I remember planting potatoes with my grandfather. We would sty up the night before cutting the eyes off that we planted. Man miss those memories for sure. We would have a 1/2 acre of potatoes the rest all vegetation you could think of that would grow in the south Texas area. We planted 1 1/2 acre of groceries and dang those veggies was the better than what you buy in the stores now. Homegrown is the best without all them chemicals the government wants yall to put on them. Yeah while it took some to keep the bugs, insects,etc away but dang love me some homemade veggies. That's what I remember as a young boy, helping my dad plant potatoes in Northeast Arkansas. We had what was called a middle buster and I would drive the A Farmall and dad would walk behind the tractor with his hands on the plow. I was 8 or 9 and the tractor was in first gear so he could keep up. Then we dropped the potatoes by hand then we would cover them by hand with a hand rake. It was hard work to plant a 1/2 of potatoes. By the way, this is my first time watching your videos, Doug.

I was raised on an 80-acre Spud farm near Buhl Idaho. 1947 Hand-cut seed eye per piece. Farmall F-30 tractor. Hand-picked and hand-bucked. School closed for harvest. Pickers got a nickel per sack. Lots of work but it was a great way to grow up.

There’s many ways to do it America and a few other countries do it like that over in the U.K. we ridge then separate the land and plant after personal think it’s a better way but everyone has there own opinion and does things differently and that’s okay also could depend on the land how you do it many ways to plant potatoes

Me and my brothers come and hunt pheasants in and around Shelley every year, harder to find em but still a good time. It was a great place to grow up in the 70’s and 80’s. Moving pipe, spud days and learning to drive everything imaginable starting around 7-8 years old. Thanks for sharing your operation.

This video could be mistaken for a southern Alberta potato farm, southern Alberta has the largest potato production in Canada. I used to contact haul vegetables to storage and processing plants, the biggest plants here being McCain's, Frito lay, lamb Weston and Cavendish Farms.

We were looking for a tele handler this year but we’re not able to find one that was affordable. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos.
I grew up on a small farm in northwest Ontario, Canada in 1950's. Dad had a one-row planter originally built to be pulled by 2 horses, used picks instead of vacuums but otherwise identical. Converted it to tractor pull when i was maybe 6 yrs old. Had a onerow digger as well, all worked excellent.
Yeah things have grown a bit since then. Spudnik makes a 12 row planter

This is perystaltic pump, they are very accurate and can work with various speed.

What are most farmers in your area planting? Do you rotate crops? What are they rotated with? Do you do any grain?
We rotate potatoes grain and some hay. There are a lot of crops grown around here. I’ve seen corn, canola, mustard, sugar beets, grass, and quinoa. There is probably something I’m missing.

Since you mentioned the brakes on your loader, I'm a mechanic and multiple people have brought in there case loaders thinking the brakes are bad but if you change the oil out with 80w140 transaxle oil the noise will go away.

Of you add friction modifier to the case axles it takes care of the brake noise. Coming from a mechanic who worked on a lot of high hour case loaders

Is that because CASE is a WET brake system. I cut my teeth on my dad's lap on the old 580- CK backhoe. Doing the front bucket backfill. I have run every model of the 580 series backhoe. When I retired I bought myself a Dynahoe-190. I ran one in 1979 it was a beast of 19000 pounds. My baby is a 1978 with 8000 hours on the old 353 Detroit Diesel. I keep clean oil and filter in her. And have an Engine block heater. It helps at start up on her.

One way to speed up your loading is to use a small conveyor lot less down time.

I always wondered how potatoes were planted now days. Several years ago I found this horse drawn potato planter at my in-laws place in South Dakota. I brought it home and restored it. It uses a similar principle in that it skewers the potatoes from the hopper and drops them in the ground and then has disks to cover them up.

Was loading in montana one time near Belgrade seems they had a bear decided to sleep in the bunker overnight. Workers were unpleasantly surprised when they were preparing to loads truck that morning

Hey drone footage really fantastic and amazing it amused me and such drone footage within mountain make scene very beautiful and this landscaping view is breathing you should make drone footage at the start of the video which makes video more interesting and why you don't use other type of planters like as spudnik or Grimme which fertilizer you apply down and how much per acre and how much you invest on potatoes this year thanks for making video
I’m glad you enjoyed the video I do like taking drone footage because of the mountains. We don’t use any other planters because they don’t go as fast. And we do put fertilizer down. I’m not sure how much per acre but we put 100 gallons per fill of the planter
You are blessed with great soil. Have you built up the ground with cover crops?
We have never actually done a cover crop, but we do haul, from my uncles dairy, about 4000 loads of cow manure every year so that really builds up the soil

You probably mentioned what variety of potato you plant and I missed it. They look like Russet potatoes. What percent of your harvest go to seed potatoes? Love the aerial view at the end.
I’m glad you liked the video. The variety of potato is a russet ranger. We don’t grow any of our own seed. All of these will go into making potato flakes that be turned into things like Pringles and mashed potatoes.
GPS sure helps planting around pivots, I typically use last years lines and can start at the pivot, makes it easy haha. Just finished planting yesterday :) hope things are going well!

OK I have questions…I was up in Ashton last weekend, where I know they grow lots of seed potatoes. (Actually, I was in Last Chance and drove through Ashton to fish the Warm River.) Anyway, the fields around Ashton were just beautifully leveled. Didn’t look like anything was planted in them at all. My question is this: Do you hill your fields before you plant them, or does the planter do that for you? And, do you hill your potatoes after you grow them? Finally, what is the difference between Lockwood and Double L equipment? Are they both good? Great video. I’m excited I found this channel!
Up in Ashton, they might not have planted yet. I know they have a shorter growing season in order to get small seed potatoes but also some guys grow that in beds which look a little bit different. As far as for us, we do not Hill before. we just work the ground so it’s soft and let the planters make the hills, I come through with the dammer diker after and make the hills better. Lockwood and double L are different companies. I like the double L beds but we’ve never used any of their other equipment and I like the Lockwood planters but I don’t like any of their other equipment, all of our harvest equipment is Spudnik. You should try our self propelled Oxbo AR4BX potato harvester! It is a truly magnificent machine.

Could the truck carrying the seed not have a boom like a combine to load the seeders?
It could, but it would be very expensive. We’re just trying to use what we have. We have been looking for a new way to load. There’s quite a few options.
You should buy a slinger for those trucks, makes loading the planter faster and way easier. Not to mention that loader operator banging the shit out of the unit with his bucket

I have to say if we go out or we fix dinner at home the first thing I have to taste is my potatoes. Baked,fried, mashed, it doesn’t matter what which way it’s always the first thing I try.

That loader belt machine is pretty slick. You said seed potatoes is there a difference between a seed potato and a regular potato? I’m guessing so.
Seed potatoes are smaller and they are also a fourth generation potato instead of a fifth generation potato. we plant those and what we pull out of the ground will be the fifth generation. Glad you enjoyed the video.

What is the soil makeup, it looks like it’s all been rototilled very loose soil. Do you plant on a rotation or is it continuous from Iowa just corn and beans mostly here
All we did was chisel plow with a lemken karat 10. We have pretty good soil thanks to decades of hauling cow manure. It is in a rotation with wheat and some hay.
How much water does a acre of potatoes take for the growing season?
This is Chris, potatoes use close to 2-3” of water each week until harvested. So in a total season maybe 32-48” of water
What is the return on a 1 ton of seed???
Most folks I know in Maine just load with a loader instead of a conveyor, it goes a lot faster with a loader
Yeah, it’s just different for everybody set up I’m sure. We would like to actually get a potato cart and load them that way.

What do you say cut potatoes when their whole potatoes small ones from last fall that you kept for seed????
We didn’t keep any from last year. We can’t replant what we raised last year because it would be the next generation of potato and the more generations the more likely you get disease. We plant 4th generation and what we pull out of the ground are the 5th generation. Most potato warehouses won’t accept a 6th generation potato which is what we would get if we replanted what we grew last year.
But if they're too big they have to be cut to be, back when they were all cut had a crew on the knife table run the through the fertilizer trailer and into the truck. And out to the field!

does the wheelloader have a prio list to fill fx the new planter is most effective so that have to run all the time or will he just fill planters as they come in?
The loader is pretty much running and loading nonstop.

I'm curious as to why you cut the seed potatoes? Is that just to use fewer potatoes when planting or are there other benefits?
Well, we have to cut the seed because sometimes the seed we get is 5 to 6 inches long or longer and we have to cut it down so that it’s small enough to fit on the cups of the planter. You can’t plant really big seed potatoes so we’re trying to get them all a uniform size that will fit in the planter. As long as each seed piece has at least one eye on it it will grow potatoes. It also makes it so your seed goes further. You can get one big potato and possibly cut it into eight seeds.
How about a mobile conveyer(consist of gas engine with hydraulic tank and motors)you could have it to back up the trucks to, dump the potatoes onto it and then you could just backup the tractor with the planter under and it can dump directly into the planter. This would save you alot of time.
Yeah, we have been looking into systems similar to that.
No cutting the seed potatoes. I was alway under the impression the potatoes got sliced in half with the cut side down. Does not seem to be the case. Is this specific to diff varieties.
What side down does not matter. We do cut our see though

Water comes from the river in canals and we pump it into sprinklers.

Your small Spudnik looked a lot like the one we used only newer, then I saw the one in the weeds outside the cellar and it looks closer to the one we used but is still newer. How old is that one? The one we had looked almost exactly like the one in the museum in Blackfoot
The one outside is the one we used to use until this year it still works. It’s a 60 something I think it’s a 61. It was one of the first ones. Spudnik made and yes they have that exact same one and some museums. Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
Buen día, le estaba comentando a un tío de cuando trabajaba en EU, ya que por cosas del destino regrese a México, estaba buscando unos videos de lo que me toco hacer allá, mire donde se prepara la semilla para la papa, cuando estaban cosechando y cuando la estaban almacenando, de digo a mi tío, mira todo eso, todos esos procesos que lleva la papa y toda la maquinaria que se utiliza, yo aprendí a hacer todo eso, también me toco estar en el recibidor cuando llegaban los camiones a la planta, hacerme cargo del recibidor por si fallaba algo y ayudar a dar mantenimiento si se descomponía algo, de recién que entre a la planta me tocaba estivar los costales, después con el tiempo ya que dure 12 años ahí, gracias a Dios estuve en todos lo procesos de la Papa, me dice mi tío, Tu hacías todo eso!, -Eso y otras tantas cosas mas, nada mas que aquí en México de nada me sirve todo eso que aprendí., Estaría bien que pudieras subir algún video donde llega la papa a a planta y se empaca, para poder recordar lo que hacia, Saludos y buen día.

Como había comentado antes, tuve la oportunidad de poder estar en casi todos los procesos de la papa, aquí en CZcams subí unos videos cortos de lo que hacia, en mi Facebook tengo mas fotos, pero lo chistoso de eso, es que aquí no puedo desempeñar lo que aprendí en EU, me encuentras como Cesar Medel Estrada, sobre de que te dejen tomar video en la planta, yo digo que si, ya que estas haciendo un tipo documental, desde la semilla, plantarla, cosecharla, almacenarla y te faltaría el ultimo proceso, lavarla, seleccionarla, empacarla, pero uno nunca sabe, espero que si te den la oportunidad, buen día y gracias.
