Hello Jason, I've slowly trying to upgrade my build, but I fear I might be slowly going down the wrong path! Got a new GPU then had to upgrade my PSU and then everything just started unfolding. Looking at a ÂŁ500 give or take. I used the pc for casual games like CSGO/Source, Tomb Raider and also use it for music production. Thanks a bunch in advance!

I love Boost My Build! It's an awesome and interactive way to communicate and also get actual curated help from someone that is well-versed with computers and has the first-hand experience of experimenting and benchmarking with actual up-to-date hardware. Not only that, but you also dive into ALL the components of the system and actually "boost the build". You are awesome, Jason! Keep up with the videos and this series! For the first build it is actually good bang for buck. The 5500 was at $89 and Asus Prime ii is $80.

also good chance that B450 board will infact post unless its really old stock. And even if it is AMD will usually ship a single core CPU to you which will allow you to flash the bios to one which supports the 5500.
Also.... 6500XT wont work on PCI-E gen3? someone forgot to tell my GPU that.

@@Sovek86 yeah new stock boards should support the lastest CPUs but to be safe get one with a bios flashback. 6500XT/6400 needs pcie 4 to run optimally.

I always find value in Boost My Build videos! I'll consider myself an experienced PC builder since I've built my own PC systems for the past 20 years, and built several mining rigs myself in 2021, but I'm still learning so much from Jason's Boost My Build videos, because he highlights many subtle areas that can limit performance and really optimises the budget to squeeze out the maximum performance possible. Especially shaving cost away from PC cases and directing them to upgrade the other parts.
The part about Nvidia GPUs being better for Adobe software compared to Radeon GPUs really surprised me as I didn't even know about that, and Davinci Resolve being faster on the 7900XT compared to the 4080 really surprised me as well.

For the first build, I definitely would have gone with a B550 board over an A520, just so he has PCI-E Gen 4 compatibility for when he inevitability wants to upgrade the CPU.
Last build, I would question going with a 3070 over a 3060ti. I'm not sure about the video editing aspect but in gaming, the difference between those two cards is usually less than 10 FPS and you will typically end up spending at least $100 extra for that small gain. You are right in saying that this build deserves a 3080 though, especially at this price point. I would also have tried to get a 7200 RPM HDD in there.

It's also 50 dollars, it comes with 4 RGB fans, an RGB hub, 2 SSD and 2 HDD holders, and the fans aren't on the bottom. I do admit that Gamemax doesn't make very reliable PSUs, but their cases are really good in cost efficency. I am confident that this case is one of the best ones for the price.

Hi Jason. Love the channel! Would you do a video discussing audio codecs in motherboards and the associated audio peripherals? It's a common theme when you're evaluating mobos but it's still a weaker part of my understanding when building PCs. Like you, I value great audio input/output so my teammates clearly hear me and for me to enjoy a premium sound/music feel. Typical questions range from what is a digital or analog signal? is digital or analog input better? should I plug audio peripherals straight into the motherboard or the case's front IO panel? What is ALC? 1200? 1220? etc? Thank you very much in advance!

    Hi Jason.
Give me what you think of this build:
    > i5-12400 (UHD 730)
    > 2x8 Gb G.Skill DDR4 CL16 3200 MHz
    > Asus TUF Gaming B660M-Plus WiFi D4
    > Gigabyte Aorus 500 Gb
    > Crucial P5 Plus 1Tb
    > Toshiba P300 3Tb
    > Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh ARGB
    > Corsair RM 750X
    > Arctic Freezer 34 Esports Duo
    > 2x Be Quiet! Silent Wing 3 PMW 120mm & 140mm (one of each mm)
This is not a question of "should i buy it" since it's my PC for the last 6 months.
The question is, since i still don't have a dedicated GPU, what should i go for?
I was thinking on a RTX 3060 Ti (the RTX 40 might be too much for the CPU to handle)
As for the use of the PC, gaming, internet and some videos/movies/tv shows; i don't do heavy work on this one.
I'm a SP gamer, i rarely play MP, and my tastes are vast when it comes to genres; but i do like to max out as far as i can.
As for the reason of not getting a GPU...i was absent from gaming for the last 10 years (yeah i know, i have a lot of catching up to do) as such i'm playing a lot of older games (and some indies not so old) that don't need more than the UHD 730 so i felt i could let it slide for the moment, less money to spend.
For example, i just played Prey (2006) perfectly, all maxed out, at 60fps.

    G.Skill 64GB 3600MHz RAM
    MSi z690 motherboard
    2TB NVME 2280
    Dell 27" 1440p 165Hz monitor
    to stay in budget:
    Zotac RTX 3070
    Cooler Master 750W 80 Plus
    Random cheap case
Video editing with an i5 or less than 64GB memory just seemed stupid so wanted to check if I could get within budget and don't think I did too badly. Now gonna watch the rest :)

Hey Jason, I live in London, UK. Last year my iMac died during the mid-peak crisis, so my hand was forced into building a new PC ASAP. I've already built my PC with the help of my more knowledgeable sibling, but I'd want your insight if it was money well spent.
At the time, the PC was mainly for my studies and gaming. A few months after my studies ended, I realised how terrible my AOC monitor (ÂŁ180) was when I started hardcore gaming and immediately bought the G7 Odyssey (ÂŁ420 discount). After that, my 'hope' was to game at 240fps to match the Hz, but I got hit with reality as soon as I booted up Warzone 1 for the first time and got 150fps on competitive settings. 70-150 fps on other single-player games - GoW, Tomb Raider, Spiderman, Witcher 3, A Plague Tale on high-ultra. The only game to hit 200-240 fps was the mass effect remastered series xD. FYI those numbers are without RTX since those numbers significantly drop to unstable 60fps.
I originally went with the 5600x (ÂŁ330 at the time) but upgraded to 5800x3D last month (ÂŁ360). I won a ÂŁ1400 Amazon voucher, so I got my MSI 3070 (ÂŁ1200 - ik, man, there was nothing I could've done) and my SM850 NVME for free. PCPARTPICKER didn't have my PC case, but it is the Tecware VXR for ~ÂŁ90. x570e mobo for ÂŁ300.
Can you please look at my PC build and lmk where I spent too much or if there were better alternatives? How can I hit my goal of close to ~240fps without modifying my build significantly? I was thinking of a 4080(ti) soon, but those prices are insanely ridiculous. Whereas a used 3090 on eBay goes for ~ÂŁ700-900, the 4080 looks better when the difference is just another ÂŁ300. I really don't know where to go from here. Leave it as it is right now, get a 3090 or wait for price drops on the 40 series. AMD really let us down this year so I'm going to avoid those. Lmk what you think is the best course of action and whether I built a decent PC spec-wise. TY

Obviously people that want to either build/upgrade their overall PC specs shouldn't be using 3.0 anymore but if you are stuck with 3.0 like me, PCIe 4.0 GPUs are still very good and will work just fine without any problems.

He is currently using a used RX 580 and he has asked for gift cards for his birthday in couple months, what would be his best upgrade route around the $400 range. We would like to run high setting at 1080p or mid settings at 1440p. I know you have recommended 6600xt for this type of build but with GPU prices declining what is also the biggest GPU that a 5600x can push with a possible 5800x upgrade next holiday season. there are actually quite a few A520M motherboards out there with the the necessary firmware already installed to run ryzen 5000 series. 100 dollars for a A520m is to be honest an overspend. You could actually go back to the B450M and see if you can do one of 2 things: ask somebody you now an AMD ryzen 3000 chip to lend it and do a bios update that way, or ask the vendor to update it for you.

Just a side note I think the asus duel models of nvidia and amd graphics cards are a bit underrated for example, there are only 2 models of 6700xt in Australia that will fit in my case due to my poor motherboard choice the sapphire pulse and the asus duel. The sapphire has nothing wrong with it but has no cool lighting and the black and red dosent fit a lot of color schemes very well. The asus on the other hand looks great with a slick black design and has a small amount of lighting which makes all the difference

And also the Aerocool, addressable, three fan RGB set to go with it (ÂŁ25). I must say that for the price of the case, it was an excellent buy and fully justifies your recommendation. The best thing about it apart from the case in general, is the room you have to build in. Why this case wasn't/isn't being sold in the US is beyond me.

Hey Jason, I love the series and I'm usually very impressed with how good your parts lists are especially compared to other youtubers. That being said I disagree with the first list. You said b660 motherboards are priced too high and yet you've went with an expensive a520 motherboard in your list , which is essentially equivalent to intels h610s, which are cheaper than that motherboard in your list. theres also currently an asrock b660 for 80 dollars. in terms of gaming performance the 12100f is slightly better and you'd actually save 10 dollars and gain a slight bit of performance going with intel there.

I was going to make the point that you can get a windows 11 key for a few bucks, but then I also realized this person cannot even run the dvd because the build has no dvd drive. I was surprised you did not pick up on that.
In short, get rid of the w11 dvd. Buy a 5 dollar or so key on a webshop, make a w11 media usb drive for installation, and put the money maybe in another nvme drive to get fully rid of that awful hdd drive.

Hard drives are still a way from being done in my opinion. Anyone who does serious videography or video editing will probably need a large amount of storage. At the moment you can bung two 16TB hard drives into any mid size tower case and get 32TB of storage for $500. The closest you can get to this with SSDs is to buy 4x 8TB drives costing well over $500 each. While HDDs are great for storage, of course I agree that some kind of SSD is a must to actually work from.

Regarding the second build and ray tracing being worth it or not:
It hugely varies how much RT matters to the individual and what games you are trying to play. And as someone who is big on ray tracing, I'm going to have to disagree with you that mid-level Nvidia ray tracing isn't worth it right now. In fact, I'd even argue that ray tracing is worth it on AMD cards too in most games (i.e. not Cyberpunk). If you're a ray tracing fanatic, then definitely buy Nvidia, but AMD is far from worthless for ray tracing. I've even managed to get Minecraft RTX playable at 900p using FSR 2 on AMD's latest RDNA2 iGPUs! iGPUs!
That's a great sign for the future of ray tracing and considering it's been a focus point for improvement in Ampere, Ada and RDNA3, I think there's a bright future ahead for fans of ray tracing!

I honestly think there's nothing wrong with splurging on the case. A case can easily last for more than 20 years, so spending more for a fancy case can be totally worth it, as long as it's a well reviewed case. Getting good quality case fans is even more worthwhile imo, as they can just last a really long time, make less noise, and end up saving you money in the long term (and you often get really good fans with a high-end case). For CPU coolers, I like good quality air coolers because they just last forever (unlike liquid+pump coolers), and the fans are VERY easy to replace if they ever go.
I've been using Noctua fans for about 8 years now, and even the first ones I bought 8 years ago are still going strong. I have been absolutely blown away by how good Noctua fans and coolers are. They sent me a free adapter upgrade kit for my CPU cooler when I moved from AM3 to AM4, and this was for a long discontinued model.

    • @PCBuilderChannel

Best medium/high end build IMHO will be a 10th or 11th gen Intel CPU. either i9 or i7. Mother boards are well priced and the Z490E strix would be my choice, The Z590E will be more expensive with no benefits for gaming. Both Z490 and Z590 will work with 11th gen but the 490 might require a bios update. DDR4 ram 3600 speed will do just fine and some sort of SSD drive, @ least 1TB and some external storage as the games and DLC do use up a lot of space on that drive! For High end latest and greatest PC, here are my recommendations... i9 12900K/13900K, DDR5 ram 5200-6200 speed, Z690E strix mobo with bios update, the Z790E can be used but more expensive with no benefit for gamers. At least a RTX 3080/3080ti or better yet 3090/3090ti. Anything higher up the tier like the new 4000 series NVIDIA 3080/3090s will be more but not necessary FPS as the 3080/3090s can certainly put out enough FPS to satisfy most if not everyone. I don't know much about the AMD stuff so I can't mention any AMD picks but I'm sure AMD is awesome and the latest as well as the previous gen stuff are amazing as well.

I've been taking fire for my build recently - and I get it - I really do. Its B450, 5600X, 32GB DDR4 with a... wait for it - 1050Ti 4GB. Oh, and about 40TB of USB 3 storage, not an SSD in sight.... As I keep trying to explain to people... money. Cash. The Green Devil. I had the 1050Ti already, and a case and a decent Corsair PSU. But everything else was very, very old. So I went with the best old mobo I could find (MSI Tomahawk B450 MkII) and decent cpu (5600X) and 32GB DDR4 ram... yes, I am deliberately not stating its speed. I bought the slow stuff, OK? But the amount of online commenters basically demanding I upgrade the graphics!!!! OK, its "only" a 1050Ti, but it handles pretty much everything I throw at it. Yes I definately need a better card, but for at least 18 months, I can't afford one. But the pure grunt of the PC compensates a lot. Obviously not quite enough.... its never quite enough, is it? Right now I'm happy with it. I know the 1060 (one model up) would open new modes etc but... well, I simply don't have the cash, and will not for a long time. So - over powered base system bottlenecked at GPU "Is Us". heheh. [Edit] Sorry - I had to edit... I also blew a shed load of my budget on a screen. And... I bought the wrong one... I was so hung up on getting a 32" 4K I just... forgot about Hz... Samsung U32J59X... max 60Hz.... Fine for RTS... crap for FPS, and cos its high res.. expensive anyway... Yeah, I screwed that one up.

Question, I just got my rx 6600 asus dual, and now I wanna get a new motherboard, cpu and case, is there any budget parts?

For me, get a budget decent B550, which is the MSI b550m pro VC wifi, a Ryzen 5 5600, and any case would be good whether its ATX or MATX that has fans and great airflow and supports your GPU.

B450 will run the r5 5500 with the update to bios 62. The gigabyte app-center software will update bios from a 2nd or 3rd gen Ryzen chip that AMD will provide if you ask them. You have to send it back. B450 is gen 3 only but it will run the r5 5600 for about $120 with bios update. Aliexpress has new rx580's for about $80. I bought a RX5500xt 3rd gen for a B450 board thru there for $100.

can you please recommend me a cheap case without RGB (I hate RGB), and no side window, 4x 3.5 slots, and a slot for an optical drive??

the last build you left in the DVD version of windows. Either the Downnloaded or USB version (retail/OEM) would actually work as there is no DVD drive

In videos he recommends 3200 MHz so I assume any kit with that speed would be fine.

i cant believe how much the prices on gpus fluctuate , in july i got a evga ftw 3080 10 gig for the price of what the higher end 3060 ti's are costing now.

  • @TotemoGaijin
    @TotemoGaijin Pƙed rokem

Man, these gpus have sure gotten power hungry the last couple years. I think my 2060 only needed like 500W or 550W or something.

Hey! Just did a case upgrade from an alienware prebuilt case that was getting terrible thermals to the new fractal pop air, which I really like the look of with a x570s aorus elite, I think. I'll be moving a 3060 ti and a 5600x into it with a 280mm aio because I plan to get a way beefier cpu soon... did I go too crazy with the cooling? I want to push my current components as far overclocked as they can go and also give myself a good future upgrade path... did I make any major ooopsies?

    • @PCBuilderChannel
      @PCBuilderChannel  Pƙed rokem

Yes, overkill and a problem if investing in the AIO is keeping you from putting that money into a better GPU. You will see better performance by upgrading your GPU, not your AIO. See our latest "How to Pick PC Parts" video on the channel for more on this
