Richthofen died because he violated several of his own rules of combat he taught his pilots: he lost track of his position relative to the front lines, he flew too low where ground fire was a risk, he stayed concentrated on one enemy target too long, he became fixated on that target and ignored the danger from other enemy planes.

It is said that that's because of severe head injuries sustained before then. True or not, we may never know; but it is at least plausible.

@@DGARedRaven It is certainly true that his personality changed after he was wounded. There is some evidence the German High Command wanted him to stop flying, afraid of the effect on moral if he was killed, but he felt ti was his duty to stay in the air.

It should be noted that the Imperial German confirmation system was almost as stringent as the US sniper kill confirmation in Vietnam. 80 was the _confirmed_ tally of this ace of aces...
In addition, the Germans in this conflict were surprisingly honorable. Quintin Roosevelt (son of Theodore (don't call him Teddy, that's his first wife's (Alice) pet name for him) Roosevelt) flew in the war and was shot down and was given a _prince's_ burial.

I think Richthofen was suffering from depression, possibly PTSD. He had been shot down and wounded several times at this point. If you read some of the letters he wrote at that time, he felt death was inevitable if he continued to fly but he also refused the demands of German High Command that he step down because he felt that would be a betrayal of his pilots. I do think it is a stretch to translate that into a desire to kill himself. And a reaction to the Sabaton history channel might be appropriate.

... that ignores history. Before the late 1920s and early 1930s, Japan was ruled by the faction known colloquially as 'The Old Men' (basically, to give you an idea, these guys were the guys that fought to unify Japan under the banner of the Emperor and wanted Japan to become the Venice of the East) and were surprisingly _against_ atrocities in general. The problem was a faction colloquially known as the 'Imperialists' (basically the guys who wanted to emulate the British and French Empires, atrocities and all) won the power struggles during the late 1920s/early 1930s by literally murdering anyone who stood in their way.
