embrace the new sleep schedule since that is what’s being given. I sleep like a baby now that I wait until my body signals truly needing rest. Productivity feels just as in-line. Looking back, feels like there’s so much in our heads thinking we need to do this or that, to a point where we get consumed by it all and don’t know who we truly are anymore. Should be interesting here forward, but the liberation that comes with just surrendering to the universe is one of the best deals in life I think I’ve ever made. Just the acceptance of oneself and nature’s forces around, feels very…appropriate.
i haven't reset or used Ctrl+Alt+Del in Windows in years, but then again I've build my PC and understand the basics. As long as you have good parts and drivers things just work if you keep them clean, updated and don't mess with thing you aren't supposed to, including in the internet. Good practices when using, help a lot, but yes a lot of that can have a parallel in our own lives. Turning off (not a Ctrl+Alt+Del or reset) is a must for any computer from time to time. Even the constant running hours can limit the years you can use since everything, including us, have a limited lifecycle. So, yes, we also need to switch off, reset, etc. or we burn up early!
A reset on a PC refreshes your memory which matters less when you have 32gb or more but most people have 4-16GB. For a lot of people they will reset when updating drivers so they’ll feel like they never reset when they actually reset a lot.
i lost all my friends when i stopped attending school during covid and graduated without any of them. I lost my gf of 3 years about a month ago she cheated and left me. I finally got a job after a year of little to no full time work. Now im quitting substance use and going through extreme withdrawals. I 100% need a reset and a proper routine.
Best thing I've ever done for my weight training is start setting a 1-minute timer between sets. No more time wasting looking around the gym, or getting distracted on my phone. It helps me stay locked in. My love of timers is growing.
I've been through a long list of very terrible things which have left me disabled. The only way I function, the only way... is to time everything and go from one thing right into the next and so on. I don't just function, I shine. However, as soon as I stop and left to my own devices I'm self destructive caught up in my head. So yes, putting yourself on a clock is extremely productive.
That's actually a great analogy. The problem is of course being aware of when you're freezing up in the first place, otherwise how can you reset yourself? Computers are reliant on us resetting them when necessary, but in our case we usually don't have that external switch somebody can press for us. Operating System engineers include a number of precautions for the computer to reset or slow down and "unload" when it's getting overloaded with instructions, and the human equivalent of that could be practicing being mindful so that you're always aware of, and able to respond before your state of mind is about to hit a threshold and freeze up.
Just did this myself. The only caveat is you have to know yourself pretty well in order to pull off a hard reset. It's about knowing your Own psychology. What works for one person isn't going to work for another. If I told you what I did last night to reboot my brain, you wouldn't understand why that would work, and it probably wouldn't for you. I'm in recovery. For 3 years now I've noticed that whenever I would relapse, I would have a sort of mental/emotional reboot eventually and that would restart the process of recovery for me. Over time the lag between relapse & reboot shrunk. Eventually I was rebooting immediately after my relapses. RIGHT BACK on recovery road ! After seeing this process play out a bunch of times, I learned to leverage it myself before relapses. I now intentionally reboot my mind Every once in a while. When I feel like life isn't making any sense to me.
Do you remember F5? It would take you to a page behind a page behind a page to a black screen with a blinking box. The box could be blue or green depending on what your preference was and it just sat there blinking, blinking, blinking. That's where I Am Black, nomad's, space, blinking.
Setting a clock is one of the things that kernels actually do to pull up out of control processes. It's called a "watchdog timer". If you don't check in with that watchdog the kernel can say "you're fucked up" and tear down the process to stop it from affecting everything.
Big one for setting timers. Been doing it for years - especially on tasks i will likely procrastinate on and Im easily distracted. The timer gives me a focus point. It also stops getting over involved (unless its really neccisary) and can also turn things into a game. - how much can i fix in the house in 45 minutes - im only going to sit in the office for 90 minutes - how many quotes can i get through? . Ive 10 minutes to get as much firewood stacked as i can. etc etc.
I am at a stage where I need to slam that button. I have accomplished a fair amount so far in my life at the age of 49 but I'm stuck in a poor routine of going work, having a good sense of accomplishment at work, then coming home and doing nothing. My wife and I drink Friday and Saturday night and that's it. I was in the best shape of my life a few years ago and would like to get back to that. I really would also like to do something more than what I am doing but it is so hard. When you talk about your brain freezing at the thought of performing "action" I can identify with that. I am writing this on CZcams right now thinking this is another form of procrastination. I have always struggled with this and somehow did really well with my life but I have never been happy with my level of procrastination.
for the windows part. I have had my windows pc running for the last 7 years, the longest stretch it was on and running for was 2 years, only interrupted by me moving

Great analogies here and a lot of great mind inducing, thought processing done here with these two SEALS/gentlemen. Some big things to take in mind here
To further elaborate, it has to do somewhat with the system it’s built on and that system’s memory management. The main reason for program errors(there are plenty others) is either corrupt or overrun memory. The programs running are usually ineffective in handling their own trash and side effects. In this sense restarting is a good solution but we may want to also use a different program mentally. The ones we are using are either inefficient or the system isn’t to spec to handle it long term. I’d be more concerned with having a solid operating system with efficient programs than have to wait until it has to be restarted regularly. So make sure the programs aren’t creating issue with the system so to speak, then a restart will likely never be needed.
The first thing I do when I walk into work is something I do every single day without fail: I conduct a NBS-BFA - aka: a "no bull-shit battlefield-assesment." "Are we winning or losing? Do WE control the battle-space or does the enemy? Do we need to throw additional resources at this situation or do we have it handled? Should we order an engagement or do we need to fall-back and recover? Do we need artillery support, air-cover, medics? Are we winning? Can we win? What is the: NO-BULLSHIT situation on the ground?"
There's that old saying: the first step to not digging your grave is to: stop digging. When you're the U.S. Military and movies have taught you that you're going to win every engagement you every fall into... it's important to have someone in a position of command and communication that can recognize - we're getting our ass kicked and we need help.
If you ever find yourself in command of other people - you shouldn't retract, but you also need to remember: there are guys 200 meters down the beach that are getting blasted out of motar-holes by the craziest RPK fire the world has ever heard of... meanwhile, you're collecting sea-shells with Shelly on the sea-shore.
I get the over all theme. 100% agree. Also, I don’t remember ever shutting down or restarting my MacBook Pro (M1) in years. That thing still operates at 100%
The last couple of years I have been using Wim Hof breathing as a reset button. It worked every time. I guess something as fundamental as breath control can never fail.
I thought Jocko was going to suggest taking a nap or going to sleep to reset. I find that def refreshes my mind/emotions than taking an action unless that action is to detach and take a breath.
Man as an 18 year old kid, Jocko’s analogies are hard to wrap my head around. Also Echo’s movie analogies require research (but I discovered some good movies at least). I think these guys may be getting old but the way they go on a tangent to explain is definitely entertaining lol.
I just have to create a playlist real quick... *A few moments later* Day is over and I've gone from two playlists to reinstalling my operating system. Also, the two playlists I used to have are gone. To be fair, I need a great playlist to get anything done, so this outcome isn't a surprise.
It's interesting hearing people who don't know very much about how computers work talk about their experiences and their internal mental models of what must be going on inside the computer to cause the behavior they're seeing. I know that I have a lot of specialized knowledge, and that other people have chosen different sets of specialized knowledge, or to focus on some other aspect of their lives or personal growth, and that there are no reasonable value judgements to be made, in general, about those choices. I just find it an interesting datapoint, especially from the standpoint of UX design. In my opiniong, a good UX design encourages people using the UX to develop a semi-coherent mental model of what's going on inside that at least bears some resemblance to reality. In general, "heavy computation" is not what causes crashes. It's specific kinds of tasks that exercise specific parts of the system that are poorly written, either through carelessness, or because it's really hard to write them correctly. Sometimes, it can be specific tasks that exercise a specific piece of hardware in a certain unusual way and it's actually the hardware that's at fault. Though most hardware problems like that nowadays are papered over by software that's compensating for the defect. Windows is a complete jumbled mess inside that is far more complex than it needs to be. It's a poorly written pile of trash. And this is an organizational and historical problem, and not a reflection on any individual programmer working at Microsoft or even a general observation about the quality of programmers Microsoft hires. A poor organization can create terrible software even if they only hire exceedingly competent people.

Excellent brothers 👍💯👏👏👏
Great advice! I need a reset right now!
Great analogy! 💯👏👊
Just found this channel a couple days ago, I like it, solid
A reset on a PC refreshes your memory which matters less when you have 32gb or more but most people have 4-16GB. For a lot of people they will reset when updating drivers so they’ll feel like they never reset when they actually reset a lot.
Jocko you are hectic thank you Sir
Jocko's voice is ASMR for me. Awesome.
NICE WORK!!! Jocko keeping us honest and in knowledge =P
i lost all my friends when i stopped attending school during covid and graduated without any of them.
My love of timers is growing.
imagine the editor listening to them trying to talk about how computers work
I've been through a long list of very terrible things which have left me disabled.
That clock thing is called time-blocking. Great concept
Ohhhh I needed this.
When I feel like life isn't making any sense to me.
thank you!!
Jocko and Echo you guys rock
Do you remember F5? It would take you to a page behind a page behind a page to a black screen with a blinking box. The box could be blue or green depending on what your preference was and it just sat there blinking, blinking, blinking. That's where I Am Black, nomad's, space, blinking.
Setting a clock is one of the things that kernels actually do to pull up out of control processes. It's called a "watchdog timer". If you don't check in with that watchdog the kernel can say "you're fucked up" and tear down the process to stop it from affecting everything.
Great talk gentlemen. Would love to see a 5min Jocko stretch routine.
Nate
As for stretching, I've been learning that it's more important _after_ the workout, because we tighten up, and that's when we do damage.
Stretch before a workout or exercise and a light cool down after whatever you do is what your supposed to do
Add in restoration yoga for max recovery.
Big one for setting timers. Been doing it for years - especially on tasks i will likely procrastinate on and Im easily distracted. The timer gives me a focus point. It also stops getting over involved (unless its really neccisary) and can also turn things into a game. - how much can i fix in the house in 45 minutes - im only going to sit in the office for 90 minutes - how many quotes can i get through? . Ive 10 minutes to get as much firewood stacked as i can. etc etc.
This is exactly what I needed to hear
Dude that was funny when he laughed at him for holding that pen😂
Thanks for what you guys do
Great Job! Non-Repair!
Usually, by the time I hit the reset button I probably could have hit it sooner. Every now and again it's important to take a step back and evaluate.
imagine being Echo and just getting yelled at to wake up almost everyday of his life by Jocko
I need a reset, thanks Jocko.
Jocko with cup of coffee in the morning is best for me.
Damn we're bringing back the windows vs mac convo from the early 2000s! Hell yeah! I had the imac g3 baby in purple 😂😂😂😂
Jocko totally catches himself giving an “Echo Charles analogy” @ 5:45’ish 😂😂
Bloody marvellous, as always
Underground Jocko tough dude 😎
Echo’s orating and vocab is next level from the early episodes. Still love the pidgin accent but his conversation game has improved exponentially. 💪💪💪💪 nice work big fella
GOD BLESS 🙏
The clock thing is amazing I find myself in my basement stretching and meditating 2 hours later never worked out at all
Great analogies here and a lot of great mind inducing, thought processing done here with these two SEALS/gentlemen. Some big things to take in mind here
Definitely very mind inducing.
Sounds like echo’s vacation reset is more like a computer setup, do a little bit, restart, do a little, restart, etc. 🏝️ 😂
Hearing Echo's voice and then seeing him, always throws me.
A clear sign of needing a reset is saving this to your watch later
Oof felt this
I get the over all theme. 100% agree. Also, I don’t remember ever shutting down or restarting my MacBook Pro (M1) in years. That thing still operates at 100%
😂😂 when echo says. What are you doing
It's huge to take from these platforms any control like censorship. I agree a hundred percent.
Good advice
Man as an 18 year old kid, Jocko’s analogies are hard to wrap my head around. Also Echo’s movie analogies require research (but I discovered some good movies at least). I think these guys may be getting old but the way they go on a tangent to explain is definitely entertaining lol.
Old? They could be my kids.
Amen
@@kennethcurtis1856 well yeah from an 18yr olds perspective these guys are old
This kind of comment makes me lose whatever hope I still had left in humankind
You're just young
This video made me get up and do the laundry thanks
Similar to Windows' Ctrl+Alt+Delete Task Manager, the Command+Option+Esc shortcut opens the Force Quit box,
so glad this video got recommended to me today, i was having issues with brain lock
I just have to create a playlist real quick... *A few moments later* Day is over and I've gone from two playlists to reinstalling my operating system. Also, the two playlists I used to have are gone.
To be fair, I need a great playlist to get anything done, so this outcome isn't a surprise.
I appreciate the quote about putting a time on some things in your life but I can see this going wrong for at least one thing
As someone who has worked in IT, I've always said to people, "Computers are just like the brain, they sometimes the get confused".
Good explanation sir
