  • In this video, I replace a broken liftgate actuator on my 2011 Cadillac SRX. To replace it I had to remove a few panels and the trunk floorboard. This job was not as complicated as I thought it was going to be. The total job took about 3 hrs from start to finish. This guide walks you through each step of the way, so you shouldn't have any issues or surprises. Be patient when removing and reinstalling the side panels.

    Good job and great explanation. As a 2x SRX owner (2005 and a 2012, still have both) this is major surgery and very invasive. The video shows the exact process and is a wealth of info. Kudo's for the video, bro. It shows how to do it right and he doesn't leave anything out. Follow his instructions and you can save yourself hundreds of dollars. One of the best DIY SRX videos I've seen.

    Just did this on a vehicle. Your instructions were great and I only managed to break 1 clip for the panels. For those of you doing this, take extra care while removing the left side panel on the hydraulic side. The fastener holder that's glued to the panel on the inside actually broke off entirely. Not the cheap clip but the part that holds the clip. Anyhow, thank you for the video.

    Good detailed step by step replacement of hydraulic pump / motor. This is a very common problem on SRX’s. First try replacing liftgate control module. Many times that is a quick inexpensive fix. It gets corroded from water dumped in cargo area from sun roof drains and rear window washer. Secondly you may have to replace only the hydraulic lift motor which does all the work of lifting and closing. There are two hex bolts holding motor to pump. Several videos to show simple replacement. This should resolve issue with liftgate not operating. Lastly, disconnect battery for a few minutes after part replacements. Kudos on your video.....well done!

    After replacing the lift gate control module it does have to be programmed or re-learned. This does require a visit to a GM dealership where they can do with a tech II scanner. Cost is about half hour labor charge....$60. to $75. Replacing the module yourself saves several hundred dollars a dealership would charge for parts and labor. Anyone who has a tech II scanner like the one used by GM ($200.+) could do their own programming following guidance from other you tube videos or web searches. Many commonly used OBD scanners are readers and can clear codes, but have no programming capabilities.

    Great video! Thanks for posting. I started to only replace the arm/support, but decided to check the pump while i had everything torn apart. Glad i did, as i found the motor or actuator had been leaking (although there appears to be sufficient fluid in the reservoir). Anyway, i'm waiting on the new motor/pump, but wanted to close the liftgate to use the vehicle. I hooked the newly installed arm support cables to the old motor pump and it has to go through a couple of cycles to fully close the door, and it apparently doesn't have the strength to open. I'm hoping it's a motor/pump problem, although it was working before i replaced the arm (the door had started to slowly drop when open). Any ideas as to why it wouldn't immediately work? Can air get in the lines? Thanks.

    I had liftgate unlocking an opening problem on my 2012 SRX. I did found water in trunk after unlocking and manually opening. So I took to Cadillac dealer he suggested to replace the lift gate module and liftgate pump . Quoted was $1600.
    I replaced liftgate control module by myself. Now pushing button on trunk and remote it unlock but it didn't rise. I can push open but it get jerk on half way opening as shown on your video. then I have to apply little more push then it rise all the way. So I got module programmed by Chevrolet dealer. Still it unlocks by remote but doesn't rise. tgate actuator I don't have any leak on fluid .

    • @elibaier
      @elibaier  Před 3 lety

      Did it work when the Cadillac dealer first replaced the liftgate actuator a few years ago? You may have a fluid leak somewhere closer to the actual pump itself or the reservoir may have low fluid in it. It sounds like a low fluid issue or that the liftgate is not getting enough electricity...

    Did you do procedure #9 " Install the pump without the trim and inspect for proper operation and fluid level. The fluid level can be checked after cycling the liftgate 3-5 times to ensure proper fluid level. If the fluid is still low repeat the procedure." or did you just skip that. I'm not sure what they mean by install without the "trim". Thanks

      Install without the trim would be to try out the liftgate without putting the plastic interior pieces back on. Testing it then will prevent you from having to tear it all back apart if you ran into an issue.

    Hi. I have a problem with my liftgate as well. Just not sure exactly what parts need to be replaced. I purchased it as a used vehicle and trunk didn’t open when I purchased it.. the previous owner did say he replaced the latch but didn’t work for him.. looks like the module was also replaced but not so sure. When I press the trunk button on the fob it blinks and makes a sound but nothing else happens. When i try to open with the tailgate button same thing it blinks makes a sound but that’s it. Does it need to be programmed? I definitely know the hydraulic pump needs to be replaced as well it has a lot of corrosion, just don’t think this is the cause of the tail not unlocking? Any input will help. Thanks

    • @elibaier
      @elibaier  Před 3 lety

      Yeah, it is tough to say for sure what it could be. I would start by changing the pump and actuator and adding fresh hydraulic fluid. That way you are essentially eliminating any mechanical issues on the latch opening. Is your liftgate staying locked? If that is the case, it sounds like an electrical issue around the latch. It could be that you have one bad wire that is not sending the correct signal, so you could check that.

  • @forzaworld

    • @elibaier
      @elibaier  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the question! It sounds like you have already done some amount of troubleshooting. You could very well have a leak and just not know. I would take apart just the floor of your trunk and take a look at your reservoir and pump. You may find your issue there. It doesn't sound like you have any electrical issues, so keep looking for something mechanical that could be causing it to bind up.

      I removed the new pump And reinstalled the old pump to see if it was making the same noise and it didn’t so I am assuming the new pump is defective. I am returning it.

      It's like they intentionally make it difficult. I have a full front headlight assembly replacement coming my way as soon as the parts arrive. The lift gate is next. Already it nearly gave my gf a trip to the hospital and stitches. But I'm glad I found this video again because it is going to be useful for me in the near future.

    Well that didn’t work… damn thing is worse than when i started… now it wont do shit,,, pump runs for 2 seconds and quits…

      Schucks... do you think you have an electrical problem or mechanical? How did your fluid reservoir look? Does it only run for ~2 seconds while trying to open? Does it do the same when trying to close?

      @@elibaier its obviously mechanical,,, the arm is brand new and the pump is brand new,, when its locked in place it only pops the lock mechanism , if its popped, it wont even try to lift the gate, it is open, it won’t try to lower the gate,,, I’m not an ASE certified mechanic but i have never had to take a vehicle to a dealer for mechanical issues.. in its simplest form its a pump, lines and a actuator, also in no video that i have found on this issue has anyone had to or even mentioned having to bleed the system in order for it to work, they all replaced the arm, topped off the hyd oil and pushed the button and it worked first time,,

      Sounds frustrating… the reason you don’t have to bleed the hydraulic system is because the lines are all supposed to come completely filled.
      It almost sounds like your pump is getting a shut off signal… I wish I could help more..

      Ok update… got out my power probe and took the arm off the lift gate.. i could make the arm extend and then it would automatically retract when i disconnected the power probe… got to thinking about the pump position… its horizontal so i turned it and now it will run for an appropriate amount of time to lift or lower the gate but it wont lift or lower it… also changed out the control module so now all three parts of the system are brand new… i guess I’m taking it to a dealer so they can break it off in my wallet….
