    When a teacher has given so much to his students and we see them with such admiration it can be easy to turn a blind eye to something which in any other circumstance we might promptly question. So at the risk of making myself unpopular I'll share my view and say that to my mind striking the student in that moment and in that way didn't seem necessary and I'm open to engaging in a discussion with anyone who wishes to do so.
    To actually look at what happened - Iyengar mentions that his intention (or desired outcome) is to help correct the mistake of the student. To put it another way we could say that it's to help the student to understand and grow in their practice. Is this a positive intention to meet the development need of the student? Yes, absolutely. But to ask a second question... could we find other ways to reach such an outcome? I think we could probably say that if we're to be open minded and creative there are many different ways which don't require a physical strike. Even in the role of the teacher we must still be willing to be a student ourself shouldn't we?
    I see others in the comments section have mentioned about Iyengar's wisdom and skill as a teacher - and with this I'm in full agreement. What he has given to the word has been a great gift and I am grateful for everything I've learned from my teacher who trained with him for a period of time. I also accept that it can be necessary, in the right moment to raise one's voice and speak directly to students making them question their understanding and/or behaviour. I've seen my teachers do so when the time is right and I with this I see no issue.
    Other comments seem to have focused on tradition, not questioning the teacher or "it's how it's done in India" etc. But to accept something simply because it's already there without looking to question and transform it for the better is at best a little lazy is it not? And if we take that reasoning we could also say "well it's how it was done in Germany in the 40's." and I think we can all see the danger in that.
    So let us not shy away from difficult discussion if they need to be had. Mr Iyengar was a great teacher and will continue to be so in my eyes. Unfortunately however I'm just not convinced that he had to strike anyone to achieve the same results, especially in this moment which is there for us all to see.

    40 years ago when I started, Yoga used to be about sacrifice, focus, and discipline. The yoga we do today is so westernized and departed from the origin of yoga. We’ve made it into a feel good movement. But from the perspective of the Yoga Sutras, written 500-3000 year BC, yoga is a tool for existing in a difficult hard cruel world. It’s was not made for hugs and good vibes.
    There’s also a basic misunderstanding in the comment section about Indian culture. We need to remember that India in the time of Iyengar and now is very very very different than the West. It is not our place to judge the way of life of an entire different country. That’s a massive fault westerners have.
    The woman he hits is his daughter Geeta Iyengar. And while we don’t find that acceptable in the Western world, Iyengar grew up with dirt floors in extreme poverty in early 1900 India. In his time, that was not only acceptable but praised. It’s unrealistic to expect him to have been different than his society because they didn’t think that was wrong.
    As with everything in life, so with Iyengar’s teachings, take what you like, leave what you don’t. Even the yoga sutras say to not make a guru a god. And Iyengar mentions Patanjali many times in this video.
    I can say having taught yoga for 20 years, owned 3 studios, and now teaching full time online. The students in this video have a much safer practice than the majority of the people I see today.
    Personally, I feel like we should bring back pantaloons 😂😂❤

    • @Seryogaji
      @Seryogaji  Před 3 měsíci

      But:) this is yoga convention in the USA, not in India. So rules "another country or culture" not relevant here. USA practitioners could not implement such behavior on their students, so Iyengar can do whatever he want. But his students - don't. So he is limiting them with his own examples.
      When you in Rome, do as the Romans do. So appropriate here would be teaching the way it possible on the US. That would be great example of fluid and sharped mind at the same time

    Just so you all know, a yogi has to practice non-violence. It’s is the foundation towards path of higher consciousness. Patañjali have talked about it in the very beginning, the Yama and niyama. Please avoid any form of ignorance.

    • @rajhassridharaniyengar7359
      @rajhassridharaniyengar7359 Před rokem +1

      Yes. However the psychological motive behind himsa (violence) is personal gain, fear and fulfillment of personal desire. This is what Krishna too says to Arjuna before he goes into war. If you fight without fear or to gain, then you are doing what’s necessary and its not violence. We all dont know how long that person has been studying yoga with Guruji and she also seems like she knows what shes getting into. When our parents or our teachers scold us or give us a strong smack sometimes, its not the most graceful way of explaining something, but its not always evil is what I feel. I am sure there will be many opinions about this. But If my teacher would have to use force to awaken my absent mindedness I wouldnt mind it. But thats me.

      This wasn’t a loss of patience we observed… he very clearly set her up for that as a planned act of violence and humiliation. Methodical, intentional abuse is what is shown here. Complete with the immediate making of excuses and victim blaming afterwards. Watch the few moments before he hits her and see how he sets her up to “fail” so that he can “teach” (abuse) her. These are clear, abusive power dynamics at work, not a simply an impatient yogi.

    The role of the Guru. Most Yogic teaching was shrouded in secrecy, & still is today. The only way to secure the teachings & understand them was to set at the feet of the guru. To do that one must learn from a traditional yoga guru. Iyengar was one of the best.
    This woman knew what his teaching was like. The Sanskrit word Guru means to take a student from the darkness into the light. The guru job was to remove the veil of ignorance; to open the student eyes 👀 to what is real, & to awaken the powers within him or her. Iyengar kept her from doing damage or from breaking her neck because of her lack of awareness. Iyengar transmitted shaktipat ( the blessing of psychospiritual energy that she needed) at the right time before she made the mistake and hurt herself. Yoga is not play, & America has changed the traditional Yoga into 💰 money Yoga .... Leaving behind the meaning of Guru for that means leaving yourself in the dark.

    BSK Iyengar is a master level teacher. The student put herself at risk, & in danger by having the blanket wrong. Most Americans do not understand his methods of teaching. I have studied from two of his students who lived in India. One is a California State University professor. They know that only a few get chosen to train at the Iyengar Yoga Ashram. The wait ✋ list was about 6 months. The students are very discipline ; headstands takes a lot of discipline too, & one screw up could be very costly to the human body. If she broke her neck because of doing something wrong then those complaining would of blamed BKS Iyengar in some kind of way. Learning Yoga in India; learning Yoga in America , or anywhere else is two different Yoga's .. That is until you learn Yoga from BKS Iyengar . Trust me that slap sound came more from the microphone. I seen Iyengar get a man attention in a pranayama seminar in India the same way he did his female student . Either way, i heard Indra Devi speak about how hard training under Krishnamacharya was. No different then his student BKS Iyengar. The woman was chosen to demostrate the head stand because their was a trust between Guru and Student. In India the teaching is different then America. Iyengar had a lot of adult women students, and none of them ever complained like those i witnessing on CZcams. In fact, his students that i trained with are highly intelligent ( attorneys, math and physic teachers) and their relationship was one of teacher and student. They loved Iyengar like a father. Again they never complained.

    People can justify violence in any form or any way to put themselvea in a position where violence can be accepted. That way, when they engage in violent behaviors towards other people they can feel that is right. I came to the watch this video to keep on learning, and I learned other things aside Sirsasana. His hitting was done with anger and an energy of superiority. He didn't do it for love of his disciple, it was for love of his own ego. So dissapointed...

    • @TheOriginalEntz
      @TheOriginalEntz Před 5 lety

      It was passed down to him from his teacher Ramakrishna. Ramakrishna was very harsh on students.... because of ego. Ego is strong thing and difficult to overcome when one encounters their own boundaries. Ego of Ramakrishna is evident when we learn about what he said about hatha yoga pradipika. Instead of accepting full text as his guru he said parts were false and not in the right spirit, were added by some one with ill intent. That was his ego screaming out against something too unusual and so his ego was never given up. Thus this error of unconquered ego kept being passed on to others. We are all capable of greater love, greater union, greater self realization than we witness in this video. Glad so many souls are seeing issues with some thing in the video - it means they are checking what they see against inner teacher , inner access to infinite creative divinity. It is like checking notes we hear against a tuning fork :)

      Agree with you. I grew up in India. Parents and Teachers in Indian culture were placed above God and they were always allowed to use strict means of instruction because they are passing on wisdom earned through ages and the entire learning environment required everybody to approach learning with a sense of devotion. i.e. it is bigger than any person and any one self or their comforts and opinions. From that perspective, striking or a teacher being strict was not seen as "abuse" but as being very focused and interested in the teaching.
      All this may be difficult to explain or express but it is a different culture and one which fortunately survived an age of pure Industrial and Material world.

    What has all this obsession with the one an only way to do a pose got to do with just being a kind loving caring human being. I found him to be extremely angry and arrogant. Of course i was told its all my projection. The most enlightened people and gurus I met in 10 years in India was the Chai wallas and Rickshaw wallas and very often the cooks in the many Ashrams i visited. Was blessed to meet many wise people but they never said they were anything special.

      As Jois liked to say, yoga is 95% practice and 5% theory. It is about gaining "self-knowledge" (about the function of one's body and mind). Truth is, the original training, such as those gurus received themselves from their teacher Krishnamacharya, and as many of Jois' students recollect, was simply repeating the moves endlessly and obtaining some understanding in this process. No teacher can substitute this experimentation and internal knowledge. Insisting on everyone doing poses in the same way completely ignores things like differences in anatomy, flexibility, strength, and the current skill level of the practitioner. But there is market demand for "gurus" from the naive people, and so "gurus" are created and teach.

    Iyengar trained people are often obsessed with the "correct" way to do things, as this title implies though they only have one approach to the subject which must be qualified and used with careful delineation as to the aims of your practice, lest you go astray. Most real sadhus do not apply pressure at the top of the head as Iyengar commonly taught it. Many other instructions and approaches like this seen in traditional hatha are nowhere to be found in "Iyengar Yoga".

    several people seemed to think Guru ji is being abusive !! But Parents and Teachers in Indian culture were placed above God and they were always allowed to use strict means of instruction because they are passing on wisdom earned through ages and the entire learning environment required everybody to approach learning with a sense of devotion. i.e. it is bigger than any person and any one self or their comforts and opinions. From that perspective, striking or a teacher being strict was not seen as "abuse" but as being very focused and interested in the teaching.
    All this may be difficult to explain or express but it is a different culture and one which fortunately survived an age of pure Industrial and Material world.

If someone gets offended by Guru’s way of teaching, then they are not eligible to be his Shishya. If someone thinks Iyengar is aggressive, then read about Maharishi Vishwamitra.
