40 years ago when I started, Yoga used to be about sacrifice, focus, and discipline. The yoga we do today is so westernized and departed from the origin of yoga. We’ve made it into a feel good movement. But from the perspective of the Yoga Sutras, written 500-3000 year BC, yoga is a tool for existing in a difficult hard cruel world. It’s was not made for hugs and good vibes. There’s also a basic misunderstanding in the comment section about Indian culture. We need to remember that India in the time of Iyengar and now is very very very different than the West. It is not our place to judge the way of life of an entire different country. That’s a massive fault westerners have. The woman he hits is his daughter Geeta Iyengar. And while we don’t find that acceptable in the Western world, Iyengar grew up with dirt floors in extreme poverty in early 1900 India. In his time, that was not only acceptable but praised. It’s unrealistic to expect him to have been different than his society because they didn’t think that was wrong. As with everything in life, so with Iyengar’s teachings, take what you like, leave what you don’t. Even the yoga sutras say to not make a guru a god. And Iyengar mentions Patanjali many times in this video. I can say having taught yoga for 20 years, owned 3 studios, and now teaching full time online. The students in this video have a much safer practice than the majority of the people I see today. Personally, I feel like we should bring back pantaloons 😂😂❤
