  • Our first project with the hydraulic top and tilt kit on the LS MT357. Our gravel driveway got washed out and needed ditches and a crown reestablished. The top and tilt worked great with the box blade and land plane

You have a knack of creating video's that strike home with me. I've got a 1200' long gravel driveway. We moved into our newly built house last Nov and after watching a ton of video's on box blades vs land planes I purchased a box blade. After using it a couple of times to try and shape and smooth out our driveway, and not being happy with the results I purchased a land plane. Watching how you used both, really hit home with me as I now have a good idea of how to maximize the advantages of both pieces of equipment. I've got a TYM 574HC, which is very similar to your LS, and your going to force me (just kidding) to get a tilt kit. I've got the hydraulic top link, but have to manually tilt to get the crown, so... Love your channel, thanks for sharing.

The key with a driveway like that is to cut exit "gutters" into the side so that the water can be shuttled out and into the grass before it has a chance to build up speed and power. I've done "bump outs" in the past that are just very long speed bumps that are angled across the road. While it's only a rise of a few inches, it creates a dam that forces the water off of the driveway before the flow can get strong enough to start eroding anything. Since you already have the crown and gutters, look for a place along the slope where you could excavate some of the grass on the side and create a channel the water can exit through. Even one is better than none if it helps prevent similar instances.

A ditch bucket would be nice but not mandatory. Take the excavator and cut the bottom of the ditch along the road were you want the water to flow next take your tractor and place one side of the tractor wheels in that excavator cut and produce the angle cut from the road to the bottom of the flow line. You have enough tractor to accomplish this cut. You possess above average operator skills for a man not raised on machinery! Thanks for the videos!

Just remember, like you briefly touched on, a drive is a drive and a swale/ditch is a swale/ditch. As soon as you try to get one to do the job of the other, you'll get nothing out of either. Only exception is probably going to be with concrete. But practically speaking, recommend you plan to start cutting and excavating sooner rather than later. We know you can do it! :)

To make a ditch you grade the dirt onto the grass, also I have seen an outfit that was putting fill into an area and they mixed it 50X50 with cement powder and the area that was going to be a road was very hard. They put in 10 to 25 feet of fill though so it had lots of base.

Glad you like the new tractor, Adam! I'm impressed with the new hydraulics you've added. I'm a fan of the 'Full Third Function'. Was wondering if you have checked into the availability and or price of recycled Asphalt Millings. We use them a lot out here in the NW. Your dirt /dozer guy may be able to help you out with sourcing and laying down the millings. Grade your base good, then spread the millings and then roll them down with a heavy smooth drum roller. They are a fraction of the cost of a full-blown blacktop road, and they stand up way better than regular gravel. We used them on a heavy truck and equipment yard for 5yrs. now without any problems. (And there's a bonus - NO DUST in august!!) HAPPY TRAILS!

Another option for the driveway would be to put drain lines from the high side to the low side and have the rain water exit to daylight out in the grass away from the road. You would need a number of drains but it would keep the water from building up to the point of washing a deep gulley. The low side of the road could have a cut out into the grass to accomplish the same thing.
    Thanks for the video.

Not a fan of Limestone for a driveway. Mine is only about 100' X 15' and I had 9 tons of of # 78 Granite put down, about 4" thick. Quarry owner suggested the gravel based on what I wanted
Small business contractor leveled, delivered, dumped and spread it. Came later with his tractor and a leveling rake and smoothed it all nice and even.
Total cost for the gravel and work was $950. Very happy with the much improved driveway over the pea gravel original.
